  • get this or wait for potentially better deals boxing day?

    • Last year Boxing deals weren't great.

  • Also, would this drive 2 external displays via a USB-C dock?

  • +2

If ram wasnt soldered it would be a sweeter deal.

    • Yeah, pity

      • 90% of laptops at this price range LOL

        • +1

Wouldn't mind 8GB soldered and 8GB stick which would allow upgrade to 40GB.

          • @TheTwo: Me too, don't worry!

I got this so cheap tho, that if I need a PC or something for my music I can build a desktop for 1k-1.5k

            Otherwise I need a M1 pro.

Most which upgrade ram get bunky, or have performance issues.
            Can't win!

This model across the range has pretty good reviews

  • +1

    I bought it!

I got gift cards from fellow member here $540 for $600 and he gave me bonus $17 GC!

I had $150 GC form Google pixel deal
    Cost me $540 + $47! + my $150 GC
Around $750(Excluding my Bonus $150 HN GC)

I bought 2 laptops in last 12 months and gave them away, I'll finally stick with this.

CPU looks good compared to m2 air and 6800! The price is amazing tho, $750!

    • +1

      Can i be your friend?

      • +1

        Haha

I did give one to a fellow member here, and returned the other.

  • Would anyone recommend this as a travel laptop where I can edit photos and videos?

    • Battery whilst better than some others in this price range, can be a limiting factor dependant on your use case. If Apple is an option, a MacBook Air might net you some extra screen time. All of this is redundant if you carry power banks though!

      • Apple is king in many ways, but a new m2 air is nearly double the price.

        • Yeah it’s too steep for comparison. Maarten a M1 Air could still do the job
If they can stretch budget a smidge. But yeah this with a power bank would still suit

        • Apple is Queen & the Queen is dead ;)
So many options for much less & hardware gets outdated so quickly.

        • Have they finally fixed adobe apps with m core laptops yet?

    • Get an Asus Zenbook or MSI Prestige

  • +2

    51Wh battery though…

12th gen 28w cpus are very good, unlike the H35 chips from 11th gen where its an upclocked 15w 4 cores, these are cut back H45 chipss (mainly in L3 cache and I think pcie lanes etc) that have plenty of cores for all your multitasking needs.

  • Waiting for a good gaming laptop sale for boxing day.

    • Get this + Game Pass from Microsoft, problem solved.

      • Not sure it'll play much from game pass!

        • Nah, it's perfect for game pass. Only a handful of games are modern gen enough that it can't be played 30fps 720p. And even those games can be used with fsr.

          • @Wonderfool: Nah, GPU is too weak to really benefit from GamePass. 512GB SSD which means another external SSD or HDD will be needed.

            • @netsurfer: We can agree to disagree. 12th gen XE is similar to vega peformance at equal class, and I'm familiar with vega 6, which can output very similar to optimised switch performance at 15W.

At 28W, games like doom eternal can run very close to 60fps on 720p, Witcher 3 can play 40 fps lock at 720p, even god of war can be played at 30fps 720p at the occasional stutter. Majority of the games in gamepass is not anymore difficult to run than these games.

And since the screen is 2k, it'll have perfect interger scaling at 720p.

Aside from the very unoptimised games like Sable, I think this is very sufficient for gamepass.

              • @Wonderfool: 720p gaming, really? Also, mostly old games.
If an OZBer wants to get a gaming laptop, let the OZBer gets a gaming laptop.

                • @netsurfer: Buddy, aside from Plague Requirem, nothing in game pass currently is harder to run than god of war.

By all means, if they want a gaming laptop, they can get a gaming laptop. But the specific comment I was replying to was about gamepass, which majority of the games are old games. That's why I've said it's perfect for game pass.

                  And yes, 720p. On a 13 inch 1440p screen, it'll long decent.

                  • @Wonderfool: There are newer games on GamePass. God of war is not in GamePass, Flight Simulator is. I don't see any point playing Forza Horizon 5 on 720p.

This laptop just isn't suitable for serious PC gaming. Witcher 3 @ 720p/40fps… really? That's what PC gaming should be like in 2022?

                    • @netsurfer: Oh right, flight sim. The most niche genre there is.

