always wanted one of these kits but the $ almost always is the factor stopping me.

Pro tech toolkit should go for $90~ (+free shipping) when black Friday comes, right? Hard to justify the extra $20 for a magnetic mat. Or am I missing something?

    • These are supposedly their black friday deals.
Also I'm seeing the Pro Tech Toolkit for $116, how do you get for around $90, is there a code?

      • +2

No, I said it should be, based on previous years. I actually misremembered the dates on the older deals, they weren't on black friday. You're right that this might be their black friday deal for this year. Could still wait a bit and see.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/629958
And search "ifixit pro tech toolkit type:ozbdeal" and you'll see the other old deals. You obviously won't get the magnetic mat and bottle opener that come with this.

EDIT: Actually, it isn't worth buying this at all because of the delivery. Usually they offer free delivery on their sales. Would pass on this and HODL

        • Oh, I see. Looks like the RRP price has inflated then, that deal was a $10 off code, so was $99 at full price.
I guess if a similar deal popped up, you'd expect ~$105 for the kit alone now.

          Free shipping with code CELEBRATE.
Down to $92.79. Might sit on it for a few days before biting the bullet…

    • they were $92 with the included magnetic mat. I should know I got mine in 2018 during the black and blue (Black Friday) sale, they even knocked off the delivery via coupon for the sale at the time. Maybe their sales in 2022 will just be free delivery but no 25% discount. It's definitely gotta be inflation now after a few years. Still a good deal I reckon. My pro tech toolkit have lasted for yonks and I've abused them.

      • Did you find the magnetic mat useful?

        • no, not really… the plastic lid on the ifixit kit is reversible actually and has segmented areas to store screws and you can lift it up and move it around easily. I have a separate smaller magnetic pad I got from aliexpress for like $3 just slap it on the side of my PC. It works great for odd jobs because it's smaller than the ifixit pad.

their stuff is no doubt high quality… if it's worth the price is a completely different question…

    • -1

If you like repairing things as a hobby then you could easily justify the price
But for one or two odd repair jobs then probably not

      • +3

nah…it doesn't work that way.. we can easily get a proper set of tools for 1/3 of the price and gets job done just as good, might not as enjoyable…

        • +7

For some, a selling point is that they support the right to repair movement and advocacy

      • +2

idk my local phone repair shop uses the same mats i've got from aliexpress..

not saying we are of the same skill level… but i guess i'm not their target market.

Shipping kills it! $19.09 delivery for Pro Tech Bundle

  • +5

I have the Pro Tech Toolkit and its worth the money.

You can put together a similar kit for less money, but the quality of that is really variable whilst the iFixit stuff is top class.

If you only occassionally open stuff up you can probably get away with a no-name kit but honestly if you open a few things a year this is worth it.

i've always wanted one of these kits and sick of all the cheap, bad quality mini kits that you get when buying batteries etc.

life's too short and frustrating for bad tools

  • For those looking for alternative to Pro Tech bundle, I saw someone recommend this:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/ORIA-Precision-Screwdriver-Smartph…

However, I will say that I did see some people saying it's nowhere near as good as the ifixit kit (I'm leaning more towards that). But others say it's practically as good

  • used their galaxy s7 kit to replace the battery for the first time, damn samsung really abuses the balls on adhesive on their phones compared to other brands. had to use a heatgun just to release the adhesive when other brands ive worked with - a heating gel pack or hair dryer works.

  • Always wanted one of these set but the price $$ even at this 25% discount, it's still high.

  • I have one of their screwdriver sets, used to use it a few times a week at my old job, these days it's more like a few times a month.
Simply the best electronics screwdriver I've used, and I've gone through a tonne of them.
And their bits come with a lifetime warranty, I had a couple break over the years and lost a couple more (By 'lost', I mean a coworker 'borrowed' them and they never came back), and upon contacting ifixit they replaced all missing bits.

Good quality hardware, damn solid support.

Just saw the email from iFixit that they are giving free shipping for orders over $50, with "CELEBRATE" coupon code.
The pro tech toolkit has also been reduced to $92.79, https://australia.ifixit.com/products/pro-tech-toolkit

    • +2

I think that's because I asked about it an hour ago haha! The previous banner did not have the code and I had to email them.

      • :D thank you for that

      • This is awesome! Thanks heaps for doing that.

Just saw this comment and bought a bundle - as shipping costs were holding me back.
