Worth noting that this ThinkPad comes with Lenovo's "ThinkPad Pen Pro" pen according to the PSREF page for this SKU.
The keyboard is not backlit though.

Looks pretty good for a 13" ultrabook under $1,000
Screen isn't too shabby and even with touch. Plenty of connectivity..

  • Weight 1.39kg, pretty heavy for a 13.3inch

    but specs are on point.

I have this laptop, ordered direct from Lenovo at the start of this year. Main differences are that mine has the upgraded CPU (5850U, 8 cores/16 threads), 512GB SSD and backlit keyboard. Advantages of ordering direct are that you can customize the laptop to your liking.

Note that this model does come with a built-in pen garaged into the chassis. If you are interested in heavy drawing on this laptop, I recommend the "Lenovo Mod Pen" which has a thick barrel design more suitable for long-term use. I have installed "Clip Studio Paint" on this laptop, done some doodling and the drawing capabilities seems fine to me. However, I am not much of an artist so am not qualified to give a proper evaluation in this aspect.

It's my first laptop that can charge via USB-C and you can use one of those compact USB chargers rather than the included bulky version. My Heymix 65W USB charger works fine with no issues. The 20W PD version also works but is classified by this laptop as a "slow charger" which means that the laptop battery will slowly lose charge if you do something intensive like video rendering as 20W is not enough to fully power the laptop.

The build quality is very good and the construction sturdy. Unfortunately, the trade-off is the increased weight

  • Plan to return surface laptop4 for this one…. Any Recommendations?

  • 1 x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4)
    1 x HDMI 2.0

Sorry if this is a noob question, but I see that there is support for DP over USB-C. Does this mean that I could use a USB-C to HDMI adaptor as well as the HDMI port to drive and extend across two monitors?

    • +2

The answer is "yes" and AMD Vega 8's specs says it can support a maximum of 4 monitors. However, I thought that I might as well test it out rather than relying on specs since I have the same model laptop in front of me.

Just then, I connected a second external monitor to the HDMI port, enabled multiple displays in the settings and selected the "extend display" option. By default, the second monitor became an extended monitor to the right of my laptop screen. I then connected a 3rd monitor to the laptop via USB-C (this monitor has a USB-C connection so I didn't use any adapters). Once powered on, the 3rd monitor became an extended monitor to the left of my laptop screen.

I ended up with three monitors. The laptop screen in the middle extending to the second screen on the right and the third screen to the left.

      • Ah thanks so much for testing, really appreciate it! You mentioned the specs for the iGPU state that it supports four monitors, so I'm guessing that it shouldn't matter what the cable interface is right (eg USB-C vs DP vs HDMI)?

As a random aside, not sure if it's just me but I find it hard to wrap my head around things like DP over USB-C, alt mode and thunderbolt when it comes to laptops and multi-monitor support. I guess it just leads to the scenario where not all USB-C ports are created equal

        • Both USB-C connectors on this laptop carries the DisplayPort 1.4 signal. This means that you can just connect a USB-C cable for both the video signal (DisplayPort 1.4 spec) and the power supply. Many new monitors are coming out with the USB-C option so you can just use one USB-C cable to rule them all and get rid of power cables and HDMI cables etc.

        • Cable interface doesn't really matter. Note that it comes with two USB-C (video) output and one HDMI output.

      • I then connected a 3rd monitor to the laptop via USB-C (this monitor has a USB-C connection so I didn't use any adapters).

Does this cable connect to the monitor via DP port?

It specifically mentions DisplayPort 1.4 but a usb-c hub with DP 1.4, and HDMI should also work to extend the monitor.

        • The monitor has a built-in USB-C port. It's a modern trend to just use a USB-C to USB-C cable and deal away with all the other HDMI or DisplayPort cables.

DisplayPort 1.4 in the USB-C specs simply means the USB-C carries the DisplayPort signal over the USB-C cable.

  • Is this a 2 in 1 laptop?

    • One of the picture on Lenovo website has it founded around like a tablet, so I would say yes.

Even comes with pen as per comments.

    • Yes, you can fold it into a table form and it comes with a built-in garaged pen.

Didn't think I'd be buying a laptop today but here we are. Thanks OzB

  • Hi ozbargain,

Would it be worth it to pay a lil more for the NUC, since it's 512 GB?

    • +3

No. get this and by the time you fill up the 256GB, you can clone it to a new <$100 1TB SSD

If you actually use it as a portable device, this CPU/graphics/RAM combo in a 13.3" form factor is almost the perfect combo in terms of power and size

  • So I've bought two gaming laptops in the last 12 months… the first I ended up giving to my older son so that he can use it for school. The second turned out to be too heavy for what I need so my younger son now uses it. Can I really justify a third laptop in a year? Hrmmm….

    • +3

This is ozb. You buy first. Justify after.

  • Thank god I missed this. Prefer muting a Mac but at this price I would’ve bought it.

  • Arghhh I was gonna buy this!!! Anyone got any recommendations for an alternative? Preferably on eBay please..

  • This looked like a solid deal!
