Panel Made in Japan

Looks like starting the New Year with 'new beginnings' holds true as my old tellie just died. I've done my research, looked at all options important to my needs to find the best value TV… And from a heritage brand.

SHARP televisions re-entered the Australian market last year through an appointed exclusive distributor (Tempo).

These televisions are 100% Sharp products, not 're-badged' Chinese products like other well known brands: Phillips, Toshiba, Hitachi, JVC, AKAI, TEAC, Seiki, etc.

SHARP are owned by Taiwanese assembly and microchip components company Foxconn, which happens to be the world’s biggest technology company.

Seems strangely cheap for a Japanese made panel

    • +12

Maybe typo in title, should be SharB

    • +4

Tell me about it! Had to carefully research this! The 'Made In Japan' panels are sent from SHARP Japan to the SHARP assembly plant in Malaysia.
The 60' and 70' televisions clearly have a sticker on the left hand top corner of the TV's stating 'Japan Panel' as well.
At this price point you will not get the quality and image these televisions deliver. I bought the 70' but the 60' is identical specifications.

    • -2

      Compared to what ?

    • +5

Definitely a Japanese panel, I have the 70" one and bought it back in January.
Absolutely love it, including how accurate the colour saturation is. Blacks look great also.
Might grab another for the bedroom at this price.

    SHARP TV 60'

60 and 70 feet TV are quite new to Australia.

    • LOLs Corrected! 'thanks' mate! :-D

      • You're welcome.

  • Made or assembled in Japan?

    .

    • +7

Made in Japan panel, assembled in Malaysia.

      • Are you sure they are assembled in Malaysia? According to Wikipedia the Sharp factory in Malaysia only makes TVs for the American market.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp_Corporation

Can anybody who has bought one of these Sharp TVs tell us what it says on the box "Made in ____________" ?

        • +1

Check with OP, as he's claiming to have bought one. As per his comment TVs are assembled in Malaysia using panels which are made in Japan.

        • I own one. Malaysia.

          • +1

@msjb: Same here, mine is assembled in Malaysia, panel made in Japan..

        • You trust wikipedia over the OP?

    • +5

Passing japan on the way from china to Australia

      • +3

Don't forget to pickup a TV.

      • Japanese panel from the Sharp factory, assembly in Malaysia.
On a side note, most iPhone screens are made by Sharp and assembled by Foxconn, the owner of Sharp.

  • Not bad but when the 55 inch CS oled is there for a couple hundreds more i would take that.

    • The LG CS Oled runs crappy WinOS. This sharp runs Android so heaps better.

      • Nothing a cheap Google TV or a slightly less cheap shield wouldn't fix

  • Im getting $899 for the 60"?

    • -3

      That is the deal mate

      • Not what it says in the title mate

        • -1

The title is a typo mate, wouldn't make sense to be 889

  • +8

Have had the 70" Sharp since May 2022.
Cant fault it. Paired it with a Polk S4 soundbar and all is good. Didn't want the usual Hisense, Samsung brands, preferred a heritage brand. The 3yr warranty was also pleasing to see.

    • +10

A bit of an irrational reason to buy a TV IMO…

First of all the website above has spelling errors, read “Google Assistan”…

Secondly it looks like the HDR spec only lists HDR10 and HLG, none of the premium DV or HDR10+ formats.

Thirdly if you wanted a “Heritage” brand, Sony is probably a better choice… Not sure how Sharp is supposed to be good anyway, I’m not aware they are in the film making business like Sony or Panasonic are.

And lastly, the reason why this TV is “cheap” because it is, it has a cheap feature set. And who cares the panel is “made in Japan”… It’s quite known in the industry that the Korean have been making to top end panels for a long time with WRGB OLED and now QD-OLED.

The Japanese are just riding on their “heritage” reputation from many years ago.

I don’t really have anything against the Japanese, all my my cars are Japanese because I don’t spend my hard earned money on fixing up expensive Euro cars, but you know Japanese consumer electronics industry is failing when the most popular phone in Japan is and iPhone.

      • -8

Yeah sonny is dead for tv i keep hearing they will quit making tv not sure when.
Already out from mobile phone i think?

Almost similar like nokia. So famous they forgot to inovate and get lag behind new comers.

And the customer services (in Australia)? Beyond crap. Had speaker broke 4x in 6 months and they keep insisted to repair. Needed accc involved and got the refund.

        • +8

Sonny is their child offshoot Chinese brand

        • Already out from mobile phone i think?

