Always big props to anyone looking at upskilling.

  • +3

The course fee is free but you still have to pay the resource fees.

      for some, not all

Realistically speaking, how valuable are these Cert IVs and Adv Diplomas/Diplomas for Cybersecurity?

    • +48

Guaranteed to get a job at Optus or Medibank

      • I didnt think they had any cybersecurity roles

    • +13

When I went to the info session for NSW TAFE two years ago, Cert & Dip for Cybersecurity are basically training (putting theory into practice using Kali Linux on VMs) for the CCNA & CISSP exams. These exams are not conducted by TAFE and the fees are not covered by the TAFE fee/exemption/scholarship. Master degree in CyberSec is aim towards the formulation of security policies and managing their implementation. It is heavy with theory, oriented towards the management of people and risks, and much less hands-on than the TAFE courses.

The TAFE teachers/lecturers have connections with industry, and it was reported that many good students were recommended for jobs and snapped up by companies before they graduate. I don't know if that was an over exaggeration and/or if it is still the same now.

        cheers - appreciate the info.

For those in Victoria there are also a big range of Free TAFE courses there. Go to: https://www.vic.gov.au/free-tafe

    • Yeah and for whatever it seems like our Victorian Free TAFE scheme is the only one not limited by criteria to other states so someone in WA could do one of our courses online even

  • Damn, wouldnt mind doing another Tafe course, half price cert 4 Instro looks pretty good, there isnt a NSW equivalent of subsidy is there?

      • Damn, the UEE40420 - Certificate IV in Electrical Instrumentation is only available at Newcastle, otherwise nothing.

        • It's a terrible course, only practical is setting up a few laser and sonar sensors. When I signed up I thought we'd be doing all the instro tubing, it's mostly just the usual heath and safety bullshit.

    • +13

      Pathetic.

They sure use the term “Engineer” very loosely in Australia.

Hopefully this will be useful and fill some of the skills shortages.

    • -8

I forgot that Universities/Eng Aus owned the word…wait…they don't. Perhaps you need a dose of humility my friend.

      • +11

You can’t go around calling yourself a doctor or lawyer. Those are protected titles. Likewise engineer is a protected title in other countries just not in Australia.

I’m not even an engineer so it doesn’t affect me but there is an obvious difference between someone who studies engineering at university for 4-5 years versus a tafe diploma or certificate. Legally a non degree qualified engineer is not able to sign off drawings and engineering calculations. So the term engineer can be misleading hence my comment the term is used very loosely.

I remember Zelda spirit tracks…the whole time i was cringing just thinking they needed to call Link a train DRIVER not a train ENGINEER because.. You know.. All he did was drive a train

        • -1

Please provide evidence that it is a protected title.

      • +1

It's not (IMHO, as a Degree qualified Chartered Engineer), a question of humility, more a recognition of the difference between a TAFE qual, and a Uni Degree.

Before I did my B.Eng, I'd previously done a 4 year Mechanical Engineering trade apprenticeship in the UK equivalent of TAFE, so I understand the differences.

And in for example Qld, certain activities can legally only be undertaken by a Degree qualified Chartered Engineer. Which is as it should be, more widely so.

While a tradie can for example call themselves a 'Home Appliance Engineer', and I'm fine in them fixing my washing machine, I don't think they could actually undertake all the design and reliability etc activities that go into bringing said appliance to market.

A few years back, Chartered Engineers were elevated to the heady heights of being able to sign Stat Dec's, Passport applications etc, joining Chartered Accountants, Bank Managers!?, and Senior Public Servants, although perhaps joining this elite 'rogues gallery' may be a back handed compliment - apologies to all honest members of those professions!

    • +4

You're not wrong. Curently in Australia, "engineer" isn't a protected title so any tom dick or harry can profess themselves as being an engineer in certain part of Australia and there's no rule or law against that.

      • -1

as I understand, anyone can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon, or at least do "cosmetic surgery" with no more certification than the sign on the door or in front of the building….

        • +2

I don’t believe that is true.

