This seller doesn't seem to have any prior ratings, are they a trusted source ?

      • +1

They are "Catch approved and online", not sure what that means but I can't see how they wouldn't ship the goods.. or Catch will refund you.

    • +3

I purchased a 64gb from expansys and it took 3 weeks to arrive to perth which I thought I was pretty reasonable.
I also ordered a 1tb storage upgrade from Aliexpress for $130 which arrived a day later.
Any one thinking about purchasing a steam deck I would recommend buying the 64gb and upgrading yourself. Extremely easy to do with plenty of YouTube videos to help and will save you a bomb

          • @Lord G: Havent had any issues with the WALRAM SSD with slow downs or errors at all?

            • +1

@ZeroHarmony: Zero issues after 6 weeks and I have filled the SSD with games to see if there would be any errors after purchasing but no issues. Obviously I'm only speaking from my own experience but with that said my mate was the one who told me to purchase that ssd as he also has one installed on his steam deck and has had zero issues over the past 6months.

        • +4

I can't post the link but go onto Aliexpress and search WALRAM M.2 nmve SSD 1TB 512GB M.2 SSD 2230 NVMe PCIe Gen 3x4 SSD 3500M/S

          Mod: Fixed and republished link

          • @Lord G: How does the SSD work with stuff outside of just Steam installs? Is it formatted once you put it in to only be useable for installs, or can you do that, and use it as a standard file storage?

            ie,

If I put one of those in my Deck, and then install the 2 or 3 Steam games I'd ever buy, can I then use the leftover space to put all my ROMs or would I have to rely on a MicroSD?

Bc the price per tb on your's is fine with me, but I would never fill 1tb of Steam stuff. I'm literally gonna rebuy Spider-Man PS4, maaaaybe GTA5, and that's about it. The rest of the Deck's use is gonna be emulation.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: Yes you can fill it however you want. It just is formatted for the linux file system, but that's how you'll be running your emulators anyway. That being said, if mainly doing emulation, you might be better off just using SD cards. The performance of the SSD for most games is well overstated particular if you get an A2 class micro SD card.

              • @modiika: Thanks! I've been looking at a few 2230's here and there when I've had a minute. Likely would never need a whole tb, but your one is 33 bucks more to go from 512 to 1tb, that's a no brainer at that point.

For me, I have a 200gb Micro SD that's been burning a hole in my drawer for a couple years now, so I'd happily use that for ROMs and whatnot, but I'd like to be a bit more future proof'd, I have a 256gb USB in the Xbox X with just PS2 games on it, and sure, there's weeeeeell over a hundred on there, but it's pretty well chockers, and I'd be using the SteamDeck for 360/Wii U stuff, which should end up eating quite a bit more space. However, I've had a hundred emulator machines over the years and know better, that it's only worth keeping the stuff I actually want on there, but nonetheless, going up to 7th/8th gen games is definitely going to eat the space.

I guess I'm just uneasy about spending another hundred and change when I just bought this thing for nearly 800 that I didn't really need in the first place. I don't know. You say your SSD from Ali came quite quickly, mine is saying mid March, is that a load of bollocks, or will I be waiting over a month? bc if so that might be the push to make me not consider it, but if you say it would come within a week or two, I might bite, (profanity) it.

                • @TheDukeOfNukem: I think you confused me with an earlier poster. I havent upgraded my internal SSD. I've just gotten by so far with a fast microsd card.

I'm also holding off on the SSD for the moment. I do plan to do it, but probably in a month or so. I think if you are primarily just emulating, i dont see how its necessary. I've had no problem playing steam games off my sd card so far. I plan to try Yuzu emulation in the next few days, but I dont think the SD card would be a bottle neck for that.

You can also find 256gb and 512gb SSD 2230s for a fair bit cheaper than the 1tbs. I've been considering just getting a 512, or getting a 256 to start with. This store: https://www.pbtech.com/au/search?sf=2230&search_type= has SSD 2230s in 128gb for $24.62 and 256 for $61.54. I've been toying with the idea of doing one of those as they are local, should arrive faster, and probably wont need more than that internally. But hard to resist the urge to jus get 1tb and be done with it. I feel if i got one of those it would just be delaying the inevitable for a few months.

                  • @modiika: lmao oof, yeah, I thought you were the other dude, my bad.

This one is 64 after tax for a half tb, tempted to jump on it, earlier poster said Walram's drive served them well. Bit over a hundred for the 1tb variant, not sure which way to lean tbh. Problem for me as a Chromebook and home console user, if ahdn when the Steamdeck dies or I move on, this drive is entirely useless to me https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005041879909.html?spm=a2…

                    • @TheDukeOfNukem: Good prices!. I've been leaning towards the Sabrent drives, as they are new (rather than oem/grey market drives like most of the 2230s on ali) and tested and designed with steam deck in mind (i.e. low power draw). However, these would probably work fine and i'd maybe never notice. Its a pretty good saving.

Not sure i want to wait 6 weeks for the drive either, because that means i'd need to decide now. But then again its cheap and the sabrent drives on Amazon are about a 4 week wait as well.

But yeah same I have no use for the drives. Apparently you should keep the old drive you take out, in case you ever need to RMA the deck. Valve will apparently repair it for Aussies but you have to pay international shipping.

