Sometimes the same socket CPUs are cheap on AliExpress if you're wanting a better CPU or something with more cores/threads. Good way to build a budget server with these PCs.

    • +1

I bought an e5-2690 V4 for $135 from eBay local seller. Not worth risking what will sent from Ali Express and headache trying to return it.

      • Never had to return anything for an AliExpress refund. But yes local sellers are fine if the price is right. Just sometimes Ali sellers will clear them out dirt cheap or in an Ali sale.

        • Well, I have, and it's a pain. Considering most stuff takes 4-6 weeks to get here then if there's a problem you have to first return it to get a refund. That's a minimum 8-week turnaround. On smaller items, they don't care they just refund you and say bin it, but of anything of value, they want the item back.

      • For gaming or mostly productivity? Seems like a good middle ground for both

    • Is that with a Quadro though? Link isn't working for me on my phone for some reason.

      • +2

This is for the CPU itself (e.g. Xeon E5-1650 V3, Intel Xeon E5 2643 V4) and not the whole PC.

Searching for "fclga2011 3" on AliExpress will show compatible CPUs.

        • +1

Ah. I've read your comment properly now. You mean buy this deal, then you have the option of buying a more powerful CPU off AliExpress that fits this socket if you want to upgrade. :) Got it.

          • +1

            @salem: Yes that's correct.

    • Noob question but would this make much difference to performance with games? And if so, any recommendations on which cpu would offer the best bang for buck?

      Cheers

      • Nah this CPU is fine. It's more if you were wanting to do tasks where my cores/threads would be beneficial, like with a server or running VMs.

  • I got one of these a while back and can confirm that the build quality is really high, and that there is a 4X 2.5" RAID bay in the top. It works well for both CAD and light gaming. Arrived spotless. Very quiet and I love how working on it is tool-less. I got a cheap PCIE card from Amazon (~$10) and put a Gen 3 M.2 NVME in it. This would be a wonderful present if you know an engineering or graphic artist student.

    • +1

I am surprised you can hear anything.. over the top of those 4x2.5 raid bays.. the fans.. are really really noisy, a pair of 40mm..
First thing I did was to pull it out.. or disable the power of the bay…

      • I have one of these and my 2.5 bays are silent (got lucky I guess). To be fair they didn't advertise them on eBay with the 2.5in bays (and some of the later units didn't come with them). G

        • Was yours advised with an Optical Drive? instead

          • @Kelvin: Nope, I got a slim DVD drive in one machine, and just blank plate in the second. Same with some fibre card, was present in one machine but not the other. Although I noticed in some ads they have the drivebays in the eBay pictures, but not listed in contents. Either way I see that stuff as a bonus, plus its pretty easy to remove power to the fan anyway.

            • @BlinkyBill: The original listings had the DVD slimline drive in the picture and listed in the specs..
None of mine had them installed… they quickly editted their listing.. and they admitted fault agreed to send the drives, for me to retro fit..

thats when all the trouble started..

Received a single normal drive.. but never got the other two…

They then claimed.. the drives where never included… (by now.. 30 days post listing.. and returns.. all evidence of the orignal posting, had been removed by Ebay..) I know because I check the first time.. to confirm the missing optical drives.. and this was confirmed by them… (when their check the Ebay listings) as well..

In the end they agreed to a small refund which I never received..

Fascia was missing from one unit as well.. (which they never sent out, despite promising)..

      • Yes the fan to cool down 4 HDD is quite noisy but you can simply take off the fans. IMO no need to have those fans to reduce temperature of SATA SSD or connect to extra fan speeds with low-noise adaptors . The two 80mm case fans on the back is somehow annoying to me

      • After disconnecting the fans from drive bay, z640 runs very quietly.

      • This is the issue with buying any old PC.

The small fans wear over time and get noisy and the non standard pin headers make it very difficult to replace them.

    • Link to the Amazon PCIE adapter you bought please

Be really really careful, buying off this crowd..

Used to have no issues, buying bits off them the last 5 years..

Bought 6 of these machines, in total..
1 was dented… Then offered a small refund.. which I accepted, because I didn't want to ship the machine back to them.
2 were cosmetically pretty poor, deep scratchs but usuable..

