    Hi,

Looking for one with backlit keyboard to lug around for intense uni work mainly

Get this or wait till black friday?

    • +2

if you check (read) the spec - this one has backlit keyboard.

    • +16

No offence but your comment history goes from <$250 second hand laptops to asking this same question on every deal
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/135941/comments

      Let us know the following:

      1. Do you have a budget? If yes, what is it?
      2. Within that budget, do you need a laptop that will last a certain amount of years? If yes, how many years?
      3. Is "intense uni work" using Windows/Office/Edge or are you using other specialised graphical, engineering or other applications?
      4. How careful are you in handling and looking after your devices? Do you pack them properly in a sleeve or do you just chuck them in a bag?
      • +1

        No offence taken.
I started with refurbed as I am want the best value for the money, until our fellow ozbargainers were commenting on screen resolution etc etc so am learning from it and moving up to the new stuff.

Budget $1000 however can stretch if you say spend that extra $100

10 years - the longer the better of course

        Windows/Office/Edge more research based

Have a Dell laptop bag to use

        Thanks

        • +3

Wait for the Surface Pros combo to go on special again for around $850, perfect for Uni use

No laptop nowadays will last you for 10yrs, 5yrs max

          • -4

@Homr: better off to just get an iPad Pro for uni :)

            • +1

              @webtherapist: I don't use apple so can't recommend

            • @webtherapist: Limited functionality for too much $?
I can get the same & more functionality on Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with S-Pen, microSD (1TB or library of smaller sizes), DeX functionality on 4K screen/USb-C attached devices & other non-closed system features ;)

            • +1

@webtherapist: Not sure if many academic applications run on IoS yet

          • @Homr: Which Surface Pro combo you are mentioning? Could you please let me know? I am looking to buy Surface Pro and waiting on some good deals.

          • @Homr: Laptops last as long as you want them to last.
A computer with windows 95 still works it’s just not that useful
I have an iphone 5 that still works it’s just a bit slow by today’s standards.
and no, i don’t use it it’s just laying around the house

        • +1

10 years - the longer the better of course

          I'd suggest being more realistic.
Even if get top-of-the-range hardware (cpu + ram) which is much more than ~1000$, you take good care of it (like cleaning the fans, change thermal paste etc), have no accidents and liquid splits… The display on any laptop would be dimmer and dimmer and become really dim after 5-7 years.
This one with only 300nits would probably become pretty poor after 3 years. You still would be able to use it, but there would be no pleasure in it…

          • @Pest85: Do you think this is better deal than the yoga one from last week or two (800 bucks) if you dont need touch screen? Cheers mate

        • +1

If you can't wait, this is good enough for your university use.

        • +6

You don't need anything more than a $700-800 laptop
Similar spec to this one but wait for Black Friday and the post Christmas sales
The Dell and Lenovo education stores should also have upcoming deals that you can access with your EDU email

Stick with Dell and Lenovo because when handled with care, the better quality models can physically last 10 years
What you will find is that after 5 years when the battery has degraded and the screen has lost brightness, you will use the laptop more as a desktop plugged into AC power and an external monitor
If you do want to go full endurance mode and replace the battery or screen, Dell and Lenovo will be decent for future spare parts availability

          • +1

@Look Up: Bought Dell XPS in 2012 and still working perfectly except battery is dead and i am using it as desktop

Good laptop good build good price. I have the Ryzen 7 4800u version and it works like a charm.

  • +23

We've got almost exactly the same build of this model issued to nearly 1000 staff across AU & NZ. The specs are not all that exciting but it's a solid laptop. A few notes:

    • Although the in-built display is only FHD it can output up to 2K via an external screen, via either TB4/USB-C or HDMI.
    • No Ethernet can be a pain so if you need it then get a dock or a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Wi-Fi is usually rock-solid, though.
    • There is a known issue with some Lenovo USB-C docks not playing nicely with Tigerlake processors - see here for details. We found it was necessary update the dock firmware afterwards as well.
    • There's been a few in the fleet that have power issues after a short amount of time (not charging, intermittent power delivery through the adapter, etc). Not a huge %%, just enough to make it noticeable.

Our staff have generally been happy with these, and they're tough enough to stand the abuse of being moved around a lot. The price is excellent and less than what we paid for a bulk order direct from Lenovo. They're probably running this model out as the Gen 3 is now the current spec.

    • +1

      Much appreciated.

  • Hey guys, final year CS student here.
I'm probably gonna run Linux on this and install VSCode + Android Studio.
Anyone know if this is suitable? I'm mostly worried about Android Studio seeing it as it is a CPU/RAM hog.
Also looking at the E15 deal if that's better.

    • Easily enough unless you start working on large commercial projects.

  • Got something similar through Grays a few months ago (Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G2-ITL 14-inch Notebook, Silver - 20VD001SAU)

Specs seem almost identical although I paid a tad under 600 for it.

Screen has some light bleeding on the corners but for $600 I cant complain. It was sold as refurbished but according to battery cycles in the bios it hadn't been used - no Lenovo warranty (12 months through Grays though).

    • $600 including all taxes and delivery? Thats pretty good if thats the case.

      • Yeah, total was 609 after auction fees and delivery

  • Whats the battery life for this. anyone know how long it last per charge? Normal school work not gaming

    • +2

Our users are reporting up to 2-3 hours of regular use before needing a charge, but that normally includes a fair number of Teams calls (often with video). For reference, our spec has a 50Wh battery in it. Of course, what you'll actually get depends on a lot of factors (Wi-Fi, temperature, CPU usage, etc) but this should give you a fair idea.

    • @XucCac It uses intel 11gen, which runs notoriously hot. Light takes 3-5 hours I would say.
