For about ~$300 more and some waiting for a sale you can get a Bdb+nz!

    • For well-under $1700 you can buy a Rancilio set-up (Silvia + Rocky) plus a good tamper, tamping mat and beans.

I don't understand the fascination with these Breville and Sunbeam machines. Maybe it's the buttons and lights? Maybe it's the available colours. But it's certainly not quality or value for money.

      My 2.2c worth (incl GST)

I like when my mum and dad come over, they can wake up in the morning and make their own coffee. Not everyone is a born barrister. The oracle is easy to explain to them and use with minimum fuss.

        • +3

That makes sense. Sounds like you went into it with well-managed expectations.

Many people (read: including my sister in law) buy these machines thinking they'll end up with effortless God-tier espresso and/or zero maintenance overhead.

2-3 years later they're back to a $99 pod machine, having given up on maintenance, servicing and persevering with the quirks.

            @[Deactivated]: I agree with this dude ^

I was a barista all through uni; I've used the AeroPresses; I've done pods (quit - environmental concerns) and I've had these machines.

They're good, not great. You need to actually read the instructions, and then configure/maintain the machine. It's not hard, but you need to do it. If not; or you get a shitty machine, you end up constantly refunding it (I'm on my fifth?), but hey, they don't complain.

There are four 'flavours' of machine - mini, maxi, pro and oracle. Due to the free upgrades, I've tried all of them lol. The mini is pointless - no grinder. The maxi is the best bang for your buck, no frills but you get everything needed. The pro adds pointless LEDs and 'timers'. The oracle adds a second boiler and automation - the boiler is nice if you make a lot of coffees, but in reality, it's a huge waste of money. The automation just grinds/tamps and froths milk. It takes 15s to grind/tamp and press 'start', and like 5s to pour milk and position under the wand… so you're spending like $1200+ over the maxi for some fancy leds and 10-20s of time saved.

@TogTogTogTog: Thanks for the insight - looking at switching out my old nespresso which isn't working as well these days - when you say Mini, Maxi etc. where does the Barista Express by Breville fit in? I've had no experience with one of these machines before! Cheers

              • +1

@iceborg: I suspect he'd put this in the Maxi category.
I've just purchased my second Barista Express. The previous one lasted about a decade of day in-day out use, making a min. 3 doubles a day. Minimal service required beyond cleaning, changing the grouphead seal & water filter.

The Express it's replacing has cracked hoses internally, and i noticed a touch late that it's been leaking (and now pissing) steam internally. I'll likely open it up and replace/repair what I can, and use it as a backup/holiday machine for when we go away (or offer it to my folks).
Either way, the "broken" one will either be repaired or be used as parts for the new one when it begins to break.

@astevens: Edit: Minis - basically no grinder. You want a grinder, might as well go all-in-one.

All the parts are built by the same Chinese manufacturer so it doesn't matter if you're getting either -

They're both about $600. The quality has dramatically decreased in my opinion - mainly because I got exposed to different year models (thus the free upgrades). The older ones lasted ages, grinded perfectly etc. these newer ones the grinders are worse, the positioning is slightly different and they fill up at the back.

Have had a hose crack, wand dribbling and two machines fail after 5s and beeping 5 times (no one can answer this issue lol). I'm thinking it's Canberra cold followed by a hot coffee in the morning that's cracking the hoses shrug.

@TogTogTogTog: That's great insight!! Can i ask which is the maxi model? I can't seem to find it

              • +1

@HappyPooPants: Sorry was mixing and matching between Sunbeam/Breville since they're all blur together lol.

I'm still sticking with them, when you get one working and it goes for years you can't really beat them. Fresh coffee, try all the beans on OzBargain, saves you $5/day and it's the same quality + environmentally friendly.

Get a little bin, dump the coffee grounds in compost (not worms/live stuff), leave for 3+mths, give to plants :)

Not everyone is a born barrister.

True. Usually you need a law degree and then to pass the Bar exam.

Have you ever tried a coffee made by one?

        • Yes.

@harryzee: I tend to ask for a Pepsi Max or sparkling mineral water instead of my sister-in-law's attempts at an espresso-based drink.

What's the difference between this and the 2400W version.

    • +7

      600W

    • The heating system.

    • Its not 1800W, its been confirmed by someone who received their machine.

      • So what's the difference with this model? BES980BTR2JAN1

        https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/breville-the-oracle-semi-auto…

2 cappuccinos in only 90 seconds. I wonder if the one OP posted can do the same.

        • Different colours, I believe one is matt black and one is gloss. You can check exact colour name. The OP one might not include the bonus redemption offer (you have to double check).

          • @huntabargain: Ok so basically the machine is the same except for the colour.

  • I have a Breville Parista Pro, and it's great. I was tempted to upgrade to an Oracle for obvious reasons, but then I found out that, unlike the Barista Pro, which has a 3 second warm-up time, you have to turn the Oracle on and let it warm up for ~10 mins before making a coffee. I much prefer the "instant" accessibility of the Barista Pro!

(otherwise I would take this offer up lol)

    • Any coffee machine requires few minutes to warm up including group-head, internal pipes, etc. to produce good cup. If you think you ready to go when light turns on after few seconds, then sorry to say you been mislead by marketing department.

      • With the barista Pro, I always do 1 cup purge before every coffee extraction (I think as instructed) to warm up the group head and ensure any residue are out. Should this suffice?

        • All the Coffee review experts recommend to wait at least 10-15 min to warm a machine. You could mitigate this to some extend by running couple of empty shots into say your cup to also warm the cup. I don't know if will be as effective or no. But if you have thermometer you can measure the temperature of water in the cup of both ways and see the difference.

  • I have the small sunbeam coffee dual one, just wonder is this machine much faster? The milk frosther much more powerful?

    Thank

    • SUNBEAM CAFÉ SERIES DUO ESPRESSO MACHINE ?
This is double thermoblock technology not double boiler, so temperature control / stability not as good. But it can steam and brew at same time and has other nice features eg milk temp gauge, pressure gauge, larger 3lr water tank and I think can take pods as well. For the price its excellent value.

The Breville Oracle does last, mines at over 9500 shots and still going. Just had it in for its first service in 3 years due to leaking from the group head and got it all fixed, back to new condition now!

    • May I ask where you get it service and roughly how much for servicing?

      • JA Appliances in Coburg, they'll charge $55 when you drop it off and give you a ring later on what you're owing, a rough cost to perform the cost and deduct the deposit from the total amount. If you're looking to get yours serviced I recommend them.

They estimated it might be a 3 week turn around time when I gave them a call, they got it turned around in 7 business days which was a plus

Mine was in a pretty poor state as there was a slow leak, and caused internal corrosion on some replaceable parts and the pump, seals and lines needed replacement. I don't know how much a standard service is, but mine came to $600 which I would estimate is more than a standard service.

Great thanks, I'm not too far from there too.

  • You can also stack with $75 cashback from Cashrewards, just bought mine for $1624.15.
