While one-way flights can be had for as low as $314 to Europe, sometimes you want a bit more in an airline / fewer stopovers.

With a 4-star Skytrax rating, this is a solid airline to be flying to Europe with, and it's generally only one stop enroute!

All flights include checked luggage, food and entertainment.

I've featured the cheapest Vietnam Airlines dates below, but when you click them there may be cheaper on other airlines (Eg Scoot) - you can use the filters on the left to hide those, or fly with them of course :)

Don't forget to look at the discounted hotels - up to 60% off in Paris, as well as up to 60% off in London!

Whilst the price is right I think you probably should mention the possibility of very long layovers in Vietnam (visa required to leave the airport) and the potential Visa requirements for the domestic flight between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi which connects the two longer legs on certain routings.

    • You're absolutely right.

    • I fell victim to this scam about a decade ago.
I'd bought a single entry visa for a stay in Vietnam on the way back Europe.
The visa was used for the transfer from HCM to Hanoi, but I didn't realise.

Upon return, I effectively had to bribe my way into the country. Some $200 USD iirc.
I was escorted by an immigration officer to an ATM outside the airport.

I don't think I've ever been more scared in my life.

      • +7

By scam, do you mean just were unaware of the requirements?

        • -1

          Yes sir.

But I do think it's a bit dodgy that you have to apply and pay for an entry visa when you're simply transferring to another flight.

Looks to be 35 hours on return leg from Paris

    Pho real.

      They're pho dac biet deals.

Anyone thinking about London Virgin Atlantic have really good pricing for almost every date I have checked so far (May / June / July / August).

Example: $1340 SYD-LAX-LHR RTN with Delta / Virgin Atlantic.

Also, In & Out is a short walk from the terminal at LAX, which is a bonus of flying the southern cross route

    • +2

      33-35 hr trip though.

      • -1

It will always be ~25hrs one way and ~35hrs back (via the states) with VS. Was the same before Covid, but VA instead of Delta. OPs deal is 52hrs and 35hrs.

Also, those are the times for SYD. Try another airport as the times vary.

    • Looks to be pretty cheap just to fly to usa lol via this ticket then just dont go to the UK

      • +9

Don’t do this as your return trip will become invalid if you skip a leg.

        • Buy two one way tickets, if the the price is right?

          • @Sharp: One-way tickets are generally far more expensive than return tickets, but yes, you could.

    • +8

Worth advising people to be careful looking at cheapest rates on Skyscanner as there’s tons of dodgy third parties on there like “Bravofly” for the $1340 example above which must be avoided. It’s worth paying extra for reputable providers and/or preferably direct with airline.

Also LAX is an absolute PITA to transit. Long passport queues and you have to collect luggage and re-checkin to next flight. 2 hour stopover is not enough.

In & Out is a pretty good burger but it’s really not mind blowingly special at all.

      • -1

I'm not sure how long ago you were there, but it somewhat streamlined in my experience. Customs are still the worse by far (and the longest), but bag pickup was ~20m after that and bag drop off was another 50m. I normally transit around 20th Dec and it is busy, but a good experience imo compared to LHR. TSA are rude as f, but I've never waited more than 10min to get through.

My worst experience was a 3hrs stop and I was detained in LAX (they could read my prints), but even that was only 90 min gate to gate early evening.

        • +2

Yep - many reports that LAX has improved drastically in very recent times

        • +2

Quite literally a week ago. Although several times a year generally do the SYD-LAX-(US city for few days)-LHR route on Delta. While appreciate it’s peak holidays, it was the same in Sept too. Depends on luck on how many flights land same time etc I suppose.

TSA haven’t found to be an issue but passport control process is atrocious. Took over 2 hours and missed connecting flight. Bags do come out pretty quick compared to Heathrow’s inefficient everything though.

          • @Hybroid: I have a return flight to London via the Delta / Virgin Atlantic LAX route. Do you know if I need to go through customs/ bag collection on my return journey?

I have not been able to find a definitive answer. The flight got rescheduled down to a 2 hour and 5 minute wait between flights at LAX. As indicated above and same for my own trip, it is all booked under the one ticket so the responsibility is with Virgin Atlantic here.

            • +2

@Elly18: Do you transit anywhere else in USA or is it strictly SYD-LAX-LHR and back?

If so, I believe you should be fine and not need to leave airport and recheck in with bags.

Delta flight lands LAX gate 36 and then your next one leaves gate 37A which is basically across the hall.

Should be fine but do double check at original checkin counter at both Sydney and Heathrow (check at both!).

Safe travels! There’s free basic Wifi for messaging for everyone on the flights and if you know anyone’s T-mobile number then get free full internet on the flight too. Don’t pay for it, PM me and will give you mine to use.

      • +1

How is Bravofly a dodgy third party? I just returned from a trip and bought cheap flights from them. Thanks to Bravely I saved heaps.

