BMW G 310 R (MY22) Motorcycle $7785 Ride Away (Save $750) @ BMW Motorrad Dealers

1090

Description from website:

The unconventional single-cylinder engine has a special design: The cylinder head has been rotated 180 degrees backwards, which pushes the vehicle’s centre of gravity towards the front wheel. This makes the G 310 R more agile and easier to control. With the new electronic gas system – Ride by Wire – the throttle response is also always stable. And the self-reinforcing slipper clutch makes switching gears child's play when you are stuck in heavy traffic. In addition, thanks to the effective combustion and secondary air system, this bike meets the strict Euro 5 standards.

R 1250 GS in white. What's the point of getting a beemer unless the bike is half-naked and you have a fat boxer engine under you knees?

    • +1

Your talking about motor bikes right?

      • … yes

    • I will go the classic K75/100 over that anytime!

      • Stock, sure. I prefer a more comfortable riding position. Still love the boxers though

        • Definitely. Never been one for those cafe racers when it comes to riding enjoyment.

Does it look awesome? Yes! Does it look a pain to ride? Also yes!

If only the boxers didn't look like stingrays

    • I love my boxer (RT) as much as the next person, bulletproof and wonderful as ever - but if you ride a K-series or S1000RR or whatever, you'll likely change your mind. They are gorgeous machines, and ridiculously lovely to ride.

      • I'm sure the the S1000RR is a great ride but my sports bike days are over, and I don't think I'll like a heavy tourer like a K. I've had my license for nearly 20 years and my friends and family have insisted that I don't get another bike, but the boxer is "conservative" enough to sneak past them and still be fun to ride. The K 1600 B looks slick though, beautiful bike.

Gave it a + as it’s great to see a motorcycle on here instead of the usual EV car lemmings

KTM 390 gives you more "fun" as a single cylinder.
Otherwise, just get MT-03 or MT-07 IMO.

    • Came here to say this. Can't find a single thing I like about this bike.

      • It's the badge. They're banking on you liking the badge.

    • Yamaha MT-07 is super fun.

I'm on my open licence but still love the MT-07 for the low-down torque and thrills

  • +2

They really have to do something about the mirrors, totally ruin the look, barend mirrors help somewhat, electronic/camera mirrors are probably the future.

Picture of the S1000XR Triple Black shows Akra slip on, possibly an error, it's only standard with M Sport.

Seriously, if you were to buy a BMW motorbike, get an actual BMW such as S1000, R1250, K1600. Don't bother with craps with a BMW badge.

    • Nope. Don’t agree with that… Mate just bought a F900 with all the do dads and it is a fantastic bike. So smooth, comfortable and sits so planted on the road. A really good all round bike. Great as a commuter in city traffic, easy to throw around on the weekend twistys. Plenty of power to haul all his touring crap.

Only downside i found is the amount of tech on the bike. All the options you can scroll through. Just to change some settings, you need to dive through 15 levels of menu options…

  • 25kw’s 😂

  • ninja 400 does 0-100 in 4 seconds and a second hand is way cheaper

    • How much?

      • A $4k ninja 650 will do it in 3.4s and is much more rider friendly (low down torque)

        • Lol a 4k ninja 650??? Welcome to 2023 where 4k will barely get you a 5 year old 300…. Dreaming

  • +1

so glad im picking up a used mt07 for the same price

  • I thought I could get a MY22 BMW for < $8K ,
and then saw the word 'bike' …

  • What would you recommend to a learner? After a supersport one.

    • +1

Similar to cars, it all boils down to budget.

The import thing is keep riding to get your experience levels up. Get a proper bike as well, one with atleast 300cc. I've tried a few higher CC bikes (BMW F900, CB600, T120 etc) and I can say that riding my 300 prepared me for it.

Litre bikes are a different beast. You can get to 100 on first gear!

    • +3

If you are on L's or P's personally I'd buy an older second hand bike. You won't cry as much when you drop it a a few times then. Buy your screamer when you have more experience.

