There are actually two types of physical Ultimate gift cards being sold at Coles (and some other brick and mortar retailers), and both types would be included in this deal:

      • EFTPOS: these have a smaller set of participating retailers than the one outlined in OP's table, can only be redeemed instore, cannot be exchange for a gift card through the Ultimate gift card website, and cannot be added to a mobile wallet. This version is being phased out.

      • Visa: these have the full set of participating retailers as outlined in OP's table, can be redeemed instore or online (depending on how the participating retailer accepts it), can be exchange for a retailer's own gift card through the Ultimate gift card website (depending on whether the participating retailer allows this), and can be added to a mobile wallet.

There are a number of ways you distinguish between the two, including:

      • Gift card number: the EFTPOS version starts with 502125, whereas the Visa version starts with 457284.

      • Card network logos: the EFTPOS version has the EFTPOS logo on it, whereas the Visa version does not have any card network logo (presumably because Blackhawk Network is too cheap to pay the licensing fee for including the Visa logo on the gift card).

      • Packaging: the EFTPOS version has the gift card sitting on top of the packaging, whereas the Visa version has the gift card hiding inside the gift card packaging.

      • Participating retailer logos: the EFTPOS version has participating retailer logos printed on the physical card, whereas the Visa version has the participating retailer logos printed on the packaging.

If you are more of a visual person, if you look at this photo, the gift card on the left is the EFTPOS version and the gift card on the right is the Visa version.

@WookieMonster did you ever tried to buy any gift card using another gift card at office works and if so any idea how many office works gift cards can be used online per single transaction? Thanks in advance.

        • +2

I have in the past and it worked instore, but it has been a few weeks since I have last done that, so there is always a chance Officeworks has blocked this. You cannot use any Officeworks gift cards online, btw. You can apparently use up to 1x Ultimate gift card in one Officeworks online transaction, but I've also heard reports that Officeworks may or may not actually accept it online.

          • +1
          • +2

@WookieMonster: I think officeworks online is a bit like Target in the sense that they are overly cautious about credit card fraud and like to stop perfectly legitimate orders from going through. Simply ridiculous.

      • I bought ultimate everyone from woolie , it can load viarable amount up to $500, what card is this?

      • -5

CAn you add to the wallet for both?

        • +2

You can add the Visa version to a mobile wallet, but you cannot add the EFTPOS version to a mobile wallet (as outlined in my comment).

        • Mate do you even read?

          • +1

@ShouldIBuyIt: Spoon feeding in the long term teaches nothing but the shape of the spoon.

      • +1

Good info, are you working for them thus know this subtle difference? Genuine question. And well done in getting this info out there

        • +6

That’s a fair enough question, but I do not work for any party related to Blackhawk Network.

I’m just a regular person who has seen a number of people burnt recently because they were intending to purchase the a Visa version, but ended up with the EFTPOS version without realising until it was too late. I thought it would be good to remind people about this.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks for your reply; with the VISA one; what would be the advantages? you can use it anywhere? the ability to top-up?
            Thanks

            • +7

@BigLeviathan: Advantages of the Visa version (as I see it):

              • Participating retailers are updated for each Ultimate (Visa) gift card on a semi-regular basis. The participating retailers of the EFTPOS version has not been updated since about June 2021.

              • The Visa version has many more participating retailers than the EFTPOS version.

              • You can add the Visa version to a mobile wallet. You cannot add the EFTPOS version to a mobile wallet.

              • Some participating retailers allow you to redeem the Visa version on their website, and some participating retailers also allow you to exchange the Visa version for the retailer’s own digital gift card. Neither is possible with the EFTPOS version.

              • If an instore purchase is paid for with the Visa version and is subsequently refunded, the refund can be processed back on the same gift card, which can remove some of the hassle of handling refunds. With the EFTPOS version, it is up to the merchant how they refund you (e.g. onto a bank card, onto their own gift card).

              • @WookieMonster: @WookieMonster At Woolies, I noticed two different variations of the Ultimate GC - one just mentions Heritage Bank on the reverse side, and the other mentions Blackhawk Networks (and has various wallet logos at the top left corner).

What's the deal with the former type? Are they still managed by Blackhawk Networks?

        • @WookieMonster is def not "a regular person". They are God tier+ level. I've never experienced someone so surgical with their info 🙌🏾 All Hail

      • Will the older version still be accepted in the new list of retailers? I called the cards customer care and he said it should not matter. Have you or anyone used it at the retailers not on the packaging but in the new list ? I understand I still can't use it online, but at least if accepted in store it would be fine for me.

        • +1

I honestly do not know, because I have not been able to test this myself.

It is unusual to see an Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift card these days at Coles (at least in my recent experience), plus I don’t really have a need for any of the participating retailers officially permitted on any of the Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift cards I have seen at Coles recently (i.e. Him, Her, Style).

I would personally play it safe and say you cannot use an Ultimate Him (EFTPOS) gift card at JB Hi-Fi (as an example), because that is what the Ultimate gift card website for the EFTPOS version says.

Maybe someone else can shed some light.

      • Apologies if I have missed it as this is a long thread. Are the Home cards a special exception? They do not follow your guidelines.

There are actually two types of physical Ultimate gift cards being sold at Coles (and some other brick and mortar retailers), and both types would be included in this deal:
Gift card number: the EFTPOS version starts with 502125, whereas the Visa version starts with 457284.
If you are more of a visual person, if you look at this photo, the gift card on the left is the EFTPOS version and the gift card on the right is the Visa version.

