                • @Twix: @Twix
                  I don't need VOIP and 4G backup.
So I can connect the DECO X68 directly with This?

What is the advantage of doing this way? thanks

                  • @FlyingPanda99: Yep you can plug in your TP-Link Deco X68 into the nbn NCD box. The advantage is you get to use the router built-in to the TP-Link Deco with access to all it's features and no double NAT problems. Are you with Telstra or did you swap ISPs?

                    • @Twix: Correct, I am with AU POST at this moment.
I am swapping with whoever offers the best prices.

@FlyingPanda99: TP-Link Deco is compatible with all ISPs. Sometimes you have to reconfigure the TP-Link Internet Connection Type settings depending on if the ISP uses PPPoE (username and password) or IPoE (Dynamic IP) and sometimes you don't.

                        1. Unplug the Telstra modem.
                        2. Wait at least 30 minutes.
                        3. Plug in the TP-Link Deco to the nbn NCD.
                        4. In the Deco app go to More, Advanced, Check that the Operation Mode is set to Wi-Fi Router and apply.
                        5. In the Deco app go to More, Internet Connection and change the Internet Connection Type to Dynamic IP for AusPost and tap Done.

@Twix: Thanks and I'll try tonight. Really appreciate your help.

@FlyingPanda99: If you aren't using Telstra's VoIP and auto 4G failover you can plug in the TP-Link Deco X68 to the nbn NCD.

If you are using Telstra's VoIP and auto 4G failover configure the TP-Link Deco X68 as a Wi-Fi access point.

If you want an Asus mesh setup it replaces your TP-Link Deco X68.

        • benefit of keeping your ISP modem is if you have a fault they know how to login to the modem and look at stats and fix problems, it's the hand of point for responsibility, keep using the telstra as a modem, but use the asus to get wifi around the house and mesh if you need extra range. That way if you have fault with NBN, less hassles on the phone to explain what you are doing …. they follow a run sheet "are you using the telstra modem , yes" ok next question.

          • +1

            @garage sale:

they know how to login to the modem

Also the exact reason you shouldn't use an ISP provided router.

Agreed that it is useful having a second device with a supported configuration for troubleshooting. Previously, when I had issues, I had minor difficulties dealing with support when I mentioned bridge mode.

            • @ihfree:

Does 4g back up work for you in bridge mode?

              • @nk7: If the 4G backup is on your modem, then no, it won't work.
If you're talking about 4G failover on Asus routers, that should work fine.

  • Got Google Nest pack of two from Tangerine, how is this compared to the Google?

  • This mesh mode or Deco x60-2packs for 400m two storey house?

  • Perfect timing. Was just thinking I needed to offload the routing from TP Link. Previous one overheated and killed the LAN ports, current one seems to dropping the connection because of heat. Seems to stay connected now that I've raised it off the cabinet, but I just don't trust it not to fry itself like the previous.

    • Yeah same, my TP Link is getting flakier by the minute day, but the thing I'm unsure about is if it's the routing part or the modem part.

      • +1

In my case it seems to be a heat issue. I also had the guest network turned on for some IoT devices, I turned that off when I was having a entire day continued of dropouts. Let it sit for a bit, then switched back on and reconnected. Haven't had a dropout since. I figure just using it as a modem should make it happy.

I was always planning to use it as just a modem, just didn't expect to have my hand forced heh

  • Bought in January when it dropped to $149. Then watched it drop to $139, so $125 is a steal.

    No regrets its working great.
We get sufficient coverage in the house (well placed central NBN point) so I dont need mesh.

  • How would people rate this against the TP-Link Archer VR400/AC1200 (not sure what it’s called exactly)? Would wifi 6 be that big an improvement? I’ve been having lag issues on mobile devices in an apartment with the TP-Link

    • the Asus every day

  • Hi
Currently running a netgear r7000 with deco m5 as a back haul for wifi at back of the house . FTTN

Would this be any improvement ? I’ve got ports in all rooms but wifi at the back of the house is not great as router is in the garage at the front

    • The R7000 is a great router but the Netgear firmware is absolute garbage. Fortunately you can run Merlin on this router and pair it with any AI mesh compatible Asus router.
      https://xvtx.ru/xwrt/

      • Thanks for your input. Not sure if it’s worth it to upgrade.

  • Would this be a significant improvement from NetComm NF18ACV?

    • This was my exact situation and yes it is. The wifi range seems better to the point I now get coverage of my whole house. Just have to keep the NetComm and put it in bridge mode then connect this router to it.

      • Bridging the NetComm VDSL2 modem to the Asus router is for nbn FTTN and FTTB.

If you have nbn FTTC, FTTP, HFC, FW you can plug in the Asus router to the nbn box.

    • Anything is better than the NetComm NF18ACV.