There are plastic surgeon who are specialist but there are also cosmetic surgeons who aren’t necessarily specialist to the extent of reconstructive surgery as a Plastic surgeon but they are still degree qualified doctors.

Basically you still need to be a doctor to call yourself a cosmetic surgeon even if you don’t have qualifications in surgery. So it is misleading. But a random off the street can not called themselves a cosmetic surgeon.

Here is an ABC article about it.

  • would be great if online only.

    • I would imagine there would be plenty that sign up but then never attempt the course material if it was solely online.

      • +5

just for edu email and discount? haha

      • +1

some people have existing work, carer or other responsibilities that make on-campus attendance difficult or impossible.

    • Theres a few that come up as online only but i believe theres always at least one in person exam/presentation that they cant do online.

    • go to https://www.northmetrotafe.wa.edu.au/free-23
filter by study mode and you can select online only.

  • Do we have Mark to thank for this too?

Shouldnt you be making these comments on Facebook?

      • No.

        • -1

Why not? All your peers are there, go go go, we need more 'state daddy' comments!!

  • Seems available for everyone in WA no matter what qualification you've done before, anyone see a limit to doing a number of courses?

    • anyone see a limit to doing a number of courses?

      probably just your spare time.

  • Fee Free TAFE courses are being offered across Australia in 2023 due to partnerships between the Commonwealth and every State/Territory government. Worth checking your local jurisdiction’s website.

  • +7

    Free edu email!

    • +2

What's the easiest way to score a free edu email?

  • If I do UEE62111 Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology - Electrical, can I go on to do a masters afterwards?
Also does anybody have feedback on what the tafe EE courses are like compared to university level (mainly compared to curtin).

    • +1

It'll get you one year off a four year degree … then you can do masters

      • 2 years of tafe to save 1 at uni.. would you know what the worth of this qualification to employers (seems next to useless then).

        • +4

from past experience (civil background), students that have come through the tafe pathway seem more rounded and employable and tend to secure work experience

          • @liam2040: Sorry, I mean the tafe qualification on its own doesnt seem to lead to any employment opportunities?

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: not entirely sure mate … the civil equivalent is pretty much a defacto qualification for drafting, of which there is as much work as there are projects. The electrical course may be similiar but in any case your working role would be limited to a 'technician' level … supporting an engineer.

  • Do these courses qualify for any unidays student discounts?

  • +2

Do you have to be 18-24 to quality for this though?

  • +2

To be eligible for free training, reduced-fee qualifications or a subsidised training place; you must have left school*, have your primary place of residence in Western Australia, and are either:

    an Australian citizen; or
    a permanent visa holder or holder of visa subclass 309, 444, 449, 785, 786, 790, or 820; or
a dependent or spouse of the primary holder of a visa subclass 457 or 482**; or
a bridging visa holder who has made a valid application for a visa subclass 866; or
a bridging visa E holder (subclasses 050 and 051) who has made a valid application for a visa subclass 785 or 790.

    • Was hoping to do one of them online as I reside in Vic but looks like the criteria knocks me out

    • +1

How about the resident return visa 155, we are permanent resident too :(

I'm a lecturer in one of the courses that is going to be free

Just because you apply, it does not mean you will get a spot. Enrolments for first preferences closes today (9/12) so if you are actually interested, better to apply today.

There are not that many spots available on each of the courses, in my area - we are probably able to take one class extra over what our normal intake would be - so just be aware that signing up doesnt mean you will get in (and that applies to any semester, now that courses are free - we would expect likelihood of getting it will be much lower

If you sign up with no intention of actually taking the course, be aware you are taking the place of someone who genuinely may have wanted to complete the course. Even if you do not turn up to any classes, they wont offer your spot to someone else once enrolments are finalised. Please only enrol in these courses if you actually intend to take the course.

    • +1

thanks for the heads up on enrolment dates. have sent through my application today

  • Has anyone done the project management courses and can provide any feedback? Is it worth doing or should i just look towards Prince2 Foundation or something for an entry level qualification?

  • Jeez, 23 days till 2023??

  • Is the email lifetime?

    • +1

No, it expires - I think its one year after your course start, or the end of that calendar year