Look, again, we can agree to disagree. I've owned a dozen portable devices, from handheld pcs to pocketable Linux sbc devices, to full fledged gaming laptops. The one I pick up is always the only that can squeeze 4 hour SOT without being plugged to the wall, even if there's fidelity sacrifice. My winmax 2 is my current main gamepass machine, not my Xbox series S nor my fully built gaming pc, especially not my 1650 laptop that needs 50w minimum.

And in my eyes, no matter the year, 720p is fine. Perhaps you should try it too, you'll find it's alot less offensive than you think it is. Switch is popular for a reason

Edit: just so you know, Forza 5 is pretty good on low end when it comes to visual fidelity tech. It is good at fooling our brains with lighting and motion blur, making it look smooth at 30fps.

Edit again: oh, and, merry Christmas. Have a good one.

  • Seems like the OW laptop is a bit different, only got 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi 5 while the HN got wifi 6?

    • It also says HVN has a better camera 5MP vs 720p

  • Can I install Windows 10 on this laptop without a new product key? I heard windows 11 is worse than 10?

    • +1

      Yes.

Create a windows media tool (with USB) that you can download from Microsoft themselves. Boot to USB on the laptop and run through the process of installing windows 10.

Fresh install is the only way to go from windows 11 to 10 at the moment (and likely ever).

Keep in mind that your machine will likely prompt you to upgrade to windows 11 as the machine is compatible.

There are multiple ways to stop the windows 11 update notification. From a professional view point i don't recommend them, but with a bit of googling you'll be able to work it out.

  • +1

    Thanks op, got one.

  • Good deal. Waiting for a 15/16" though.

  • +3

This could be better as a laptop, has a GTX 1650, but the screen is 1080p no the 1400p

Buy first think later, best deal for laptop of the year.

  • +1

Thanks, headed to Officeworks and grab one. When checked out still show $1298, but they are happy to make it to $815 after I showed then the website price.

    • Did you get the same laptop with HN? I mean is it HP pavilion plus 14? Seems like they are different models, OW laptop got 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi 5 while the HN got wifi 6.

  • 111+ votes but it still didn't go OOS. Amazing!

    • +1

      Yes it’s telling

Stuff is just not selling after everyone went nuts buying computer stuff during covid?

  • Someone asked a good question and I'm curious too

    Thunderbolt.

What are the cons of not having this? What won't someone be able to do that someone with Thunderbolt port can?

    • They get to say "i have thunderbolt".

But no seriously, it just allows for higher transfer speeds. Meaning faster rates of data transfer, as well as higher resolution monitors being connected.

    • +1

It's mainly that 40Gbps support. Basically, you cannot use an external enclosure that's able to do ~3000MBps. However, it is not really a big deal because the laptop supports PCIe gen 4 NVMe SSD, so the internal SSD could go up to ~7000MBps. The only other feature you miss out is PCIe tunneling (i.e. using an external graphics card via Thunderbolt).

I wouldn't worry about it unless you already have a Thunderbolt monitor and/or a Thunderbolt hub. Cheap Thunderbolt enclosures (i.e. ~$70 AUD just for the enclosure itself) are all gone, you now have to pay for the dual chipset ones (which cost ~$150AUD each).

      • So can this HP handle 4k monitor at 60hz and another monitor says fhd at 60hz?

        • The included / embedded GPU is capable of:

          • 4K / 60Hz for the HDMI output
          • Up to 8K / 60Hz for the USB-C/alt-mode output (if HP elect to wire it properly, but even if HP elected not to, then it should at least handle 4K / 60Hz)
          • Internal display is able to support 4K / 120Hz (However, I think HP only offers one that does 2K / 90Hz OLED from what I read, as an upgrade).

          I think 4K / 60Hz + Full HD @ 60Hz should be easy for the laptop.

  • This vs MacBook Air M1? I can’t decide

    • If you want battery life get the M1. Unfortunately Intel 12th gen battery life is very average on current gen laptops. If you need Windows or Linux O/S laptop, with good battery life, get something that is AMD Ryzen based.

      • Thanks, I think I’ll hold out for a good M1 deal.

