Panel Made in Japan

Looks like starting the New Year with 'new beginnings' holds true as my old tellie just died. I've done my research, looked at all options important to my needs to find the best value TV… And from a heritage brand.

SHARP televisions re-entered the Australian market last year through an appointed exclusive distributor (Tempo).

These televisions are 100% Sharp products, not 're-badged' Chinese products like other well known brands: Phillips, Toshiba, Hitachi, JVC, AKAI, TEAC, Seiki, etc.

SHARP are owned by Taiwanese assembly and microchip components company Foxconn, which happens to be the world’s biggest technology company.

  • Think the Sharp marketing team were having a laugh with the model number (4T-C60CK1X) when making the 65" version

  • Looking to get a PS5 sometime. Can’t seem to find the refresh rate or HDMI version for the 70”.

    Does anyone know? Thank you!

    • +2

      HDMI 2.0a

  • No offence, but if it is assembled in TW, that could be a problem. Years ago, I worked for a Japanese company, they have some products (lower end) assembled by TW company, it was a nightmare.

    • +1

Why have you .mentioned Taiwan, out of interest? These are not assembled.in Taiwan.

  • Hi Op, @SimAus007 or anyone else that knows. Do you think these will be better than my 10 year old Sharp Quattron? Cheers

    • Is that the one with the glass base?
I used to have one of those.:)
Leaps and bounds better if you watch 4K content.
What do you use for "smart TV" functionality, currently, Fire Stick, Xbox, Fetch TV?

      • +1

Thanks mate, the one I've got came after those glass base ones (I had one of them too). I use a Nvidia Shield to make it smart. I think I'm just nervous seeing the price that they aren't premium like they were back then, but I'm sure you are right, these are 4k. Hope they still have that more 'natural' look compared to the Samsungs etc of that period of time.

        • +2

If you are near a Good Guys I'd recommend taking a look at the 70", it has a much more premium finish than the 60".
You'll see what I mean when comparing the two.
          Panels are the same, however.

          • +1

            @SimAus007: Will do. Cheers

            • +2

@PSEACT: I find the black transitions far better on these than the old Quattrons (which were great at that time), I think you'll be surprised.
The 70" has premium metal feet and the external construction is also metal, but very light in weight and thin.
I have mine wall mounted and the weight helped with this factor.

  • Anyone know how is it compared to TCL C835 interms of picture quality.?

I could never go a Sharp product, they were always the Big W and K-Mart brands when i was growing up and they were trash

    • +1

Sharp was the best LCD TV brand in Japan, at least from about 2005 to 2012. Not sure about now. Probably between Sony and Sharp.

      • +1

The reason Sharp is not so common is because they used to be so expensive. Sharp makes the best LCD panels in the world.

    • +2

How long ago was that? When I was growing up, Sharp CRT TVs were excellent, just one rung below Sony.

      • Probably 25 years or so ago

        • +1

I reckon you're thinking of Sanyo. They were definitely a Big W sort of brand back then.

Sharp had a pretty good reputation with their LCD TVs 15 or so years ago.

          • @jwh: These definitely weren’t LCD 😂

        • +1

Get your hand off it Batman, Sharp were the best TV’s Back in the day 😂

    • +2

If it doesn't say "local array dimming" then it's probably just edge lit LED, which will never compare to local array dimming like the OP TV.
But that's a reasonable price for a 75" low end TV. I'd prefer to pay $200 more and lose 5" for the better picture.

    • +2

On 15 November 2017, Hisense reached a deal to acquire 95% of Toshiba Visual Solutions (televisions) for US$113.6 million.
So, anyone that buys a Toshiba are buying a re-badged Hisense television. Each to their own, but good luck with that..
I agree, I prefer to pay an additional $200. lose the 5" for a Japanese panel with better picture.

  • Father in law gave us a 70 inch Sharp TV he wasn't using any more. In the rumpus room now. Operating system was horrible but Chromecast with Google TV fixed that and the picture is still superb.

    • Must be very old. The new ones all run on Android TV. The OS is fluid and intuitive now. Although, like you, so many people use their own device to make a TV "smart".now.
I don't even use the OS on my TV, my Xbox does all of that,.for others it might be a PS, Apple TV, Fetch, Chromecast, Amazon Fire etc.

  • +1

Op or any owners able to advise if what the refresh rate of the tv / panel is?

All my googling can't locate this info!

    • same. i would like to know too

    • Website says hdmi2.0a which would mean 60hz

  • Do they still have yellow pixels? lol

  • +2

Sharp makes the best LCD panels in the LCD industry.

  • Can you game on them? How is the input lag?

    • I use mine for my Xbox and don't notice any issues with lag personally (I have the 70" version).

