Hi All,

Just came back from Tesla in Chadstone. The Model Y has a $3000+. price drop. Just started today at lunch time.
Went for a test driver and when I came back, the sales guy said he just received an email confirming a price drop on the Model Y.
Being a true OZBARGAIN guy, I bought one. Took all of 5 mins to order. 2 - 4 month deliver time.
If anyone thinking of getting one, now is a good time before they have massive back orders I guess.

NT $73570
QLD $72856

Have had Model Y since September '22. My thoughts of the car:

    Pros:
    - great sound system
    - crazy fast acceleration, even with the RWD version
    - autopilot is great on the motorways. Significantly reduces fatigue on long drives
    - can air-condition the car in advance for hot days
    - can add partner as a driver. Can see where the car is in real time
    - massive amount of storage room, frunk, boot, under boot
    - Supercharger network very convenient for road trips
    - sentry mode is great to check up on the car, and for the inbuilt dashcam
    - monthly software updates means new features being added all the time
    - location of car is always visible in app
    - included roadside assistance is pretty good (used once when a tyre blew)

    Cons:
    - all glass roof can make the cabin very hot, no way to close. Currently have a sun shade on permanently
    - turning circle is pretty massive. Sometimes feels like moving a bus
    - no HUD or monitor in front, but you can get used to it
    - some static noise from time to time near the driver seat (doesn't happen all the time)
    - rare, but do sometimes get phantom braking (not too scary once you're used to it)
    - no blind spot monitoring light on side mirrors
    - no 360 camera, no vehicle to load

    • Sounds great, Can't wait till our one arrives. Hopefully not too long of a wait.

      • When did you order? I ordered in Aug 2022, estimate is Feb-May.

    • +1

      Thanks mate.

I had concerns about Tesla removing proximity sensors and was told it's the case for US but not for AU stocks, at least for now.

With blind spot monitoring light, I thought when you turn the blind spot camera turns on?

      • Cameras turn on when you indicate using the blinkers. Also while you’re driving you’ll see vehicles around you on the screen. Takes a little getting used to when you’re used to having a blind spot monitor built into the side mirrors.

    • +2

thanks for sharing, no surprises here which is good.

It really needs a HUD, Sunshade, and Blindspot indicator on the mirror at the very least

maybe lidar/radar should have remained but not sure about real life impact yet, just can't see how they can make this work without it…my mazda has radar and works great!

      • i came from a 2021 cx5 gt, you'll get used to not having the HUD and blindspot indicator.
i have the sunshade as well for my model Y, there's been mixed reviews on the heat with some saying you do / don't but it's based on your driving preferences and you can always get one from tessories or somewhere like that once you get your car should you need one.

        • +2

I test drove a modely y in october in melbourne and it was too hot despite the aircon on, you can feel the heat on your head especially if the hair is thinning… it's the radiation/heat not so much the temparature and i also felt the seat material was sticky/made me sweaty

    • I've read on whirlpool some people have different tinting on model 3 roof glass, some say it's not too hot. I'm guessing model Y could be tinted then to fix the roof heat?

      • …kind of

What happens when you tint the roof is the heat won't make it through the glass to the seats etc. So they will feel slightly more comfortable.

However, what the tint is doing is reflecting the heat back onto the glass. The glass gets very hot and radiates heat. Depending on how sensitive you are, you might find this uncomfortable.

    • +2

Why is the turning circle so large compared to other similar sized cars?

    • +3

He has a trac record of almost always being wrong when it comes to Tesla.

The order fee increased by $50
      Delivery fee increased by $25
FBT limit is almost $84k, not $69k.

He's normally such a detailed orientated person which is why I enjoy is non-Tesla content, but when it comes to Tesla must have hidden bias. Like how can he always be so wrong.

      • I guess he makes mistakes like the rest of us?

