Tesla Model Y from $70,700 Delivered + On Road Costs @ Tesla

64613

Hi All,

Just came back from Tesla in Chadstone. The Model Y has a $3000+. price drop. Just started today at lunch time.
Went for a test driver and when I came back, the sales guy said he just received an email confirming a price drop on the Model Y.
Being a true OZBARGAIN guy, I bought one. Took all of 5 mins to order. 2 - 4 month deliver time.
If anyone thinking of getting one, now is a good time before they have massive back orders I guess.

State Driveaway price
VIC $74666
NSW $71757
ACT $71337
NT $73570
QLD $72856
SA $74360
TAS $71303

      • Ah ok thanks for clarifying, I was misled, I knew after options but I thought order/delivery was exempt. Unlikely to drop another approx $2k anytime soon I'm guessing.

    • @MrBillions - I was a little miffed too, till I saw @Igaf's link:

      https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/electric-vehicle-incentives…

The Rebate fine print states that it only applies to the final price which includes delivery charges, that is below $68,740.

      • +1

In the US they are tweaking the price to match the rebates…here we have the aussie tax…

so really only the model 3 standard which qualify…disappointing elon

  • Either a bunch of Y's are dropping before Luna new year or then right after when everyone is back

  • +2

Interesting that Tesla just dropped the price across the range today in the US… Some drops are around 20% …

Tesla Model 3 RWD: Reduced from $46,990 to $43,990 USD
Tesla Model 3 Performance: Reduced from $62,990 to $53,990 USD
Tesla Model Y Long Range: Reduced from $65,990 to $52,990 USD
Tesla Model Y Performance: Reduced from $69,990 to $56,990 USD

Plus the US$7500 tax credit is available…

Looks like similar drops in Canada too… Will be interesting to see if the drops will flow to other markets as well..

    • Doubt it will flow through to AU. Considering we just had a price drop recently. I think they have learned their mistake in China. Dropping price multiple times within a short period of time will lead to PR damage. In saying that, I read WA and ACT buyers aren’t getting the rebate because the price is couple hundred bucks more. I hope they somehow can give those states a reduction!

  • -2

    20% off now that's a real bargain !!

The PPP equivalent of a Made in China Tesla Model Y in Australia should be around $54K AUD.
At this price I would consider one.

    • +1

I agree…But unfortunately we have the Aussie tax

  • What is the advantage of buying model Y as Model 3 is cheaper and is elligible for gov $3000 rebate?

    • +2

Model Y is like a compact SUV, whereas model 3 is like a sedan

    • +1

More storage in the Y and also higher driving height.

  • No deal, no bargain at all - really, how does this ad even make it onto these forums?

    • I commented on not being able to meet anyone who has an ev in ozbargain meet up this year in another forum, got negged, not sure why.

Tesla doesn't have annual vehicle service schedule. Adding the service schedule to byd still cost significantly less than Tesla.

Cost a fortune to purchase an ev with extended range. For an ev to achieve the range of a toyota hybrid, the cost the ev is much more than the combined cost of hybrid vehicle + maintenance + petrol.

  • +2

Thanks OP booked one. They have also stopped giving charger with the car so looks like will have to buy one.

    • I believe they are included again…typical Tesla fashion. Changes at will.

      • I think it is for cars delivered inQ1. It is something like Samsung phone sales 😵‍💫

Musk shadow-bans Journalist "Ken Klippenstein" from Twitter after he Posts Article of Tesla Auto Pilot Crash

Surveillance Footage Of Tesla Crash On Sf’s Bay Bridge Hours After Elon Musk Announces “self-driving” Feature
    https://theintercept.com/2023/01/10/tesla-crash-footage-auto…

"The driver told police that he had been using Tesla’s new “Full Self-Driving” feature, the report notes, before the Tesla’s “left signal activated” and its “brakes activated,” and it moved into the left lane, “slowing to a stop directly in [the second vehicle’s] path of travel.”

After you watch this footage, how can anyone rely on Telsa Vision or Auto-Pilot …

… queue the Tesla Reps with their neg votes … ;)

    • -1

Doesn't that video just illustrate how poor the non autonomous drivers did, not paying attention and they all were unable to stop when cars in front stopped.

      • -3

        WT?