      • Is there a way to filter those out on Skyscanner? Fitting the searching phase?

      • You have a real point there to consider.

  • -5

Indeed, as seems usual with these so-called deals.

With often long waiting times between flights.

Agree, there is no question: include waiting times or any other negatives to avoid semblance of click bait too.

    • +7

If you want flights that are 24-25hrs then you'll pay a premium as many airlines don't have connection waiting on arrival. I'd say Etihad would be the cheapest / quickest flight, otherwise SIA, Qantas, Emirates etc. You get cheaper prices because it's not as convenient, hence to entice

      • +2

And cheaper does not mean better.

        • I never stated it does. I stated 24hr flight are at a premium. SIA charges $1700-2000 on the low end, Qantas is normally $2-3k. Etihad is the only one I stated was cheap out of the lot and although you don't get a premium service anymore, its value for money if you want to be there ASAP.

Delta/VS are 24hrs/36hrs at $1300 and many people would rather save the $700 and grab a hotel or relax and take a few hours extra coming back. This is very true for groups (families) as it adds up quickly.

          • +3

@Froot Loops: As mentioned it makes no sense whatsoever.

And the better the deal the shorter it is going to last. Which can disappear at any time.

Of course in this instance and other deals presented by this third party a long wait of multiple hours — or up to a day is not preferable and be revealed wherever possible before click here too.

Because as others have mentioned as well it is best "worth" spending time to search for alternative flights other than these so-called deals.

And, if significantly are cheaper fares is it worth it to ultimately assuage the extended inconvenience or enormous pain in the butt otherwise. Though one man's fish is another man's poison.

            • @[Deactivated]: Again, I didn't suggest otherwise. I in fact put an alternative to the OPs deal on this post as another option because shopping around is important. I openly encourage people to look around and buy the product that suits them. I also fly to Europe often and fly on many airlines as I always research what is best for me at the time.

As stated, cheaper flights are generally longer flights and flights that are short (24hrs in length) are generally expensive. The OP posted a deal that there are better alternatives to (i.e. the Delta/VS pricing I posted above at $1300 with significantly shorter flight times), but if you want to fly with Qantas to London stopping for refueling in Singapore (24hrs one way and 25hrs return), the tickets start at ~$2500 and most people will be lucky to get change out of $3K.

$3k vs $1.3k and 10 difference in total is suitable for people that want to save money as most people on this site would not pay an extra $1800 to save 10hrs. Flight prices also change all the time and some of the cheapest flights I have purchased have been brought the week before flying out. These deals will come and go and vary per airline, as airlines set the costs of the ticket. Agents can bundle products and generally offer a discount to what the consumer would pay.

Please stop claiming that I am stating this and that, when I am clearly doing the opposite.

As for a day waits, that would be up to the person travelling, but the VS/Delta Alternative I suggested was 10hrs longer over all flights, which is a good amount of time to get a cheap hotel and adjust your body clock. I also disagree cheaper tickets = "extended inconvenience or enormous pain in the butt". I have paid as little as $1100-1300 on Etihad, which is 24hrs and 26hrs on the return. I have also paid $900 and have 1 long stopover of 10hrs, which I used the saving to get a hotel and was still ~$500 better off.

@[Deactivated]: I corrected your statement to better reflect reality. Just because its cheap, doesn't make it a crappy deal. I do agree with your statement to look around though.

@Froot Loops: But there is no deal feel here worth it, as described.

Just flew Vietnam to Europe. Premium Economy on the way there / Economy on the way back with two little children.

To Europe: Fast check in through priority lane, good stopover time, seating was spacious and service was alright. Family was seated separately, despite previous reservation / calls to the airline.

Return flight: Check in took 1h30min waiting in regular line and at the last moment they tried to take our foldable stroller away at the gate and check it all the way through because the flight was very full.

Got to Ho Chi Minh for our 14 hour stopover and after 3 hours they were able to find our stroller which they initially said was lost. 3 hours in the sleeping pods in the airport were a waste of money. Airport is very small and we found a quiet corner to relax, putting two benches together. After reading about a lot of food poisoning from airport food, seeing not a single person washed their hands in the bathroom (incl. ppl. working in hospitality) and noticing the high prices we had some coffee and fries only.

Boarded our last flight and 2 hours before landing one of us got very sick with gastro and ended up in hospital back in OZ. Staff on the plane didn’t help much and wished us the best - were mostly dismissive. Sydney airport medical was chaotic and I thought they’d be better organised considering how many people travel through there (quarantine staff not knowing if the airport med centre is open, saying it’s open when it wasn’t). Have to rely on 000 in the end who did a great job, both NSW ambulance staff and staff at both hospitals we went to.

Had a bassinet on every flight and my entertainment system was broken on ever flight. Both ways had to go through another scan / security check in transit.

