        U bolt is best.

        If you want to use different types of locks, it means that any potential thief might need different tools to steal your bike. Practically speaking it would be a lot of extra weight to carry around as you ride. U Locks are recommended by the Lockpicking Lawyer

        Any of them will only deter impulse opportunity theft for an alternative target.

        In 2022, nothing except pot luck of Police driving by will stop those who have reconnoitered prior, spotted their target and come planned and prepared. An battery powered portable angle grinder deals with any/all in less than a minute.

            They aren't going to waste time and energy on cheapies & junkers. But if you've got a good bike, it's a target opportunistic or planned. You have no idea how organised and brazen some of these junkies/kids are.

            If I rode a bike in that price category, which isn't difficult these days,it wouldn't be left/parked anywhere out of my sight and 30 second dashing presence other than at home. I'd buy a $1k commuter to ride regularly and park at work if leaving it unattended was necessary -and still lock it.

        The idea is to deter. If they want your scooter/bike/etc they can steal it.

        So I always use 2 locks.. since everyone else uses 1 lock (or on the goldie sometimes no locks), thieves mostly take the easiest ones. Of course if you lock a $15k bike up in the same public place day after day for a long time, then you're more likely to get targeted.

        For detering thieves all three lock types are great for detering 99% percent of thieves. I've used a lock similar to the steel-o-flex to protect a SuperSport motorcycle worth over $10,000 for over a decade. The steel links are too thick to fit inside of bolt cutters. A U-lock takes the longest to angle grind because a thief has to cut twice through hardened steel as most quality U-locks have double ball bearings that prevent twisting/torsion. The steel-o-flex is a visual deterent but go the U-lock if you want the best physic deterent.

        No lock will "stop" a determined thief. Most thieves are opportunistic and carry light hand tools easily hidden in a backpack (eg. Cable cutter, hammer, crowbar). Most professional thieves aren't silly enough to risk gaol time spending 20 minutes loudly angle grinding, or seen carrying human sized giant bolt cutters, or leaving behind gas cylinder bottles. If the lock cannot be defeated in a few minutes the thief will move onto easier targets. Bicycles are everywhere.

        2 minutes is more than enough time for a bystander to pullout their mobile phone, take a picture and ring the police.

        The YouTube videos of angle grinding a U-lock in under 2 minutes are not realistic. They are usually best case scenario of inside a workshop held in a vice at optimal bench height with plenty space no obstructions. Real world is more like one hand/foot to hold the lock/bicycle, operator is hunched over close to ground for half an hour in a narrow space, at night requiring own lighting.

        For pro tips watch the police informational YouTube videos on how to properly use locks eg. Keep off the ground, shorten the length, etc.

        Exactly. The guy in the video even tries to use the bolt cutters unsupported and fails. In a real world scenario the U-lock will be high off the ground attached to the bike rack and he won't be able to brace the cutters the way he did.

        The idea is the lock will be a challenge and will require time and/or noise for the thief to break. Meaning so long as you locked up in an open, public area your bike won't be targeted.

        Sure you won't be safe against angle grinder attacks but that's not the use case.

      I would not too long ago have thought this to be an extreme example, but I had a friend lose a scooter from inside a cinema lobby from someone who casually cut the lock with bolt cutters and walked out with it. It's due to this that I will never trust anything enough to keep my expensive wheels safe so it's never going out of my sight unrestrained.

          Seems pretty big for an 8 year old and probably be too large to mount the holder to the cross bar. I'd get the smaller version of it and even then measure on a piece of paper with and additional few centimetres on each size to make sure it will fit.

    This is my bike recovered by the Queensland Police in Mackay. The thieves had to carry the bike because they couldn't get through the bike D lock and eventually dumped the bike due to not lifting at the gym and poor cardio. The thieves got through two other locks on the car bike carrier as well as damaging the bike carrier to get the bike.

    Although I already had very good bike locks, have already since significantly increased my bike security/locks, I will be going ahead with buying two of these bike locks in this OzBargain post. An extra lock for each wheel when travelling and can be used to lock up other items when at home.

    bizarre company. order 2 to get $1 express shipping, then they mail each out in seperate boxes via express. pretty sure it cost them more to mail both locks to me than I paid in total
