      def Dual Boiler

      • does it make better coffee?

        • +15

Dual boiler is twice as good

          • +1

@bloom: at boiling, but does it make better coffee..

            • +1

              @jv: Yes!
              Has an upgraded flux capacitor

            • +7

@jv: Yes, 58mm portafilter, paired with a better quality grinder, and better temperature stability and variables to adjust to different types of coffee. It will make a better coffee than the pro when both are used with the same level of knowledge and skills.

            • +2

@jv: If you are boiling your coffee JV then you are doing it wrong (91-96 degrees please) ;)

              • @Solrak:

                (91-96 degrees please)

That is boiling temperature at 1,500 metres altitued.

                • +1

@jv: JV drinks his boiling coffee every morning on top of Cradle Mountain in Tassie

                • +1

@jv: I think you need to quit it with the altitued (sic).

            • @jv: Actually, one of them doesn't usually boil.

        • +1

Yes because you would buy a better grinder than the one built into the Pro.

          • -8

            @Solrak:

Yes because you would buy a better grinder

I'd just use my bamix stick blender.

better grinder than the one built into the Pro.

I heard that one is pretty good though.

            • +1

@jv: If you already use a bamix stick blender to grind your coffee, why would you spend extra money ($800-$1000) on an espresso machine for better coffee? The logical upgrade path would suggest stop using your bamix first!

              • -1

                @thedriver:

If you already use a bamix stick blender to grind your coffee

I'm upgrading from a pod coffee machine.

there is no "Pro" version of this, the Barista Pro is a newer version of the Barista Express.

If you can hold purchasing until 6pm, stack with:

    • $70 bonus StoreCash; and
    • Receive a bonus Gift Pack valued up to $130 via redemption; and
    • 10% off Ultimate gift cards at Woolies; or
    • 5% uncapped cashback from either ShopBack or Cashrewards (ShopBack 3% cashback)
    • I've got $700 in 15% off Coles the Ultimate Home gift cards (so they are good for jb or tgg) and (had) $150 15%off Him… The wife just grabbed a $50 card and went and spent it.

      • is there a limit on giftcards that can be used on the TGG website?

      • 15% off Coles the Ultimate Home gift cards

Is this a regular discount? I don't think I've seen them at 15% off before

    • +2

      Won't gift cards invalidate cashback?
Also online you can only enter 2 gift cards which would prevent going through CR or SB cashback too?

      • +5

It does, that’s why there’s the “or” after dot point 4 :)

        • +3

Thanks, reading comprehension fail on my part 🙃

    • 6pm means online and TCN cards don't work online?
      Edit: maybe ultimate ones work

    • Why 6pm, what am I missing? Looks like the store cash deal is on now and expires the 23rd?

      • +1

ShopBack 3% cashback only starts from 6pm-11:59pm
Otherwise you can shop now at Cashrewards with 5% cashback

        • +1

          Cheers!

      • I think depending on the store. Jb website says it should. Not sure about TGG

    • Sorry how do you claim this is it in store for the store cash?

    • +2

It does in fact have a 58mm portafilter (click "Show More" on the linked product page).

    • -4

It's an $800 kitchen appliance not a semi pro machine…

      • +5

It is a semi pro machine, untill you hit like 1900aud you wont be able to find a comparable machine

        • +1

Double that price at least for anything equivalent

    • I can literally measure my 58mm portafilter if you would like?

    • +1

Do you make stuff up without even bothering to read stuff before doing so? Just wow.

    • Are you referring to the size? or the system it uses to mount to the machine? I've bought MANY 58mm accessories that have worked flawlessly, but I recall James Hoffman trying to measure the machine performance and wasn't able to get the equipment to connect with the machine without the need for adaptors. No big issue though as the usual consumer accessories like a dosing cup, funnel, new baskets, fancy tamps, etc. fit just fine.

Also just because I hate when people spead incorrect information, I've just measured my machine's filter and although my eyesight ain't the best, I measure 58.1mm, likely my eyesight or the faded plastic ruler to blame for the 0.1mm difference.

