Purchased to replace my Aldi sharpener which has been awesome for the last 5 years.

        • +6

Sharpeners are inherently consumable. If you don't have to replace it - it's not doing anything.

    • In home , any time, or you have to go to a store and they send them off?

      • +2

Print out a form from the Wusthof website, package your knife, pay shipping costs, send it off and they'll sharpen it and send it back in two weeks.

        • +3

Thanks I never knew, I have got a few (well 5) of their knives from years back. Couldn’t be bothered packing and paying postage to be honest though.

        • +3

Sounds like they offer that service because they know most people couldn't be bothered with that.

        • +65

they'll sharpen it and send it back in two weeks.

          That sounds like a….Wusthof time?

        • Simple! Just don't cut anything for two weeks

    • I own Wusthofs, please tell me more :)

    • +8

With a two week turnaround, postage charge and all the faffing around with packaging them correctly, I just take mine to the local knife sharpening dude at the weekend market for $15.

    • how to get free knife sharping with wusthofs? I have a wusthofs cleaver thats getting a bit dull..

    • Where abouts?

    • Only for knives purchased in Australia. Damn. Got mine shipped from the US.

  • +1

I bought this a month back when it was $10, blue is cheap compared with the other models.
    It works really well.

    • because blue doesn't look as premium as silver

  • +2

the "World's Best" is not printed on the device

That's misleading advertising, you should complain to Amazon.

    • +3

puffery isn't considered to be misleading advertising D:

"‘Puffery’ refers to wildly exaggerated and vague claims about a product or service that no one could treat seriously. For example, a restaurant claims they have the ‘best steaks on earth’. These types of statements are generally not considered misleading." -https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/advertising-and-promotions/false-or-misleading-claims

      • +1

Yeah or the best pies in Queensland. I came across 3 of them. They must be tied at first place on the Pie Chart.

        • They didn't say they're the best pies in the universe, and it seems they could have, which makes me think they musn't be very good.

      • +1

What are the laws on a missing sticker though?

        • +1

          off with their heads!

  • +16

These are great for cheap knives that don't cost much to replace, but NEVER use them on good ones given how much material they remove

    • +1

Doesn’t seem to remove much on mine, and sharpens the knives well.
Some reviews say it removes a lot, I am betting they press down while sharpening instead of just using the weight of the knife like the instructions explain.

      • yeah same, works good for a noob like me but i don't have really expensive knives or anything.

        • +1

My knives are good ones, had them since the 90s probably.

My wife will kill them eventually as she puts them in the dishwasher…

    • These are made to be easy for people that dont want to learn to use the whetstone.

I always recommend most people to get a honing rod. That'll keep your knife (if good enough) sharp for an entire year, then dust off the sharpener.

      • +1

honing does not sharpen you knife, it aligns it that's all and also depends how often you use your knife too. if use everyday your knife will have to be sharpened often.
I use often and i like a super sharp knife to cut with ease. I use global knives and they are best kept sharp at 10-15 degrees.

    • +1

Totally agree, I had some cheapo knives which it sharpened well, albeit shedding some metal. Got a whet stone and steel to keep my Global knives sharp

      • Could you recommend a whet stone? I have global knives as well and don't know where to start as some suggest that Global knives have diff angles or something?

        • +1

          just get the IKEA sharpener.

        • +1

I use the "NANIWA Chosera Ceramic Whetstone 800" on my globals.

        • whetstones are great, after you've spent a few months or years learning how to use them. good idea if you want a hobby, poor idea if you just want sharp knives in a manner which preserves your knives but also spend as little time as possible.

          check out knife sharpening systems.

        • +1

King whetstones are fine for global's. Naniwa chosera if you want to spend more

    • Yea exactly it works great for my cheap Victorinox knives but I wouldn't risk it on anything you're not willing to replace every few years or so.

ah here we are again. always worth checking the comments. example -

I love knives in fact I make them for a living. I’ll try to keep this short and to the point (no punt intended).

Even I fell for the marketing and purchased one of these and I love any tool that makes life that little easier (work smarter not harder) but interns of this gimmick it’s one of those things where it’s akin to using a sledge to hammer for a 1” nail - your going to do damage and you just needed a small joinery hammer. Anyhow when I sharpen knives I do so with the upmost care because every time you sharpen a knife your wearing away it’s life removing metal until finally it ready to be retired in the bin (trash for our American cousins) now this thing carves curled up pieces of steel and little fragments removing way to much metal even with the weight of the knife it’s self doing the sharpening, it’s just over kill. I used a small digital microscope to see what the carbide inserts are doing to the steel and compared it to a freshly sharpened customers knife and it’s bad really bad with deep gouges and rolled and chipped edges it’s just destroying the edges, I also noticed the bevels were uneven because the carbide cutting inserts may be at 20° but your hand will move side to side causing the bevel angles to vary all the way down the edge because it’s not really the sharpening carbide inserts that determine the sharpening angle as they are at a constant, it’s how straight you can keep your hands as you draw the knife through the sharpener and no matter how hard you try, you will always favour one side or the other further damaging your expensive knives. Please people this might seem to work but on closer inspection it’s just destroying the edges (bevels) on knives and also removing way to much steel even with light passes. There are many great sharpeners out there that do a much better job at sharpening that will keep your knives in tiptop condition that gives a better longer lasting edge for a little more money and it will last longer that this edge destroying gimmick. I will tell you a few good ones below.

Work sharp precision adjust knife sharpener.

    Work sharp guided field sharpener.

    Lansky knife sharpening system.

Probably best one: Knife Sharpener Kit, “CWOVRS Professional Knife Sharpening System” and will give you a professional edge every time and will last a life time.