    • +1

They are not in the same price point. It depends on what you want. Macbook Air M1 only has 2 ports and both Thunderbolt/USB-C ports (well, you do get a headphone jack as well). M1 is more power efficient.

If you are deep in Apple eco-system, then a Mac works better with other Apple devices. This Windows laptop one appears to quite well priced.

    Thanks Op, pulled the trigger

  • The webcam can be used to login to windows? As no fingerprint i hope it can

    • its not windows hello capable

  • Missed it :(

    • Officeworks may still have it?

      • Says out of stock at both office and harvey

  • Most reviews are with oled.
Maybe battery will be better with this ips.

  • Gerry sold us Professionals out (again). lol

Still at Joyce Mayne (HN by another name) for same price as of 11:09pm. https://www.joycemayne.com.au/hp-pavilion-14-inch-i5-1240p-1… I think I managed to get one of the last HN ones, so thanks OP.

    • How?

      • Asked the guy to do a better price…

        • you mind share the receipt?

  • You guys reckon computing hardware prices will go up soon with China have a run of its covid cases??

Just purchased from Domayne too, just in case that helps someone. Only available for delivery, no pickup options except in Dubbo. Also get the 10% back in gift cards, for what that is worth!

    • +1

      Thanks deal updated

    • Gift card is only valid tomorrow. Not today according the terms.

      • Hmmm, that's interesting, you might be right but I actually did an online live chat with a Domayne CSR who specifically told me about the gift card offer, and that was yesterday. And it was in bold red print at the time of purchase. Pretty sneaky if they won't honour it!

  • So how much is this laptop usually?

    • +1

Could easily price $1000-1200 to me.

HN just called me, apparently there's only the 1 unit.

Box has been open, but the seal on the laptop is sealed.
I don't really have a choice, as no other units.

He said someone may of looked at it just to feel the weight, I spose I need to discuss double check any accessories etc

    • ask for further discount as it is opened

      • Already paid tho 😂

I spose I could ask for a gift card?

  • none left

  • I’ve actually had a shipped notice tonight, on Boxing Day of all days!
Edit: I got mine from HN

  • +1

Anyone played around with it yet?

  • +2

I got the model from Officeworks today.
It actually has the 5mp camera according to the box which is great. The website stated 720p which is pretty pretty ordinary.

After 15 minutes it feels like a solid laptop. Great specs for $815.

  • Display stock still available at HN Liverpool (NSW).

    • You mean orange grove, right?
      Still same full price?

      • Can't help sorry. Picked up last one at HN Broadway. The alternative was ex-display at Liverpool.

  • So… did anyone else got the backorder email?

  • Any recommended hard cases for this model? To be used for high school so a durable case needed. Thanks.

  • Picked it up today, had a $1599 or $1699 sticker on it 🤐

I haven't played around with it yet, I have to save all my Chrome tabs on a 3rd party and then transfer it over.

Is wifi the easier to transfer laptop to laptop?

    • +1

you can set all the existing open chrome tab as "startup tab" under your google account
then when you login to the new laptop with the same google account, open chrome and voila all the tabs will open automatically

      • I dont have that many stabs atm, i used extensions on firefox, and chrome(session buddy) to save tabs - i assume it saves it in the chrome folder somewhere

Just little things, like I have office 2013 paid. Im not sure if i can transfer it, it seems now people rent office? lol..
        Thanks for the tips tho!

  • Set it up

So weird coming from Windows 7 😂

To be honest, it doesn't feel that much faster? Task manager says already using 30% ram straight out the box…wtf?

    Does anyone remove any software?

    • God yeah I’ve removed about half of it so far. All the trial stuff, office, McAfee etc. stupid bloody apps that were pre loaded like TikTok etc, lots of stuff I’ll never use.

      • Wow hp is chinese now

      • TikTok

LOL. Nuke that shit from orbit.

      • Yeah, I think the gamehub takes up a bit of ram for doing nothing 😂

  • +2

Hey everyone, make sure you jump online and check your warranty status of the laptop. Mine showed up as starting July 15th this year and running out September 12 next year, so I have put in a dispute with HP to get that amended.

    • How do we check? Thanks for the tip!
