  • Is it worth skipping this one for the series 8?

    • +22

No, its quite the opposite i think. The series 8 only had a few new features such as crash detection and some tempreature sensor thing. not worth the premium over the series 7 imo

      • +5

Crash detection most likely annoying unless you are actually in one 😂

        • +1

Saw a post from a marine rescue type service that was encouraging boaties to understand how to cancel the crash detection.
Apparently some manoeuvres (eg, going over waves) can trigger the watch to think it was involved in a crash, then the emergency services get notified and a whole bunch of time and money gets wasted if people haven't cancelled it soon enough.

Agree that the 7 is looking like better value at the moment than the 8.

          • +1

@clintdb: Roller coasters too - although there may have been a firmware update to did that.

          • @clintdb: Same thing for rollercoasters and skiing, they all set it off with the rapid changes in movement, pain in the arse.

        • Crash detection calls 000 for you, leaving the speaker open for you to hear/talk. If its not a crash you can easily talk to the operator and say, sorry its called you in error.

          • +3

@tars19: But you wouldn’t know you’ve called it a lot of the time. You’re driving your boat, you plow into a big wave, watch vibrates and dials 000, you don’t feel it or hear it because you’re (profanity) hammering that tinny.

Operator just hears loud crashing sounds. Army called in. They realise it’s at sea and out of their remit. Navy gets involved. Airforce maybe. It’s just chaos

    • Get the 8 for a senior citizen or if you are one
      Otherwise 7

      • +10

7 can still do fall detect etc

Source I fell down the stairs and it tried to call emergency. I was fine though. My knee will probably never be the same again though

  • +9

bought this last week ended up at 382 with some gift cards and a perks. well and truely worth it the body is more black then green imo its just the band that stands out and can easily be changed.

    • Same but I was lucky to get it in blue price matching Amazon before it ran out of stock - using my coles 15% off gift cards. The blue is actually quite nice!

  • +6

I have one. The watch itself is dark green(look like black). Can match with any Apple bands:)

  • Is there any discount on JB gift card now? Coles ? Woolies?

    • +1

woolies have the 10% ultimate card, but not sure if u'll find any stock of that card. Even if u get hold of the card, you can use it in-store only, cannot do split payment using the ultimate card online.

      • Not true. You can use it online too at JB Hi-Fi, just did it myself.

        • how did you do it? I was trying to pay for something $600 ish n had a few $50 ultimate cards n was told you can do split payment online. Also, you cannot redeem jbhifi gift cards online using the ultimate card.

          • @shanlee: Not sure if there is a difference between new and old cards. I just bought it from Woolworths yesterday, I chose a "Teen" card. But I enter the details into the JB Hi-Fi payment section as if it is a credit card and it works.

        • How? I couldn’t do it myself. Your cart amount has to be less than your ultimate gift card amount right?

          • @Nick K: Yes, my cart was less than the GC amount. Because payment goes through as a credit card, I don't know if you can do it for more than the amount on the card and split payments, but I assume you must be able to otherwise you'd never be able to use up the full value unless you matched to the cent.

            • +1

@hunter_syd: if ur cart is less than the GC, you can do it. otherwise you cannot. no split payment using the ultimate card.
I tried to buy jbhifi gift cards using the ultimate cards n it worked 4 times, but got rejected for later purchases. Ended up going to the store n paying for the item. Poor lady at the counter, had to swipe all the GCs n scan a few jb hifi cards.

              • @shanlee: At my woolworths they had like a variable value GC - so you can choose the value on the card up to $500, so I didn't need to do like 10 x $50 cards, luckily.

              • +2

@shanlee: Their fraud detection system will cancel subsequent orders once you have purchased few of them but I think it only does it for the day and you can repeat it the next day

  • +2

Same price on Amazon - although no stock, available on backorder.

I have had the series 7 (which I sold off for more than 500 a while back), and now the 8. I'd just go back to the 7 - there's basically no difference except for resell value. At $450 - the difference in resell value becomes proportionally the same, if not better with the 7.

  • +2

Got this + black thin strap and black case from Amazon delivered in one day. Now looks like a black watch but scored a good discount
Case and strap cost like $20

  • Hi, can I insert a simcard in it and use it like a mobile phone?

If not, Is there any smart watch that can a take simcard inside

    • +1

You can on apple watches but not this one..