  • Motherf….. i bought the oracle and trying to take it back to the good guys to get the difference at least. Didn't even receive storecash. Should have waited longer.

  • +1

Thanks! Just purchased after becoming more and more curious about these since being charged $5.50 for a coffee the other day in the city.

I’ve been seeing a flood of deals on these in recent days and was great to finally pull the trigger. 5% cashback + $70 good guys store cash + Breville redemption offer made it an easy win…esp since I’ll have it in hand this afternoon.

Now onto the hunt for the right beans & grinder to wrap this package up.

    • +4

You’ll be very happy with this purchase!

You’ll be saving at least $5.50/day for years to come, With a little bit of practice, decent beans and grinder you’ll prefer the coffee you make and this will pay for itself. A total win-win situation.

      • +1

i'd say it costs more than 5.50 a coffee for us to do it ourselves (our own time, economy of scale, youtube/ozbargain research etc). just the fun of doing it. same with your garden bed and veggies you grow. surely it costs more than going to the store.

        • +4

Certainly not saving $5.50/coffee. The beans alone would be about $1 (at around $25/500g and ~18g/shot). Plus cost of milk (if you want that) and electricity (minimal). I'd estimate time to make coffee more-or-less equal to time to get from cafe and back.

Still, at $4 saving/coffee, you're looking at about 225 coffees before it pays itself off. That's not bad…

The issue is it's a slippery slope… Sure, the stock dual boiler makes fine coffee, but it can be modded to be better! Plus you really need a good grinder to get the most out of it, so justify a further $800 or so on that.
And after that, you're so into coffee making that Breville just doesn't cut it. You're convinced that you need to upgrade to a nice Linea Mini or something. Next thing you know you're down $10,000 just because you wanted to say $4 on a cup of coffee!

Long story short: Yeah. I think it's more about the experience of making coffee than the cost savings. As you say, just like gardening…

          • @NigelTufnel: Even by your harsh assessment of home brewing costs/time wasting it would only take me about 60 days to pay this machine off since I am currently making 4 coffees/day. No mods necessary, complete satisfaction easily achieved.

            There's no way I'm down $10000, that's ridiculous!

            • @JTTheMan: Haha. Sorry, it was more my tongue in cheek assessment of coffee making as a hobby. Heck, I'm still using my Dedica setup I bought almost 5 years ago, and only recently upgraded the steam wand and got a new grinder. It has well and truly paid for itself.

But if I had the means (and space), I can certainly see myself spending an insane amount on coffee equipment, as I've come to quite enjoy the process. And I'm not alone. Luckily, my paycheck and my wife keep me in check!

              • @NigelTufnel: Ha, you're not wrong.

I was briefly tempted to reclaim some bench space with the Dedica but overall I think the benefits outweigh the minor loss of space by sticking with the Dual Boiler.

And yes I occasionally fantasize at the La Marzocco Linea Mini but there's no way I could justify such an expense! Yes, the wife makes a good financial officer ;)

          • @NigelTufnel:

The beans alone would be about $1 (at around $25/500g)

            ಠ~ಠ

Think you're on the wrong website mate

            • @goingDHfast: Not uncommon to see bean deals on here for around this price get a few upvotes.

But your right, the ozbargain way is to go to aldi and get a recent roast for $17/kg.

      • +1

You only save money if you stop buying takeaway coffee, otherwise you're just spending more and drinking more.

I normally buy a coffee or two at work with colleagues, being able to make one at home doesn't change that.

        • That would be true but I've stopped buying outside coffees except for rare occasions.

    • +1

DO NOT forget a 0.1g set of digital scales. This will make your life soooo much easier dialing in the coffee grinds. Seriously, put it on the top of your to buy list.

      • How much coffee grind do you use?

        • When I had the Dual Boiler I was using the double basket with 21g. I then purchased an 18g VST basket and used 18g in that (which I still use with my Lelit Bianca).

