[Pre Order] Vortex Model M SSK Hotswap QMK/VIA Aluminum Keyboard Kit $320 (25% off $430 MSRP) + Shipping @ Keebzncables AU

70

PSA Keebzncables has a banner saying they will be "Out of office until 24 November" so don't worry if you don't get any response before then.
25% Preorder discount ends 25th December.
Like previous NK65 Kit deals this a Preorder for a mechanical keyboard kit. Which means as written on the page this keyboard ships in Late March 2023.

"Kit" in the title means this is not a complete functioning keyboard and will require some minor assembly. It does not include switches, stabilizers, keycaps and cable.
When I add to cart shipping outside of WA added $16 which I think it quite good for a heavy aluminum keyboard kit.

I noticed a recent increase in keyboard posts and when searching for Keyboard Group Buy type deals I managed to find two Novelkeys NK65 Kit Preorder deals which seemed to be well received.

This Vortex Model M SSK is about $50 more expensive before shipping, but it is a much larger layout (TKL) and is still on the lower priced side in terms of Group Buy's for mechanical keyboards (for those who don't know what Group Buy's are, to put it simply it is low quantity of units manufactured compared to mainstream products).
Based on the vintage Model M SSK this keyboard follows that design and aesthetic while supporting traditional Cherry MX switches.

Ordering options

(I have linked the variant which is most compatible so all you have to choose is the colour)

Colour - Choose what you want from what's shown in the image
Layout - I recommend ANSI. This is the standard in most english speaking countries. If you choose ISO you might run into keycap compatibility issues.
Spacebar - Again I recommend TKL/WK 6.25u for compatibility reasons. If you experienced enough to know what WKL 7u means then you can choose that option as it is the layout the original IBM Model M SSK used.

Kit Contents

(Kit includes everything you need except switches, stabilizers, keycaps and cable. It even includes a protective carry case. The only reason to buy Add-ons is if you want a metal plate (aluminum or brass), solder PCB, or extra pieces that are already included in the kit)

Aluminum Badge x 2 (Vortex Logo And "VTK") **Additional badge - "VTK" is only included in preorders *
1 x Top And Bottom Case (Case material is Aluminum)
1 x FR-4 Plate
1 x Hot-swap PCB
1 x USB Daughter Board
Plate Foam: 3mm x2 (Main PCB And F-row)
Poron switch Pad: 0.5mm x2 (Main PCB And F-row)
Bottom Case Sound-dampening Foam: 3mm x1 (Main PCB)

  • For similar price I would recommend Zoom TKL which is group buy at the moment.

    • Yup also QK65 would be another similarly priced 65% Group Buy keyboard that seems to be still available at Switchkeys AU.
      https://www.switchkeys.com.au/collections/keyboards/products…

I think this Vortex Model M SSK is more aimed at those who prefer a TKL layout and those who like the vintage aesthetic.

Again probably repeated a lot in the hobby, but entirely depends on your preferences.

      • Zoom TKL is TKL tho not Zoom65. You have more aesthetics options and Bluetooth. Or wait for extra few days for QK75 if you prefer the 75% layout with both Bluetooth and 2.4G connection.

        • Sorry. I saw Zoom and thought Zoom 65 which is also a very popular keyboard.

What is the lead time on those keyboards? I think Vortex's 4 months lead time is pretty good.

I found it at Dailyclack. I guess Q1 2023 means ships in April at the latest?

While Bluetooth or wireless is a nice feature to have. I can't help but notice the design looks very ordinary kind of like a Keychron https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2772/6534/products/Ergonom…
Especially when I saw this image of the underside https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2772/6534/products/1_1_53c…

I know Zoom and Qwertykeys keyboards are popular though. I guess enthusiasts love it when the design is simple?

          • @harshbdmmaster718: I think the lead time is quite similar between Vortex and Zoom, and yes, I do agree that Zoom TKL looks very ordinary but in return, you will have a relatively lower cost and more options (color and backplate) to choose from in terms of aesthetics.

If you prefer a not-so-ordinary looking and don't mind a 75% layout, QK75 which is going to be held by SwitchKey shortly would be a fantastic budget customized alternative. Check out the link below:
            https://www.qwertykeys.com/collections/qk75

Zoom and QK are popular budget keyboards. Perhaps their designs might be simple, but at least they are well-designed internally (which means a lot to a keyboard because even though aesthetics is indeed a very important factor, at the end of the day if the internal design is bad, you would not like to use the keyboard at all and it would just become a decoration in your room) and have excellent QC control.

  • +1

  • How does the Windows key block-out work?

    • If you choose WKL 7u option you get a different top case which has the blockers there.

  • Wow. You are dedicated!

    • Yeah I mean I was not sure how it would be received so I had to try and answer some questions I predicted being asked such as:

What is a preorder and why is the price so high?
      What is a keyboard kit?
Where are the keycaps and switches?
What do the ordering options mean?

Honestly I have no idea how come this preorder keyboard deal was so popular lol https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/568392
I guess it's cheaper than my post, but I don't see any % preorder discount on the NK65 deal? While mine actually does offer % discount for preordering.

  • Discount still available. Not sure where I read this but I read they were extending the preorder date.
