Given that TP link could be ban from US and perhaps Australia too, been thinking of getting this. Anyone can vouch on performance and general setup? I'm quite a newbie on routers so not sure what to look at. I have 100 mbps NBN and maybe like top 15-20 devices that would connect and any given time. Might upgrade to 200mpbs or higher in the future but not any higher.

Pretty straight forward setup. Download the app, plug into your NBN box and good to go. Bought it during last sale about 6 months ago and been solid with no dropouts whatsoever. Coverage is pretty good for a two storey townhouse. I have a setup very similar to what you have defined and Superloop is my NBN provider.

      • Nice, thanks, I got superloop as well so glad its working well. Might pull the trigger on the 2 pack. Don't think I need that much for a single storey

        • I've got the xt8, works quite well. I'm running a pair with a wired backhaul. I find it works best if you don't run QoS, mine seems to throttle the device connection speed down if you run QoS even when the wireless bandwidth isn't saturated.

Aside from that, good range and good connectivity. Probably more because my opticomm neighbourhood isn't saturated, but I'm getting 285mbps on a 250mbps connection.

Does this product still require a modem? Like does the setup have to be: nbn box > modem > this product. Or can I be nbn box > this product.

If it requires modem, what do you use? Do you just use a modem-router and disable the modem?

        Thx boss and happy nye

        • +2

NBN box to this product. I got a FTTP NBN connection.

          • @Shekhars: in a FTTC setup, can i put this like this, will it work? NBN FTTC Box > this device > Lan to my existing (NF18ACV) to behave as a switch and VOIP device?

Setup the two other things around the house for better wifi? would this work?

            • @Mintee: @Mintee: Don’t take my word as I ain’t an expert in networking but I believe for FTTC setup it should be your NBN FTTC box to Modem (NF18ACV) to Asus XD4S (this device).

In such a setup, you could use this device (the Asus XD4S) in router mode, which will create a Double NAT, that may (or may not be a problem) for you based on your usages or, you could use this device in Access Point (AP) mode, which will make it unable to access the device settings of these devices through the ASUS app, again, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on your knowhows on networking.

Your VOIP device will always have to be attached to the modem provided by your service provider, in your case, the NF18ACV.

If you're still on Fibre to the Node, you will need a VDSL2+ modem between your NBN box and this product.

      • I have an existing setup with RT-AC68U and RT-AC68U as AiMesh nodes. Can I reuse those as mesh nodes with this unit?

    • Why would they be banned?

    • +1

I guess you got a TP link router? Don't think the ban will brick your router.

    • Ripper units. I'm on 100/40 and everything says that's what I'm getting with these. I've got 2 in a medium sized unit.
I've also got about 10 IoT devices across the house as well, plus phones Google Chromecast PlayStations etc.

this one or is it worth paying $358 for the x68? thanks for your recommendations!

  • Can anyone help me out. My router is on the way out and its constantly dropping out. I have 0 clue on what I need. I currently have FTTC on ABB's 100/20 with no real plans to change in the future. Need wifi to reach the back of the house (we have a long and skinny house) atm, I have 1x wifi extender in the middle of the house to get it to the back (router is in the front) - What the heck do I need. Ps. I need a VOIP port/ device

    • This will work if you have a long house, mesh wifi signals are better than wi-fi extenders. As one of the comments above mentioned, you just plug this into your modem and download the app.

      • I just had a look, its only got 1 ethernet port… id need 3 minimum. :( So I dont think it would.

        • I dont have ethernet throughout the home, I know they say 'ethernet backbone' but can you set any mesh router pack without ethernet and just have the additional points act like a wifi extender and just take and wifi and push it out further
        • +2

Yeah from the looks of it, you can plug the modem to the LAN/WAN port and have one spare port. Some reviews suggesting you need a switch if you need LAN which is not that expensive.

Yes, I have a TP link and the other nodes act as extenders, you can also do the same with this one

    • Why are you on FTTC?

Get the free upgrade to FTTP (yes 100/20 is enough), they brought the requirement down.

      • my fttc isnt broken? Im not going to pay more to upgrade to get the free upgrade?

        • +2

You don't need to pay more, you said that you are already on 100/20 with ABB.

          Its free.

It might not be free in the future, and they might force you to upgrade, enjoy paying $$$ then.

          • @GTR12: Would I need to upgrade my existing router to support a FTTN connection?

            • @Mintee: It goes FTTN - FTTC - FTTP (there's others but I'll keep it simple).

You don't go backwards, you UPGRADE to FTTP.

No you don't need to change anything, ABB should be telling you to upgrade for free, not me.