3 were missing parts, which they acknowledged… and claimed to have sent out the parts missing..
    1 received one lot..

the other two, never arrived, despite receiving tracking advice..
Investigation by Auspost concluded, that the shipping labels, were created, but the parcel, was never received by Aust Post

Contracted them again… they admited second parcel(s) were never shipped.. and we had a discussion, on whether, the parts missing, where mean to be included… (given they now had no replacements availble)..
Eventally they offered a small refund to compensated (because they didn't have the mising parts), and agreed to ship one missing fascia..which they had in stock..

    I received tracking notice..

1 month later, no fascia / no small refund.. no further contact….

Wasted enough time dealing with these people.. never again..

Previously.. their refurbs, were good.. these machines, are in pretty bad shape.. compared to the preivous ones I've bought…of them..
I don't think these machines, have been checked properly at all before being shipped out..

Presumably.. thats why they are priced accordingly.. so cheap….

    • +2

      Good feedback, thanks.

    • +1

At least urs is not bios locked

    • +1

I'm really surprised. I have worked with them on a couple of orders and it has always been top notch.

    • Interested as to why you kept going back to them so many times given the repeated issues? 2 or 3 times sure, but 6?

      • +2

bought 3 machines first.. as one order

then bought another 3 machines as a second order .. when the specs.. where slightly better.. .

Had only opened one machine up, before I had made the second order… and at thats stage, they seems happy to rectify the issues..(1st machine had a missing part, but cosmestically fine)..

In the past, all the machines I had bought from them where perfectly fine… small scratches are expected…
but these machines, where terrible, at least 3 or the 6 were..

        • Good detail and explanation, thanks. I've only had one experience with them (an HP G3 SFF) and that was good but also good to know it can vary greatly.

    • +5

Yep I also had a bad experience with them on these machines.

I ordered one with a V4 CPU. And they knowingly sent me one with with a V3 CPU without any correspondence. When I queried them about the CPU downgrade they said yeah we ran out of V4. They offered me a $50 partial refund. I asked for more, since you can't buy a V4 for anything less than $100 more. They declined saying some random customer of theirs got one for $30 so $50 is it. I asked for evidence of this because I would have done the same, but none was provided. So it was pure BS.

I wasn't happy having to ship this back its a big heavy box to be lugging around. And it was the second (of a batch of 4 I bought) that had to be returned. The other had to be returned because of a glaringly obvious BIOS fault. But that return went well, but still a hassle. Don't they even test these? I also had to chase them up for the refund processing.

Anyway. I was disappointed with their take it or leave it approach and pathetic refund offers. It's a pita having to return these heavy boxes for things that shouldn't have even happened in the first place and only a 50% success rate.

    • +2

Yes they also knowingly sent me the wrong laptop, after editing the errors on their listing.
And they never answered my emails.

Fortunately, the Ebay returns process went smoothly, but annoying they wasted my time in the hope they could slip it past.

  • Does anybody know if i can run 3 pcie slots at 8x on this?

    • 2 PCIE X16, 1 PCIE X8, 1 PCIE X4, 1 PCIE X1 so yes you can ideally run 3 pcie slots at 8x on this

      • Sometimes the slot sizes don’t align to the bandwidth or electrical connections

  • +2

was going to get one but considering a rtx 3060 can be had around $300 with much better fps, add to a cheap haswell box without gpu on ebay and suddenly it doesnt seem as good of a deal

    • +1

I have this machine for gaming, and I agree with you. A few months ago this was a good option, but not now that new GPU prices have come down from orbit.

The GPU in this is very power hungry and is pretty loud when the going gets tough. I have 2 of these in SLI and that gets very hot. They are capable GPUs and the whole machine is pretty good. But there are better options for gaming now.

      • Was looking for a cheap 3060 myself but couldn’t get one within $300 range, so I ended up buying this, took the GPU and chucked it into my main rig of i7 4790 and then put my older RX570 into the workstation as a second gaming rig, hoping to reduce the overall energy usage that way 😭

still hoping to see more 3060 for $300, everyone’s still trying to sell it for $450ish

  • +2

Good price - I have been using this for 3 months as 1080p gaming and streaming PC. Highly recommend at this price. Any questions please ask me.

  • +1

Had to return mine. Graphics card faulty and frequently locked up with the only resolution being hard power off.

