[SA] Brother HL-L3230CDW Colour Laser $269 + $19.95 Delivery @ GetBrother

250

I need a multifunction colour laser but found this, Brother's base-level colour laser printer. OfficeWorks lists it at $324 at the moment, so this is $55 better, $35 with delivery. Haven't been able to discover much about getbrother.com.au, either positive or negative, but knowing you guys it's probably price match fodder anyway. The retailer matches their ABN and have been around about 5 years at least.

Please note - stock only in South Australia. Any orders placed from QLD, NSW, WA or VIC will be placed on backorder. ETA is Early September 2022.

BTW, OfficeWorks is my best find for the MFC-L3750CDW at $448

Brother lasers are pretty rock solid. My MFC-9335CDW is ~8 years old and still prints perfectly. Toners are generally about $100 for 4 (C,M,Y,K, of course), but they last for years for general home printing.

    • How does it fair with printing photos? Is it terrible quality or acceptable?

      • It does ok, but no consumer/small business laser is going to give you great photos. When we used to print photos at Fairfax it'd be on the $100k printers that take up half a room.😆

If you want good photos at home, it's bubble jet (eek!) or some sort of dye sublimation printer, unfortunately. You're really better off paying to get them printed.

        • Well I'm not expecting studio quality, but I guess just more curious how it fairs in terms of output, like if it's ridiculously hideous looking the printouts or are they passable print outs.

          • @squaredonut: They are passable, but not something that you would keep in a family album.

if you want to print just photos, it's best to go officeworks to get those printed, as those are specialised and have better quality paper.

trouble with printing at home is that you have to 1) invest in expensive specialised paper and 2) invest in expensive photo quality printer and both have high running costs associated with it. the savings isn't typically there.

most colour laser do 'okay' in printing photo, but nothing to shout about (and sometimes even outright disappointing).

        • Yeah even when I had a reasonably high end business colour laser I always went to OW for photos.

    • Hi, which toner do you get? The genuine ones are well over $400+ a set.

Honestly, I'd have to look for the spare ones I have, but it's just the generic ones from a printer media supplier.

  • i think this is a good deal for an entry colour laser, and it's brother. my brother mono laser is hitting 12 years old.

  • no black colourway :(

A query for anyone who has this unit: is there a simple "one touch" scan option or similar? Ideally I can scan to a google drive without having to stand around pushing too many buttons.

    • +2

It's just a printer, there is no scan option

    • MFC-L3750CDW is the model you'd need, it has a scanner.

Don't know about how many button pressing is required though.

      • I have that one, its not smart or anything, goes to the 'my pictures' part of the pc its plugged into or on usb

        • a "W" in the model name indicates it's has wireless connectivity.

as to where the scanner is saved, it highly depends on your configuration settings.

          • @slowmo: Yep and the wireless connectivity is garbage and works 1/10 of the time.

I'm speaking about the default settings….

            • @teacherer: fwiw, it doesn't get any better with prosumer models.

only managed printers can be somewhat decent, and if you worked in orgs that used them, you will agree that's a very low bar.

  • Is this a good printer for casual use? Reviews on officeworks dont look so good

    • +2

Its 4.1 stars. How is that not considered good? You got 75 ppl giving 5 while only 11 gave 1 star

I've had a Brother MFC-L2700DW for several years now and I can confirm it's the dog's bollocks.

I laugh in the general direction of inject users.

    • +3

Hey man, leave the druggies alone.. what'd they ever do to you?

      • Yes, I would have assumed he'd laugh at the ink jet owners

      • Haha I'm leaving it

    • I don't get it, you've had it removed?

  • Did anyone try price matching with Office Works?

We recently had an issue where after a power outage (eg switch gets tripped etc), the printer displayed "No Toner". It affects quite a lot of consumer Brother laser printers where owners have replaced original cartridges with third party ones (which would be the majority of us, given replacing all the toners in a colour laser is more expensive than buying a brand new printer).

You can read more about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/comments/mprkms/no_toner_m… - th culprit seems to be a recent Brother firmware upgrade. FYI the workaround they suggest of putting in a new battery didn't work for me, but when I mentioned it to the third party seller Inkstation, they happily sent me a replacement that works fine. They also said it was due to a recent Brother firmware upgrade.

  • I got mine a few weeks ago from Umart - click & collect from Milton. Paid $297 so a bit more expensive than this deal when you consider shipping to BNE. Obviously if you’re in SA and you can collect from their premises it’s a better deal.

Printer is decent enough and easy to setup. I really like the duplex setting so you save paper without having to manually flip paper around. Will probably buy non Brother toners when required. Hopefully it lasts as long as the 8 year old Samsung it replaced.
