    Refurbs already?

    • +3

These are marked specifically as 'seconds', and Sony's seconds might as well be sold as brand new. Might be slightly carton damaged, or nothing at all based on multiple experiences. They are not refurbished.

    • +7

I was fooled last year with Sony XM4 refurbs. On first glance they seem like a great deal… Unitil I just didn't quite get why they didn't sound as great as I would have thought…

I grabbed a pair of my friends identical yet non-refurb headphones, and his sound was richer/fuller, almost as if these had some driver issue…

I tried to return them, but Sony completely ghosted me, went NO-CONTACT from day 1. I had to dispute with PayPal to get my refund…

These refurbs should be binned, it ruins the premium brand they built.

      • +4

        yikes, that sucks!

      • +1

        Really? Damn

Considering how popular these Sony refurb deals get I'm surprised

You think it was only yours that played up or…?

Seem to be lots of happy customers from previous refurbed XM4 deals

  • +1

These are pretty good for the price considering Sony's refurbs are like new…thats what most people say?

    • +5

I've bought the xm4s and some other pair years ago. They both work fine and were like new.

Some people have had bad experiences. Others make claims about earwax which I find hard to believe.

Maybe you're thinking of the WF models? They're the in-ears. Sony's naming scheme needs an overhaul IMO.

        • +2

Hahaha imagine earwax on the WHs! Ewww!

  • Worth upgrading from xm4’s?

    • +2

      I upgraded from XM3's
Sound is a little better but no major change
Features are nice, i use the dual connection
ANC is great, but was already good

      • Do you have any problem with the dual connection with a PC? Mine keeps switching to PC for no reason and doesnt switch back

      • Can this be used wired with a USB connection? My phone doesn't have a 3.5mm port

        • +1

It comes with a 3.5mm audio cable if you want to use it wired, but you'd need something like this or this to connect it to your phone.

        • USB adaptor/soundcard

    • +3

      I prefer the XM3 and 4s, the 5 isn't as comfy

    • +3

No way Jose, the 4s are better overall

    • +1

Definitely not worth the upgrade, the 4s are pretty much the pinnacle with a lot of people arguing the 5's are worse.

    • Not exactly but I did..
Sold xm4 for 270$ bought xm5 350$ (or at least price protected to that).

Just google the differences and see what's important to you.

  • +17

The XM4s are there too, which were preferred by my daughter
    $223.20 for Black: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285114035464
    $211.20 for Silver: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285114035480

    • Jumped in at this price - I like the fold up design for travelling, and this price point is my limit for something I probably won't use daily.

  • Mine says AU $419.00
Tried to apply both coupons at the checkout but it says This code can't be applied to your order

    • I am guessing you are not using an eBay Aust account?

      • Yes that was the case, ordered silver ones, thanks!

  • Apparently the black attracts a bunch of fingerprints. I got the silver and if it's as bad as others say, it's probably worth the extra $30.

  • +1

It was this price but for new not so long ago.

    • +3

That was a freak occurance tho

    • +3

      Any deal on time machine?

      • Nope, just put an alert on Ozbargain for post over x votes

  • Are these better than the recent Bose deal? Tho these are $100 more nearly.

    • if you dont have big ears or ear is not out so much, this is the best
(compare to the bose 700 and xm4)

      • I think i have big ears lol

  • Anyone think the bose comfort argument (IE Bose are more comfortable) holds water?

    Looking to upgrade from QC35s

edit: for XM4 I mean - 217 hard to beat

    • I think comfort is a personal preference.

I find my XM3's more comfortable than my father's QC45's, which just didn't feel right for me.

    • I've had my QC35 for years but felt the noise cancellation could be better. When the last XM5 deal came around I bought it.

I didn't read anyone's comments about comfort with the XM5 so I wasn't looking out for anything comfort-related, but the first day I used it I noticed my ears felt really warm and sweaty. I took them off and put the QC35 back on and it was immediately more comfortable and cooler. I've always worn the QC35 for hours on end and never noticed any discomfort.

The noise cancelling does sound better on the Sony though, so I'll probably just live with the discomfort or swap headphones when it gets too hot.

  • I bought my set during xmas special, very short summary:
    + sound is great
    + ergonomics are great
    + microphone no complains
    + sound isolation just wow
    HOWEVER
    - your ears sweating in them (mentioned in multiple reviews but they try to downplay this). its a big issue, in a warm temperature due to very tight rubber on the headphones your ears are sweating. think about construction hear protection headphones - material feels the same
    - when they are on your neck, for some reason they are not sitting as comfy (might be a personal thing) maybe because cups are on a bigger side

    hope this helps

    • xm 4 or 5?

        Read the thread title again.

        • +2

there are links to both in this deal so..

          • -4

@Duplicity: No. OP posted XM5 deals only.

            • @Cineaste: Yes, and in the commentary there are both links and discussion on XM4s - stop being obtuse

              • -4

@Duplicity: Those discussing XM4 have clearly communicated this. The above poster obviously is referring to XM5. Stop asking silly questions.

                • @Cineaste: Send him to the corner to think about what he's done!

                • @Cineaste: nice reply LOL obviously 'silly' yourself :)

          • +1

@Duplicity: Either of you are correct depending when you first saw the post. Check Post history, I initially created an XM5 post, mods added the XM4 links later.
Can we all have a group hug now? 😉

      …I'll add to the "HOWEVER"…
SBC, AAC, AND LDAC codecs only. No aptx. I went through everthing i own and nothing uses LDAC ( the only low latency codec it supports)

      • You won't find many LDAC capable devices outside Android phones, a couple handheld dacs, and the occasional person running Pipewire on Linux. (There's a 3rd party driver on windows, but it was very broken for me. I'll have to try again with the next version to see if they fixed my particular show-stopper.)

