    How bright is the screen?

    • +8

      250nits

    • +13

Not sure why you've been downvoted as it's a valid technical question. 🤷‍♂️

Can't find the model on the HP website at all, but did find this website that says it's 250 nits. So it's a standard screen, that should be OK indoors/darker spaces.

Also found that Officeworks answered a question advising that the Keyboard is not backlit, so another consideration for people who would like this feature.

Edit: @tpopi answered while I was on another page 👍

Anon downvoting sucks and has always sucked. That's why. People who don't like what they're reading like to shoot the messenger and when they can do so anonymously their worst human instincts kick in!

    • +1

      It’s no Einstein.

      • It will do well in the dceu. So dark.

  • Does this charge and display using USB-C?

    • I doubt it.

    • +1

Total guess here, but I’ve not seen any at this price point that do.

    • +1

      Bought and no

      Just regular charger

      • Will it charge on a USB-PD charger though? Some with regular chargers still do

        • No because that's not connected to the power supply

    • I don't see why not, most laptops with a USB-C port can also be charged via it.

      • +1

        Some can some can't

        This one can't

The USB-C is data only and doesn't feed to power source

        • Such a shame really.

  • +8

Wow, I'd be right on this if I needed a new lappy! that's amazing specs for that price! why the f do they bother putting windows S mode on any high-performance CPU as you have to swap out of it immediately?!

    • Cost of windows s?

If I was cynical I would say it's M.S. trying to make people who know little about computers to use Edge and buy from the MS store

Would be a great value BYOD school laptop if it was 14". With great iGPU for kids to do light gaming

Thanks for the suggestion. I updated the post with a YouTube link of the 5625u, on HP Pavilion 15, iGPU gaming.

  • Could someone please tell me the Intel equivalent to the Hexa-Core 2.3 GHz AMD Ryzen 5 processor?

Refer to my post with the benchmark comparison near the bottom.

      • Ya sorry just saw that lol

Is this machine decent for regular office email and spreadsheet work

        • +1

For Office, Email and Spreadsheet work the Ryzen CPU would be overkill. However at the price point it's a great deal.

          • @shellshocked: Would you pay couole of hundred dollars for lenovo thinkpad for light office uses? Because lenovo has good reputation on longevity and their built quality? Thanks :)

            • +1

@watupman: Hmmm.. the lower end lenovo stuff, has an absolutely shocking reputation…
Plus the support in Australia, has been found very very lacking…by many people..
Some of the higer end prodcuts are pretty amazing.. but when things go wrong,, you are pretty much. screwed…

                • +1

@watupman: half the amount of ram, 8gb versus 16gb
half the amount of storage space 256gb versus 512gb
                  slower processor

                  and $1199 versus $799… so 50% more..

No doubt the X1 nano will be a nicer machine…and lighter but unless you have $400 more and prepared to compromise heavily on storage and speed..

                  • +3

@Kelvin: At $799.. this machine, is going ot be very very difficult to best in terms of price / speed and performance…

I wish I could find a reason to buy one, just to see whats its like overall….

                  • @Kelvin: Ill be just using it for multiple tabs on chromes, youtube, words and pdfs. You think this laptop is an overkill man?

                • +1

@watupman: X1 would be a much better build and good components, like a better screen.
However the 8 GB RAM probably isn't upgradable and the 11th gen i5 is pretty weak but sucks the battery.

                  • +1

                    @Phoebus: totally agree…
the 8gb /256gb configuration is is barely acceptable these days…
for any sort of longevity, you are going to need 16gb / 512gb.. or have the ability to upgrade easily..

                    I have a nice dell 9380 , 8th gen 16gb / 512gb, which I have had for 4 years.. . still works well…and keeps up with most things… (needed a new cmos battery.. which I DIY myself)…

If it was an 8gb / 256gb machine.. I would have probably had to ditch it long ago…

It would be nice to know if the ram / SSD is upgradable on this machine… if you could go the 32gb / and SSD upgrade later when required… this machine, will probably be future proofable for another 3-4 years.