        • +1

Wasn't my point, he's detail oriented, regularly calling out others, "details matter" is his catch phrase.
Long track record of bagging out Tesla and being continually wrong. Like a few mistakes we get it, but he's got a strong track record of being continually wrong.
Looking back, his business model is from commissions of new-car sales, to which Tesla do not participate. His mate does Finance leasing (which are booming with the EV incentives), so he may start promoting Tesla's soon…

  • -1

There's been an increase in fees on these though.
Ordering fee up from $50 to $400.
Delivery fee up from $25 to $1400.

Factor in too the price hikes on most of these last year, Tesla are probably still making more on each model when compared to the original RRP.

Good marketing. None of the idiot media are reporting this.

Still, you can't beat that deal for the Model 3 on novated lease for those it suits, especially loan buyers.

    • Someone's been watching AutoExpert on YT

      • Correct.

    • Order fee was 350 no? Now 400. I thought it was an error in your source (AE) but I never followed Tesla fees from a few years ago (in case the 50 bux is from 2019)

    • +3

      More wrong information

The order fee was $350 and is now $400

Delivery was $1375 and is now $1400

      'AutoExpert' wrong once again…..

      • You're correct. Cadogan misread the information of 'increased BY' as increased from. Very poor, I agree.

In fact he edited the video as a result.

    • +3

AutoExpert is consistently wrong on Tesla.
Given his primary business model, relies on kickbacks from vehicle manufacturers, not surprising he has some negative bias towards Tesla.
Although he some of his recent clips, seems to be attempting to play a straight bat.

  • +1

Personal choice … Very bland interior and exterior. Good on the technology, though.

    • +2

One brand\car can't be for everyone. I like the BYD for short trips, as a good daily driver, great if you just want an EV drivetrain without the changed experience. Tesla on the other hand, you need to be open for a mind shift in experience, suits me for long trips, unparalleled safety.

EVs are not suitable for many and shouldn't pretend they are suitable for all. Would say though 80% of people should have a decent quality of life improvement switching to an EV.

    • +1

I don't have one, but have rented and the interior starts to grow on you.
Everyone should sit in a Model Y at-least once, the glass roof blows you away, due to the minimalist nature of the interior there is so much frigging space.
In Australia summer, the glass roof isn't that bad as it's tinted. If I did own one though, would consider a darker tint (looks amazing) or just use a shade on the few really hot days we have.
Car pre-cools when it gets to hot (even when you're not in-side), returning to a cool car after a day at the beach was great!!
Range anxiety was less than my Mazda 3, as it was accurate. My Mazda often says 40km left, then watching it tank before your eyes.

All of your comments are Tesla hate and have added nothing to the discussion. I guess you're just the usual Australian Toyota waffler… Neg votes explain the rest.

  • +2

Why so many comments on a seemingly ordinary car deal?

    • +1

Lo… it's Tesla. People are either passionate supporters or detractors, not too many people with a balanced mindset.
Q: How do you know if someone drives a Tesla?
      A: They will tell you.

In their defense I rented one from Hertz (I needed a rental, so was happy to pay the uplift), and was absolutely blown away by the experience, as was my Wife and kids. Actually expected the wife to hate it, she hates anything electronic. I can see it won't be for everyone, and that is just fine. Imagine how boring it would be if we all drove the same cars.

While EVs may be the future, going to be quite some time before they replace ALL vehicles, especially those towing on long distances.

    • I'd say any price drop on a new car, let alone an EV, is a bonus these days.

  • -2

    @JackFrost
I didn't make the Norway website (https://www.teslahungerstrike.com/) where they highlight all the issues with Tesla Cars from the country that has the most Tesla cars per capita.

How is posting this site not contributing to the discussion on Tosla's by letting prospective buyers know about manufacturing issues prior to purchase?

    bargain
    /ˈbɑːɡ(ɪ)n/

    noun

    1. an agreement between two or more people or groups as to what each will do for the other.
"bargains between political parties supporting the government"

    2. a thing bought or offered for sale much more cheaply than is usual or expected.
"the Tesla was a real bargain" said no one ever

  • +1

    Performance model or go home.