    • +2

First bike? Don’t get a super sport styled one. Get a naked.

You will drop it, and fairings are so expensive to repair/replace.

Also, the geometry of sports bikes is not as easy or forgiving for new riders. Naked and commuter bikes are better suited to learners.

If you really want to have fun on a learner bike, get a 450 Super Motard. They smoke just about everything. They are very light, handle very well and feel very familiar to people who have ridden at least a dirt bike in their life.

    • +1

What would you recommend to a learner? After a supersport one.

An upright naked bike like a Honda CBR. They are easier to handle and go in traffic. Get very familiar with the road and bike techniques, build up your muscle memory, before going crazy with a supersport which is easy to stall or run straight into the back of vehicles…

    Seeking a LAMS bike…?
Like any bike or car purchase, or when seeking food, a new partner, whatever. Go for a test ride!

Big things to consider before looking at a particular bike - know this is a 300cc. If you are a mid/average sized guy, then you will prob want to look at something bigger like a MT07L. You may not even want a naked bike and might prefer a SS.

For many many many reasons, my preference is with Yamaha on LAMS bikes.

    Smaller/younger rider, consider either a R15, R3, or R7L in a SS. MT03, MT07L in a Naked.
The R7 and 07 can be modded after the restriction period (if conditional on your license) and you will find they with a few changes they become a bit of a quicker bike.
Servicing, insurance, repairs and the likes are far better on a Yamaha too.

Others to consider, Honda, Kwaka, or as much as I hate to say it Ducati Monster… the list goes on…

Unless you are Gardner or Rossi, the difference the bike will make to your riding ability will be minimal, therefore, get the bike you want, like the most and fits your needs.

You can always save up and start a collection! :)

    • Test riding a partner. How.does that work?

      • +2

hahaha - not sure if I need/should reply to this.

I recently bought a stock low k's Ducati 848 to replace my heavily modified one as my daily and when i went to pick it up i came home with a Diavel too. The missus initially had the shits till she saw it but then was like "I'd ride that bike". So i said how about we get a learner legal bike so you can get your license and we can ride together. She wants a Honda CBR to learn on, i hate them. This 310 looks awesome. Wouldn't mind adding a black one to my collection, for the missus to ride. Thanks for the post

    • cool

    • +2

If i was going to have a second bike that was LAMS friendly, personally it would be a Royal Enfield. That way I've got a cool retro bike thats rideable in its own right.

  • With this you're entitled to not use your blinker

time to switch to electric. With the noise from hell, you won't be popular ;)

    • -4

      THAT noise saves lives.

      • -3

        FACTS.
Honestly without loud exhaust, cars won't even know that you're there while looking at their phone driving.

        • +4

As someone who rides a tuned GSXR600 with a full Yoshimura system going from the headers all the way to the can. I can tell you that exhaust noise has no effect in saving my life. In fact, studies have been done that that notion is a myth and nothing more.

          • @he11bent: That would come down to drivers awareness and not paying attention to their surroundings.
People are too occupied in their car with other things than their surrounding.

When im in the car, if i hear a bike coming, I know to look out for the bike beforehand.
From experience I know the loud exhaust at least makes drivers to pay attention or acknowledge that i'm right next to them, that is if they're not pumping their music at 120%

Anything that can help drivers aware that you're there would be considered as saving lives imho.

            • +1

I know the loud exhaust at least makes drivers to pay attention…
Anything that can help drivers aware that you're there…

Loud pipes dont do this. All the noise from these loud pipes is ejected backwards, away from your direction of travel. Most motorcycle accidents are from the front.

Some of the greatest risk to motorcyclists are the riders themselves, and no amount of loud pipes is going to save that 50+ empty nester returning to riding after 30 years and getting straight on a brand new BMW SS1000RRR or GSX1000RRR because "I'll be ok, I used to ride sports bikes back in the day…"

Loud pipes are a symptom of small penis syndrome and a "look at me" complex. I have been riding motorcycles for over 30 years on the road and found as I moved out of my youth, that this whole "LoUd PiPeZ SaVe LiVeZ!" mantra was bullshit. If loud pipes "saved lives" it would be an ADR requirement for motorcycles to be 120dB all the time.