              • @GTR12: Maybe I just upgrade and buy a Netcomm NF20MESH + 1 wifi extender? and that should solve all my problems?

                • @Mintee: That's a worse product.

                  • @GTR12: My gosh, this is so confusing :( So nothing meets my requirements at the moment?

                    • @Mintee: This deal is perfect for you, if you have a bit more to spend, then the Google Wi-Fi 6e mesh for $350.

                      • @GTR12: Im confused how its perfect for me when it doesnt have more then 1 ethernet port, no voip soooo id be stuck with an un-usable phone, and a PC that cant connect?

                        • @Mintee: do you have a separate voip device? This above product should have ethernet ports on all the units EDIT: According to you tube unboxing video all the unit has the same ports.
I'm no expert but if yes then you can just connect your voip device to either 2nd or the 3rd unit of this depending on where your voip device is located.

I've RT-acx86u as a main router and rt-ac68u as a node for my 5 bed 2 storey home where I can plug anything via Ethernet eg wireless camera's hubs, Laptops etc and works really well. hope this helps.

I'm thinking of upgrading to this or this

    • It's currently free upgrade to FTTP now with most of ISP; ie Tangerine.
Just sign up to get free FTTP and stay with them for 6 months and then port back to ABB after that if you want.
With FTTP you won't have the network drop out like FTTC anymore.

      • My network doesnt usually drop out, this is a recent thing

  • Are they designed to be mounted to the ceiling? I’m guessing not…

Edit: Description says it has mounting holes for the wall…

Great little devices if you need good coverage across a large home. Just don't expect to be maxing out your line speed.

  • I have a RT-AX88u - can I mesh these with this router?

    • I believe so. My understanding is that if it has the 'ai mesh' tag it can.
Full disclosure - I have the 2 pack of this unit, but not additional Asus products.

Yes i have the same setup works perfect

This is exactly what I did except with an RT-AX86U and it was great.

  • Out of curiosity, if I set my existing Deco M5 in AP mode, would I be able to hold on to them and create a mesh made up of this ASUS set up plus my Decos?

I’m having trouble with my Deco M5 delivering <100mbps at each device despite being on a 1000mbps connection. The Deco app reports in its SpeedTest >750mbps. People on the forums suggest setting it up in Access Point mode to get around this issue but when I put it into Access Point mode (with the main router connected to the HFC NTD), the internet does not work at all.

  • Is it worth of upgrading to this from a 1st gen Google Nest Wifi?

    • I would say yes for the wifi6 alone. But depends what NBN you got as well.

  • Can I simply use these as my APs with an existing MT-6000 flint 2 router (FTTP NBN)?

  • Is this is better or is the Google nest pro wifi 6e (3p) for $350?

    • The 6e obviously, this is older tech.

    • The 3 pack is more like $500.

  • +1

I’m looking to replace gen 1 Google wifi mesh. A bit of research (YouTube etc) suggests that for most households (pretty much any home that doesn’t have solid brick/stone internal walls) may be better or no worse off with single router designed for range. I’m considering the ASUS RT-AX86U Pro (AX5700), currently $299 on Amazon. I’d welcome any counter viewpoints that this mesh system is a better option. We’re in a two storey family home with stud walls, router placement is fairly central. I’m keen to move away from google and TP Link is on the black list.

    • Why not get the AX86 router first, and if the range isn't sufficient, get this mesh system as well.

      • How confident are you this sale will return?

        • If youre worried, just buy this mesh setup as well, but don't unbox it. Test the AX86 first, and it works sufficiently, return the unopened mesh system.

  • I'm experiencing intermittent connectivity problems with my Deco XE75 Pro mesh system. Despite having three devices connected via Ethernet, the wired connection between two of them frequently reverts to wireless.

I've thoroughly troubleshooted the issue by:

    • Replugging Ethernet cables.
    • Swapping the affected devices between ports.
    • Rearranging the device positions.

However, the problem persists. TP-Link support has been unable to resolve the issue. I'm considering purchasing a new (cheap) mesh Wi-Fi system to determine if the issue lies with the Deco XE75 Pro itself.

I'm reading about the above Asus vs the Aero 6 to decide what to try next.

  • I have 1000/50 how close can I get to 1 gig speed over wifi using this ?

Currently only ac1800 and barely hit 450mb on wifi, lan is fine tho as it should be

    • You have to make sure your clients, i.e. your phone support that. My phone can only hit ~450mbps on my wifi, whereas the macbook pro i can hit 800mbps.

  • Real question. Can you use existing RT-AC86U series to join this mesh setup or I have throw everything away!?