How about looking stuff up before making frivolous claims?

          • @Techie4066: They are out of the phone business in Australia, probably what they are referring to.

            • +1

@SimAus007: Well it would have to be, because they're still sold by Sony in the US and Europe and sales are climbing. Although their claim was about what Sony has "quit making" and is wrong.

      • +2

Good luck finding a Full Array direct lit Sony in this price range.

      • And the majority of iPhone screens are made by Sharp and assembled by Foxconn, the owners of Sharp.
So you most likely have a Sharp panel in your hand without even knowing it.

      • +3

Why was it an irrational decision ?
Because i didn't fall for all the typical salesman talk at JB Hifi ?

I have a panasonic plasma 50" for 12yrs and its still going strong at my holiday house.
I wanted a brand i could trust, who back their product for 3 years.

Yeah i couldve gone Hisense, Samsung and even Sony. But for $700 ($500 work voucher), why wouldn't i get the Sharp 70" ?

All i see is refurbed Hisense, Samsung, TCL and Sony tvs on marketplace….i dont see Sharp.

  • Yesterday saw here samsung (?) 75" for $1499 something, that one better right? From ebay

    • +1

That Samsung is edge lit while this Sharp is direct lit. So no local dimming on Samsung.

You won't find many full array LED TVs in this price range.

      • +1

I learnt about local dimming AFTER buying my LG :(

      • Doesn't look like it when I saw in store

        • +1

You won't see much difference in bright store lights.

          • @dealhunter52: Full array doesn't always mean local dimming though?

            • +1

@mr_asstight: That's correct. My comments was specific to the Samsung model in question, which is Edge lit and does not have local dimming.

  • +3

Does Dolby Audio really mean anything now? Kinda like how laptops went through a phase of Beats Audio

Also a little misleading to have Made in Japan at the top of the description when it's just referring to the panel

    • +4

Thats a selling point for me. (Sharp made in Japan panel)

      • +1

well yeah it's still a selling point, but the TV itself was not made in Japan, and currently the description could be misleading

  • Will never buy a sharp TV again. Bought a 70” about 7 years ago and after 2 years it started getting dark patches. Tried to make ACL claim but got nowhere.

    • +3

Just the opposite for me, bought a 46" about 9 years ago and it still works well.

      • +1

Threw my old Sharp out as the colours all got reversed . May of been an easy fix but I figured 15 years was a pretty good run .

  • +2

Would consider over those rebadges but nothing really special.

  • -2

    Low end Hisense

    • +7

Id go this Sharp over a low end Hisense any day

      • +4

        Absolutely. I couldn't agree more.

      • -4

Sharp sold in Australia is made by Hisense and cheaper than Hisense

        • +6

Absolute BS, Sharp in the USA until 2 years ago was made by Hisense for a short period of time, that agreement is no longer in place after Sharp and Hisense cancelled the agreement early and it went back to Sharp (North America only). No Sharp TV ever sold in Australia was made by Hisense. Get your facts correct before posting, please.

      • -5

lol, Please be aware that the Sharp TV brand had been actually sold to Hisense years ago, so low end Hisense is absolutely correct.

        • +1

          Incorrect, see above post.
Plenty of factual articles on this if you'd bother to do some research.

          • -5

@SimAus007: lol, you are correct. it's own by foxconn now, it seems to be even worse, YMMV.

            • +5

@dreamhunter: Sharp is still Sharp, it simply has a new major investor, Foxconn, which also make the majority of all iPhones.
iPhone's use Sharp panels, as do multiple well known brands of laptops.
PS: Sharp cancelled the agreement in the USA with Hisense as it wasn't happy with the quality of their manufacturing on Sharp branded TV's there, this can be found in legal proceeding documents which lead to them pulling the agreement early.

            • +2

@dreamhunter: lol all your shits have parts made by foxconn

            • +3

@dreamhunter: You might not be aware but most Apple products are assembled at a Foxconn facility. Foxconn also happen to be the world's largest technology manufacturer and service provider.

  • +2

I didn’t know Sharp was still around. Are they still trying to push their weird RGBY Quattron tech?

    • +2

What decade are you living in? ;)
They never stopped making TV's, they simply pulled out of the Australian market for TV's (much like Sony has for phones) and re-entered last year.
One of the biggest panel manufacturers in the world.

    • RGBY was proven to be a useless gimmick. It's thankfully dead now.

