NOTE: as of 8:30am AEDT it is out of stock but Amazon still allows you to backorder at same price.

Amazon just dropped the price of Duet 5 down to $597 again. Note this is the AAU version which includes the USI pen, with Gen 2 processor (2.55Ghz vs 2.4Ghz CPU).

Was cheaper at $547 at Officeworks on Black Friday, but the Officeworks version is BAU which does not include the pen.

Only downside is this is Chromebook which means no native Netflix HD app support. But web version of Netflix apparently works just as well (including support for offline viewing).

JB Hifi selling for $809, and MWave for $799.

NB: remember to powerwash once - some have reported improvements in speed etc. Unverified but doesn't hurt!

Damn that's a good deal. I picked this up for $547 on the OW deal and absolutely love it.
Great find OP, I was waiting for a good price for over a month… For an extra $50 I'd spring for the pen on this deal for sure, even though I doubt I'd ever really use it lol…

    • +1

Every tablet/iPad I've purchased I got the pen (Samsung galaxy, Apple iPad) etc. I'm pretty sure I've almost never used the pen haha.

And this one sticks out on the case, so it is not the most convenient when carrying tablet around….

  • I've got this and can use the Netflix app fine? Disney, Prime, Kodi all work pretty well too

    • I've got this and can use the Netflix app fine?

The Android app limits you to 480p.

  • That's a solid price for the Chromebook eco system. Seeing these instore they look premium too. Great find!

  • The OLED display makes these a pleasure to use. I have the 4gb version and it runs great so the 8gb is a bonus.

  • Is this a good replacement for laptop?

    • +1

Yes, but research Chromebook vs [insert current OS here]

    • +2

Nope, at least not for many functions

      • How about printing documents? Does it work well?

        • Everything achievable with Chrome browser works on Chrome OS. Only issue is lack of office.

          • +2

@Toxinor: I believe you can use web version of office 365 which is free?

          • @Toxinor: Should be able to enable Linux and run libre office which is an OK replacement, especially if it's just for hone/study use

    • Other than games which you have to pay for most of the time, I can't think of anything else. There are possibly over a million of apps that are available for free through AppStore.

    • For productivity/web surfing/video watching yes.

For games - no. This is an arm-based CPU so more like an android phone, and the CPU is not as powerful as modern phones such as Samsung s23 or their S8 tablets. But those cost 2x more.

MS Office android app doesn't work on Chromebook but you can find Microsoft Office 365 PWAs like Outlook and OneDrive, and they work great on Chromebooks. Progressive web apps are like mobile app versions of a website but with more features, such as offline use, the option to pin them to the taskbar, support for push notifications and updates and access to hardware features.

Ultimately the answer depends on what software would you want to install on your laptop, and whether ChromeOS supports that software fully.

TBH you'll spend the majority of your time trying to look for alternative ways how to do things your windows laptop could have done. Not only that, if you dont have internet connectivity 100% of the time, it becomes near useless. Not worth my time IMO.

  • I have the original Pixelbook and looking at upgrading this year. Should I get this or hold out for something with an Intel chipset? Have had Linux set up and run Gimp and Libreoffice but it's been a while since I used it, so support for this is not really important. Apart from that have a couple of Android apps and games that I currently use as well

    • i love the pixelbook! i am also looking to upgrade so im holding out on the hp dragonfly pro chromebook, which debuted in CES just recently.

      • Just Googled it and certainly looks worthy enough to replace the Pixelbook, it'll most like cost around 2k by the time it gets here though :(

  • Thoughts on whether this is suitable for a primary school grade 3 BYOD?
I'm thinking it might not be durable enough

    • Someone else might be able to chime in, but as I understand I don't think snapping on the keyboard holds up the screen?

