  • Old skool

    • Not exactly for the serious enthusiasts. I recall there was an Oppo BD player that is significantly better output quality than PS3/PS4 or other players on the market. Nowadays high-end standalone players are pretty much for this.

And of course that's not counting in the streaming services.

  • As someone who’s been waiting on a killer price on the UB820, is there any reason to get the dearer one over this one? This seems like a better buy.

    • Also interested, same question

    • +1

Just a small but some people might find disadvantegous, this doesn't support 7. 1 sound, though it supports atmos? It also doesn't support 4.4.4 colour, though I don't know if anyone could realistically tell the difference. I own a 820, and would happily buy one of these, saving at least $70

      • +4

Yeah it doesn't support 7.1 analogue (only relevant for people with old analogue setups) which you can see with the lack of the extra jacks on the back, but supports potentially superior Dolby Atmos etc. via HDMI.

    • I'm not sure if it shares the same video chip as the 820. Some reviews are critical of the audio quality but I don't quite get it. Wouldn't bitstreaming make the hardware in the player not matter.

    • +6

It doesn't have the HDR optimiser for HDR10 content like the UB420, UB820 and UB9000 have.

Vincent from HDTVTest can explain it better than me.

    • +1

The 820 (and older 420) have the HDR Optimiser & the better HCX chipset.

If you don’t need Dolby Vision, get a 420.

Apart from DV, the 450 pretty much was a downgrade from the 420, maybe due to chip shortages.

  • I can't imagine there being many hdr10+ or DV uhd 4k disc movies? 95% are standard hdr10

    • +6

That thing is somewhat moronic in that you have to always turn on/off dolby vision manually in the settings depending on whether each disc supports it or not. If you accidentally leave DV on in the settings it'll make SDR and HDR10 stuff look somewhat funky

      • +2

        Typical Sony.

      • +1

        so true.

      • Sadly why I got this over the Sony for my A95k.

It works as you'd expect. Otherwise you seriously feel like you're in last millenium tech-wise.

Nonetheless it gets the job done.

      • The DV logos on the packaging are so small too there is no way you want to be hunting for that every time you put a disc in.

  • Unless you have a hdmi 2.1 on TV this player doesn't really pump pure Atmos isn't it? Correct me if worng.

Waiting for a deal on a good quality CD player

    What’s Blu-ray 😝

  • Any chance this thing can play multi region anything?

    • Looks like there's a hack for dvd playback but you need a custom ir remote.

    • +1

4K bluray it’s region free if that helps

    • +1

These are the options that are available, AFAIK:

      1) DVD playback can be be reset to Region 0 (ALL Regions) for free under initial warranty (for Australian product) by Panasonic Australia. They will provide you with a service authorisation with their nearest service agent. The agent does the reprogramming and takes about 15 mins. Note they can only reprogramme the DVD playback function, NOT Blu-ray.

      2) 4K Ultra HD HDR. This standard does not have any Zone/Region restriction and discs only playback on compatible players.

      3) Blu-ray (not to be confused with 4K Ultra HD). Firmware on equipment supplied to the Australian market by Panasonic et al are locked to Zone B (UK/Europe/Australia/NZ).

You can have it unlocked for ALL DVD regions and Blu-ray zones via David Gatti Audio in Melbourne:

This is a hardware upgrade. He quotes $250 for the 420/450 model plus shipping costs at your own cost to them. You would need to contact him direct for advice on this DP-UB450GN model. They provide 12 months consumer warranty.
      https://www.gattiweb.com/product/panasonic-dp-ub420-dp-ub450…

They also sell a range of Panasonic and Sony models already modified. They have been operating for a few years now and have never heard anything but good reports.

DISCLAIMER: I have no direct or indirect relationship with this business. I am just providing this information for consideration of options available. As in life, I provide no guarantee for any risk involved.

      I hope this assists. :)

This was just on sale for $262 for Black Friday, now its back up to RRP so i dont see how its much of a deal.

    • +4

Damn, you should’ve posted it as a deal for us to get it then!

  • +1

Not sure why we need to be advised about a RRP price for a 4k Player

    • +1

RRP is technically $399 and this provides a significantly cheaper alternative to UB820 with most of capability. Though seems it has been on sale in the past so worthwhile to wait if that price comes back

  • +2

Came here to see people saying just get an XBX… disappointed.

    Just get an XBX.

    Also, OzRRP?

    • +1

RRP is technically $399 and this provides a significantly cheaper alternative to UB820 with most of capability. Though seems it has been on deeper discount sale in the past so likely worthwhile to wait if that price comes back

      • A Hyundai provides a cheaper alternative to a Ferrari with most of the capability - ie, transports you from A to B. Doesn't make it a deal.

        • This is 1) Below RRP 2) We are talking about a device that plays digitally encoded movies and supports Dolby Vision which is a yes/no feature. The difference in performance between this UB450 and UB820 (from the exact same company Panasonic) is nothing like the difference between a Hyundai vs Ferrari even in a metaphorical sense so who knows why you brought up that tired trope

  • +1

why these bluray players so expensive?!

    • 4k

      • -2

Xbox one S for $120 on Gumtree has a 4k Bluray player too lol

  • +1

As this is being compared to the UB820, I managed to pick one up for $434 including shipping from Videopro in QLD earlier in the year.

  • Hi AV experts/ozbargainers

would this be a good gadget to upsample the FTA TV via antenna cable to 4K resolution? FTA TV looks so bad on a large screen 4k TV. Suggestions welcome. Thank you. Kind regards

    • would this be a good gadget to upsample the FTA TV via antenna cable to 4K resolution?

Some TV can upscale it by itself, like my Samsung and a little bit better.

      • Thank You

        • +3

But this is a 4k disc player, so nothing to do with FTA TV.

  • I got the 820 the other week for $424.15 with good guys sale + an eBay code. But without a really good deal the 450 seems better value

  • What do you think about this?

LG 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player with Dolby Vision (UBK90 )

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185653073587

    $248

  • would this be any different than playing on a PC?

    • Of course player better especially if you have a good 4k TV.

      • any specific reason ? I play Bluray on PC

  • I've been eyeing up these dedicated players but looking at the comparison of the 820 to a PS5 I didn't bother in the end for such marginal image improvement if any..
