What Wallet Do You Guys Use?

My traditional bifold from 10 years ago has finally died and I am looking for a new wallet suggestion, what better place to come then OzBargain! What wallet do you guys use and what would you recommend (I typically carry 6-8 cards and a little bit of cash).

What about for ID purposes etc? If it's just for driving, then I can leave it in the car (and like you said we can present it later)… but for ID purposes there's nothing else.

          • +1

            @bobbified: A Beard

            • +10

@Godric: A beard? I'm asian. If you imagine the hair on Homer Simpson's head, that's what I've got on my chin! 😬

          • @bobbified: Hi, there is an ID card in NSW that I have, as I don't drive. Unfortunately, you cannot connect it to Service NSW, so need a physical card in this instance. Ciao

            • @RPGPlayer: wierd - my Photo Card is in my ServiceNSW app

              • @Enuffstuff: You are fortunate with Service NSW. There is a trial (it's been running for well over a year, the longest trial ever) and I am outside the service area as most people are.

          • @bobbified: Where do you go that often that also repeatedly ID's you?

            • +2

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I'm putting it down to the asian genes. I'm just over 40 and still often get carded when going into licensed establishments and bottle shops! Casino checks almost every single time.

              • @bobbified: You can use Digital ID to do alcohol pickups so use cashback sites and order from home. I believe you can get into licensed venues with it at every state but WA & NT.

          • @bobbified: when are you using it for ID purposes, ?

at the casino? just put the license in your back pocket, or with a money clip with your wad of notes

at the post office to get your parcel? you didn't drive there,?

at the RSL club? never been asked i have membership card

      • Keep it in the car

      • +1

AFAIK in WA we don't need to carry a driver's licence. I never have.

        • especially nowadays where they can punch your rego into a terminal and get all your info that way. they already know who you are and your history before they come to your car.

      • +3

I only carry a phone. I have photographed, my Medicare card, passport, driver's licence and each time I've needed to produce ID it's been ok so far.

      • Have it stuck between case & my phone. Don't notice it and it's good until WA goes digital. Doesn't impact any of the NFC payments etc.

    • I'd like to go all digtal, but my phone screen decided to die on me a couple of weeks ago, out of the blue. Luckily I was able to get it repaired under warranty, but now I carry emergency cash and drivers licence with me.

Oh boy I could sure go for tacos

I have a leather bifold by Status Anxiety that I bought around 8-9 years ago that has eight card slots and two note slots.

I browsed wallets a few months ago, a few that stood out were Bellroy's Hide & Seek wallet, Ekster's Parliament wallet and one by Taurus Camp. This one piece folded/origami leather wallet was pretty interesting too.

Really depends on what you need to have in it, the market is saturated these days.

  • +2

    Classic Leather.. 15 years old

I use a slim cardholder as a wallet. Not much in there. Drivers licence, bank card and Medicare card.

As soon as Victoria gets with the times and brings in the electronic driver's licence, I'll be able to get rid of my 'wallet'.

    • +2

You could consider getting a phone case that has space for cards. Bellroy does one, I think it fits 1 or 2 cards.

Trade off is that you won't be able to charge your phone wirelessly without taking the case off.

This is the Bellroy one, it actually holds three cards and it's on sale now.

      • +1

I've actually had a look at those things, but I don't like the look and feel of it. I'm just a picky bastard when it comes to these things. I love using the phone with no cover.

        • +2

This is the way. Phones are supposed to be naked.

      • Now when someone steals your phone they have your ID and the phone the reset password pin numbers get sent to.

        • +1

I do think it’s risky to only carry a phone because if you do lose it you could have a hard time getting home (e.g. no money, no directions, no ID etc.) but if the phone has a passcode or lock anyone who takes it might not be able to access the information anyway.

It would be a pain updating all your details for PIN resets but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess.

          • @Ghost47: Go to telco drivers licence info to have phone number moved to a new SIM, put that Sim in your phone, then reset password for your Google account gets sent to them. Has happened before, most notably to Linus of Linus Tech Tips.

Status anxiety leather thing, still going strong after about 4 or 5 years.