  • Tcl quhd 75 was under a grand during Christmas. I got it and it's awesome picture quality on 4k. For the average punter being most of us it's more than perfect and probably not notice any difference

    • TCL<Sharp

      • According to who and based on what.Unless you have a new one to compare noone is qualified to comment. Also 3 year warranty,USB 2.1,120hz ,hdr10+,cmr100. Bang for buck show me better

Do these TVs have something similar to LG's magic remote? I can't imagine myself using my smart tv without the mouse pointer experience my LG provides

    • No, I don't think any new LG has the pointer now either, using WebOS, does it?
The Sharp 60" & 70" use Google voice navigation via the remote instead.
Ie, press the google button and say "open Netflix".

      • Oh that sucks. Has LG really stopped doing that? I never found voice nav useful. Opening apps is one thing, I find the pointer particularly useful in typing search terms in YouTube app and browser app. Much faster and easier than having to reach every single letter using arrow buttons.

        • My brother recently bought a new LG TV and that definitely doesn't have the pointer.
I've used Google voice on the remote for searching on Youtube, it's very fast.
I might try to make a video and post the link here to view it (if I can be bothered LOL).

        • +3

Here is a video I just took using voice control on my 70" Sharp accessing YouTube: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Alyjv7Xj6-9XroR3oJFBY-ZzgvshTQ?e=cu07zM

  • No HDMI 2.1 or refresh rate higher than 60Hz so not ideal for Xbox Series S/X or PS5 but nice TV otherwise.

I looked into Sharp SG, Sharp MY and Sharp HK, and found the following:

    4T-C70CK3X - 2021 Model
X4 Master Engine Pro II processor (first referenced in 2018)
60 Hz (unconfirmed - but newer models are 60Hz)
    HDMI2.0a
    "Wide Colour" display
    Android 9
    225W power consumption

    4T-C70DK1X - 2022 Model (same chassis as C70CK3X)
X4 Revelation Processor (first referenced in 2021, "faster CPU performance (by 147% 48%) and quicker graphics (up to 10x) when compared to its older X4 Master Engine Pro II")
    60 Hz
    HDMI 2.1
    "Deep Chroma Display"
    Android 11
    215W power consumption

4T-C70DL1X - 2022 Model (more expensive than C70DK1X, identical chassis with new legs)
    X4 Revelation Processor
    60 Hz
    HDMI 2.1
    "Deep Chroma Display" UV2A panel
    Android 11
    215W power consumption

So the deal model 4T-C70CK3X is basically a Sony X80J with full array.

    • "4T-C70CK3X is basically a Sony X80J with full array"

Does Sony and Sharp share the same panel and system board?

      • Yeah I'd like to know how this comparison was made too.

        • feature set - X80J is a 60Hz backlit but not full array LED TV with HDMI 2.0 and a processor that is more than 3 years old.

    • How does the Sharp Full Array compare with the TCL C727 4K QLED Full Array TV

  • I keep seeing a bad word when I read the model number

  • Ah no 120hz is a deal breaker for me coz I want it for console gaming.

    • +1

I use it on my Xbox and don't notice any lag, but perhaps I'm just not a hardcore enough gamer to notice :)

I couldn't stop thinking about this Sharp tv full array led, 4k, hdr Sharp goodness

I bit the bullet. Plus i wanted to support Sharps return to Australia.

I am sure you will love it.

Did you get the 70" one?

      • +2

Just the 60". For the money its hard to pass up. I have an OLED, so this Sharp will be a massive upgrade for my mum.

Just took the plunge on the 70.

    • +1

Well done, I'm sure you'll love the 70" build quality, I certainly do :)
Not sure why OzBargain has the listing as expired, I'm still seeing the 70" on sale at $1299.

      • Reading the reviews on the Good guys’d website and looks like the 70” TV has been on $1299 12 months ago and knowing the new models have been released in Asian countries, I guess this would be the run out model and should be discounted further soon!!

  • -1

Is this still endorsed by George Takei and has yellow pixels?

  • This TV is not Full Array as claimed by some.
Instead it’s Direct Lit as per specifications

    • Damnit I think you might be right the contrast ratio does not impress. Blacks are grey and the backlight certainly does not seem to be individually controlled full array backlit. I have to say i am disappointed. But i have not checked out all the settings yet.

  • Specs say it's Backlight:
Direct LED and not full array backlit. Have to say the first thing i noticed was the not very impressive blacks. I haven't played with settings yet.

    • I noticed the same when checking it out in-store, but it was in a poor location to compare with other TVs and there was no remote available.

Interested to know if you're able to set it up better.

      • Slight improvement. But the black levels are not fantastic. 4k content looks good as long as its a bright scene. A shame the OP mis advertised the feature of full array backlighting instead of direct lit led.