Please remember these are going to last a life time or a very long time so you will get you money’s worth and then some out of them and you’ll get a super sharp edge that lasts way longer than this destroyer of knives and you’ll remove far less material, they are more expensive sets that are way out side of the average home gamer price range like the wicked edge which is expensive but please consider it if you have expensive knives because this is the best knife sharpener in the world and they have different sets you can buy that you can build on over the months and years and the quality of workmanship is the best you can get…..

    • +17

With respect to removing too much material, if you are a chef who sharpens you knives all the time, fair enough. If you just sharpen you knives at home once every 6 to 12 months does it really matter? I have a similar sharpener, probably sharpen my knives every 6 months for the past few years and they aren't toothpicks yet.

      • valid point, especially cheap crap. I have a certain respect with building and maintaining stuff that last generations, roman buildings for example.

        • Yeah that's totally fair, and probably a good way to look at the world (buy for life, reduce waste etc.)

        • I agree with both of you. However, having invested in lots of different tools to sharpen knives. I rely solely on this one now. It's quick, effective and super easy to use. The life of the knives will definitely be impacted, but I'll still get at least a decade + out of them. For home/casual use this item is amazing, for the pros hone your whetstone/stropping skills.

    • +2

Wow! Thanks for write-up! Checked out CWOVRS, it is $120, I'll pass. My kitchen knife is TUKUL Chef's Knife 8 inches. X50CrMoV15 and it costs $20 to replace :)

      • You can get pretty much the identical thing on ebay for less than half that, but yeah… for a $20 knife?

        • +7

I sharpen my $40 IKEA knife with over a hundred dollar worth of whetstones. I feel so special.

      • As they say, if you have a cheap knife, get one of these and just know you'll be replacing your knife more regularly. You'll still be ahead.

For those of us with good knives, these should be avoided.

      • I've just ordered one. I'd bet dollars to donuts that for that price it is not real X50CrMoV15. Gonna try find out.

    • Any opinions on the Furi Diamond Fingers?

      • They are good for honing the blade, but not for sharpening making an edge … I use a furi steel or their knife sharpener, then use the fingers nearly everytime I need to cut.

      • I'd send you my one which is sitting in the cupboard since I bought this item. IMHO there is no comparison, this one wins by a landslide.

    • +2

      (no punt intended)

I highly recommend that you do not kick your knives also.

      sauce source

      • For a low blow, that was incredibly satisfying. Thank you.

      • a true knife enthusiast will try to identify the knife in that photo

    • +2

The thing I noticed when I did my knives with my Ruixin (very similar or identical to CWOVRS) is that they weren't just sharp, but the edges were polished. So you could turn the knives to catch the light and you'd get a gleam from the edges. Very, very smooth to use (Global knives). With honing, they lasted a long time. Having said that, I bought a newer model to replace it and the thought of setting it all up is making me procrastinate. So I can see the attraction of a pull-through sharpener!

      • Assuming you had an RX-008? What did you replace it with?

    • +1

I like reasons to not buy things here, just saved me a tener.

    • Thanks Frosty, have you seen if the CWOVRS go on special?

    • And for the price of that sharpener I can get 8-10 edges re-shaped and sharpened, which at my current home usage rate is about 4 years with zero risk except for the trust I place in my knife smith. Dunno what I'll do when the old bloke turns in his wheel - maybe get one of these.

For the time being I'm happier leaving it with a pro… but I can see the meditative & building skills for the apocalypse value of doing it yourself.

    • After a brief look I see that there are plenty of sharpeners purporting to be Ruixin Pro's on Aliexpress. Could be I suppose. They're all made in China.

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003990327371.html?spm=a2…

    • I see your point but see the description:

"General purpose home / kitchen use. Classic style, with user replaceable tools, extending life. Perfect for the avid home cook."

We don't have any expensive knifes in the household and just bring dead knifes alive again.

The majority here on Ozbargain is probably not as dedicated like you or a 5 star cook…

  • also globals not compatible i believe

  • +1

If anyone put any of my knives in one of these awful sharpeners I would stab them with said knife. They might put a temporary edge on your knife, but they destroy them, and peel strips of metal away to do so.

Just buy a whetstone and a honing rod and learn to use them, it's bloody easy to learn, and you'll keep a decent knife for decades

  • +3

Just ordered. Will only use for the Kiwi knives I bought from the Asian grocery. I have the Lansky system but too lazy to use often. I mainly use a diamond stone I bought from Bunnings for $70 which is much quicker than the Lansky. Works well with my Mercer which is the most expensive knife I have. Don't care much about the others as they are cheap as. Thinking of getting some used Globals.

  • +1

Don't use this with global or jap knives

  • +1

Shanks, mate; got two - one for now and one for later. That'll cut it!

  • +1

Highly recommend to spend a bit more to get those sharpeners with three color ceremic wheels.

  • Let's grab a ceramic plate in case you are tight in budget.

  • +1

Bought this last time - Actually quite good for its price. I'd recommend it.

  • +1

Bought one last December with the same deal. Happy with it with sharpening the thin blade "Asian" knives. The suction up at the bottom make it more stable.

  • +2

It helps my knife after being ruined by Mister Minit. Totally worth it if you are not into the wheatstone sharpening game

    • Most annoying and pathetic Mister Minit at Chadstone shopping centre. Right next door to Kmart. Dude talks to you as if he's your son in law and tells you that it's going to cost $100 for a garage remote. Ozbargainer here buys one on eBay and programs for $11. Stuff you Mr Minit Chadstone (the owner….other staff seem to be fine)

  • +1

Bought this from the last deal and would not recommend, it rips chunks out of your knife.

    • +1

you prob used too much downforce