LDAC is also not a low latency codec.

        • 3rd party driver on windows

          what's the driver ?

      • Yeah the XM3's have APTX … Still rocking mine. Really annoying almost no way to get replacement OEM earpads though

Sucks they dropped from the XM4's

      • I have XM3 with LDAC. I found only Win10 doesn't support that but Android phones support it well. You need to enable LDAC from dev options or sony app

    • +1

ear pads are the biggest problem i have, they are smaller than the xm4, and atm the decent after market is only dokoni pads which cost about 170$ to AUS.

the stock pads are shallow, and very warm, feels like worse material than the xm4 as well. the bose 700 didn't have this problem as deeper ear cup design.

can confirm the neck carry problem too. compare to the bose and xm4, this is a clearly step back, only if they rotate the other way like xm4.

      • +1

"ear pads are the biggest problem i have, they are smaller than the xm4, and…

the stock pads are shallow, and very warm, feels like worse material than the xm4 as well"

Yep this is definitely a deal breaker for some. I repeatedly mentioned the shallow earpads in comments of XM5 deals last year, but didn't want to be "that guy" who kept commenting it so I stopped.

In my opinion XM5 and XM4 are not really in the same category even though their model names are similar. XM5 really are "pimped up" lifestyle headphones to compete with the Airpods Max image. In other words XM5 is more for casual use day to day and looking good as well, it has a stylish design and much improved microphones for phone calls and that's what you are paying extra for.

The XM3/XM4 have always been the commuter's best performer. In other words something that was designed with ANC only in mind, and it shows because it was the best at what it did. Similar kind of deal happened with QC35 and NC700, QC35 was definitely the comfort king with the best ANC and NC700 just made things fancy and more expensive with no real ANC improvement.

        • It sounds like the Xm5s were designed by people with marketing degrees, for the cool kids, rather than for music enthusiasts/audiophiles.

          • @RefusdClassification: "It sounds like the Xm5s were designed by people with marketing degrees,"

Yeah I mean most of the work was already done by the XM3/4 designers. They just had to tweak it for a different market. But yes I think they are targeting different consumers with the XM5.

            • @harshbdmmaster718: Yes bit more refined noise cancelling and slightly better natural sound quality, different ergonomics and finish.

Still nothing wrong with the XM4, very solid

  • These would have only been used for about 30 days, right? Wondering how much use the battery has had

  • Upgraded to these from Xm3s for Chrissy and I actually really like the new design in the hands it feels great to handle.

One big problem I have with it though… the dual connection between my mobile and PC is great when it works… however the few moments my mobile stops playing noise it switches back to PC for no reason, and stays on the PC and won't automagically switch back to phone for quite a while; ranging anywhere from 10seconds to minutes. (Often taking longer than shorter too)

    • +1

Likely a notification chime from the PC taking over

  • Bose 700 were brand new for $237 just couple of weeks ago and these are refurbished.

    • had both, sold the bose, way more ear pressure compare the 2 ANC

  • OOS, bit the bullet with XM4’s

    • same

  • Bought XM4 to give them a shot, simply to get USB C as micro usb on my QC35 gets annoying

  • Showing out of stock now - Black

  • +2

XM4 way better if available, XM5 was a flop imo.

  • Oos

  • Too slow OOS. I regret getting rid of my MX3d when I only recently found out they supported the Qualcomm aptX HD which the MX4 and MX5 no longer support.

I know there are other brands with support the Qualcomm aptX LL for low latency and the person I set them up for they were very happy. Not sure how many devices are supporting aptX HD and sone say it’s comparable to LDAC it’s just too many formats and as per usual ppl don’t want to pay the Qualcomm licensing fees. If you want aptX HD though you are spending sone serious dollars and I still think Sony is killing it in this area of the market though the XM5 have been expensive. I would have jumped on some returns though. Alas no aptX HD on the XM5 either.

  • Sony headphones are so much better than bose - you can't hear people on the train

  • Bought the x5, probably shoulda just saved $100 and gotten the x4

  • I got brand new XM5 for $350 from JB a couple weeks ago

    • was the deal advertised or they were just nice and gave you them at this price?

    • Do you happen to have a copy of the receipt to share, please?

    • That was one in a million, a price error that got honoured… salty that I missed it though

  • +2

    F*****CK I WAS WORKINGGHGGGIUJPOBHSDFKIJUBLUHSDFOLIB K DBNSFLV>

    • If I'm not a fan of my pair after a couple of wears I could pass them on? XM4 that is

  • Does anyone know which courier they use to deliver these? The tracking email doesn't seem to work?

    • Apparently DHL according to the eBay tracking, but mines not working either. Hopefully, it'll be trackable soon.

      • I contacted them and they sent me a link that's working.

        • Same here, I got the link the day after emailing them.

          • @padfoot07: I ended up getting an update via eBay message with a DHL tracking link saying it's out for delivery.

  • Opened the cardboard box and found mine in the filthiest outer packaging you can imagine, thank god the headphone itself was fine. Also found a ton of labels stuck on the box… They need to be mindful how they deal with the packaging.

  • Go my refurbs Sony WH-1000XM4, headset looks and smells brand new. Case the same.
Box looks average with huge orange sticker GDB4, whatever that means, manufacturing date is late 2020.
Seems to work fine, can't complain for 217 bucks. Happy customer :)