                      • @modiika: tbh my new big worry is that you'd lose the 64gb when putting in an SSD. Supposedly you have to reflash SteamOS to the new SSD, which implies to me it's replacing the 64gb rather than adding to it…64gb may be (profanity) all, but if I was this close to pulling the pin on a 128gb SSD a couple minutes ago for 20/25 bucks, then 64gb is half of that, which means I'd be paying 20/25 bucks for 64gb, which is (profanity) insanity. Might keep my choices between 512 and 1tb afterall.

In any case, Miles Morales is supposedly around 40 something gig on Steam, and considering Spidey is about the only game I know I'll rebuy on Steam, I can get buy with that and the OS on the built in drive, and all the ROMs on the SD. Definitely the cheapest way forward.

                        • @TheDukeOfNukem: Yes you definitely lose it. While the 64gb is eMMC, its actually sitting in the SSD slot. So yeah, you lose that space. You either copy it as is to new drive, or set up a new installation on the new drive.

    • That's such a convenient way to get one now, $717 with postage. Take the GST away and it's only a 14% premium on the US price.

    • Do you know about the warranty?

Source from their info (Found via google rather than their navigation)

  • Don’t know how to change the store.

Is Valve planning to sell officially in Australia?

    • +2

rumoured that pretty soon they'll annouce drops in a new region

but highly doubt it'll be Australia

    • +2

I don't think Valve will ever sell hardware here. They got burned by the ACL (forced to offer refunds on Steam) and I think they see us as a small market more hassle than it's worth.

      • I remember buying my Steam Link from EB Games, so they've done it before.

        • +1

Must Hodl until EB Games start selling SD!

Don't want to buy grey import.

          • @vash12: I have some discount "student" gift cards. HODLing till it comes to EB for a decent price.

        • That was before they got stung.

          • @dr-collossus: They did carry the Valve Index recently (granted, almost 2 years after it was released)

        • I bought my Valve Index from them too

  • +7

I should stop looking at those deals. I wanna hold until steam deck OLED or whatever the next iteration is

    • -1

Same here it's so tempting at this price but it's rumoured the 2nd gen is around the corner.

      • I would doubt that a 2nd gen is coming out (and being available) in Australia in 2023. Given how long the 1st gen took to be here. Plus there is no supply chain rumours currently which indicates that it is still in internal development.
        That’s my guess anyway…

      • While they have commented that the next version would not look at performance improvements, rather screen and battery improvements (so possibly oled). It's not been stated to be in active development, just what they intend to do next when they get a chance.

They have only just started meeting demand in their initial markets, the next steps is to expand to more markets. I think we may see an improved steam deck in at best mid 2024.

I think in terms of the processor/gpu, i dont expect them to change it faster than a 3-4 year cycle. They seem to want to provide developers with a large target platform and will only go to the effort of upgrading otherwise for a meaningful improvement. I think Valves hope, not sure if realistic, is that they can reach a significant install base of steam decks and get at least some developers optimising for the platform. Which will be more meaningful long term.

  • Is it possible to cast the steam deck onto a tv and play co op games like it takes two? Ideally using 2x controllers (rather than the deck controllers)

Asking cause I've been thinking of getting a switch for personal gaming but also would like the ability to play with my partner in tv mode, but now that the deck is coming down in price it may be be the better option?

    • +2

yes, there's an official dock https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeckdock but you can also use any usb C to HDMI adapter

      • A dock where you have to manually plug in a cable to the steamdeck? Wtf were they thinking

        • Well the port is at the top

          • @DDman7: But its a dock… They should have thought about this when they designed the steamdeck..

            • @justtoreply: Clearly the dock was an afterthought, and I'd rather it be that way than having the location of the port be an afterthought

Just some Feedback re Expansys. I ordered a 1tb Steamdeck from them on Tuesday 24/1. Yes i know i should of ordered a 64gb and purchased a budget 1tb for the upgrade but im lazy AND stock was available (very un-ozbargain like). Its been nearly 2 weeks now. Contacted them daily for an update as I have no tracking information or otherwise. I'm about to lodge a dispute with paypal to get a refund. I know a number of folks have had similar experiences with expansys but I have used them previously and figured an in stock item would actually be instock.

    • Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like if there's ever anything wrong with the steam deck then the warranty is going to be near impossible to chase up on… a slightly lower price is not worth the hassle

      • Yeah I actually went this way as I thought at least expansys would handle warranty. Rather than much around with valve and whomever I purchased a drive from. I think a few folks from the previous deal received theirs pretty quick.

    • I ordered the 64gb version yesterday afternoon from expansys and had tracking come through lastnight.

Only reason I pulled the trigger is because I used expansys years ago for some phone or such and had no issue.

Perhaps the 1TB versions are modded on a per-purchase basis and hence the lead-in time? Sucks about the lack of communication though.

      • Yeah same mate I got a phone from them years ago no problem. Ill keep hanging on.

  • Looks like kogan reduced their price to 769 when added to cart, price not updated until in shopping kart or maybe i did something wrong(?). Fulfilled by Kogan.com does give a better peace of mind. https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/tech-tack-valve-steam-deck-64gb…

    • When in cart, your one says sold by Tech Tack. Vchain or whatever they were called, via Kogan, were another few bucks cheaper too, unless I'm missing something, neither are actually coming from Kogan.

      Edit: Both say this

This product is sold by a third party Marketplace Seller.

For Warranty claims, this product is covered by the Kogan Guarantee.

Go with the $14 less one I guess. I did.

  • +1

Ordered the 64GB yesterday. Received shipping notification and tracking number an hour later. Delivered today (but missed delivery).

    • From Skyphonez?

      • +1

        Yeah, mate.
