Printer may be cheap, but the more important question is how much are those toners?

    • +5

In the original deal, someone mentioned ~$80 price. Have to find out myself. ut my old B&W printer is on its last leg, so this was great timing for an upgrade. not printing huge jobs anyway.

OK, found this set of 4 toners for $148: https://www.inkstation.com.au/4-pack-nongenuine-alternative-…

      • +5

VIP20 coupon code for 20% off. $118.70 delivered after code.

      • +5

        Good deal
And can confirm, Ink Station is legit.

Ends up ~$365 for 4800 double sided prints, 4c per sheet
Though, correct me if Im wrong

      • +2

Maybe just buy a couple of spare printers instead. Similar price.

  • Thanks OP, order placed.

  • Yes can't see any toner is listed

    • From another site selling the same printer it says
      What's in the box?
Printer is shipped with toners that do BCMY = 1200 prints
      Power cord
      Disk, (manual + Drivers)
      https://www.printersupermarket.com.au/Products/LaserPrinters…
      Also has toner prices listed
Compatible 4 Pack ECOSYS Kyocera P5021/M5521 Toner Cartridge Bundle (TK-5234K,C,M,Y) $386.85

      • +1

I just paid $85 for colour + black toner for my printer from inkstation.
Any reason why one would buy $386 toner instead of the cheap stuff?

        • how many papers can you print with that 85 dollar toner?
im still in the inkjet camp

          • +1

@striker5950: I looked at the official one and it says 1200 pages of each colour. (whatever that means). Pretty sure colour laser printers block you from printing if just one of the three colour toners are out.

            • @ATangk: Some if not most colour lasers have black toner.

            • @ATangk:

Pretty sure colour laser printers block you from printing if just one of the three colour toners are out.

              So do inkjets

          • @striker5950: I don't know, haven't tried it yet (still on the toner which came with the (used) printer)

        • +1

I bought compatible ones from inkstation and other sellers from eBay a few times. Apparently, they are remanufactured using recycled toners. They didn't serve me well, running out of juice way less than claimed, printing out some blank or dark strips, and the worst, over half of the compatible toners leaking poisoning printing powders. After I've experienced so much trouble and not saved much money (or even spent more due to shorter life spans) on compatible ones, I switched back to genuine ones.

Maybe I just had bad luck …

        • Did you use /try them? and which printer brand Kyocera? I heard some printers have software update that block/stop printers from printing when using aftermarket tonners.

  • Dammit. My $99 Ricoh from a deal ages ago finally packed it in. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239614

Had to buy a replacement retail grrr.

I'm still tempted by this though as a spare. Hmmm.

    • I had one of these years ago.
Cost of toners was over the top though so moved on.

      • I refilled my own toners so it was actually quite cheap to run. But the rollers on the toner carts eventually crapped out and it was uneconomical to buy new ones since they are very expensive due to having the rollers on each cart.

        • Actually you're correct - it wasn't the toners - it was something like failing.

    Can this scan?

    • +4

Not yet :-) It is a colour laser printer.

    • +16

      It scan't, no

      • +1

        Printer puns. Nice…

        • +1

Yeah, don‘t brother, none are any good

    • +1

You better find an ink tank MFC from Brother or Epson which gives you cheap printing with scanning function.

      • I have normal cheap canon ink jet, but as I don't use it often ~ for few months at time, the cartridge dries out and cant print properly (using aftermarket cartridges). Just wonder if laser printer would have this issue? I guess the ink tank MFC will be the same?

        • +1

Laser print will be totally fine if you don't use it that often. For ink-tank printer, it's a bit better than the traditional ink-jet printer but still has a high chance to block the ink-jet head instead of drying out the ink tank if you don't use it. In this case, I would suggest to get the laser printer and maybe use your phone to scan the documents.

          • @OMG: or buy a laser MFP, though I guess you're looking at $100-200 more than this.

For phone scanning, get the Microsoft Lens app: Android or iOS

        • +1

I had EXACTLY the same problem. Great multi inkjet printer but every time I would go to print there would be no ink.
Bought a huge Brother Multi laser and after about 4 years now I only replaced the toner once. It cant dry up but it can go hard (the powder can clump so im told), but im yet to experience any issues.

  • +1

Wow. Been hangin' for a laser deal for quite some time now, and it's colour to boot so, thanks heaps OP.

  • +2

does this have wifi? cant seem to find any info on that

    • this!

    • +2

Just plug the printer directly into your router via Ethernet if possible and then you can wirelessly connect to it

      • Genuine question, how does that work, wouldn't the router need to support the ability to accept the print jobs and send it to the printer?

        • +2

The router can accept data to and from every device on your network … that's it's entire reason for existing :-)

The printer just appears on your network as a printer, and your machines can send data to it.

        • it would only need to manage that if you plugged in via USB.

  • Is this a scanner? descriptions are vague but mention 'Scan to USB' but not on the feature list as a scanner

    • +1

No. Someone at Kyocera stuffed up.

  • does this printer able to print with only black cartridge? or does it have to use all 4 mixed.

    • +1

It needs all toners installed, and each time it prints a little bit of the colour toners get shoved into the waste bottle, which consumes the colours as well. All part of the printing process cannot stop it.

  • My Samsung laser printer is still going stong

    • Why so cheap? I thought laser printer is more expensive?

    • Maybe there's some paper stuck inside?

    • Same! Wish I bought more lol

    • Mine too and still got a spare, but not colour.

