@DeepHorizon: You forgot oil, ACCC YOU'RE VIOLATING MAH RIGHTS!!!

            @DeepHorizon:

            (Requires fuel)

            Nope, it's included.

          • +2

@DeepHorizon: That's more like electricity. You need the hub for the car to function - more like a car with no engine included.

  • Probably supported by Home Assistant and the new Bluetooth integration as well

    • +2

Sounds like you can get the BLE hub and flash it with Tasmota. Someone got it working with node red as well.

A lot of stuffing around though when an Aqara zigbee motion sensor is $15 on AliExpress (if you buy a few).

Not sure about integrating the sensor directly with HA. I think I'll give it a miss - HA gets complicated enough without having a mish mash of too many different devices to save a few bucks!

      • Interesting, this just got me looking into home automation as I have a few smart devices (globes, IR repeater) I control through google home.
I'd love to start building a smart home with a hub and some automation routines.

Is there any particular hub/platform that's best suited to beginners?
Are there any resources you know of for beginners starting in that space ?

  • +2

    any useful parts in it?

I bought one before but took it back. Ended up buying some on aliexpress instead that worked a lot better. Maybe I bought a dud. Worth giving it a go.

    • I use their door window sensors and they work well so hopefully don't get any grief that you had.

Lol when things need to be listed more than once in the description fml

  • Here's the NZ listing for the item

Can't find the hub on the Bunnings website. Found it in NZ here

  • Hub is a deal breaker

      Pornhub?

  • Spewing its not zigbee compatible.

one left at Edwardstown SA if anyone interested.

Almost bought one for $22 last week.

    That would have been silly…

Your link says it was previously selling for $11.45

    • Some stores obviously still had the original price label on the shelf. Still glad I didn't pay the initial clearance price.

Could this work inside a letterbox? Email me when I receive snail mail.

    • +1

That is INGENIOUS! Might get too cold/dewy for batteries to last long though.

      • Agreed!

Edit: you’d want at least ip44 though

        • Hmm, the updated model doesn’t require a hub, and I could run a long USB cable to power it from inside my house…

          • @muncan: LMAO! If you are running long cable might as well be ethernet and just put a POE camera and have a look it. :P

            • @Naigrabzo: Alternatively, for $10 more the Eufy sensor is battery operated and would pair to my Eufy setup…

But I’m now also thinking of modding a $10 doorbell to my letterbox flap, and skip the whole smart/Internet nonsense. Retro tech.

      • Use hot glue around the joins and it should be fine, unless your letter box is under water at the moment, which is quite possible. :(

        • +3

          Might get too cold […]

          Use hot glue […]

Hot glue doesn't stay hot for that long.

          • @bio: No, but it is pretty water proof and easy enough to remove when the batteries need replacing in a year's time.

            • @whats up skip: I would highly doubt that batteries will last one year in the great outdoors. Especially if it's freezing winter and hot summer. I would be curious to find out though.

        • Ok so if you open it up and waterproof it using the spray for electronics, it might last a little longer. I do this for all my solar and other outdoor lights.

    • +1

I use a Philips Hue outdoor motion sensor for this, but get false alerts from people walking past the letter box (shadows through the slot). Been thinking about putting an internal flap on the slot then using a sensor with an on/off switch via esphome instead. But that won't alert me if the postie puts bulkier items in through the back. The other option is a false floor plate with a sensor that weighs the mail - would just need to make it actual snail proof.

Why stop there? Put a BT speaker in there that gets triggered by the sensor, with an "OM NOM NOM" cookie monster soound.

      • Can you do this easily? Need a dog bark (that sounds different each time) that is triggered by an ultrasonic sensor that goes through walls and detects anyone standing on the other side of the door etc.

        I can solder etc.

        asking for a friend.

        • If you're doing it inside, the easiest way might be to get a smart speaker (like Echo) that you can trigger to play as part of the detection automation routine.

          • @Astronaut Joe: Will look in to it. I do need it to be different each time though. Thanks.

I expected a more space-age answer from you though. :)

            • @Naigrabzo: What, having a near-equivalent of the Enterprise bridge computer on your counter top isn't space-age enough?

    • Letterboxes are favourite places for lizards, spiders, etc. Expect false triggering, which defeats the purpose!

      • If you use a hub like Smartthings you can also use a condition with a time range so it only triggers with motion and during a time range such as between 9-10am which is when my postie comes. Cuts down on false triggers.

        • AP Delivery time varies here. Only could limit to working hours.

From experience, larger Geckos can eat through plastic & set off motion detection.
"Can chew electrical wiring and damage appliances such as air conditioners."
          And tiny ants invade electronics.

Just simpler for me to walk outside to check or check when entering & leaving most days.

          • @INFIDEL: Username checks out 😁

          • @INFIDEL: And occasional small snakes - life in suburbia! Love it!! But Tech sometimes doesn't stand a chance!

          • @INFIDEL: That's unusual, where i live you can set your watch by the postie.

The problem i have is it's 150 meters line of sight from the house to the mail box. 3 years ago i tried setting up a mailbox notification but Zigbee, Zwave and Wifi wont make the distance. So it's a bit of mucking around trying XBee, LoRa etc unfortunately.

    • Door/window sensor is a much better option than motion sensor for letter box. That way you avoid false alerts.

    • +1

This is Passive Infrared. It detects heat differences, so would not be reliable for mail.

  • Is it compatible with Home Assistant, Zigbee?

  • Would be better if this was supported by Smartthings hub

  • +3

Just left Bunnings North Lakes, not on sale and won't price match, same older ones that require the hub. They said clearance is store specific.

  • I like that nrby website. is it just for bunnings?

    • +1

Pretty sure it's just a script that someone on here wrote for the ozbargain community

  • Smart Home Hub required = No Deal

If no Smart Home Hub required and connect to App = Good Deal

    • +1

With these, and my $3 door/window sensors the hub, even at $18, it's been an awesome deal.

      • Can you even buy the hub anywhere? It's not on their website now

  • how much did you buy the hub for?

I got grid connect that doesn't use the hub

  • This may or may not be compatible.