The fact is, loud pipes dont "save lives". They are not a magic warning beacon to alert all and sundry to your exact location on the road. The physics of you claims dont even support the claim and anecdotal evidence of 1 or 2 cars hearing you does not solidify the mantra.

In open environments, the noise is ejected backwards, not forward or sideways. So, the only people that can "hear" your bike are the people behind you, that, for the most part, can already see you, not the guy in front that is about to cross into your lane, nor the guy in the side street about to pull out in front of you.

If you want to get some loud arse penis extending, "Kimmy, look at moi… Look at moi Kimmy" pipes, then just get them, dont try and justify it in the name of "safety".

              • @pegaxs: i totally agree with you there. Loud pipes aren't a safety mechanism.
My answer typed on the web don't really explain my what i was saying or thinking at the time that answer lands on the page.

By slapping on a loud exhaust it doesn't magically saves lives. I was trying to saying it in a situational perspective of what if this or that were to happen how could i make myself noticeable (eg. hiviz, lights, horn, noise from exhaust, right mindset when riding, awareness, anticipation of how other people are on the road, anything that can help you to survive another day on the road). At the end of the day yes it comes down to the rider themselves how they ride and nothing will prevent you from getting hit even if you're the best rider in the world.

I took the 0.00000001% (anything better than 0%) into the category to 'saves lives'.
I guess the word 'save lives' varies from how each people see the meaning.

  • Are BMW working on creating the most ugly mufflers? They are almost there… that one on the F 900 R is awful.

  • If I buy two and tie them up can I ride them with a car licence?

    • +2

No because you'll have 4 axles, hence its considered a truck.

    • No, because it would then be considered a quadricycle and they are banned on Austrailan roads…

  • I own one since 2017. Happy to answer any questions.

I did not ride it as much as I'd have liked to. But its a great little bike and is very dependable. I can only imagine that the newer variants have improved upon the first one.

  • Can anyone suggest a LAMS bike with good ride quality? I was thinking maybe a Yamaha V-star or something like that. One thing I didnt like about my old Honda was when I stepped off the throttle I had that immediate engine-braking sensation. I'm old and don't care how fast it goes.

    • What is the old Honda?

      • CBR250R. Somebody stole it.

        The Honda CMX500 looks good.

Don't be scared of an older SV650 either. They are very, very reliable and near bulletproof.

    • Yamaha MT-07 series.
      Kawasaki z650's or 650 Vulcan.
      Ducati 659.
      Honda CB650R or F.
      CFMoto NK650.
      Suzuki SV650.

      • Thanks for this, appreciate it.

  • i want a 1000c crotch rocket, but insurance is high, so i think i will go with a 600cc

  • +3

Not really a deal I would say. Was same price last year as well when I bought it.

    Short yet long Review:

    Pros:
    * Buttery smooth while cruising in 6th gear between 80-100 kmph
    * Adjustable levers
    * Looks pretty damn good( Obviously looks are subjective)
    * Quite torquey, Getting past traffic is a breeze
    * Decent braking Power ( ABS is a bit too aggressive though)
    * The tyres offer good grip over dry and wet roads. I would have preferred Michelin Road 5 instead of the stock Michelin street radial though.