If the above is true, they'd need to use the kickstand etc and feel like that's a possible break point

    • +5

Don't overspend on your grade 3 kid, get a regular laptop style chromebook for half the price. At grade three thy usually can't keep track of their hat and jumper let alone a removable keyboard

      • +4

Another idea is if you have an old laptop lying around, experiment with installing ChromeOS Flex on it to see if it speeds it up enough

        • Not a bad idea if the school doesn't need Android apps. If they don't have an old laptop one of the 2nd hand laptop that pop up on ozbargain + chrome OS would be good.

      • Yeah seeing what they did to my surface wasn't pretty…
New question, what is the OzBargain preferred 9yo BYOD Kids Chromebook? I couldn't pinpoint TBH

    • Nothing will be durable enough for a 9 yr old. I seen what kids do to these things inside their bags. They get tossed around like its a toy. Sure you get the exemptions to that rule but for most 9 yr olds. It will get abused.

  • NB: remember to powerwash once

    What does that mean?

    • Factory reset:

      Sign out of your Chromebook.
Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
      Select Restart.
In the box that appears, select Powerwash. Continue.

      • Is this not the state it comes in new anyway?

      • +1

So I should put the Gurney away? 😉

  • Is this a good upgrade for the original duet 10.1?

I own the original one is just soooo slow if you do anything more than browsing a simple website

    • A bit bigger. Not as hand friendly.

      • +4

        Must resist with the innuendo….

  • I have an ipad pro 11 coming, reading about this device, it looks like it's perfect for browsing and watching videos and is cheaper with keyboard included. Anyone used both?

    • +3

      Not really a valid comparison

iPad Pro is iOS ecosystem, and m1 is much faster (faster than laptops in some cases). Need to add between $200 (third party) to $450 (apple) for keyboard, so you are at almost 3x the price.

This is OLED but lower resolution and refresh rate. Also 13.3" vs 11".

I would say this is better for watching video (due to OLED contrast + bigger screen) and if you don't need m1 power. For everything else iPad pro kills it (at a price).

      • +1

I got it for 947 which seemed like a good deal. I also imagine ipad being usable for much longer than this device. My phone is 120hz, going back to 60hz might be noticeable

        • I assume that doesn't include keyboard or pen so very different price category.
Both good products, depending on your use case and budget.

          • @sharky_k: correct. In hindsight the 799 s7 plus was the best deal, but it won't be getting updates for much longer

  • does this have point to connect wired headphone?

A month or so ago I bought a Lenovo Duet 10.1 for $277 and I love it.
It seems to integrate all the things I usually do, in a simple way like a Pixel 7 phone. From the get-go, it synched all google things with it. The 50+ old Chrome bookmarks from my Windows machine, Google Photos online and stuff on my phone such as Whatsapp.
I don't do gaming but like photography and editing. I found the Duet could readily accept all inputs from digital cameras, through its single USB port, and digest all formats out to people, the cloud and physical storage.
In its native form, you could load in a basic Lightroom and another copy of Whatsapp but I also added Linux so I could also add apk android apps with more features that will even process raw images of different formats that windows machine would often reject unless I use used the right version of the editing program with the correct version of the camera. It seemed amazing.
To me, everything seems faster than on my old Dell Latitude, 2 core, from the startup to the browsing to the editing. I think Google are doing marvellous things, but maybe I am a bit of an old mug and other devices have evolved equally?

  • Answer - In the box you get a Lenovo adapter to connect those head phones to Duet USB c.

  • Be aware of the storage option, for what I know the 8gb version only come with 128gb storage, the amazone web stated as 8gb 256gb storage, I bought it anyway but fix me if Im wrong, thanks

Maybe Aus version different than US idk, officework seem to have the same spec tho, maybe there is 8gb 256gb

    • Does that mean free discount vouchers for the error?

      • Could be, base on amazon service quality. Only if they send you the wrong item, office work has the same spec so I dont think its wrong tho. Maybe Au model acttually has 256gb version

        • +1

JB Hifi and MWave also states 256gb so I'm relatively confident we are ok

          • @RayEarth2133: 8gb/256gb is definitely available I'm Australia I have one purchased from OW, but equally I've seen 128gb around for the same price so you definitely need to ship around and make sure to keep an eye on 256
