Change from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP by Upgrading to a Faster Speed Plan (Select Locations) @ nbn Co via Participating ISPs

809

Previous long running post from 2022

A million more households and businesses will get the opportunity to choose faster and more reliable broadband as the rollout of full fibre to the premises continues across the country.1,2

nbn and the Australian Government have released the latest suburbs and towns where additional premises will become eligible to get fibre connected to their house or business by ordering an eligible wholesale speed tier1 - with up to 58 per cent located in regional areas and the rest in metro areas.

These upgrades are part of the nbn fibre upgrade program - which was boosted by the Australian Government’s recent announcement of an additional $2.4 billion investment.

Full fibre connection to the nbn® network offers customers access to the higher speed tiers, which delivers a better, more reliable internet experience for homes and businesses.

The enhancements to the nbn network to deliver faster speeds and more data reflect and support business and societal changes over the last two years.

According to Venture research commissioned by nbn, online health consultations have increased by 147 per cent, online secondary educational engagement has grown by 114 per cent and a third of people who can work from home now expect to continue working from home at least one day a week.

The company is also supporting growing demands from Australian businesses for faster speeds and more data. Research indicates that 40 per cent of businesses are using video conferencing, cloud storage or cloud-based software.

Other benefits of higher speeds include:

Faster uploads and downloads for homes and businesses;
Faster game upgrades;
Faster streaming – making it easier to work from home, and a more enjoyable movie experience.
The benefits are even greater for larger households with many high bandwidth devices being used at the same time. More speed is better for when the whole family is streaming online at the same time – working from home, gaming, and watching movies.

nbn is on track to enable up to 10 million premises, or up to 90 per cent of homes and businesses across Australia to access nbn Home Ultrafast, offering wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps, by the end of 2025.

To trigger an upgrade, customers at eligible premises2 need to place an order with a retailer which is based on one of nbn’s three highest residential wholesale speed tiers.

To find out if you’re eligible for an upgrade register at nbn.com.au/FTTPupgrade.

      • Definitely good advice. I believe the external NBN box they only have to connect to the front of your house. The internal network connection device (NTD) can go up to 40m away, so you could insist it be somewhere more central in your house. However the lazy techs will do their absolute best to weasel their way so they can do the bare minimum. It all depends how much you're willing to fight. I wish I'd known this. If they won't put the NTD where you want and it's within 40m, I've even heard of people refusing the installation and waiting for NBN to assign a different technician. But that does waste your time and delays your installation by weeks.

  • Disappointing they won't upgrade HFC to FTTP. HFC is fast, but far from perfect, always undergoing maintenance in my area.

    • My parents house is on HFC, and they have had NBNco come out twice to replace the black NBN HFC box. NBNco said they were likely damaged by lightning.

If it was possible to upgrade HFC to FTTP at low cost, I'd get it done at my parents house for the increased reliability. Lightning doesn't affect fibre at all.

      • +2

Same here. Had the NTD replaced twice and all the connections and cables changed. It’s great when it works but way too many instances of maintenance - several times most weeks, and this is with Aussie Broadband (but they probably have no control over it - it’s all NBNco).

If only they went with Labor’s plan with FTTP for all. Do it properly and do it once. Instead of this mess we have with different forms of NBN and all the problems associated with them and incorporating them into aging, obsolete infrastructure.

  • Can anyone explain why they opt to offer upgrades to regional/less central suburbs first instead of inner city suburbs?

    • Same reason they wanted to do it before. Start in towns. Then rollout quicker in the cities at the end.

But at this point. Just do the damn cities quickly to get revenue and then do the regional parts later.

  • -5

This is total BS. They want me to pay 9k to upgrade my FTTN to FTTP.

  • +2

My suburb was in the very first list released last year and it's still not available here…. 😭

  • +2

Just remember that we only have Turnbull, Abbott and Rupert to thank for this ongoing fiasco.

The regressive morons that voted them in have plenty to answer for as well.

  • -1

Suburb not listed but still getting 110/40 on FTTN #feelsgoodman

  • so ive done his, had fttc @ 100 mgs, got up to a new 250 mgs plan and fttp - no difference!
i have 3 tv, kids ipads, gaming pc hooked up…so yea, true story

    • I found out the Ethernet port on my router was limited to 100Mbps, yours might also be like that. Could also be the ethernet cable as well.