Overall the price ($5200 for family of 4 over Xmas) was good, but not sure if I’d fly with them again. Especially with children we decided to travel less often but pay more for convenience / upgrades instead.

      Helpful insights. Thanks.

    • Thanks.
When did you book the tickets?

      • +1

October this year, about 2 months before departure. Prices went up and down until then, but only increased from about mid October

        • +1

          thanks

  • When trying to book on the Vietnam Airlines website I get the following warning:

Vietnam Transit Visa is required for itineraries:
    - between Sydney/Melbourne and other international destination transit via Hanoi.

Anyone flown via Hanoi before can confirm if a visa is needed? I'm not leaving the airport.

    https://imgur.com/a/vMmlGU8

    • +2

We flew / stopped over via Hanoi on the way over, you can disregard that message. You just stay in the terminal and transit area. Ensure that you don’t have a Hand - Ho Chi Minh domestic flight in your itinerary though.

      • Thank you! Really appreciate it.

      • Thanks for confirming this, was planning to fly with Vietnam Airlines to Japan from Sydney via Hanoi, saw that same visa message and was worried that I needed one.

Posted this same question on Whirlpool and someone did say that message on the website may be inaccurate now.

        • Yeah we weee worried and called up Vietnam Airlines. They clarified this only applies if your itinerary includes a domestic flight (some do).

  • Does anyone know how to do a search for return flights with stopover that last for more than 24hrs? I want to do something that has like a few days layover. Do I just search for one way tickets instead?

    • Put the length of flight sorting into longest -> shortest. And probably one stop (or two depending on your destination) to avoid the 5 stop flights

    • +1

      Found calling the airline direct.

    • The catch. As @dtc stated try to search for the longer durations (i.e. 50hrs flight rather than 30hrs flight), otherwise it can be a very expensive process. I tried to add an extra 24hrs on a stopover a few years ago and they stated it's like splitting the ticket and they wanted an extra $1k.

The only options I can think of:

      • Talk to the airline, but they will likely charge premium fees
      • Book via a travel agent or search skyscanner and look at the "around the world fare" (some airlines now call this a multi-fare).
      • I also remember pre-covid that Etihad did a deal that you could stay there for 3 nights on them, but you needed to book direct. I looked into this, but it works out to be a lot more expensive than using an agent at the time (check airlines webpage to see if they have any promos, but likely you would need to book direct).
      • Lastly, you could split tickets (example if you want to go Sydney-Singapore-London, you could buy 2 return tickets ticket 1: Syd-Sing, ticket 2: Sing-Lon. This can work out to only be a little extra, but you need to be 100% on lining your times up, visa enquires and insurance. I would avoid this if you don't fly often and are familiar with how this would work.

      I hope this made sense.

    • You can book a multi-city ticket and they can be sometimes even cheaper.

      So you book for example:-

      SYD - LAX — 9th Jan
      LAX - LHR — 10th Jan
      LHR - SYD — 14th Jan

  • Airlines are helpful, and can be most reliable if not more contacting direct when needed.

  • I know someone in Europe wants to come to Australia, how I set alerts for one way/return deals?

  • +1

Has the flight being removed? I can no longer see it.

  • +2

The deal with Vietnam air could work out very well if you consider visiting Vietnam as part of the trip, here is my itinerary coming this Ester.

Sydney to Hanoi: stopover for 9 days in Hanoi, enough to sample the northern part of Vietnam (Ha Giang, Sapa). You probably can do 2, 4 or 7 days as well if you only do Hanoi, Ha Long Bay etc. You need to get a visa to Vietnam for some 50 dollars I think.

Hanoi to Paris: spend 2 weeks in France

Paris to Melbourne, 15 hour transit in Ho Chi Minh City. We plan to get out of the airport, do a city tour in the morning and have a long lunch, the spend the afternoon in spa, massage, hair styling etc before flying back.

All up $1450 each, which I consider excellent price for school holiday and Ester time, even for pre-Covid time.

    • This is exactly what I’d like to do! It’s nice seeing someone else realise the opportunity for two continents at this price. Earlier in the post there’s a comment that mentions of a $200 visa?

Surely that can’t be right. What do you have to do in terms of visas for your stopover?

      Thanks

      • There are many website claiming to apply for the visa on arrival but they are all middle men who charge a fee for their service. But to my knowledge this is the official website of the Immigration department for e-visa application.

        https://www.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/

The fee is US$ 25 for 1-month and 50 for 3-month, respectively. Make sure you pick the option of multiple entry.

  • Can you find those for only 1 stopover? Multiple stopovers greatly increase chance of cancellations due to short staffing from covid (limited airline staff overseas), when one leg is cancelled the rest is also cancelled.

  • -5

Andrew Tate would not approve of these flights except Thailand.

  • Deals over right? I can no longer
see VNA as a flight option SYD-London