                    • @Kelvin: Thanks for your reply my man! Ive owned couple of lenovos and they lasted for years! Thats why i was leaning towwards lenovo. I was worried about this HP laptop's built quality and longevity. You think this machine will last long enough? Thanks heaps man

    • You'll find it commonly pitted against the 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 or the 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U.

The Intels aren't Hexa core CPU's though, just in the same price/performance range.

  • +1

    Price aside

    What's the better machine

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/727943

    Or this?

    • +1

Depends on a few different factors.

Example, performance wise you'll find the newer Ryzen will have the edge on most tasks (benchmark/synthetic), but in day to day use, you'll likely not notice a 'huge' difference. Although saying that, battery performance will probably be crap on the Intel.

In terms of features and what you want, the Intel will beat it, starting off with the fact it has a Touchscreen, WiFi 6, probably better built compared to the HP.

  • does anyone who have this laptop, able to confirm if kb is backlit? even though a rep said no on the page, i just want to confirm that is the case. thanks

  • +4

Worth mentioning that the build quality of these machines are garbage. Don't expect it to hold up well.

    • +1

      Will it last 2 years?

      • +1

Keeping it like a princess should go beyond 2 years

        • Haha keep in the box unopened

      • Definitely will last. Just be gentle with the chassis. The screen hinges most importantly have to be treated with care.

    • Why would you say that? Have you owned this laptop before?

      • +2

I work in a computer repair shop. These are notorious for hinge issues, cracked chassis, keyboard issues.

Edit: I have one in at the moment actually - Intel variant from last year, screen has developed a flickering issue

        • How about Thinkpad T series? Do you see them much?

          • +1

@nfr: No, those are solid. E-Series is decent too. Would rather a refurb business-grade laptop than a brand new HP Pavillion any day of the week.

          • @nfr: Lenovo thinkpad are rock solid.

        • Thanks man! Ill just chip in couple of hundreds dollars more purchase lenovo x1 nano since i heard their built quality is quite good

        • @stephendt
Not a laptop but a HP AIO that I bought recently is absolute junk considering the build quality and performance. I'm comparing it to the 10 year old Toshiba AIO that I replaced. Now that was quality!

  • Hi OP

Thanks for posting the offer. How do you check for stock in Officeworks website? I'm after this laptop but cant find stock anywhere by changing my store postcode:
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/asus-vivob…

  • +2

I may have prematurely pulled the trigger. My C&C order is ready for pickup but I'm having doubts. The lack of backlit keyboard is a major deal breaker for me. Went in store but there wasn't any display models. There were 2 other similar Intel models and 1 has backlit but the other didn't.

    • managed to find the closest model - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufkM8R5uc2c
looks like there's no backlit kb.
will be picking up and then returning right away.

    • You have like 30days to return unopened

    • Yeah you definitely need back-lit keyboard especially for laptop keys.

  • Can u hackintosh this?

    • I didn't even know you could hackintosh laptops. I just googled it. Looks intense. You need to get a compatible wireless card even.

Question… why would you want to? I've used macOS, Windows and Linux (running GNOME, XFCE, Pantheon, Budgie, MATE), and I find macOS the most difficult and unintuitive of the bunch. The only thing I find going for it are the native apps.

    • Why would you bother?

      • Exactly. Why the f would anyone bother. Lol

  • Hmmm.. trying to find out if the ram or SSD is upgradable in these..
    pretty much no info around….

    Great Price though…

    • I think so. I purchased it today and found this video:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjTXP69g2Jw

for myself, i really dont need anything more than 16GB RAM, but SSD is upgradable too.

      • Hello, could you please confirm if keyboard is backlit?

        • Don’t know about kb but I guess the light from screen, should be enough to work in the dark

        • +1

          Nope, no backlit keyboard.
I dont like the keyboard at all. The key travel is a bit different. But it is all plasticy feeling.
Screen has a warmer tone to it. Trying color calibration didn't work.