    Cons:
    * Be ready for tremendous wind blast if you live in a windy area (think Melbourne), so a windscreen is a must
    * Heats up considerably if you get stuck in traffic on a hot day
    * Vibrations felt all across the board be it pegs, handlebar etc on lower rpms. Not an issue past 60 kmph though.
    * The gearbox is extremely clunky. The gear shifts are not smooth at all
    * The clutch is on the heavier side, so not ideal for city traffic.
    * The engine is not refined at all at lower speeds, so if you are primarily using it for city rides you won't enjoy it combined with a clunky gearbox and heavy. It only feels refined once you go past the 60 kmph mark
    * Low Fuel Economy, Only getting 20kmpl in city and 25 kmpl on highways.
    * No Centre stand
    * No TFT display and Bluetooth connectivity

Overall I wouldn't recommend this bike if you are planning to use this as a daily commuter as the bike struggles in lower speeds due to the unrefined engine, clunky gearbox and heavy clutch. But if you are only going to take this out occasionally for a mix of city+highway rides or purely highway rides go for it. If you are looking for an alternative, unfortunately there are not a lot of options in Australia when it comes to 200-350 cc motorcycles. However RE has launched the hunter 350 which is selling like hot cakes in India. Would be worthwhile to give that and the Honda CB300 a test ride.

  • My missus needs a learner bike and she wants a CBR. I don’t want her to get one as I don’t like how they look. At least this looks decent

    • My missus… she wants a CBR. I don’t want her to get one as I don’t like how they look.

BM-Trouble-U. Expensive parts, expensive service. Over complicated engineering. You are buying an expensive blue badge.

Best ever was watching my F800GS tail lights exiting my driveway, never to be seen again… what was I thinking. Went back to Honda and what a relief !

  • Any suggestions 200-300CC scooter?

    • +1

Budget? No use saying "Get the Vespa GTS 300" if you are not willing to spend $14k on a scooter…
Usage? Commute to work only. Work and play? Play only??
Location? You live packed city density or coastal fringe town?

      • I live in Sydney CBD. I will mostly use it around the city and go to the nearby beaches. I won't go on highways. It's more like for fun. I prefer second hand scooter though. I want something with a good storage and reliable scooter. My budget is 4k for second hand one.

        • +2

If you are living in and around Sydney and only going shopping and to the beach, you dont need a 300cc scooter. A scooter that big is more aimed at highway speeds. A 150cc~ish sized scooter would probably do what you want to do and be well within your price bracket.

Bikes/scooters I would look at in that range would be the Kymco Like series if you're into Retro, Euro-styles scooters, or their Agility range if you are looking at something a little more modern looking.

You might be able to get a Vespa Primavera or Sprint for around that budget, but it's going to be a much older, used version. And let's face it, They are nice and well made (for an Italian vehicle) but they are expensive if anything goes wrong.

You could also look at what Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki have. All very reputable brands in the scooter space. Very reliable, but might be a bit more expensive than your budget. Low km used would probably be the best bet here.

Lastly, and this all depends on where you live and how far it is and the speeds you need to do, but Fonz Moto make the Arthur range of EV scooters. You can get a used one of these with very low KM and under your budget, but you need to get the Arthur 2 or 3 at a minimum. (the Arthur 1 only does 50km/h and is for car licenses in Qld and SA??)

I have the Arthur 2+ model and it easily does 75km/h. More than enough for urban 50~60km/h roads. I work 6km from home, so 12km round trip per day and I can get 4~5 days worth of going to work on it before it needs a charge. You can charge it up at home and it costs about $0.40~$0.80 to fill. Plug it in at night and it's ready to go at 100% the next morning. If you live in an apartment, you can even remove the battery, take it up to your apartment and plug it in to charge there. OR, do what I do, and charge it at work… free powah, baby!! :D

Scooters I would not recommend… Sym. Peugeot, Super Soco (also own one of these), VMoto, Any of the obscure Chinese brands.

          • +1

@pegaxs: Thank you very much mate. Fonz looks interesting. I didn't know about electric scooter before. You have change my perspective :)

  • Getting Ls in Vic is expensive like $700 if not more anyone know where it's cheaper?

    • In Queensland apparently. And shorter LAMs restriction period too.

  • looks like a duke

    • Ummm… respectfully disagree. Just cos it has painted rims doesn't make it look like a duke. Then the Aprilia Tuono v4 1100 factory also looks like a duke cos it has painted rims.

The duke's face and dash is very different!

  • "now comes with a modern daytime running light. " Impressive.