  • +1

Thanks, I ordered one. My order was made on Friday before the price drop, but Tesla honoured the new price for existing orders. Good on them.

  • +2

Someone help me understand how EV prices are justifiable atm, when paying ~$73k, I'm driving aruond 15k kms yearly. Now that would equate the monthly savings of ~$2k-3k (assuming the power prices don't go up, not taking home solar/batts into consideration) taken from an EV saving calc. This would take about 25 years to really break even, although there is no guarantee the batteries are gonna last that long without a replacement after a decade. Is there a real point in buying EV considering the costs atm or its only for the affluent?

    • +1

subsidies, EV subsidy and FBT exemption. for those on higher income it is a big incentive

      • What kind of higher incomes and how do these subsidies work? Are you suggesting drs/dentists who take home 200k-300k at min.

        • best to run the calculations for your scenario. I would think 120plus

    • +2

Id wait a year or 2 for cheaper, and even better quality EV's to hit the market. 73k for a tesla 3 is insane especially with all the issues around. Even if you still like Tesla they should come down in price once the competition catches up

      • -1

model 3 is actually 63k inc gov ev rebate(nsw anyway).

    • +1

how much is a ICE car with similar acceleration and car options?

    • assuming the power prices don't go up

      Guarantee they will.

not taking home solar/batts into consideration

Solar makes sense but a 6kw solar system does max 40kwh a day in summer (Mel), winter probably 20kwh a day. That is if you keep it plugged in all day.

$10k for a 10kwh battery which will probably only give your car 7kwh.

      Economics are great here.

Government not putting in big batteries or having good policy around energy usage (peak is really like 7am - 10am, 4pm - 11pm rest should be off peak to get people to soak up the excess energy.

  • I heard a snippet of Dr Karl on RN saying that lithium batteries are better than new after being recycled, or they can be after some far distant development. Don't know which. What's the story?

    Aha

Recycled cathode materials enabled superior performance for lithium-ion batteries

    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S254243512…

    Key word, "potentially".

  • Is there a use case in Australia where AWD is needed over RWD? 30k price difference. Don't think any of the EVs on the market this year are the off-road types where AWD would be helpful in getting out of a muddy ditch, etc.

    • Snow? No need for chains plus if driver was reckless/made a mistake, AWD system would be an added layer of protection?

      • Yeah we don't have snow here unlike you live in tassie

      • Not in the show with those tires.

  • Has anyone actually figured out how to get the government rebate or is this automatic?

I'm reading this here and seems like a lot of gobbledegook.

  • +3

Also let's not forget that this not really a price decrease. Tesla raised their prices shortly after the model launch. So we're back to starting price.

  • +3

Still expensive, need a long range model Y may be around 72k would be a good deal

    • +1

agreed, also no word from long range in oz for model y? Why?

      • If already selling like hot cakes why offer another option to complicate things.

        • It doesn't complicate things but its a common variant.

          • @pogichinoy: You obviously have no idea about business then.

How do you explain products that are available overseas as a variant but never gets here?

            • @netjock: LOL you have no idea.

Manufacturers base their offerings on whether the market responds well to previous similar products, ala Model 3 long range must've done well enough to warrant a Model Y long range.

It's also only 3 variants to choose from. That's not a lot by any means.

              Get educated.

              • @pogichinoy:

Manufacturers base their offerings on whether the market responds well to previous similar products

Answered your own question. Obviously the Y LR doesn't sell well enough to make it here so that is why there is only 2 variants.

                Genius!

Obviously you should write to Elon Musk because you know better.

                • @netjock: Tesla is experiencing recent production issues. They've suspended Model 3 long range in the US due to the growing waiting list. But LR is still available on the Model 3 and Y in Asian countries like HK.