I realized these issues coming from Zephyrus G14. Switched from Zephyrus as I was having not good enough battery life and didn't game on it at all

  • First thing, turn off Windows S mode, you'll have a short time to do it without paying & you'll have to format it anyway.

S mode locks all apps outside of the Windows/Microsoft Store. It costs money to unlock it after a very short period from setting up the device.

    • AFAIK, there's no charge. Got any links to pages that reference this cost or time period?

      • There was a charge, but it looks like it's just for Pro S, But the format part should still be the case.

  • Thanks OP. Got 5 from 5 different shops this morning

To anyone who is still interested, here's my review after 24-hr usage:

Display: It looks brighter at its max brightness but has a warmer tone to it. Whites look different compared to my Dell S2721D monitor. Not complaining, but the colors feel washed out. Not a bad deal considering the specs.

Performance: Amazing, running 20-25 chrome tabs and still was able to play Forza 4. The laptop runs smooth. But I'm hoping to upgrade the SSD to a faster one, preferably a Samsung 980 NVMe drive. Current drive is SK Hynix BC711 (which doesn't have a good benchmark.

In overall, performance is all that I was looking for in a laptop at such a low price. I will upgrade to a faster RAM and SSD hopefully in the black friday sales. But, you're after solid performer, this is it.

Ports: I'm happy that it has all necessary ports like 2x USBs, 1x USB-C, 1x HDMI and even a SD card reader. No it doesn't support charging via USB-C port. I wish it had one more USB-C port.

Battery: it has a 40,642 mAh battery. Can't complain about the battery life. I had a Zephyrus G14 with 4-5 hours of battery life. But, since I was not into gaming or video editing, 4-5hrs on a single full charge didn't cut it for me. Compared to that, this laptop has great battery life and I reckon it should serve up to 7-8 hours of usage. I was doing an assignment with 20 tabs open with YT, and till midnight, around 4 hours mark it gone down to 62%. So, pretty good battery.

Other than these, the laptop doesn't get hot, fans are quiet for normal tasks. CPU load is around 10-20% for what I'm doing (writing reports, assignments, browsing). So, pretty much office apps and chrome.

I'm quite happy with my purchase. But, typing on this keyboard feels abysmal. I'm using external keyboard 80% of the time, so, a little relieved. But, yeah keyboard, speaker and display are the compromises you're making for solid A+ performance. I'm not sure about the build quality as it's all plastic but I believe you can get a couple of years worth of use out of it easily.

I'd be happy to test anything or answer any questions.

    • +1

Ya it's great 10sec cold start to log in screen

Prob not worth upgrading and save ya money. better use as it then for a little bit of extra performance.

Especially from a warranty perspective who knows if there are any void warranty stickers inside.

      That's my take

      • +1

Yeah, that's probably a good idea considering the build quality on this.

    • Can you check if it's eligible for the HP/Dropbox, 100Gb for 12 months promotion.

  • now, that's a great deal
    thanks op

  • +3

Have just purchased for a friend, can confirm very plasticy cheap feeling build. I have never handled such a rattly plasticy sounding laptop keyboard of this degree =P it's an experience. The top/bottom ballancing is awkward, you must hold down the base with one hand (or finger, if you are inherently ninja), while using the other to open the lid/screen.
Nothing else to complain about, great spec value especially on the cpu + ram.

    Good Post OP!

    • +1

yeah they are copying cars for sure

      everything is plastic

  • +3

Pulled the trigger and bought one after missing out on the Intel NUC M15 Evo laptop from Bing Lee.
No backlit keyboard but that's fine with me. Keyboard has a different feel than other keyboards and it will take some time to get used to it but it does the job not to mention it has a numerical pad which is handy.
A breeze to set up and performance seems to be pretty good in the limited time I have used the laptop.
Fan kicks in for most of the time even when the laptop is idling/not being used.
Overall, I am happy with the purchase and thanks for posting.

  • Why expired? Still going

Can the USB C port support a second display