    • Got like 3 or 4 of them. I rotate sometimes but yeah my main black slim and low profile one is still looking like new. Slowly weaning off wallets altogether though…

  • +1

Generally, nothing. My phone has my driver's licence, loyalty cards, private health care, and bank cards.

On the rare occasion I do use a wallet, I use a Bellroy wallet. Generally, is only to have a credit card for parking.

    Frenchie Speed Mini with AirTag.

It's a very small minimalistic wallet, with in-built pocket for an Apple AirTag to go in. Leather quality is really good.

It used to be a lot cheaper when I bought it two years ago, its very expensive now though.

It's replaced my Bellroy Slim Sleeve which I used to use.

This with an airtag because i always misplace my wallet since I don’t use it often anymore. Great quality for a decent price tag.

    • Where do the coins go

      • Wife’s handbag of course

      • In my pocket then the car or home until i have enough to deposit at the bank.

    Why?

I haven't had a wallet for ages and it's great.

Everything is on your phone. Cards, licences etc

    • +2

      Everything is on your phone.

Except for the following in my case:
      - Art Gallery of NSW membership card
      - Sydney Opera House membership card
      - State Library of NSW membership card
      - Kinokuniya Card
      - flybuys card for when I need to redeem my flybuys dollars because I don't have a Coles Financial Services product
      - Timezone card
      - loyalty cards from various eateries who still stamp cardboard instead of using an app

      • +3

Most of those can go on Stocard
In Vic you need a MYKI if using public transport
Good point about the Flybuys dollars - i only do that occasionally and just put the card in a pocket.

        • +1

Most of those can go on Stocard

No they can't. Tell me which ones can.

          • @kerfuffle: I might be wrong for NSW - in Vic most library and membership cards can unless they are using a chip. Anything that uses a barcode usually can.
Part digital life is annoying! BTW, re our cars discussion new Mazda from Japan ordered in January being delivered this week!

            • -1

@bbinc: You are definitely wrong for NSW. These are paid memberships. AGNSW has a chip, SOH has no barcode, Timezone has a chip and good luck getting the Kinokuniya Card member discount with a barcode off the phone.

              • @kerfuffle: Gosh in WA you can use a digital barcode at all libraries. I thought NSW was years ahead of us but clearly not. Flybuys definitely works digital. The others you can just keep in your car.

                • +1

@bobwokeup: STATE Library. Not your local council library. It does have a barcode, but I still prefer bringing the physical card.

And no, you can't redeem flybuys dollars digitally unless you have a Coles Financial Services product.

Furthermore, what if I don't have a car (which was the case until very recently)? Also, cards can warp in the car in the heat.

                  • -1

@kerfuffle: Yep I used digital at the STATE library too. Fair enough each to their own!

True but how often do you redeem Flybuys dollars? Just bring the card when you plan on using it.

Without a car you don’t probably have a backpack so just put it in there. I’ve had cards in the car for years and they never warp. Sounds like a lot of excuses for not going digital, there are always options you just have to be organised.

          • @kerfuffle: Flybuys can for sure.

            • +1

@I like freestuff: No you can't, unless you have a Coles Financial Services product. You can SCAN the barcode to earn points, but you need the physical card to redeem flybuys dollars in store unless you have a CFS product.

        • +1

Myki can go on your phone if you have Android

      • +1
        • flybuys card for when I need to redeem my flybuys dollars because I don't have a Coles Financial Services product

This is the most annoying thing. WOolies can do it digitally, why can't coles. Absolutely crazy.

        • +2

This is the most annoying thing. WOolies can do it digitally, why can't coles. Absolutely crazy.

Because then they'll have the same problem Woolies has: stolen Woolworths Rewards dollars

Forgot to mention that I also use a Bellroy Zip Wallet as my main wallet and sometimes a The Daily Edited cardholder (or the Slim Sleeve) when I don't want to carry the entire contents of my wallet around

  • Digital downside.
Every now and then I am at a checkout. Queue behind me.
And I see - “Apple wallet updating”

    • +1

what android phone is that lol

    • +1

Never seen that shit before on my iphone. Did you get your iphone from wish or something?

    • I’ve used Apple Pay for years and never once seen that. I’ve got heaps of random cards on mine too and not once has it stopped me from paying.

Take a screenshot next time and ask Apple as it seems you’re the only one facing that.