On a freeway, a Telsa on Dumb Pilot veers into on coming traffic in a tunnel and then its Dumb Pilot "phantom breaking" kicks in and brings the Tesla to an immediate stop in the tunnel (in front of oncoming traffic) and causes a massive car pileup and this is the fault of the other drivers ?

You may need to read the Police Report that is noted in the article.

  • ABC 730, tonight, lithium battery in scooters causing fire. How likely will these happen in ev cars?

    • Interesting report.

ABC News - Concerns over growing number of fires linked to lithium-ion batteries in e-scooters and e-bikes
      https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-18/e-scooter-lithium-bat…

"Lithium-ion batteries are highly energy-dense and contain electrolytes that are highly flammable,"

"Fires can be triggered by overcharging, overheating or exposure to extreme temperatures, physical abuse, short-circuiting, battery cell defects and ageing.

"an e-scooter that caught fire at a Brisbane house last week and five people were hospitalised."

"[In 2022] we have experienced as many injuries, deaths, and overall fires involving lithium-ion batteries as we have from the previous three years combined."

Surely the Tesla's are safe …

      • +1

There have been other manufacturers which have also had fire issues, such as BYDs, VWs, Porsche, Hyundai, BMW and others. Not just Tesla.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plug-in_electric_vehicle_fire_…

        • Good point.

I expect the issue with EV's catching fire is the underlying technology of Lithium batteries as opposed to the car brand.

        • Would toyota hybrid be safer compared to ev as the battery capacity is 10 times smaller?

The Elon / Tesla Court Cases just get better and better

News - Reuters - Tesla video promoting self-driving was staged, engineer testifies
    https://www.reuters.com/technology/tesla-video-promoting-sel…

"An October 2016 video that purported to showcase Tesla's self-driving technology in action 'was actually Staged', according to July 2022 testimony from a senior engineer at the company reviewed by Reuters, which was first to report the development."

"Tesla director of autopilot software Ashok Elluswamy said human drivers intervened on the test runs - and when they tried showing the Tesla parking without a driver, the 'Car Crashed' into a fence in the company's parking lot. "

Elon Musk implied the car was driving itself with "no human input at all."

    Got my delivery date now

    Thinking about refusing the delivery

More price drops to come in OZ, I am sure and then hopefully it meets the government EV credit also

Tesla doesn't seem to give me any other option than cancelling my order and re-ordering again (losing my order fee)
completely inflexible, not customer centric. They had it too good for too long but the clock is ticking with competion ramping up.

Elon & co has become a total douche, not impressed

    • Why do you want to refuse delivery? Due to future price drops?

      • Yes, US and China have dropped prices massively, not just piddly $3k (which was the orignal price anyway). -10K or more.
If Tesla people in OZ had any brains they will drop the prices so the government EV credit applies and then they would see huge order volumes like US and China.
The more I understand about Tesla the more I dislike this brand. Tech first, customer last.

Quality issues, sunshade missing for OZ, Consolse inserts extra, useless floormats (which others do too), all this plus the above just adds up to piss me off and go elsewhere

        • +1

Quality issues, sunshade missing for OZ, Consolse inserts extra, useless floormats (which others do too),

Didn't these all exist prior to your order though?

    • +2

Not an elon fan,but why should telsa not keep your order fee for a change of mind order cancellation?

If you're so confident on a future price drop seems you'd still come out ahead.

Seems insane to me you'd order, choose to cancel, and then do some research to determine Tesla has had it too good for too long and the ceo is a "total douche" , and then complain about losing your rather small $ order fee.

Try doing a change of mind cancel at any other car manufacturer and see how that goes. Any return of deposit is going to be a guaranteed outcome.

      • +1

Did heaps of research, caves in and orders in July
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12319886/redir

        • Yes…since then heaps of s* happened with Tesla and twitter etc…

Also what genuine car manufacturer drop the price by up to 25% overnight. That's unheard of and devalues your purchase immediately.

And yes I was a huge Tesla fan before and made good money with Tesla shares. Changed my view on Tesla and Elon omce I saw how they are cutting corners and the douche behaving like a child with twitter….. Let that sink in…

          • +1

@MrBillions: Ok. You won’t get any sympathy from tesla so i would just loose the $350 deposit and move on with life. There’s other EVs out there so get one of those.