      • Ah nah, i get 250 down and downloads are faster but no real difference when streaming, meant to say I had no real issues with net before so it's a bit of an overkill

  • +1

I stuck in my address and got this message, despite my suburb being on the list above:

Sorry, this upgrade isn’t available right now. We're working to make an additional 5 million premises eligible to upgrade to FTTP with a plan based on an eligible higher wholesale speed tier by the end of 2025.

    • +1

Basically means the physical work at your node hasn't been done yet I think.
You'll probably see a bunch of contractors doing work in the pits near houses once they start.

  • -1

too little too late NBN, 5G is already cheaper

    • +1

And good for it. NBN needs all the competition it can get to shine a light on just how shit the MTM copper is.

  • +1

My suburb was listed >12 months ago but I am still ineligible. Its also a new build with fresh infrastructure that is ready to connect.

Rang AussieBB who were able to check via NBN for approximate dates - and said it came up as no work planned. Turns out theyre only doing about half the suburb, not all of it - and I am sh*t outta luck.

  • +1

Says my suburb in their post but not a single address I checked in my suburb says it can be upgraded, interesting..

  • I'm still waiting, though recently had a letter dropped into the mailbox from a subby saying they'd be doing works in the street soon 🤞

  • +1

Did this last week. Relatively straightforward.
Enjoying 28 MB/s down from steam on my 250 plan.

  • My suburb is listed as available but both the nbnco website and Aussie Broadband (my ISP) both say FTTP is not available for my address (I do get 100/40 on my FTTN but it would be nice to get faster 😊)

  • +1

Our suburb has been on the list since April 22 and still not a single location can get the upgrade!

  • Pretty sure it’s $200+ either way. Pay $200 if you drop down. Pay $200 moving from 50Mbps to 250Mbps over the year you are locked in.

Either way. $200 is worth it.

NBN still sucks though. Liberal mess.

  • +1

The big question is where you want the NTD located within your house versus where the NBN technician is prepared to locate it. From what I understand the technicians prefer to install it as close as possible internally to the external PCD.

If you want the NTD located on the opposite side of the house to the PCD i.e. in a study you may have do some pre-work to run a telecom conduit with a draw string in the ceiling space for the NBN technician to pull thru the optical cable.

Probably depends on who you get on the day of the install but it may be prudent to do some pre-work to make their life easier.

    • Pls explain what is pcd? Let's say I want the ntd in the study area where my moderms are at. Can they put it in there with the existing phoneline?

      • nbn PCD is a box located outside the building and has a fibre cable in it. Type nbn PCD into Google to see it. They can put the NTD in your study.

        • +1

Depends on who you get and how much work is involved.

      • +1

PCD (premise connection device), it's the junction box where your the copper wire or optical fibre comes into your home.

Like I said, it depends on who you get on the day. Most techs will install the NTD as close as possible to the PCD, if your study is far from the entry point then you may need a certified installer to run a conduit and cord pull through to your preferred location.

        • nbn registered cabler is what you need to Google search for.

        • That makes sense, but if the house has two stories, will the installer install it next to the PCD or take it upstairs, or it just depends on who is doing the installation.

          • @Digitalco: Depends on the installer but I doubt they will do upstairs.

  • +1

    Why is it bargain?

    • +1

      It isn’t.

    • It's a forum post at best.

  • My address was "Announced in November 2021" as eligible but still not available. From what I've heard on the grapevine it's expected to be another 12 to 18 months at least…. Don't get your hopes up

  • My suburb is on their todo list & they have already surveyed the pits outside our houses. Once the suburb is upgraded, do you have to switch over? Can you stay on FTTN & the plan already on? Speed I get is fine for our use & dont want to pay more than I currently do.

    • Nah you don't have to switch to FTTP. You can stay on FTTN. This can change in the future and if it does you will get notified.

100/20 is only about $74 for 1 month and that is enough to get you FTTP. After that you can swap back to 25Mbps or 50Mbps.

  • Says "Sorry, this upgrade isn’t available right now" even though my address is listed in one of the suburbs included in the upgrade register…

  • Sad HFC User :(

  • So my suburb was announced in March last year but every time I checked it said not available. Now they have taken it off the list completely.

My parents suburb is still on the list but it's unavailable at their address also. Has anyone actually been able to upgrade?

    • No suburb has been removed. This list is mainly new locations.

Plenty have upgraded and around 1.3 million locations are eligible right now.

  • +2

Lucky enough to get upgraded last week…. sooooooooooo good.

