  • I'd still rather get the bigger ones for 3 times more TBH - Mind you, these are probably pretty good for the price also…

    • ya gon need a sub

      FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 70 HZ-20 kHz +/-9db

but $30 for a powered speaker really says it all even though i think 4" drivers are shit

    • +3

These are the best bang-for-buck TV speakers.

They're light enough to go on those ikea "floating" shelves too; so you can make quite a nice entertainment area with them.

      • +1

i use all the reject logitech 2.0/2.1 sets i got hanging around from past jobs etc.

the SQ is fine for tv

but yeah i mean this would be a $99 soundbar

        • +1

Logi 2.0's are acceptable; but the 2.1's I find so unbalanced for TV, because of the "forward" sound mixing they use on ads.

          Just ends up SUPER boomy.

      • cute

  • Are these the best at this price point? Is it worth spending a bit more for a better speaker, need one for my parents to use for video calling/ watching content on a pc.

    • Doubt your parents would notice the difference for those uses

    • Yup.

Easily a step up from "computer speakers" below this price.

These are aimed at people replacing older 90's "hi fi" systems from Tandy or DSE.

      • These speakers are 7 years old though, surely there would be newer and better speakers at this price point?

        • +4

What makes you feel sure of that?

Copper windings, and class D amplifiers have been pretty refined for a long time now…

          • +1

@MasterScythe: Going off advancements in the pc components, display, phone and laptop space, I would have thought with how far we have come in all of those in 7 years, it would be the same in the audio space. I guess I was wrong, at least I am learning something

            • +2

@nk7: More like tech regressions. Look how backwards phone have gone recently - no headphone jack or removable batteries, etc.

            • +1

@nk7: There are advances but not at this price point.

              • @ZuluOz: Such as?

                • +1

@abuch47: The biggest advance in recent times would have to be room correction, eg Dirac.

The ability to measure room acoustics and actively EQ to compensate (both for the room and any speaker deficiencies) is a game changer, also used heavily in noise canceling headphones.

Mostly modern passives are moving backwards from their counterparts (same cost) decades ago. There is a momement toward slim and pretty boxes which is usually not as good as a larger enclosure with larger drivers. Not to say there have not been improvements, just talking in general and in the consumer space (eg not hyper hi end).

            • +2

@nk7: PC components cannot be compared because as people want their computers to do more complex stuff, it needs to get better.

However over the past 50 or so years people have tried just about every kind of material possible in the construction of speakers, and sending an electric current through a driver doesn't get any more complex.

Just like how musical instruments don't really "progress" now

    • I got the 1380 for $70 and they are awesome. Currently the tv set but will likely get bigger edifiers for that and he these with the pc

    This or the KEF LSX?

  • do these need an amp? they don't do they? they're externally powered?

    • -1

110 to 240v required, helps if you go look at the product,

it's even mentioned in the blurb above

      "Universal 110V-240V power supply"

which is built in, not an external power pack

      • +1

thanks, mate, for some reason I thought if it was denoted as "bookshelf" it required an amp. (If you can't tell, I don't know much about audio)

        Thanks for the reply :)

    • Forgot to add

"Active" denotes it has it's own amp

  • Only getting 1 left for $91, looks like I'm too slow.

    • It was a cashback scheme, had to pay the 91 and claim money back

      • where was that noted? sad

        • +1

Look at the image above … look below, second link says "Cashback"

  • Back in stock. @LR169