  • +1

I think they count on the fact, the machines, are so big and ehavey that most people people, will put up with whatever minor faults, occur with them.. because.. they are too heavy to repackage and easily ship back to them..

If I could have easily exchanged or refunded them.. I would have..
the amoutn of time and effort dealing with these people.. plus trying to repackaged them up isn't worth it..

  • +1

Reading all the negative comments mods should be banning these guys. Guess they dont care about the ozb community getting ripped off

  • +1

based on the experience of other ozbargainers, I don't think we should be supporting deals from this supplier until they make amends and change their behaviour.

    • Its still a very good deal.. but.. just the pain of dealing with them…

If you have plenty and time and patience… perhaps…!!

  • Hmm I am starting to get a bit worried now. I just bought a dell laptop as part of refurb ebay deal today. Wondering whether to cancel the order or keep it

    • Thanks for sharing the negative experiences. Bought a couple of these and been very happy with them aside from the noisy fan in one of them which seems to be common. Also bought other items. Have had a great experience so far. The shared negative experiences do seem worrisome.

    Howdy

This is turning into a bit of a PR disaster lol.

If any member has had any issue please send me a PM and I’ll be MORE than happy to look into it for you.

Whilst isn’t no excuses nov and Dec were some of our biggest months on record also with new staff onboarding.

We are not a small business, so having it fail this bad from picking teams to production teams to dispatch teams to customer service teams isn’t good enough. Especially when there are so many people in that chain of custody.

The ozbargin community has been huge to us over the years, so much so I’d be shocked if a member hasn’t bought something from us. Nothing makes me feel more warm and fuzzy than reading the positive experience people have.

So again if you haven’t received a positive resolution please let me know.

    • You have PM…

      • Calmago, has replied to me and we have worked out an acceptable solution

Its nice to have a rep here that can sort things out when things do go completely like how they are meant to..

  • Hmmmm, I bought two of the 32" Philips monitors (one second hand and one new) and they were delivered reasonably quickly and packed really well. If I was in the market for a cheap server would jump at this. Quite surprised at the issues people seem to have raised, hopefully it was because it was busy and new staff like Calmago said, and the issues won't be ongoing.

    • +1

I've bought plenty of stuff off them in the past.. with no issues.. until now..

I have though we had come to an amicable resolution… in the end they never followed through with it..

With the bigger items.. I think, they rely on people not wanting to return them.. because of the huge inconvience. of trying to repack and ship the machine back to them..

I think they on prey on fact, here is your token refund amount or you can ship it back to us..

Three of the machine out of the 6, I would have never purchased.. if I had seen the condition they were in..

      • I have your PM which I will look into.

However stating that we prey on people is a bit much.

Offering partial refunds is sometimes the best outcome for minor issues or discrepancies. As most people still want the equipment in the first place. We also provide free return shipping labels for devices to be sent back to us to be exchanged or refunded. Not only that if the items are purchased through any of the market places we are required to follow their returns processes as well.

        • +2

I was pretty told to take the partial refund or return it..

Taking time of work and some how getting something so large back to the post office.. was not going to happen with my bad back as such..

ideally, the machines should be in appropriate condition and description and condition to begin with and checked.. which they obviously weren't.. or your quality control. is really bad..

After coming forward with a reasonable solution twice.. which involved signficant compromises on my part..
your company failed to come through with their agreed solution..

I have never been treated this badly by any local company I have purchased from..

Sending out tracking advice… with no parcel…
waited 3 weeks.. then got Auspost involved.. and then their investigation determined the parcel was never sent.

Got back to your company.. who admitted, it was probably never sent either.. because they didn't have any of the parts on hand..

          there's a lot more to it. …

$30 a machine I was offered off.. x2 plus the missing fascia.. which I reluctantly agreed to…

even then… you company never came through…

A lot of wasted time and effort…

Not worth chasing up anymore …

I tried through Ebay.. and messaging….

I have PM you, because genuinely seem concern about the issues..
and I am clearly not the only one with problem with purchasing from your company…

I am not expecting any further resolution in this..

I got dealt the bad apple this time.. and have accepted this as a clear lesson,

I gave your company multiple chances to rectify the issue..

though I am feel I am clearly in the right.. the time and effort to take this further wasn't worth it. to excise a satisfactory outcome.