        • It does put out a good image don't get me wrong. Its good value. OLED has spoilt me tho.

          • @dingaling2: I've noticed the "Movie" or "Comfort" image presets seem to bring back the darker contrast that i was missing. Overall, the TV is very good value i wont deny.

  • I bought the 70” six days ago and set it up yesterday. I was very happy with the picture quality and the look of the TV, but a few hours later, it developed a horizontal line that stretches across the entire screen. The line is present on all inputs and it's there even if I remove all the hdmi, TV ant and network cables.

I spoke to The Good Guys today expecting to arrange a replacement, but they palmed me off to Tempo Central Service AUS who appear to be a nightmare to deal with according to Google reviews.

If I had taken up the cheaper Amazon deal on the Philips TV posted here, Amazon would have organized a return within the 30 day window without the headaches I’m now facing with The Good Guys.

    • That sucks. Go straight to the store manager.
And if they don’t help call The Good Guys Head Office.
There is no need for TGG to be f’ing you around over a faulty item you have only used for 6 days.
      Unacceptable service.

      • Save your time and write a complain to fair trading. It will be resolved in less than a week

    • those lines that go across the screen are almost always the display cable connection to the video board. Simply reseating should fix that. See it on Laptop LCD's all the time.
But TGG should just swap it considering how fresh out of the box it is!

I had to forgo my warranty as i had to lay the TV flat to transport it home. I was worried all the bumps in the road for 100Km's might end up with either a broken screen or lines through the screen but i was lucky it survived the trip!

  • Thanks guys.

I was told that Tempo will contact me within two business days so I’ll wait a couple of days and see.

Tempo would be Sharp’s service agent so I’d imagine they would be able to arrange a replacement.

The Good Guys are not interested in replacement when it comes to large TV’s.

The Good Guys have also yet to send a tax invoice to me (I’ve only received my order details) – I mentioned it to them on three occasions but their response was that it’s an online order.

On the last occasion when I called to ask how do they expect me to arrange a service call out without a tax invoice, the guy I spoke to made the arrangement for me and sent details of his submission (he was trying to be helpful though, unlike the manager of the TV section at The Good Guys (Northland) when I spoke to him earlier on the day). I really don’t know what to make of it – I thought they are legally obliged to provide a tax invoice. You’d think the TV fell off the back of a truck.

    • Seems like they're relying on you simply just accepting what they say rather than doing what they're supposed to. The manager sounds like he simply just doesn't care.

      I wouldn't accept a repair unless it's a simple on-site connecter reseat.

  • I received a return authority number from Tempo on Saturday. Contrary to the Google reviews, the service from Tempo was exceptionally good.

I rang The Good Guys this morning and to my surprise they were great as well. They apologized for not taking back the TV on the day and acknowledged that the advice I received at the time was incorrect.

Furthermore, they are organizing delivery of a replacement unit and pickup of the old unit at no cost to me.
Their system has also emailed a tax invoice to me.

Fingers crossed everything goes as expected.

    • Awesome to hear!

  • The TVs have further dropped the price in TGG. $799 for 60" and $899 for 70"

Whoever bought at a higher price can claim the Good Guys' best price guarantee.

    • You have to be a concierge member to claim the guarantee it seems: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/price-gaurantee-form-success

The Good Guys should, however, as a matter of principle and goodwill, make good the difference to those that bought on the New Year’s sale as they were falsely led to believe that the price was going to go back to 1699 thereafter. For The Good Guys to not only not raise the price after the sale, but to also drop it a further $400 is a kick in the guts to all that bought it during the sale.

In my case I had a TV with a major defect so I ended up organizing a return before ordering a unit on eBay.

On Tuesday, I had yet to hear from The Good Guys to organize the exchange offered to me the day before, so having seen the TV discounted further I called expressing my dilemma at whether to return the TV or not. The guy I spoke to sounded like the same guy as the day before, but he offered absolutely nothing for me to refrain from returning the TV. The guy actually said to me that “Sharp is not repairing the TV you have but replacing it with a new one” , LOL. I pointed out to him that we are both well aware that I had a right under consumer law to reject the TV for a full refund, and I ask him what he would do in my position to which there was no reply. He said I will be getting a call from someone to discuss the matter later.

Six hours later, not knowing how quickly the TV would sellout at the lower price, I called The good Guys several times before ending up speaking to the person (Pat) that was to call me about the exchange. I told him that it was just a courtesy call to inform him that I would be returning the TV tomorrow, which was fine with him.

The following morning I returned the TV and spoke to Pat about processing the refund and found it done by the time I got home.

The guy I talked to at the end was a really good guy, unlike some of the others I dealt with there that were more like Good Fellas.

      PS

The new TV was delivered this morning and it's working perfectly. I may use the savings to buy an air purifier.
