The premise of all this is a comedy waiting to be written.

A summary: "A top level executive creates a plan to make their company more secure, by partnering with a top tier university on a cyber security degree, during the years of people who study, pass and are hired, the company suffers more and more data leaks as the comedy of inept management & executive leadership continue to ignore the qualified university employees whilst cutting corners, to save money & look good for their leaders, the twist is, that it's all backed up by an even more comedic useless government who has not the first idea of data security"

Optus know about cybersecurity risks, they chose not to put money into it to improve profits. The executives got a guaranteed payout by gambling with the risk of your data being stolen.

    • These courses are very basic. Nothing would have changed. It’s good for someone who wanna learn about cyber security tho.

  • Ok the link takes you to request info page, how do we register OP

        Champ! Thanks mate

    • be careful with this. I am unsure if this is a legit site. Ring La Trobe…go to their real website and ring their number to make sure before you do anything

  • +15

Will you get access to an .edu address?

    • +2

      I doubt it.
It’s just attending an online short course. Not enrolling as a student at the uni.

      • I think so too. I've done one of these micro-credentials at another university and didn't get a .edu email address. I would be very surprised if you got a .edu address by registering for this, you will likely just log in using the email you supplied.

    • +35

I like your thinking and I know where you are going with this question lol a true ozbargainer here people

  • +2

Okay, I'll be the first one to ask - which one is the best course?

    • +3

2nd one from my opinion but i wonder if we can apply for multiple.

      • Unfortunately not.

*The ‘First Course Free’ promotion is only available to participants who register for one of the following short courses during the month of October (1/10/22 – 31/10/22 inclusive): Cybersecurity Fundamentals; Cyber Technologies; Cyber Risk Management Fundamentals; Cybersecurity Program Development. This offer is limited to one short course per participant and is not to be used in conjunction with any other offer.

        • It might be possible if you use different email addresses. I would be surprised if La Trobe audit registrations for the courses to see if people with the same name have registered for multiple courses.

          • +2

@Ghost47: Weird - I added multiple and it said all were free?

Anyway, guess I'll see what I end up with in a few days.

            • +1

@Apostle0748: I hadn't seen that part and selected all three, we'll see what happens.

        • +4

An Ozbargainer must have at least 3 email addresses and 2 phone numbers.

    • +6

I think the best one would be the one you personally find the most interesting, after all these short courses are more about learning, IMO they don't hold much weight — if any — in terms of being an official certification that would help you get a job.

Some people might find the second course more interesting, other people might find the third or fourth course more interesting as they're more focused towards governance/management.

    • +1

None. I offer a better and shorter course - don’t use internet.

      • +3

…how do you access OzB ?

  • Pretty sure that these are just advertisements disguised as short courses.

    • Free is free

So, you're saying if I study these I will be more qualified than an Optus API engineer? Nice!

ABC News Daily: Hacking Optus: a beginner's guide (2022-09-27)
      https://australian-podcasts.com/podcast/the-signal-1/hacking…

The cyber attack on Optus was apparently so unsophisticated some analysts say a primary school student could have pulled it off.
So how did the telco fail to protect the data of millions of its customers?
Today, a cyber security expert on the overseas hacking gangs believed to be behind the breach.
      Featured:
Justin Warren, chair, Electronic Frontiers Australia

      • +5

Yeah it was a completely open API end point, not even remotely basic tier programming knowledge. Practically made an open pipe to the database which was encrypted at rest but then left completely open. Lmao.

        • So, did this person(s) get caught, because they got greedy and decided to grab everything?
Because if you say the doors were open, the person(s) could have visited repeatedly without anyone knowing.

I have no idea about the ins/outs of this story & just thinking, what gave this person(s) up.

          • +2

@whyisave: They got caught because they decided to pull 11 million details out. It was the sudden increased traffic out of that endpoint that raised alarms.

            Would've been gigabytes of data

While Optus didnt have the necessary security measures they should still have good visibility on the network and the traffic across it

            • @p1723:

It was the sudden increased traffic out of that endpoint that raised alarms.

Question is, do they reward that person for noticing this
or discipline them for noticing it "too late".

So far, there's no public news of who should be accountable.

              • @whyisave: Doubt it was the coder who noticed. It's probably network or sys admin people who noticed the traffic and then alerted upper management, who then issued an investigation into the specific team responsible for those APIs to find out who specifically was responsible. The coder themselves probably weren't aware they were the source until they were pulled up on it. He/she certainly wasn't aware of the endpoint being externally exposed in the first place, otherwise it would have been pulled offline before an incident happened

And Optus is a massive organisation, it's even possible that a team in Syd noticed it and the source of the fault is in another state

        • +3

So apparently the coder's family was being held hostage by his oppressive employer while he was working on the site, so he wrote-in this weak spot. Oh wait, that's the story of Rogue One (a satisfying explanation to the ridiculous exhaust flaw of the Death Star). I hope Optus comes up with an equally imaginative excuse, in less than 30 years :)

          • @Cheapkiwi: Lol don't give them any ideas. I'm sure it'll be some contractor/outsourced fault.

  • Thanks OP!