I have 2 different Ultimate Home Cards. They both start with 457284, they both have the card inside the packaging, both have Blackhawk Network Australia on the card, both fronts of the physical cards look identical and they both look very similar with the most noticeable difference being the newer cards have the apple/google logo on the outer pack.

All of the non apple/google logo cards (10/21) worked no problem with adding to mobile wallet with 12/29 expiry. None of the apple/google logo cards (06/22) will add to mobile wallet giving some different errors such as the card isn't supported yet or there was a problem.

I went in making sure to check for the 457284 number and the physical card packaging, I must have missed this next bit.

Are there any options or are they not able to be added to the wallet?

        Thanks

        • Works for me adding Everyone GC entering 12/29 as the expiry date regardless the packaging says 06/22.

      • The Ultimate card I have the number starts with 457824. I assume there is just an error in the above info but want to check before I buy anymore.

  • +3

    Again???

    • +4

      Last time it was TCN.

  • +1

Disappointing there is no SuperCheap. or eBay options.

    • +6

If you purchase a physical Ultimate Him gift card with the Supercheap Auto logo on the packaging, you can use it at Supercheap Auto.

Keep in mind that Supercheap Auto is being phased out of the Ultimate gift card scheme, so there will be a point in the future where physical Ultimate Him gift cards will no longer have the Supercheap Auto logo on the packaging (and those types of Ultimate Him gift cards will not be redeemable at Supercheap Auto). Having said that, I have not seen a physical Ultimate Him gift card without a Supercheap Auto logo on the packaging; even physical Ultimate Him gift cards manufactured in June 2022 (which is the latest batch I have seen being sold at brick and mortar retailers) has the Supercheap Auto logo.

Oh yeah, eBay is not part of the Ultimate gift card scheme.

    • +1

I now have quite a few HIM cards that have supercheap as one of the retailers. Though the customer care executive said, the card could still be used at other retailers evem of they are not on the packaging but are on the website, I am yet to test it. If it works, I will keep them, if not I might just sell them to someone.

      • probably good grounds to get a refund

  • +3

    Aldi, do the amazon again!

    • No gift cards in the next Aldi catalogue.

  • Awesome

  • +7

@dealbot You forgot to bold JB, OW and EB games. Great deal.

    • +1

      Not bothered.

      • +4

        Fair enough.
By this point I think most of us know these are only good for JB, OW, and EB Games.

  • here we go again

  • +6

Um… Maybe I should go and buy some this time!

    • LOL - I was thinking the same.

    • +1

Assuming you can find them at your local Coles

Did anyone get any sent yet.

@dealbot You're a bloody legend mate. You've saved me so much money this year with your postings that you deserve an award for best service to the OzBargain community. Thank you!

    • +4

      Get ready to be negged.

      • +7

Gotta spend money to save money

    • +8

and WookieMonster for the info on how to take advantage of these offers.

      • +4

Yes indeed… I had forgotten all the work that WookieMonster did with the Coles Prepaid Mastercards and info about what can and can't be accepted by the checkouts of the major stores etc. Two all-round very helpful and cluey contributors to OzBargain.

        • +2

Having answered questions in the past on matters I have some knowledge about, but nowhere near the level of WookieMonster I know that it is actually amazingly time-consuming.

        • Sorry I’m late into this! But are there deals on the Coles Prepaid Mastercard? I keep reading that people seem to have loads of stash of it.

          • @joe900joe: There were… back in mid to late October when they were 10% off. They usually go on sale twice per year so it may be quite a while before you see them discounted again (likely well into 2023, but stranger things have happened). Being a prepaid credit card (as opposed to a gift card) they are very handy and can be used when buying discounted gift cards (Aldi had Amazon gift cards at 10% off recently and I purchased those with my already discounted Coles prepaid Mastercards. I did the same with the Apple Gift Cards when they were 10% off.

  • +1

    Wow, again what's going on

  • +7

Will be skipping this one. Good luck everyone and have fun dealing with the snarky Coles staff guarding the self checkouts like they get a commission per customer they manage to piss off

    • +7

I mean its a good thing Coles staff guarding the gift cards. If not, there will be 1 people stand by at 6 am who probably will take everything from the shelves.

      • Very true, Coles staff had cleared them up, the remainder only thanks, home

    • +1

"Are you getting scammed, who are you buying these for, you can only get 5"

  • +2

But the senior staff will prevent you overbuy, good luck hunting for gift cards

    • -4

They really need to keep them at the service desk and require an id check+temporary register

      • +1

I think ID check and register just opens it up for privacy concerns.

        • A register that's deleted in 7 days? Nah. It can be as simple as one staff member with an excel spreadsheet recording nothing but drivers license number. Nothing identifiable about that. Doesn't need to work across stores. Or it could require flybuys if across stores

          • +2

@justtoreply: You'd really be happy handing over your DL just to buy some gift cards? What's to say that Coles staff won't accidentally leave it on the counter for the visitors to see, or worse still some dodgy Coles staff harvesting the information and either use or sell your data.

            • -2

@t25: What? No. Give them your DL number

            • -2

@t25: Get that tin foil hat going.

              • +1

@filmer: Better to be slightly cautious than sorry. Optus/Medibank should've been a good reminder on how data can be easily compromised by bad actors.

                • @t25: both got away with it. Vast majority of customers couldn't care less. Why would anything change?

  • +13

Hopefully they bring more $500 or even $1000 value ones , better for the environment.

    • +2

Can you imagine the horror on the faces of senior staff if they did? They would all die of heart attacks given how they police the $50, $100 and $250 gift cards.

  • Can you stack them multiple hundreds in OW? Or 1 gift card per transaction?

    • One card only