Telsa is most likely suffering from supply chain issues which is why it is yet to officially be offered in Australia.

But keep tooting your horn having difficulty with 3 complicated variants.

                  ^_^

                  • @pogichinoy: Has lack of supply or product on the drawing board ever stopped Tesla taking deposits. Model 3 and Cybertruck is two examples. Cybertruck might not get to Australia but they have taken deposits.

                    Keep tooting your horn!?

                    • @netjock: It has now. Tesla in the US have stopped taking orders (including deposits) for the Model 3 LR.

                      It's a figure of speech.

I am 100% in favour of beta testing self driving by private companies, using public roads, being more regulated and openly disclosed and audited. I've said it before on another thread and I'm far from a musk fan boy.

Still doesn't make your idiotic "tosla" ev hate any less idiotic or childish though.
Cars crash, and ones driven by wet wear behind the wheel do it also. The same wet wear that's meant to be monitoring cars currently using autonomous assistance.

And that didn't ban it, just said it needs to be more clearly named as it is no way fully autonomous driving. Did you even read the article?…it's a 'fake advertising' /misleading marketing story. (Though I wouldn't be against any actual bans while proper legislation and criteria are brought into place. )

  • If I bought the model Y last year does this mean i still qualify for the $3k in VIC?
Assuming i get the vehicle sometime May delivered.
Does the new price even qualify as it needs to be less than $68,740.

    Incentives & Exemptions
From 2 May 2021, the VIC Government will offer a ZEV Subsidy of $3,000 on new zero emissions vehicles with a Vehicle Subtotal (dutiable value) of less than $68,740 (including GST). The subsidy is limited to 4,000 registrations in Victoria at this amount. A further 16,000 incentives will then be made available, however details for this stage of the scheme are yet to be confirmed.

Additionally, electric vehicles are exempt from the “luxury vehicle” rate of stamp duty, paying a flat rate of $8.40 per $200 of market value. All electric vehicles also receive a $100 annual discount on vehicle registration.

    Am I eligible?

For eligible vehicles purchased from 2 May 2021, the ZEV Subsidy is available to Victorian residents and businesses with premises in Victoria. Subsidies are limited to one per individual person and two per business.

How can I receive the subsidy?

The subsidy will be deducted from the total Drive Away Price on the final tax invoice. If eligibility is unable to be confirmed, any quotations or invoices inclusive of the subsidy will become void.

@Freekn - I booked a test drive after seeing your post and put down an order for a Model Y myself shortly after, so thanks!

For reference, they have also added the Mobile Connectors (for home charging) back to a standard car purchase.

    • Congratulations! The waiting is painful. Hope we get it by end of Feb (BIG WISH). Great news about the Mobile Connectors, an added bonus. I didn't realise how many places you can charge for free until I typed in EV charing station on Google Maps, and so many free chargers at main entrance of shopping centres too. It's great. Also some premium parking for free whilst charging at many popular landmarks.
Have a look at Aliexpress they have an endless amount of accessories for the Model 3 and Y.

      • +2

Have a look at plugshare - this lists all ev chargers which may not show up on google maps.
Be sure to select the tesla and type 2 chargers in the map filters.

Aliexpress are good, there’s also local resellers such as tessories and braumach which are equally as good.

        • great.. Thank you.

      • @Freekn I know what you mean. I've driven my car for over 17 years and have been waiting to upgrade. You'd think that after waiting this long, a few months would be nothing….. but it's painful.

And thanks to you and @Heybargain for the tips re: EV chargers and Plugshare. I know some are free, but can't tell which ones are. Will have a look at Plugshare - maybe it has more info.

The only accessory I need for now is a proper Heads Up Display. Looking to the left at the screen is a little distracting… any you two would suggest?

        • +1

I like this.. not intrusive. and i guess you would not know it's there when car is off. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004653232445.html?pdp_np…

        • +2

Plugshare will tell you what’s free, cost, provider etc. Also be sure to download the apps for the chargers and register an account such as Evie, Chargefox etc. you will need to use these apps to unlock / start charging.