          • @Kelvin: Calmago, has replied to me and we have worked out an acceptable solution

Its nice to have a rep here that can sort things out when things do go completely like how they are meant to.

I await the solution to be completed… and will feedback here.. if there are any further issues.

          • -1

@Kelvin: You’re buying bottom of the barrel systems on eBay and expecting first class treatment? You buy these from HP/Dell for $5k and they don’t even provide what it seems you’re after.

You can always return to eBay for full refund if not satisfied, and if you’re unable to post for medical reasons finding a courier or friend to help is your own responsibility.

        • Similar story to me.

The first machine should never have been let out the door. It had a BIOS fault message which stopped boot waiting for a keypress, every single time the machine was rebooted. The fault could not be remedied, it was something to do with permanently corrupted flash memory. I offered a couple of solutions - send me a new mobo, or give me a partial discount off a replacement machine and I keep this one for parts, but no. I had to make time to lug that 20kg box to my local post office with my bad back.

Second machine should never have left the building. They shipped the wrong CPU, changed the eBay description, and not a peep out of them until I queried them. They KNOWINGLY shipped it with the cheaper spec V3 when it was supposed to be V4. The V4 CPU was the only reason I bought this whole machine. Their pathetic offer of $50 partial refund, saying (with no evidence) other customers had bought 1650V4 CPUs for $30 was a slap in the face. I've been looking for a 1650V4 for the best part of a year and $130 was the going rate, not $30. I was pissed at having to lug another 20kg box to my post office.

A lot of wasted time and effort.

      • Fair enough, I'd be pretty annoyed too if something was agreed and not followed through. Hopefully something good comes of it now it's been raised here.

  • +2

I have to say I ordered two of these computers at two separate times from ACT and both are in pretty amazingly clean condition.
I also bought the new 32" Phillips screen and it arrived quickly but I haven't had a chance to unbox it yat.

But My experience with ACT has been fantastic and they have responded to any queries or feedback very quickly.

Hopefully they will address the negative experiences that some have had fingers crossed.

    • Great to hear

  • Would I need to repaste the CPU on one of these?

    • Why would you need to do that?

      • If the CPU paste dries out, your thermal conduction reduces and you might see overheating issues. Happened to me recently on my day to day desktop that I bought assembled, new, some years back. With these models being old refurbs, the chance of dried paste is higher, unless as part of the refurb they're redoing the paste.

        • These machines were several thousand dollars new. They use the best paste on these. Im not sure how long it lasts, but I imagine its longer than crap paste.

  • +1

Ordered one. Thanks OP. Seems like a great deal and despite a couple of bad experiences, seems like plenty of good ones, as well as a genuine interest in making amends and looking after their customers

  • Is it correct that this only has two 3.5 sleds?

  • @Calmago does this server support a second processor? Thinking about putting another cheap secondhand Xeon in it to get more cores.

    • +1

Yes but you need to buy a daughter card, and they are very expensive. You also lose one PCIe slot.

And the CPUs need to be identical, and be E5-26xxV3/4, the E5-16xxV3/4 don't do dual CPU.

      • Ohh, that sucks. I thought an extra card might be required, but didn't realise the CPUs needed to be identical. Cheers.

  • Did anyone that bought one of these (in Sydney) get the smaller heatsink by any chance that would like to swap for the larger one? I have a CPU riser coming and it's not compatible with the larger heatsink.

  • I received my unit on monday, everything worked straight out box, infact even though it is refurbished it looks almost brand new. Thoroughly Impressed with the product and the service. This is the second time I have ordered from them and both times it has been Flawless.

  • I got mine Monday too, works great and finally have what is probably the minimum specs to play things on the Oculus Quest 2! I tested The Forrest and it ran great and was far more horrifying in VR.

  • Received my unit over a week ago and I am very happy overall. The only gripe is the graphic card getting really hot while the fan don't rump the speed(maybe windows related issue). It is probably overdue for repasting and fan curve tweak.

I will be upgrading the DVD bay and 2x 5.25 bays, so if anyone is interested, I can sell my Icy DOCK 1x5.25-4x2.5. Located in South East Melbourne.
