What Wallet Do You Guys Use?

My traditional bifold from 10 years ago has finally died and I am looking for a new wallet suggestion, what better place to come then OzBargain! What wallet do you guys use and what would you recommend (I typically carry 6-8 cards and a little bit of cash).

  • While not the cheapest option out there, i use a RMK leatherworks wallet. They are made on the sunshine coast and it has lasted me years instead of months like most wallets. I use to kill wallets every 6-8 months and i am on year two of my RMK one. It is still an minimalist wallet but i have about 10 cars and a apple tag in it and it is still quite small. The only thing that annoys me is that 50 and 100 bucks notes stick out a little but i try not to carry cash.

  • I got a prada wallet from the outlet in Madrid. 100 euros, 5 years old and had been through the washing machine when I left it inside the pants
    Still looks great

Some of my favourite Asian restaurants or shops (food related, not other sh*t you are thinking of) are cash only. I dont mind that, so as long I also get the benefit if they dont pay GST or tax.

I carry a Bally wallet which is absolutely classy. Minimum cards and cash in it, just to keep it slimmer.

  • on sale if you buy 2, this replaced my little Coach wallet… so hard to find a good, compact wallet

slim/minimal + external pocket are musts for me

  • I've used the Aurochs Gravity for the last five years and it's holding up brilliantly. When I bought it, it was comparable to the Bellroy Slim Sleeve but much cheaper.

    • The built in sim card holder and ejector is a nice touch for when travelling.

  • Mont Blanc. My current one has been around 7 years. Seems sturdy so far.

  • I've been rocking one of these for about 7 years https://www.tailfeather.com.au/collections/wallets

Not cheap but well worth it imo. I put some leather conditioner on it once every 12 months or so and it's going strong. Lot's of different styles in case you like a slim wallet or a more traditional bifold.

I mostly use digital and don't always carry my wallet. But there are times when it comes in handy like
    - starting a bar tab (most places i've been to still require a physical card to be left behind the bar)
    - traveling in a country with a mostly cash economy
    - going somewhere where a medicare/health insurance card is needed
    - physical opal card if you're into that
    - physical gift card if you're into that sometimes
    - physical gym key card

I'm sure there's lots of other scenarios where a wallet still helps you not lose cash / cards / receipts

I'll add that I don't do coins in my wallet though, makes it too bulky, on the rare occasion I carry coins those go in a pocket

  • Still using a slim Palmera wallet that was popular on here few years ago.

Holding up really well but looks like they don't exist anymore unfortunately.

    • I still have my old one! It does still hold up, but I preferred my wallet vertical rather than horizontal. Just pedantic really.

I go to Etsy and filter by handmade in Australia and work direct with someone making leather goods. My current one is a slim line kangaroo leather, fits 6 cards (3 either side) and has a middle pouch for cash (which I rarely use). On the front I had them imprint a personal motto/reminder using a letter punch. Was super cheap, like $50 and it's handmade and personal. Well worth it.

  • I used to use a broccolini band but recently upgraded.

  • I have a nomad card wallet with a couple of cards and a couple notes for emergency use

Its fun watching all these digital only kids flip out when eftpos goes down.

    • Hasn’t happened to me and if does then I miss out, that’s a small risk I’m willing to take. Funny how you assume we are all young. Get with the times it’s 2023 and adapt to change!!!

      • +1

Don't assume everyone that does it is young, only that they tend to have a tantrum like a child when it finally bites them in the ass. Seen it plenty of times. Working with eftpos machines gives a very different perspective on their reliability. Always keep a cash backup.

What is wrong with you? You said it yourself “kids” I wasn’t assuming - that was you with how you said it. If it doesn’t work just walk away. I’ve rarely had to use cash.

          • @bobwokeup: You got rather upset over this huh. You definately don't sound like the kind of customer that would be having a tantrum at staff if the system goes down.

            • @mitt: No I’m just shocked! Apparently everyone has a tantrum in your eyes. Only stupid people would suggest that and get mad at staff for something outside of their control. #mindblown

How often has eftpos gone down in your many decades on this planet?

          • @smartazz104: Frequently enough that I made a point of creating procedures for sites to use when it happens. If you don't work on the retailer side of the machine you interact with the system perhaps 30 seconds a day on average, when you get phonecalls every time there is an issue with the system you get a better perspective on how reliable it is. It's often a comms issue but particular banks or payment types can go down occasionally too.

          • @smartazz104: Worked for a big box retailer for half a year. EFTPOS broke down 2 or 3 days during that time.

            • @tikei: Exactly that’s only 1.6% of the time it broke down and there could have been an underlying issue.

    Tac Wallet (https://www.globalshop.com.au/products/tac-wallet)

It can't be burned or shot with an arrow, and has a nice carabener for clipping to your belt for safety.

…I enjoy gimmicks. I also have the tactical sunglasses!

In another life I'd probably be all digital but I violently went in the other direction and now don't own a smartphone to go digital with.

  • 2 options, depending on where I’m going.
5 card stainless steel wallet, or nothing. It usually stays in the car.

  • Been using a peak design stand wallet, though I don't use that feature as much as I thought I would.

  • Currently using the Apple magsafe wallet for my most non-digital cards and a Hermes Calvi for cash, cards not frequently used and my airtag. The Calvi usually stays in my bag and I find this works quite well. The calvi can also fit coins if I somehow end up using them.

  • Just had the same dilemma , didn't want to carry a massive wallet with many cards cause just about everything is digital, except drivers license W.A. for :( … I bought this as a comprise:

    https://www.davidjones.com/product/fossil-neel-black-bifold-…

has a smaller wallet that inserts into the larger wallet with window that fits a license and a card or two….bit on the $$ side but was a fathers day present so all good.

  • I'm all for going digital but I still can't fully commit. Hotels from example tend to still need a physical card for the security deposit. Likewise there are always a couple of cards, like a bus pass, that you still need physical. Until I can be 100% digital with all debit/credit cards, loyalty cards, transit passes, health insurance card etc. I'll continue to carry a wallet.

    • -1

Fair call although once it happens to you once you remember for next time. I also plan ahead for hotels and public transport. Aside from a couple of times I had to find alternative options it’s rarely affected me and been doing it for years. Loyalty cards are all on Rewardle or you can use Stocard. Health insurance can be on a digital wallet, depending on the company, plus most don’t often use it.

Ps my wife usually carries a small handbag so we have a backup credit card there.

      • It's been a little while since I did the research and maybe it is possible for me now. I just can't justify the effort if at the end of the day if I will still need to carry a wallet.

        • Yeah it took me a while to go full digital. I did things over time and I love not taking a wallet out. So much easier.

  • Buy one made from a leather worker and get exactly what you want, they don't cost much either around 1-200 mark and you choose the design, colour and material.. I always use reddit leather classifieds, bought about 4 wallets there so far.

  • Bally bi fold.

  • Been using a leather bifold my dad gave me for the last 18 years. Never store coins in them and don't carry them with anything else in my pocket

  • Have been using a Flipside Wallet (Version 2 or 3) for around 10 years. Apart from a few scuff marks its still brand new.
