SNSMD3...

Saw it on my ebay list and could not believe first but looks like it's 12th gen i7 M15 for just over 1k. Note there is some discrepancies in the description saying it's 11th gen but I bought it any way before it runs out of stock and have messaged to confirm the spec. Will update once I get a response.

          • @reactor-au: No it's not normal at all !! Latest generation I7 1260P should be sleeping at idle. 28W CPU should be absolutely doing 0 load and 0 noise and almost cold to the touch AT IDLE.Please let's not joke!!! Technology goes ahead not behind !! Don't fall for these issues !!! Because that's what they are: ISSUES!! Let's not make issues as normality because that is what big company wants us to think. Wake up

            • @MarioBros: Except it's a 28w CPU with a turbo power limit of 64w in a compact space with a cooling solution that's probably prioritising silence over temperature. Did you check is even idling? What was the frequency and power consumption at so called idle?

              • @reactor-au: 40W limit. And sorry again a laptop with latest generation I7 can't heat to 60 degrees with 2 tabs opened. It just can't !!! Sorry. That is absolutely not right. I'm expecting an answer from Intel soon with some excuses as well !! As I'm in need of a laptop right now and I don't have it. Why??? Because I need to wait for them to "assess" the item. Assess something that hits 60 degrees with 2 tabs open. A complete JOKE !!

                • @MarioBros: You also forgot it's CPU+iGPU. In my opinion it's normal

                  • @reactor-au: No I didn't forget ! It's not the first year that we have igpu into CPUs…. nothing new !

  • I would like to hear from @MarioBros what intel is saying about over heating.

    • Still in assessment….. I'll update everyone soon….

      • Thank you

        • So…the store said that upon checking with Intel….they declared it as "fine". So I picked up myself from the store today. However I opened it and it's still crazy!!! 71 degrees with absolutely no Apps opened!! Just 1 app to check the stats of the machine! That's all. This laptop has some serious issues and I'm going to the bottom of it !! I'm already doing my own assessment with Intel myself and I got the issue escalated to the top of Intel. For me "it's running fine" it's not an answer. I want a technical answer at this point or my money back !!! I won't keep this garbage!!

          • @MarioBros: Thanks for sharing information. I would be keen to hear what they are saying technically

            • @pratikshah2003in: No problems! I am up with the laptop right now been using it since today and am experiencing some kind of normality….. After some windows update. Few tabs opened+WhatsApp+ some other apps and laptops is running fine at 6% CPU load with 53/54 degrees Celsius…. Which isn't too bad considering I don't have any air-conditioning going on. Occasionally CPU load spikes up for no apparent reason and so the fans….. Still testing it…..

              • @MarioBros: Go to add/remove programs and remove anything not needed, then open the windows store and remove anything not needed.
Check drivers and firmware are up to date.
Then open two manager and story by power usage to see what's active.
I think it's fine, latest gen CPUs spike a lot and laptops don't have massive cooling solutions so they become heat saturated with in seconds.

                • @reactor-au: Thank you, will try tonight. The office suite I'm pretty sure I'm not able to manually remove it. Any idea on how to?

Got the unit and have run some tests and add some additional cooling for the laptop, though I should share some info here.
First of all, the fan curve and power management are not ideal on the unit, and under-volting is not an option. So, u have to limit CPU speed to 99% in order to control the heat output. This can solve the issue of fan staying at high rpm at a cost of peak performance, which is not ideal, but the CPU has more than enough power even when limited to no turbo boost. Intel 12th gen CPU all runs very hot which they fixed with the 13th gen, but I don't think the price will be this good with the newly 13th gen, and the availability is another issue.
Second, the SSD and screen is pretty good, Samsung PM9A1 with a screen that offers about 99% sRGB coverage is definitely above the average. The only concern is that PM9A1 will runs pretty hot and the stock cooling pad is not that good, so I think it's better to improve the cooling on SSD if you will do a lot of file transfer or writing.
It also includes 16G of DDR5 5200, which compare to the NUC mini computer, this laptop is a true bargain as NUC does not include RAM, SSD, screen or battery. And this laptop is only about A$100 more in price.
The overall build quality is pretty solid, and definitely looks and feels premium. The only drawback is the lack of the number pad which I really missed, but I guess u can't have a perfect laptop at this price.

    • Thanks for the update. Still am waiting for my one. Also need to sell my current dell 7506 with 11th gen i7.

      • Really appreciated for sharing the deal.
Was looking to get a NUC mini PC as a HTPC and secondary PC for some hobby stuff, and this laptop better fits the budget and requirement.
Heat management is a bit of an issue, but for the price and everything else, I think I can let it slide. The cooling is actually better if the lid is closed (or fully open at 180) as it blocked the airflow if opened normally, so after I set it up vertically as a desktop, thermal should further improve. For laptop usage, I think further limit CPU to 80% should make it a lot cooler and more appropriate for mobile use case.

        • i shared a amazon link of a cooler i was looking at and it got blocked but something like these should solve your thermal issue.

          https://www.google.com/search?q=laptop+cooling+pad&rlz=1C1ON…

          • @Safoan: Thanks for the advice, but I think I find the issue.
With windows 11, the power option (the old one) has no effect on controlling CPU clock speed no matter how u change the setting, so the CPU will have no restrictions on clock speed unless turbo boost is disabled. But the base clock for this CPU is a bit too low, so I think it needs to be kept on.
The new power option (in system setting) is not the same as the old one, and all it does is control the fan profile.
So, I think there is no solution to reduce the heat output of the computer but changing the new power option to 'efficient' can make the fan really quiet at the price of higher CPU temperature.
I guess I'll leave it as it is, since I need Win11 to make the best use of Intel 12th gen CPU and with 'performance' fan curve, it's not that bad as I don't really mind a bit of fan noise.

            • @kwk44: We received ours yesterday. The BIOS shows no fan control options, but it does have an option to "Undervolt" the CPU. Haven't looked into it too much yet. Have noticed that battery life on default Windows settings is pretty bad (like 2 hours bad), but changing to "Efficient" mode and turning "Battery Saver" on has pushed that out a bit. Need to figure out how to set max processor speed in Win11… everything's different!

              • @Aikendrum: I tried the undervolt option and run a few test, I can say that it doesn't really do anything, at least in the test that I performed. The windows 11 has a pretty confusing way of managing performance and power, haven't figured out how to control it yet. Battery saver option does something, but it's far from good. I guess I need to do a bit more research.

Just received it today and have been playing around with it for couple hours setting it all up.

Pretty impressed with it for the deal price, so thanks again OP!

Haven't really noticed the heat issue some have mentioned but I'm used to my 4 year old Dell Latitude which got hot anyway underneath…just feels warm on my legs (while wearing shorts). I haven't used it for any strenuous tasks yet though. I will try the suggestions above to see if that helps to reduce the 'warmness' anyway…I don't need optimal performance for my uses.

Had it plugged mostly all time so far so yet to see battery longevity performance but it has dropped 5% from fully charged over last 15 minutes or so. No idea if thats good or not.

    Couple negatives:

    • the hinge is not very tight when in opening direction (its tighter in the closing direction), so if I pick it up too fast and at angle while open the display panel can fall back
    • the power plug cable segment could have been longer
    • the trackpad integrated mouse buttons done have the same feel as I enjoyed with the latitude since the older model had separate mouse buttons below the trackpad. The intergrated feels a little flimsy
    • no webcam cover which would have been nice