          • @Jebus: When did you change over to the Bianca, and what differences do you see over the BDB?

            • +2

@kiitos: Long answer coming up, be warned. I've owned the Bianca for about 8 months.

I owned a BDB for over 6 years and loved it when it worked. Unfortunately, too much went wrong during its life (needed new triac board, new seals for the 3rd time, OPV valve basically exploded, leaking steam wand, leaking from thermostat port which is next to impossible to reach).

I wanted something that was built to last, with parts that are used commercially and easy to source, not to mention a machine that was built with maintenance and home repair in mind. The difference in internals is staggering, the layout, the quality of components and the thought that went into the design so that everything important is easily accessible without having to remove a million things.

The user experience is more tactile, it feels like you have more control, pulling and turning levers rather than pushing buttons.

Noise was another annoyance with my BDB, the OPV/vibratory pump quickly started to produce this annoying noise when pulling a shot. A solenoid repair worked for a few months but it came back. After a couple years my machine's noise got worse the longer I left the machine on, eventually producing a really loud buzzing sound (multiple solenoid valve and temperature issues).

The Bianca on the other hand is so quiet, the rotary pump sounds solid/deep but also consistent and quiet (great for having a newborn in the house).

It all points to an experience thing, rather than a shot that is of higher quality in the cup.

When my BDB broke for the n'th time and it became obvious that I could no longer repair all the faults, I thought back on the 6+ years I had it, and I would say more than half the time it had something wrong with it. Not wrong enough to make bad coffee, but wrong enough to be annoying.

So I decided to spend extra money and import a Bianca (around $3k) with the hope that it lasts me a long long time and that maintenance is a joy rather than a frustration. I chose the Bianca because it had a good mix of tech and build quality (e.g. fast heat up, movable water tank, auto pre-infuse at low pump pressure) that a lot of other machines don't have.

I can't speak to the coffee results because I upgraded my grinder at the same time (Eureka Mignon Specialita), so it wouldn't be fair to compare the results I'm getting now with the results I got with the BDB.

Feel free to DM if you have any specific questions.

              • @Jebus: Just bought a BDB - but have buyer's remorse.

My (second hand) Lelit Glenda which still sits proudly on the kitchen counter has been a solid machine and easy to work on; As have the two other Lelit machines I've owned and since moved on (spanning all the way back to 2007). I've been able to essentially sell each machine for maybe a hundred dollars less than what I paid for it (second hand) originally and upgrade to a newer unit. They are like the pre-covid-priced Toyota of coffee machines - albeit made in Italy :)

I'm somewhat concerned with this BDB that I've bought a Jeep :) It looks ok, and I'm sure it will go well for the first few years, but I'm terrified what happens once it is out of warranty. Resale will also be a problem.

I've had my eye on the Lelit Elizabeth V3 and the Rancilio Silvia Pro X. Unfortunately there is very few if any examples second-hand floating around - and $2500+ new is a little too rich for me.

                • +1

@mshanann: Even with the issues I had it still made great coffee for many years and I still wholeheartedly recommend them to friends. For this price it's unbeatable really. Will it last 10 years? Not likely, but at $900 that's ok.

I commented further down this page with links showing the new BDB's being built a little more robust than the old versions. The steam leaks caused a lot of extra headaches sitting right under the triac board, but hopefully the new connections can mitigate those issues and keep the machine running trouble free for longer.

Don't be disappointed by potential problems that may never happen, get excited about a dual boiler for under 1k that heats up in like 3 minutes :D Great steam pressure, timer functionality is very handy, pre-infusion works a treat too.

                  • @Jebus: Good to know… now I just need to pop the lid to see if I got a newer revision or the old model :)

Hope the Bianca (v3?) has met expectations. Jealous!