All the ITMasters short courses are free. If u do 3 of those u get credit for an elective subject towards Grad Cert or Master etc degrees in cybersec.

Also check out the CyberGap scholarship. U get 1 year for free @ cybersec degrees etc. Apps close 31 October.

    • I don't get how the cyber gap program works. You need proof that you're enrolled to apply, but there's no way you could apply for and enrol in a university degree by October 31.

      • +1

I think the idea is you're already enrolled.

Like for example I'm currently doing a degree that is in the list of ones they accept. So I can apply. I don't think this is to encourage people to take up a certificate/degree, but moreso to try and get people who are already studying to think about applying for a cyber security role once they finish. Whereas otherwise it wouldn't really even seem like an option/there's too much uncertainty about what the role is.

I applied last year and failed lol. They sent out emails to everyone telling them they were successful by accident, so I had my hopes up a bit. Not sure if I want to apply again

        • Ah okay that makes sense. That's lame that they screwed everyone last time. You should still apply though lol. Free money is free money.

  • -1

Will this grant me access to Optus data?

    • +6

You dont need a certificate to access optus data.
A 5 year old could give you access

      • +1

This exactly. Annoys me when they said it was on the darkweb when it was literally on a site anyone can access in Australia with a standard web browser lol.

        • The worst part is that those details would have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times by now, by people 'wanting to see if theyre on the list' and other malicious individuals looking to bank on it.

Even now Optus has refused to let those 10k people know that they were within the direct exposure. It's such a big fail in incident response. By the time they got their act together everyone would've been scammed

          • @p1723: Imo the AFP are complicit in this also, they know the 10,200 people and could and should (imo) contact them directly, even if just a short explanation and to a link to a page on the police website explaining it further.

They have put out a media statement saying they have contacted banks to ensure that those people have their accounts more heavily watched. I believe there was a law recently passed allowing for IDs to be shared directly with banks "to help with protecting people". But it appears to me (from the surface) these details are passed regardless of whether or not the person is a customer of the bank. I guess they are online now but it still seems a bit strange that this is the best they can come up with.

I could be completely wrong though.

Back to what you're saying though, ultimately Optus have been slack (at best, or just negligent) even after the hack. Those people should've been notified. A first year software developer could've turned it into a .csv within a few hours and they could have just fed that into their text messaging system. There's no excuse for not letting people know straight away, none at all.

If it was about not creating panick they would've been clearer the first time about exactly what ID was taken too and what needs to be replaced.

            • +1

@lancesta: It wasn't until I forced it out of a Optus app chat guy that I found out both my current Medicare and driver's license details were comprised. I did so over the course of an hour or two and stressing to them that I had multiple active IDs with them across different states and wanted to know which were effected

Optus as a whole has never let me know pre-emptively, despite saying to the media that they will contact all affected Medicare people (and on a separate occasion drivers license people).

I had to take self initiative to apply credit bans to cover this period of ghosting by Optus, and replace all my cards asap

              • @p1723: That's appalling. I might have to try something like that, don't have it but mentioning multiple IDs may make them check properly. They have definitely been terrible at communicating and I think importantly they're still haven't made it right and told people clearly what was taken.

It's really frustrating when they keep saying to the media they're keeping everyone updated when they're not. Actually get livid everytime it is suggested.

Well I guess I better talk to them but it's super frustrating when they're so slow to respond over chat and keep sending off generic rubbish

Doesn't inspire confidence, with a reference at the bottom failing to load the "roadmap" resources.

Need to modify the URL to include the www. Someone hasn't configured their web server correctly.

    • I'm wondering this too! Will this change my WAM?

I strongly doubt it, because these are run as professional education courses, which are typically separate from undergraduate programs.

  • Any kind of penalty if you sign up, then DON'T complate the course?

I always want to do these then run out of time, then forget I started it.

    • So can I study doctor courses from them??

Something wrong asking for $300 to register :)

    • Same issue

    • That’s weird. I signed up to one of the courses shortly after posting the deal and got my email this morning with login info.

Maybe share a screenshot or something? Maybe after they got Ozbargained they put up a pay wall.

    • I am not sure if this site is legit…….The webpage isn't right and the URL seems wrong as well for their online courses

  • Do they give you a edu email address, gawd hope so.

  • Question for those working in the cyber security workforce. Which would be the course suitable to work towards becoming a SOC Analyst?

    • +1

CISSP could be overkill, but say that you're studying for the exam.

    • +1

      Either of the first two

  • is this a legit site? The web address doesn't seem right for their online courses.

Don't do it until you double check with La Trobe this is real… I think it might be a fake site

  • I can confirm the site is legit. I got email from the La Trobe University. However, all free short courses are gone and the only one left is Cyber Technologies and asking $300 for online course. No more free.

  • Has anyone got more than 1 course approved? Either ysing single email or multiple emails?

All I got is this 3 days ago
      Thank you for registering.
Course information and login details will be emailed to you once access to the online course has been granted. Access will be granted in 2-3 business days.

No online course access granted yet

  • How to apply for these courses gang?

  • Anyone received any actual login details? I'm still waiting for more than a week.

    • Yeah got my login details VIA email.