        • -2

Yes, this review said it all

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KP8x2pEcbo
          start watching 27:17

      • +1

That is no problems. Just check with Lexus or jaguar or Landrover dealers for example..cancel for any reason and you'll get a full refund. The deposit however is $1k to $2k and you'll get that back. They are not keeping your money like Elon.

I did ask to take delivery later (not Change my mind) but apparently that is not possible…

        • -1

cancel for any reason and you'll get a full refund

I also enjoy making up things to justify my position, that may not be based on reality.

        • -3

@MrBillions One way to take get out of purchasing the Tosla is to find a fault during 'pre-delivery'

Most likely faults you'll find on a new Tosla:

          • 'Any' uneven gaps in the panels
          • 'Any' issues / bubbles / orange peeling effect with paint finish
          • 'Any' scratch in the internal plastics
          • 'Any' wrinkles / bubbles in Vinyl seats
          • 'Any' uneven alignment of camera / light fittings
          • 'Any' uneven carpet alignment / carpet fittings
          • Alignment of front seats
          • Squeaking noises
          • The wipers do not work (well enough)
          • Decorative moldings loosen
          • The lights do not work properly
          • Yellow edges around the display screens
          • Windows that do not close completely
          • Problems with the air conditioner

You can also do a YouTube search and you should get a large cache of videos showing delivery issues identified on 'brand new' Tosla's

… queue the Tosla reps and fanbois …

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Thanks. I don't want to get out. I just want to take delivery later eg. June.

            Also I'm not alone

            https://www.wired.com/story/teslas-problems-elon-musk-twitte…

Tesla’s Problems Go Way Beyond Elon Musk
The EV giant is alienating its customers, bringing in less revenue, and falling behind legacy carmakers.

            • @MrBillions: I would wait as I expect Tesla will need to align Australia with the same discounts in USA / Europe

i.e. offer Australian customers 20% off the current pricing of a Model 3 / Y

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yep that is why I will delay my delivery. Save $10k at.least. I have ozbargain DNA after all. That model Y car should be in the $50k range. The EV novelty will wear off and others will catch up. See Kia and Hyundai.

Also compare the Y to Mazda CX-5. There is so much car for your money and for below $50k.

                • +1

@MrBillions: Agreed. Watch the Tesla tear-down video where they work out the cost to build a Tesla and using industry standard margins for a new car, the Model Y should be priced at $52K in Australia.

            • @MrBillions: what makes you think it'll drop by June? I suspect you are right about future drops

              • +1

@chid: Pre orders for the last 10 months had a delivery window for Feb to May 2023. That was a very long order lead time. These orders will get filled at the current price.

They now updated the next drop to April June delivery window. The lead times have shortened as capacity ramped up. When capacity ramps up there will be more stock.
On top of that we will see more competition and economic head winds. All of this will put more pressure on pricing.

It is likely that from now till then we will see another reduction. Once again in US and China we saw drops of up to 20%.
This just brings the Tesla closer to a price level where it should be.

At some stage they will also need to introduce other variants too eg. Long range or standard AWD which further may change base model pricing.

    Thanks

    • +2

It’s a 2-4 month estimated delivery time. Lucky if you get it in feb.

  • -1

They won't let me move the delivery date without forfeiting my order fee. I'm not saying no to the vehicle purchase. Just need it a bit later. This attitude sucks. I'm seriously reconsidering it all.

    • Ok. We’ve heard you numerous times now. Thanks.

      • +1

That's because I had three phonecalls from them in the last three days and I'm threatening them with the ACCC now. I'll keep y'all posted…I'm sure I'm not alone.

        • Please do. Let’s see what the ACCC say.

          • @Heybargain:

Let’s see what the ACCC say

Nothing, because like most Karen-esque complaints they never actually follow through with their 'threats'

        • -1

ACCC for change of mind cancellation.?

I assume you can link to the section in the contact you signed up to when you placed your order, which shows that they should be refunding you your order fee, and shows Tesla are clearly in the wrong.

          • +1

@SBOB: How is it change of mind?
I'm taking delivery when it suits me. Not when it suits them.

Waiting for the car for 8 months with a 4 months delivery window and really no idea if this Feb or May? No updates either.