                • +1

@mshanann: Soft water and learn how to take the top off so that if u hear hissing u can immediately change an o oring, and you should be fine (accepting other things do crop up like they do with Italian built machines)

      • +1

Would also recommend a Bottomless portafilter to help with monitoring extractions

    • The price of takeaway coffee has gone up a lot with inflation eh. I pulled the trigger on OP's post last night, FOMO because I wasn't sure if I'd see a better price. Nek minnit

    • +1

Just push breville for the gift pack as they were taking ages. An email to customer support and i got a reply to be patient and look at the T&C. They sent it next day and got it delivered the following day. I wanted to use their beans first. Roasted a week ago so not bad.

      • I'm in the same boat. I haven't heard from Breville after submitting the gift pack application so I might email them now!

    • Plenty of great freshly roasted whole beans deals on Ozbargains at the moment. If you get in quick you might be able to order for guaranteed arrival by Xmas

  • Will pull the trigger on this. Might grab the grinder too. Of these are purchased separately, the machine can be had for $889 and grinder for $269 then you'll get the store cash of $70 and $20 bringing the net cost down to $1068. Oops then factor the 5% cash back. So roughly $1020

    • +3

Please get a good grinder and not the breville one. This is a great machine but it can only do so much without a decent grinder. Consider a sette or d64 or niche

      • +1

Can you provide the web links to these model of grinders? Thanks in advance.

      • +1

        Or Eureka range from ECS

        • +2

I have the Eureka mignon single, it's both gorgeous, fast, quiet, incredibly consistent, no retention, and will probably outlive me.

They literally took their most popular grinder, looked at all the ETSY crowds most popular mods, and integrated them into their base product. Can't argue.

          • @[Deactivated]: Agree. I have the Specialita and love it. I may upgrade to the new Libra for the weight grinding and better portafilter holder or maybe a Oro (single dosing) or XL (bigger flat burrs)

      • I've got an Mazzer Luigi Mini although would like dose control so will probably offload it at some point

    • I thought storecash is only valid for a 10 day from date of issue which is first and last Thrusday of the month. Worth $0 if you dont plan on purchasing anything else.

  • +1

I've had mine for 6 years and it is still going strong with 3 - and 4 cups a day. Definitely recommended at this price!

    • +1

Should be about time to replace it then if my experience is anything to go by!

      • Servicing would help prolong it's lifespan wouldn't it?

        • +2

I have purchased a few replacement seals and parts lately, but that is to be expected with any machine like this. $100 or so in parts and an afternoon of my time looking at YouTube and diy maintenance articles and it is still going strong.

I wonder if there is any difference between a 2022 model and mine though.

          • @APD2022: They're different?

            • @Mungnang: I don't know, but I would expect them to have tweaked some of the components for common failure points over the years.

              • +2

@APD2022: Newer models have a different design for the steam boiler attachments which replaces some of the worst culprits. In saying that, o-rings are relatively easy to replace.

                Old Version

                New Version

        • Yes and feeding it good water would help to. It's a good idea to have a few O-rings handy. Look to replaced o-rings every year/eighteen months (or you will end up with a faulty Triac board) Also bargain on flipping the white internal ball joint washer for leaking steam wand. Not hard or expensive to do just requires a little time to carry out.

          • @Solrak: Thanks for the tips! I have the o-rings but haven't touched the steam wand so I'll keep an eye on that.

  • Does StoreCash expire?

Can I pay online with multiple gift cards?

    • 2 gift cards only

    • 10 day expiry. Will take a few weeks to receive it iny experience

  • +1

I would get this if I already had a grinder. As it turns out I need that + this, so I'll stick with the one down Pro for now I guess.

  • how long does it take to get the store cash wallet? i just signed up. presumably you need to sign up first, activate and then purchase this boiler?

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/wallet-sign-up

    • took 30min for me

      • 30 Mins?? Geez, took almost a month for mine to appear.

  • This is a fantastic price and easily sells for ~2.5x overseas like in a US department store. The most comparable machine from a features point of view costs about $3k.

  • Anyone know if you can still earn the store cash from TGG when paying for an item via ultimate giftcard?

  • I paid $905 on good guys commecial, but haven't picked it up yet. What can I do?
