Advantages of Intel Core i5 1235U
-Has 4 more physical cores
-Newer PCI Express version – 4.0
-11% faster in a single-core Geekbench v5 test - 1578 vs 1422 points
-2% higher Turbo Boost frequency (4.4 GHz vs 4.3 GHz)
Advantages of AMD Ryzen 5 5625U
-More modern manufacturing process – 7 versus 10 nanometers
-Has 4 MB larger L3 cache size
-Slightly better all core performance
-Better energy efficiency and battery life.
Don't listen to this. The cores are not directly comparable. The 5625 has 6c/12t while the i3 has only 2 "performance" cores and 8 "efficiency" cores.
Intel only has "efficiency" cores because their manufacturing process is inferior to TSMC, which AMD and Apple use. In general, Intel can't place enough performance cores onto their CPU die without significantly upping the voltage. Increasing voltage causes the processor to be much less power efficient and need good cooling to keep it under control. This significantly effects battery life.
For example if you look at a review of the Surface 5 with the i7 1255u, it has over 2hrs worse battery life than the Surface 4 with a 4000 series Ryzen processor from 2020, without providing any significant boost in performance.

"So the last-gen AMD-powered Surface Laptop 4 lasted 2 hours and 14 minutes longer than the Intel-powered Surface Laptop 5."
In terms of benchmark performance, you could look at Passmark which tests the processor over a much longer period of time compared to Geekbench, which is very quick.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/4765vs4760/Intel-i5-123…
The i5 1235u scores 13537
The Ryzen 5 5625u scores 14867
Passmark is a better indicator of performance because a hot CPU will thermal throttle over time causing performance degradation.
I have a lower specced i3 model and these are horribly built, I would recommend looking at an older used enterprise laptop like a think pad of some sort. Plenty of places refurb them and post deals up here, I believe you will get more longevity out of that over one of these.
Thanks for your feedback, I'll be buying an Intel Nuc M15 instead. Waiting for the next deal.
Hey give me a heads up if u see one.. im in the same boat
No worries, will do
Thank you for this post, I'm looking for a laptop around this price-point and just noticed this post. This looks better (I think, with my novice eyes) than the one I'm currently considering and asking for help with (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/742856).
Read your post, this laptop is much better than the Acer you listed
If you have a friend who can upgrade the memory for you on this laptop, it's a good deal
If you don't need the laptop immediately, there will be more 16GB RAM laptop deals in the future around the $900 mark and if lucky, $800-850'ish

Thanks very much @highmargin, you are a legend for compiling all the above info! Super helpful info. Thank you!
in terms of performance, which one is better? R5 5625U or I5-1235U?