Is this the new price trend given the fall in demand after Covid

Even older high end routers were sold $100-$200 (sold at full PRSP) more than the pre- Covid prices during the Covid driven by demand

There were no laptop or SSD deals in 2021 /2022 but have plenty of deals in late 2022 and prices seems to be falling further in 2023

I have slowly started to upgrade my hardware purchased in 2019 -2020 given the attractive prices now

  • Any recommendations for a router that supports 2.5gbe? Planning to setup 2.5gbe Lan for the house.

    • +2

Depends if you even have a more than 1gig internet to utilize full potential. Else just get a switch for lan.

      I have Asus GT-AX6000 which has 2 x 2.5gb ports.

    • Asus RT-AX86U Pro model has 2.5G.

  • which 4g modem is good?

  • can I combine 4x lan port to connect my 10gbe NAS?

  • Thanks OP. Bought one.

  • Would this be better than my RT-AC88U please?
I currently have FTTP and my current Asus RT-AC88U does not give good wifi reception across the house (4 bedrooms, single storey).

    Thanks

    • +1

have you played with the channels & looked to see if there are neighbours causing interference & also different location for the device (if possible), a 4 bedroom house may require something like mesh depending on construction / size / layout / location of device

      • Hey,
        Thanks for replying.
Yes I have played with the channels.
Relocating the main router is not possible as it sits in the study unfortunately, due to the placement of the NBN NTD in that room which is closer to the front of the house.

The wifi issue happens mostly near the back of the house and I am thinking of getting this to do an Ai Mesh but was wondering if this one is better to run off the NTD instead of my current one.

        Thansk

the 88u is a quality device I'd leave it as the primary my only comment is people suggest not mixing AC & AX for mesh

          • @Irishness: Thank you so much.
I'll look for something AC then :)

            • +1

@hansmitchel: if it's only for mesh don't go crazy one of the asus lower numbered models will be fine for AC, AX is great if you have devices that are capable of using wifi 6 but so many aren't

  • managed to grab one of these, too good for the price

  • Anyone got a router with a 10GbE port?

    • Asus RT-AX89X has 10G ethernet and 10G SFP+ ports.

  • Where r they shipping from? Current eta 8 March. Normally if they have stock and in Australia would receive it overnight

    • Shipping from the Antarctica Warehouse

But in seriousness I have no idea where they are coming from. It could be that they are waiting for a shipment to arrive in Australia.

      • Now I know they shipped it via Austpost snail mail on road. Will take a week or so to WA. On some other stuff they send via overnight shipment…

    • What was the delivery date when you ordered?
I just ordered and have "FREE delivery Tuesday, February 28" - should I be expecting delays too? (VIC metro)

      • +1

Nothing to worry about, you are in a different state and likely it will be shipping directly by Amazon Flex not Aus Post. The Aus Post ETA is always quite long to be safe.

        • You're right, was delivered yesterday for me.

  • +1

    I received mine today.

Much much better than TP link VR1600v!

    • So much better - not even a comparison TBH.

      Especially for the price.

    Back in stock.

I saw my CCC notification then came to check here ..

  • Long shot but I'll try.

I dont have broadband internet at home and use my phone as a hotspot for everything. Although, I need something for streaming VR wirelessly from my PC and using a Steam Link from PC to my TV. I tried through my a few years old phone, it works but laggy. Would this router be the thing I need? Plug into PC with a cord and then point to point (or bridge or whatever it's called) connection to my TV and VR headset without using internet, would this work?

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought one. Couldn't find anything that as cheap as this one and I wanted to try WiFi 6. I'm currently using a German made LANCOM access point (WiFi5). Hope this doesn't disappoint me.

  • Any difference using this as wired backhaul mesh or deco m5(currently using)

  • So.. I still have a Telstra Smart modem Gen 1 attached to HFC.. worth an upgrade?

I have nothing special.. Tv, few laptops and phones. Pretty bad reception downstairs however.

    • Just ask Telstra for a new one

  • Any router with modem functionality for the similar price? Tia

  • I'm sure this benefits a lot of people, but honestly after wireless N I stopped noticing any difference. I have a 100mbps connection with a small family of 4. I've tried all these different Asus and google etc routers over the years and honestly the trusty net gear would have done me fine.

  • Noob question is this better than mesh like in terms of coverage?

  • +3

    Back in stock

  • Sorry for noob question, but is this modem router or will I need separate modem with this?

    • +1

You will need a separate modem. This is router only.
Pick up a free or low cost modem from facebook marketplace (Telstra smart modem Gen1/Gen2 or something for <$10, and put in bridge mode ).

      • Mate do you know if those Telstra gen 2 modems are locked to Telstra or can I use it on any isp?

        • +1

          They're not locked to Telstra.
I've personally used with Exetel and more telecom (PPPoE - just enter username/pw).
I know somebody who's using with Optus (IPoE - no cfg required)

          • @johnmelb: Awesome thanks for the confirmation!

I'm with Exetel too so this would be perfect.

    • +1

It is not a modem, router only. You will need a separate modem, depending on the type of internet you have.