  • Does anyone here know the level of difficulty in getting a townhouse connected to the NBN when all other townhouses on the block are FTTP?
I checked all other (6) townhouses on the nbn co website and they state the below:

You are connected to the nbn® network
    Technology used in your connection
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) has been used in your connection to the broadband access network.

But for the townhouse I’m looking at it says:

Check with your phone and internet provider about ordering an nbn® powered plan

Good news! It looks like your location is eligible for our wholesale high speed tiersΔ.
These speed tiers are designed to suit households that stream in ultra-high definition, with five or more concurrently connected users or devices^.

So would this mean I would need to pay for NBN to get the install from the PIT or whatever it might be to my townhouse? And if by luck would anyone have a rough idea on the $$ for something like this?

  • Has anyone else spoken to Telstra about $penalties for downgrading the plan right after the FTTC to FTTP upgrade? Are they passing on the $200 or absorbing it themselves?

I just had a one-hour live chat where I was repeatedly told I needed to upgrade to a lower speed plan (till I pointed out their own website that states they require a different minimum plan for FTTC to FTTP compared to FTTN to FTTP) and then got told about 4 different costs in $plan increases!

Ended up with a "Supervisor" who told me I could immediately downgrade my plan (after the FTTC to FTTP upgrade) back to what I'm on now and there was no penalty.

I know I can rely on the Live Chat log and a TIO complaint to reverse any extra charges, but it's a lot of work when I simply want the FTTP upgrade to get rid of the shoddy wiring my place has (think: NBN escalations at least twice a year after some rain :( ).

    • +1

Why do you have to deal with Telstra? Why not upgrade to FTTP with one of the other ISPs , and downgrade your plan after a month if desired at no cost?

    • Apparently AussieBB is not passing on the $200. It must be worth it to them as the quality of service and stability means they’ll make back the $200 in increased stability.

  • +1

My suburb was announced over a year ago and still not available. I know others in the comments have been waiting longer. I dont see this as a deal and the communication from NBN is terrible, they just announce more eligible areas while the existing 'eligible' areas.. aren't.

  • +1

It blows my mind that this is still a thing. Have had FTTP for 11+ years.

    • +3

NS the street next to us has FTTP installed in 2013 and I just sit and wonder “if they just kept going we would have had FTTP in 2014”

It would have been done across Australia by now. But they knew that didn’t they. The liberals destroyed the NBN to win politics at the expense of the nation.

      • The vast majority of people have nfi what 'fibre' is and Turnbull was of course very aware of that.

  • My suburb is in the list but my address is not available.
I'm doing okay on FTTC but would like FTTP and the higher speed tiers.

  • Lol @ upgrading your speed plan. My ISP keep bombing me with these offers to connect to FTTP, it's just going to cost me another $20/month… Yeah, nah, for what I do, I think I'll keep my FTTN connection a bit longer.

Not a deal if I need to go on a much more expensive plan to connect.

    • Pay the extra $20 for 1 month to get FTTP and swap back to your previous plan.

      • Is it only 1 month? I heard it was 12 with Launtel.

        • Launtel are doing $200 upfront to cover the nbn downgrade fee and will refund the $200 if you stay on the same speed for 12 months.

Exetel, Superloop and Aussie BB are some ISPs that are not charging the $200 and are allowing speed changes.

          • +1

@Twix: Must be a big ISP thing, where they don't pass on the cost as it's in their best interest to have you on something stable.

  • I must live in the only street in Yarraville that's stuck on FTTN.
Quoted 10k to put a fiber line in at cost.

  • Does anyone actually know what work is required to upgrade FTTC to FTTP? Im not talkikg about the obvious fibre connection to the house instead of the kerb node, im more wondering why it takes so long for NBN to realease FTTC areas to the FTTP upgrade program. Surely the fibre is just outside the house in most cases. Why the wait?!?

  • +1

The politicians that destroyed the NBN should have their superannuation docked and assets seized. The whole mess is nothing short of fraud. Labour can fix NBN shonky pricing, doubt they will both parties are hell bent to outdo each other of shafting the Aussie public.

  • What if I already pay for 100mbps FTTN plan do I have to order the 250mbps plan as it states you must get a higher speed plan?

    • Yes. To get the free upgrade, you must sign up to a higher plan (at least 250Mbps). Some ISP's allow you to downgrade the plan after 1 month with no penalty (e.g. Aussie BB, More Internet).

      • The minimums are 250Mbps for FTTC to FTTP and 100Mbps for FTTN to FTTP.

    • Nah for FTTN to FTTP you can stay on 100Mbps.