    • Ha ha yeah I have the same one from the same deal. I buy the toner at seven hills ink on eBay and works a treat. Been through about 6 toners and still works a treat

  • +1

Bought one, got charged $140.19. Cheers OP

  • Good till the toner runs out.

  • Refills aren't cheap even going the reset, refill route.

    https://www.tonerstop.com.au/kyocera-p5021cdn?__cf_chl_tk=Ll…

  • Their website much better 😁

  • It supports AirPrint, does it mean the printer has to be ethernet connected to the wifi router?

    • +1

Yes, it has no in-built wifi.

  • Wonder how many pages are its starter toner ?

  • +1

Thanks, shipping within metro Melbourne is $10, so ~$140 Inc shipping.

Wasn't going to grab one as I want a scanner too, but colour laser with scanner is going to cost more than this + scanner. Cheaper to get an inkjet with a scanner than a standalone scanner, so I may even do that and just use it for scanning. I hate inkjets, been using a $100 mono laser printer for about 8 years, got 4 x $10 cartridges from ebay when I bought it and still have 1.5 left (I think I lost 1). Printed thousands of pages when I was studying, but just use occasionally now.

    • Be careful as I use to have an ink-jet MFC which does not scan when any one of the inks is empty.

    • Did you come across good laser printer with scanner?

      • +1

Nah, they all seem a bit expensive. Could do with a scanner at the moment, so I've just grabbed this for now and bought the printer in the deal.

  • +2

No scanner, no WiFi, no dice.

    • +2

Kyocera ECOSYS MA2100cwfx Colour Multifunction Laser Printer has scanner & WIFI for $475

      • At that point just buy a brother mfc off good guys commercial and it'll have way cheaper refills

        • I have cannon inkjet MFC but as I don't use it often enough, the aftermarket cartridges / printing head dries out and print quality is terrible even though I did deep clean, hence I thought to consider laser printers with scanner.
Is the Brother you referring to is laser or inkjet? (laser is OOS)I heard Brother laser printers require original toner to operate as the software will block the aftermarket toner?

          • +1

@huntabargain: I've read a lot of forum posts of people buying after market toner and it being fine. Worse case just don't update your printer once you get it, or transfer the chip to the new toner. I haven't ran out of ink yet but I'll be trying inkstation aftermarket toner.

The Brother MFC L3745CDW is a colour laser for $330 on good guys commercial. All brother printers have been limited availability since covid so you just have to check back every couple of weeks, that's how I got mine.

            • @Ibz: Thank you, I finally managed to buy one and just picked it, you get a lot of real estate for great price. I was checking every second day and finally manage to snap the last one. BTW, when I set it up, it asks if you want to activate a function to update printer, I selected NO.

              • @huntabargain: Great to hear! Yep generally it's an arms race where brother updates their firmware to stop after market ink, and the third party sellers then find a way to make the chips work on the updated version. So you could ask the seller what's the latest version of software their ink + chip will work on and update to that. Otherwise as long as you don't need the latest features and nothings buggy, just keep the firmware you've got!

              • @huntabargain: Update: I got ink from sevenhillsink for my brother l2710dw and its working fine so far
                https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/273820955488?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

I'm actually only 1-2 versions behind the latest firmware so I wasn't sure if it'd work but it's all good

    • +3

How important is WiFi? I just plug it into a router if I need to print from anywhere in the house.

      • Yeah my printer has wifi & Ethernet and I prefer the cable option for better reliability.

      • I've got FTTP and the router is in the wardrobe over the otherside of the room. Plus the router is reliable and the connection is stable so ethernet is a bit redundant these days, especially for a printer.

    • +1

Why do you even need dice for a printer? Sounds very greedy.

      Surely one die would do…

      • which day would that be?

    • Can get this printer with WiFi if you like (Kyocera P5021cdw), but I bought this one last week.
It is not something I'll ever move around so I'm happy to pay less and have it connected by ethernet.

      • You can only do that if the printer close to the modem thou!

  • Is there any difference between these two? The model number is the same but the SKU number is different.

    https://www.devicedeal.com.au/kyocera-ecosys-p5021cdn-a4-col…

    https://www.devicedeal.com.au/kyocera-ecosys-p5021cdn-a4-21p…

    • They look the same specs and some retailers quote / mention the 2 models on the same printer!
The Kyocera 1102RF3AS0 ECOSYS P5021cdn Colour Laser Printer is $174 delivered on Ebay

  • +1

If looking for Colour MFC laser printer with WIFI, any thought between Kyocera ECOSYS MA2100cwfx Colour Multifunction Laser Printer and Brother Wireless Colour MFC Laser Printer MFC-L3745CDW?
I read on one review that Brother have software update that blocked the aftermarket toners from operating? Not sure if that applies to the Kyocera as well. Any other feed back are appreciated on which one is a better printer.

    • +1

      My sister(!) has that Brother.
Recently bought https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/383563424711 and they work fine.
Luckily she has a brother who turned off auto-updates when I set it up last year just in case this kind of thing happened, but I haven't heard about it.

      • Thanks, the brother compatible toners are priced cheap too. I think I am leaning towards this printer. BTW, where do you turn off the auto updates, when you install the printer driver on the laptop?

        • No it's on the printer itself, can't remember exactly where.

          • @McFly: cheers, I will figure it out when I buy / get the printer and install it.

      • sounds a bit better than your brother had your sister!!
