Red Bull Mobile: Samsung Galaxy Nexus $665 with 365 Days of Unlimited Talk and Text + 5GB/Month

490

Though the price for the Galaxy Nexus keeps on going down ($400 currently), $665 seems like a reasonable price for 1 years worth of unlimited calls and text and 5GB data per month.

Similar to this deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71348

Essentially the phone will cost you $300 and the prepaid recharge of $365.

Unfortunately it uses the Vodafone network, which may not be great for some, though this phone should be able to use the 850 network.

There are cheaper overall alternatives such as purchasing outright and Liveconnected $11/pm Tribe plans, however for unlimited calls and text, it seems rather reasonable. Note that data is charged in 250kb increments unfortunately.

Edit: It's 250kB increments.

They have the Galaxy Y for $100 ($465 all up) which is very cheap.

I see the Galaxy Nexus is due for JellyBean very soon.

    • Mine updated to jellybean today :)

      • what is yours?

    • +2

I did it for you to fulfill your urge. :P

  • -2

Wow, 250kb increments! That would suck for keeping your stuff synced!

    • -3

You clearly have no understanding of how the internet works.

      • I hardly think "no understanding" equates to "not comprehensive understanding". What's the smallest packet that can be sent, mr genius? Is it 250kb?

        • +5

jazoom, jelko's being a little rude there… but you're actually confusing kb (kilobit) with kB (kilobyte)

I agree, 250 kB would be huge… but 250 kb is actually quite small.

        • Well, he was definitely being rude, but I was under the assumption that a kb (lower case) is 1/8 of a kB. That still sounds like a decent amount to me (especially with using Juice Defender, as I mentioned below). I assume that would add up over the course of a month. Granted, it might not quite cause an issue if the limit is as high as 5GB.

At least its not as bad as Optus pre-paid. I think theirs is 1mb increments?

        • +1

But it's per session (on Woolworths at least), so based on OzBargainer's feedback from end of last year, it's a non-issue. I signed up then & haven't had any issues.

        • +2

          A packet isn't a session mate.

        • No kidding. The point is, a session can be smaller than 250kb. It can be much smaller. But it's not going to be smaller than a packet.

        • +5

I can barely use up the 5GB on Woolies mobile at 1MB increments…

        • +1

"Data is calculated in 250KB sessions."
          http://www.redbullmobile.com.au/pre-paid/prepaid-plans/

I don't think anyone measures data in bits (these days)…

        • +1

The way telcos define their "increment" shenanigans is vague and open to multiple interpretations. It's impossible to know what you're signing up to simply by a careful reading of the fine print - you need to either actually use the service or ask others who have and carefully examined their usage.

In Red Bull's case, the statement "Data is calculated in 250KB sessions." doesn't make much sense IMHO, even though I think I know what they're trying to say. One view might be that 500MB worth of uploads/downloads in one "session" would only count as 250KB - patently ridiculous to a tech savvy person, but a reasonable literal interpretation.

        • Same here… I have all my accounts and email syncing all the time… and still have about 4GB left over at the end of the renewal period.

    • +3

I believe it counts as long as you keep the session open, which your phone does by default. It should only get rounded up to the nearst 250KB if you lose data coverage (hurrr Vodafone) or if you move to WiFi and your phone closes the data session.

    • +5

It's a per session, not per packet limit.

It means if connect for a few minutes and you use 1Kb, 100Kb, 249Kb you'll be charged/use 250Kb
If you connect for several hours and use 150.2Mb you'll be charged for 150.25Mb

      Telstra (prepaid) do 1Mb increments.

      • Yeh, I use Juice Defender on my phone, which cuts out mobile data every time the screen goes off to save battery. This is why I don't like the sound of this.

        • 5gb is a lot, I watch youtube at the bus stop and have it downloading my podcasts, it isn't my only source of internet though.

    • so far listening radio around 6 hours/day browsing and checking email, hardly use the 5 GB from dodo, so far just 2 GB

If only they allowed tethering on the iphone

    • +11

maybe you should get an android :)
      iPhone's and it's non-opensourceness :(

      • +2

I tethered when I had an iPhone? And you can also use it as a wireless hotspot…

      • +2

No need for a neg. I'm simply stating a fact. I am using this prepaid red bull sim in my iPhone 4s and you can't tether. I'm merely informing people so someone doesn't lock themselves in a 12 month plan and find they cant use their data as they would have liked.

        • you can tether fine on a galaxy nexus, even if the T&C say otherwise. Nothing actually stops you doing it on the phone.

        • I know but I'm referring to the iPhone 4S http://www.redbullmobile.com.au/pre-paid/help-support/handseā€¦
Other than that this is a great plan

        • I am having trouble tethering from my phone too. i used to tether with optus all the time but rebdull only worked for 1 hour then they cut me off

  • +1

Can it still be unlocked using Vodafone website for free? ;P

  • +4

From the redbull page: "External Memory: MicroSD support up to 32 GB".

it certainly does not support microSD cards at all.

    • +1

yeah I noticed that….at least vodafone check Gsmarena when posting their data (although sometimes they mis read it)

    • haha, yeah… literally says "Super AMOLED HD (720 x 1280 pixels)" then JUST under, says "Resolution: 480 x 800"… clearly didn't check their facts here yea.

  • Guys, does anyone know any good deal for Redbull 60 days prepaid? I'm kicking myself that I didn't get the $22 deal from bp blah!

  • +1

Just remember that the phone price is effectively $96 more than the stated price, as the 365 day access has $100 Gift Card for extra $4.

The 60 day access is cheaper per day, so cheapest available way to try the network.

If anyone is interested in Red Bull Mobile for data only, I am currently accessing internet using Red Bull Mobile (RBM) on an unlocked USB dongle (unlocked Crazy Johns Huawei modem cheapest model, 2 years ago) - Got the BP $22 8GB deal. The RBM tech guy said he couldn't guarantee it would work (nor offered to provide any tech support as it is not a supported 'model'). I'm now surfing at a decent speed.

    Settings used:
    APN: purtona.wap
    Phone: *99#

Please note: The current Vodaphone lite modems (Coles specials 3G for $25) do not recognise the RBM simcard. So, don't think you can use one of the those and get away with it. It didn't work for me.

    • This is valuable information, thanks!

  • i was gonna post the same deal i saw few days ago. but the actual cost of the phone works out to be 400 because if you buy the 365 pack you get a free phone or $100 dse gift card. good deal none the less.

  • Has anyone used redbull mobile so far? any reviews?

I'm not sure if this is a decent deal with good bang for the buck…

    • I've had a few dropped calls here and there, but with unlimited calls it doesn't cost anything to call them back, the pocket wi-fi mode on my HTC explorer isn't a bit spotty, but I've been able to watch youtube and stuff on it.

    • They use Vodafone intrastructure. In other words, it is not very good, drop outs and bad receptions even in Port Melbourne.

Their customer service is horrible, so beware!

  • I've used them for 2 months now - vodafone & telstra are the only two providers that give coverage at my work. I used to be with Optus. :)

Customer service IS terrible, but thankfully I've only had to call them a few times. Other than that it's been good so far!

And yes reception can be very bad, all depends on where you live and where you go. At work it's perfect (which is what I really need it for), at home it's OK - it'll make & receive calls etc. I use wi-fi with my mobile at home.

  • Is anyone still able to access the site? The whole site seems down…