All of a sudden asked to cough up $76k within three weeks or lose your order fee. That's just plain stupid and not customer centric.

And then when I turn up to take delivery it may have panel gaps and other issues? Wtf…

              @MrBillions:

How is it change of mind?
I'm taking delivery when it suits me

This the first car you've ever ordered? Find me another brand (in the same price category) that will happily store your newly ordered car at the dealership for months on end waiting for you to find your $

All of a sudden asked to cough up $76k within three weeks or lose your order fee

If you couldn't afford the car when you ordered it, perhaps you should not have ordered it.

None of the other 'complaint' based excuses you're using are valid for the contract you agreed to, and all existed at the time of your order..

For example, no idea why you are using a US made cars QC YouTube video to justify what might exist on one produced in a different factory. A video that you could find examples of that existed prior to your order

And the fact you just want to delay pickup means it's a non issue for you anyway. Any of these issues aren't disappearing by waiting 3 mths

Quality "Buyer's remorse 101" class content you're delivering though.

              • -1

@SBOB: You still don't get it.
They can sell it someone else and just put me back into the queue but I don't accept them taking my order fee.

But at the end you're probably right. I'm just going to cancel and buy a proper car from a trustworthy manufacturer instead. The Macan EV should be available in 2025.

Funny how things change. I used to be a big Tesla Fanboy… This changed when the douche started to act up…

                • +1

@MrBillions: wait this makes no sense,
there are so many people i know, that have moved their order queue, and delayed it - no issues

To be fair you should not need to delay it more than 1-2 weeks anyways, if not get a family member to take it…

                  • +1

@BaeSuzy: Thanks for letting me know.
How did they do that? Did they lose their order fee?
Latest update here is that my trade in value car has been assessed by Tesla for $5k but on carsales they go for $60-85k based on the KM…it gets better every day with this transaction…

                    • @MrBillions: Then sell it private and enjoy your practically free Tesla…

                      • @SBOB: I will…that is if I'm taking delivery of the vehicle…still pondering over the whole situation

                    • @MrBillions: What are you selling, that is valued at 5k by Tesla?

                    • @MrBillions: nope,
                      no issues

if they are delayed more than 1-2 weeks, they lose their spot thats it…

            • -2

              @MrBillions:https://youtu.be/w0zFGiWmwsw

Wow in that 2nd video you posted, Tesla charges new buyers to fix panel gaps issues. WT?

  • Wonder whats the % of people picking up their tesla having minor defects? is it close to 90%? if thats the case i might as well forget about even checking the car upon pick up

    • On various Facebook tesla groups the % of people having issues has been very small. The ones coming from China seem to not have many issues. I didn’t have any defects with mine.

UK model Y price drop was over £7,000 or more than $11,000. US model Y price drop was US$ 13,000

    • +2

Exactly my point!!! It will come here too. Not a matter of if but when. This post got 650 votes …wait for the next one when the model Y is $60k

everyone who ordered the model y, got the newly dropped price anyways!

      • -1

I don't want to be seen as an ambassador for Elon Musk's cars

Tesla has to be really careful when more alternatives become available. Once the stock has recovered also then I'm selling that off too.

    I'm out. Bye.

    • +2

Given EVs are around twice the price of a similar petrol or diesel vehicle, many people simply cannot afford them. So price will be even more a factor in new car purchases. Tesla and the like cannot compete for the mass market with Chinese companies. China will crush all European and US manufacturers. You only need to look at companies like BYD and even MG with their electric vehicles. Plus EVs are going to make motor vehicles even more of a disposable item, they will have no resale after about 7 or 8 years.

Yes, its called Phantom Breaking and is a Tesla specific issue.

Have not heard of any other brand in the world exhibiting the same issue.

      • Honda also has phantom breaking issues.

        • -3

Stand corrected, I didn't know Honda had a Phantom Braking issue in Australia.

I know that with Tosla its due to the useless Tosla Vision which is a marketing gimmick as they have removed radar and ultra-sonic sensors (dumb ass move Musky Smell) which makes the camera's blind in dark / bright scenes and varying shadows on the road. There are heaps of YT video's that show this happening in real time.

          What's the cause for Honda?

      • +1