  • +1

pretty much have a card holder stored in the car, that has my drivers license, credit card and any other store, club and membership cards, as i wouldn't be going to any of those places without driving. I keep everything else digital

  • Im an oroton boy.

  • +3

I use the minimalist wallet from Amazon vulkit it is pretty nice and has a small sleeve for some coins/cash. I like it better than the ridge wallets.

    • This is what I'm using, love it. Completely digital is still a little too impractical for me, so the Vulkit is a great compromise. By the time this wallet dies I'm hoping everything I need is digital.

      • Interested to know why digital is not practical?

I’ve been doing it for years and for me the only thing is randomly being forced to produce a drivers license to prove I’m over 18 and I’m more than double that.

        • +1

Almost there with completely digital but it's just short of ripe based on my needs:

Driver's license: No digital version in WA. Also just handy ID to have for post office pick ups, prescriptions etc
TransPerth Smartrider: No digital version available yet, and I'll probably have to carry my daughter's when we go out until she's old enough to carry her own.
Student Card: No digital version, but only need this until I finish my masters in a couple of months
RAC Membership Card: Need to show for fuel / shopping discounts
Health fund card: No digital version available yet
Physical bankcard/spare $50 note: Don't really need to carry this but I have room for a backup in my wallet when EFTPOS acts up..

Everything else is digital (medicare, bank cards, stocard apps for memberships, google wallet etc)

The top two are the must haves, the rest is very practical to have because I'm carrying a wallet anyway for the first two but once they go digital I'll probably make do without. Vulkit footprint is tiny for now.

          • +1

@Cunning Linguist: Oh I see, I can help you a little bit:

Driver's license: don't need to legally carry one in WA and Digital ID is an official app Aus Post app to pickup packages and also alcohol pickups. They are working on allowing us to use it to get into 18+ venues with the same app. I have my drivers license scanned on Google Drive so most places accept it as I am clearly over 18 so depending on your age it might not always work.
I'm surprised you need a physical student card, although some things I get for the extra benefits but I thought a digital copy would be sufficient at Uni/TAFE.
I keep our RAC card in the car as we main use it for fuel and always drive for shopping so it's always there.
Yeah Health fund card is one that has to be physical however what I do is pay for it in full, to get credit card reward points and then claim on the different which gets sent to my bank account. So that way I get more reward points.
I use St George bank if I had to get cash out as they do cardless withdrawals, so I would transfer money from my main bank, but I haven't had to use it yet. I have like $20 in coins in the car as a backup too but pretty much only use that for parking (most are paid by card/app now).

            Hope that helps!!!

            • @bobwokeup: You forgot Smartrider. Yes license is not legally required but it's practical to have on you for various reasons.

Don't get me wrong - I tried completely digital, and just found it too inconvenient. We probably have different definitions of practicality. For me if I miss one event, discount or have to go back home to pick up a card or id more than once in 6 months then that's too much.

It's almost there, hopefully the last couple of laggards get on board in the next year with digital conversion. Right now it feels a bit forced, kind of like the people talking up Palm PDAs in the late 90's as the way of the future. Still needs a bit polishing to be a good substitute.

              • @Cunning Linguist: Oh yeah sorry, that one is a pain for me although I only use it for work so I've just added it to my work lanyard. I don't use it outside of work but if I was young I would so that would be a pain. Can't wait until we can use our phone, it's 2 years off being rolled out though…

As as an OzBargainer I totally get that. It's the events that would get to me although at my age I push back and have never been turned away. Sometimes it is a pain to prove it but with persistence I get my goods or into the venue. I can deal with missing a random discount as I've got a lot better at being prepared wherever I go.

You are right it is almost there but still 1-2 years away to suit everyone (except a lot of retirees).

          • @Cunning Linguist: Depends on the Health fund - with HBF I use a card in Apple Wallet that can be used with the Health POS machines.

            • @whatgift: Oh damn I didn’t know that was possible. I thought it didn’t work for all health insurance companies. I’m glad I just switched to NIB as they have it too. Thanks for that.

            • +1

@whatgift: Good to know. Mine is an private one continued on from where I used to work that is well behind the times in terms of tech, but their cover and price is amazing and I haven't been able to find a better deal through a public health fund.