Tip: order an Evie rfid card (free). Link this card with chargefox and you can use this card instead of the app which can at times be fiddly.

Another helpful app is ABRP (especially if you are going on road trips). This will help you plan your trip, when to charge, how long to charge for etc.

I haven’t found the need for a hud and you’ll prob get used to it after a bit of driving. But the one linked above is fine from aliexpress I’ve seen others use them (my comment above was removed as I linked to a product on aliexpress).

          • @Heybargain: Thanks for the tips - really appreciate them. Looks like I have a lot of homework to do.

    • Only cars that comes in Q1 will be equipped with UMC I believe.

    • This is new? So they now have added this into the purchase of the car? I cant seem to find any reference online, only else able to confirm?

      • +1

@nivels007 The sales guy mentioned it to me just before I test drove the car, and I had to double check because I remember it being removed. I couldn't find anything either when I got back and tried to look it up, so I emailed the sales guy after I placed my order and got confirmation in writing.

        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/108535/101002/screensh… - if it helps.

        • Ah awesome, thanks drayke9. I put an order in late november and they stated otherwise, will follow up on this. Thanks for chucking up a reference!

          • @nivels007: @nivels007 No probs. The Sales guy did say they announced they were adding UMCs back to car purchases just 2 days prior to my test drive (I test drove on Tues 10 Jan). Not sure if it applies in retrospect, but push for it!

            • @drayke9: Interesting. I was under the understanding that it's only for cars delivered in Q1 2023 (January through to end of March). Hopefully you gets yours either before end of March, or it comes with it if after!

              • @Heybargain: I emailed my sales rep and he wrote back and said that the UMC will be included if the car is delivered in the first quarter of 2023

              • @Heybargain: Well, I think I win either way - I have that in writing now so I will be getting a UMC regardless. Hopefully by Q1!

  • Funny how the Labor governed states and Territory's are the highest priced.

Here I thought Labor was all about action on climate change.
Seems it is the Liberal held States that act and do with greater subsidies for the public.

Been considering an EV but whatever savings are to be had gets eaten away by crazy insurance premiums. Quotes are expensive.

From 2 May 2021, the VIC Government will offer a ZEV Subsidy of $3,000 on new zero emissions vehicles with a Vehicle Subtotal (dutiable value) of less than $68,740 (including GST)

However the model Y now costs $68,900 ?

    Are you serious?

    • I know it's crazy right, SA is the same ($3k plus free rego for 2 years)! Hopefully the local reps can get us that extra $160 off or at least shifted to delivery fee or something.

      • my local sales guy reckons it is what it is…and they are aware that it doesn't meet the subsidy by a few hundred dollars….they don't seem to care

i really don't understand tesla and i'm hoping a competitor like the ioniq comes in quickly and makes vehicles available at the right price point and then i will cancel my order and elon aka the douche can get stuffed

        • sales guys won't be able to adjust pricing anyway. wouldn't it be a VIC government issue then since it's their policy on subsidy?

        • It's more of a govt issue than anything else.

          • @pogichinoy: no it's not, the government doesn't set the tesla pricing.
tesla can easily adjust their pricing however to suit the rebates
this is what they have done in the US also, they probably don't have anyone in OZ who owns this and understands this properly, they could sell thousands of more cars that way

@MrBillions: No one said the govt sets Tesla pricing. Of course they don't.

Telsa sets its pricing based on what they deem as suitable based on the market competition and of course, ensure profitability.

Why would Tesla drop their prices to meet the rebate when its only $3k? It's $7k in the US with the price cap above the price of the EV.

It's entirely a govt policy issue. They keep talking green, especially the Labor state govts but they offer a paltry EV incentive.

    • For Model Y, it is $68900+$400+$1400. Subsidy threshold is calculated AFTER options, order fee and delivery fee.