You need to get one with cellular

      • Can It work independently from my iPhone. Lets say i buy a prepaid sim from coles and insert the sim in my applewatch 8 series?

        • +1

Not possible on any Apple Watch to insert a SIM. You need to buy an Apple Watch GPS+Cellular. Also only works with postpaid Telstra, Optus and Vodafone plans unfortunately.

        • +2

All Apple Watches don’t have a SIM card slot so no.
It works off an eSIM concept which I believe is only provided through Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Woolworths, Kogan, Gomo, Amaysim, Lebara, Felix and Truphone (at this time).

          • +1

@pOint01: Just checked out Truphone and they have $99 per year (or $10 per month) Watch only service on 4G Unlimited data/voice etc but on a new phone number that is provided.

          • @pOint01: I thought it was just postpaid with Telstra, Vodafone and Optus if you want to link to your Iphone number? I'd love for Boost to be Apple Watch capable.

            • @mitch21: Some prepaid have it now and Boost along with Aldi and Belong should offer eSIMs soon too.

        • As mentioned here, Truphone are the only ones who provide a service for a cellular apple watch to run independantly to a phone (Family mode). Truphone uses the Vodaphone network.

  • I got the series 7 shortly after the 8 was announced. There's nothing you'll miss from the 8. The always on display feature of this (over the SE models) is well worth the extra cost imo.

    • +1

I hope the ‘always on’ feature is available in the next update.

    • +1

I personally don't like the always on display

      • whaaaaaat

        why not

      • They should just add it as an on/off toggle in settings. No brainer.

        • This is how it works btw, you can set it on or off. But you still pay more for the option.

          • @narcoleptic-haze: Yes, but it should be a standard on all models. Not sure if people pay premium purely for this option?

            • -1

              @pOint01:

but it should be a standard on all models

if everything you wanted was standard on the cheapest model, why would anyone buy the more expensive models? Your comment makes no sense

              • -2

                @andresampras: What a dumbass comment.
This is a very small software feature. I would be expecting to pay extra for hardware related upgrades or design.

    • How is the battery life with AOD?

      • I don’t use it extensively but I can get 2 days out of a charge. Honestly it’s not that bad considering the size of these devices.

  • +3

series 6 44mm was $328 a few days ago in Silver with White strap at JB HIFI

    • Yes, I saw that too. Was looking for that but its gone now.

  • +4

Any chance of a leak of Jb Hi-fi boxing day sales catalogue this time around?

  • Anyone know if it's possible to stack this deal with 5x $100 ultimate gift cards (home)?

    • Yes

      • I tried to enter the gift cards online but am having difficulties, how would I go about doing this?

        • Buy in store?

          .

          • @w1nthrophy: No stock in store within 200km of my chosen store :/ I guess I'll have to wait until an instore deal unless there's some loophole

            • +2

@chickenwoohoo: Buy jbhifi gift cards instore with your Ultimate gift cards and then buy online. There is no limit on how many jbhifi gift cards you can use online.

              • @TechNerd: Thanks @TechNerd I tried to go to my local JB HIFI (Keysborough VIC) to buy JB HIFI Gift cards, and they said I'm not allowed to… does it depend on the manager present?

                • @chickenwoohoo: Technically it is against JB Hi Fi policy, but I havent had any issues yet doing this and and I think most Jb Hi Fi staff knew what I was doing.

Maybe try another store. And also when you go the counter, tell them that you are paying by card or credit card. Dont tell them you are paying by using an Ultimate gift card because they might just get confused.

You can also try adding the ultimate gift cards to apple wallet/google pay/ samsung pay and just tap and pay at the counter to be more stealthy. If you have multiple ultimate gift cards (i.e 5 x $100) tell them you would like to do a split transaction of $100 each.

                  • @TechNerd: Thanks heaps for the help. I'll give it a crack later today and let you know how it goes! :-)

                    • @chickenwoohoo: Please let me know how it goes, will like to try this too

                      • +1

@Bik: Hey @Bik I had trouble adding the gift card to my apple wallet. But I went to another local JB HIFI with one $100 gift card to test if it works. I managed to get $100 JB HIFI Gift card - just say you're paying by card and depending on the cashier/manager they don't really look. Will have to do 4x more $100 - I'll let you know how that goes soon.

        • Think it's 1 gift card per transaction online.. sorry