Not sure what Sharp were smoking when they came up with it..

  • +1

    SHARP did make fantastic Electronics.

Good Guys also sell a TOSHIBA tv designed in JAPAN but made in China or tweaked in Japan.

    • +2

Although Toshiba isn't actually made by Toshiba now (for TV's), they sold off the brand for TV's.

    • +1

On 15 November 2017, Hisense reached a deal to acquire 95% of Toshiba Visual Solutions (televisions) for US$113.6 million.
So, anyone that buys a Toshiba are buying a re-badged Hisense television. Each to their own, but good luck with that..

  • +3

I've had a 60" sharp TV for about 12 years and it has been fantastic and never skipped a beat with daily use. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

    • Is sharp the same company it was 12 years ago?

      • +2

Yep just that they are majority's owned by foxconn TW.

Foxconn keep them operational and funded to hopefully bring some good screen tech (sharp hold alot of IP and patents!)

  • Not many 60 or 70 inch screens. Wonder why they went with these rather than the ubiquitous 55, 65, or 75 inch screens?

  • These televisions are 100% Sharp products, not 're-badged' Chinese products

SHARP are owned by Taiwanese assembly and microchip components company Foxconn

    Nice marketing you got there.

    • At least they are posting facts, some merit for that, surely? :)

  • So this 70" or 65" TCL 65C735?

    • +1

The TCLs I've seen through work take ages to power up. I'd check that first.

    • +1

2yr warranty (TCL) vs 3yrs (Sharp). Respected brand vs a budget brand (may not matter so much to some buyers).
TCL 65C735 also has a known stange flicker; if you look at some of the trusted reviews.
Sharp 60" & 70" power up quickly as they have a snappy processor, something a lot of people never bother to consider (you can easily test this in a Good Guys store for yourself).

      • I appreciate your feedback.

Powering up isn't a big deal for me and I just get a Chromecast to use as my OS so I was more wondering which is better for picture quality and future proofing.

  • $410 for 10" wow….

    • I'd pay that for 10"… Hang on, wrong forum.

  • I'm in Malaysia at the in-laws and using a sharp tv bought a few years ago.. man it is pretty average and I can't turn off motion smoothing. Also stopped getting software updates after 2 years (last update Feb 2021)

    • +1

      can't turn off motion smoothing

      it's under Advance tab

      • -1

I've turned off everything on this tv and can't shake it.. some other comments online suggest this is true on some sharp models. Hopefully doesn't apply to new models.

    • I’d not changed my settings, for my 70” I changed:

Digital Noise Reduction - changed to: Auto

MPEG NR - changed to: Off

      HOME > Settings > Device Preferences > Picture > Advanced Video > ________

  • Rtings havent reviewed this? cant find that model number on google search

    • +1

Definitely finding links to customer reviews on Google and Bing here.
Best to see the reviews on the Good Guys site as they can only be posted after making a purchase, so they are verified product users.
Alternatively a couple of reviews on Product Review which look to be verified also (I never bother looking at unverified reviews personally).
As for Rtings, not sure, I've never used it; are they based in the USA? If so this model isn't in the USA, it's for the Asia Pacific region.

      • +1

I agree it was a challenge to find reviews.
Heaps of confirmed purchases reviewed the tellies on The Good Guys website.

60’ model, 4.5/5 stars and has 50 verified purchases, 85% of reviewers recommend this product.

70’ model, 4.5/5 stars and has 37 verified purchases, 91% of reviewers recommend this product.

  • +4

We asked for the best price in store and got the 60" version for $855.

  • how does this compare to TCL C635 series?

  • +3

People are getting mixed up. Yes Sharp Japan still exist and are still operational as Sharp before. But are majority is owned by foxconn which is good to have such backing.

So no, Sharp are not a carcass brand where another company buys up the remnants and uses the brand name to badge crap. Or reassurcts the brand but is not the same company it used to be (ie Ryobi).

    • +3

100% spot on hence my comment:

These televisions are 100% Sharp products, not 're-badged' Chinese products like other well known brands: Phillips, Toshiba, Hitachi, JVC, AKAI, TEAC, Seiki, etc.

  • +2

High end Dell laptops (Precisions and I believe XPS) are using Sharp Igzo panels. And you can tell straight way the picture quality is amazing. I believe the Ipad Pros are also using Igzo sharp panels too.

    • +2

Microsoft Surface devices also use Sharp Igzo panels.

      • +1

Oh nice, I didn't know that.
