Is this batter operated, if so how long does it last?

    • Yes battery operated. Depends on number of movement activities. But if you’re going down this path it’s recommended to also get the solar panel.

    • Wouldn't recommend as they are still 1080p, u can get way better valued camera at that price. also ring camera is requiring annual subscription! Nah….

      • Tell us a better option because I'm not sure one exists at this price point + subscription

        • The Eufy camera's are IMHO as good if not better than the Ring for roughly the same price and don't require a $50/yr subscription.

          • @playaz91: I hear the eufy cameras have really bad motion detection, though, making them pretty useless?

            • @wombat81: I’ve made the transition to eufy cameras after using ring spotlight battery cameras, I find these slightly quicker at motion detection

            • @wombat81: I can't comment on how good Ring is with motion detection but with the Eufy camera's it's not too bad, it's never going to be perfect but I would say more than good enough.

  • Wired would be better

    • How so? Wired requires drilling holes into walls for wires to go inside the house to be connected up

      • Ceebs climbing up a ladder and replacing the battery all the time lol

        • Yep, I have two of these.
Even at low sensitivity, batteries need to be recharged once a month on average.

          • @Tandy001: It's like people don't maintain the outside of their houses for some reason… mmmm

          • @Tandy001: Interesting it's advertised to have 6 to 12 months battery life each charge

            • @michael9865: It’s a case of it depends
Less activity = less battery usage
They could potentially last 12 months if there was minimal usage

              • @Heybargain: True but I did expect it to last 6 months being used daily as I thought min was 6 months lol, but the guy above said he needs to change it every month which I don't like the sound of

                • @michael9865: I used these previously and wouldn’t say they last 6 months. Maybe 2-3 but def not 6 months.

Also where is it advertised 6-12 months?

                • @michael9865: FYI I have two of these cameras, one with a solar panel, one without. When the camera without the panel has low battery I just swap the batteries since the other battery is always charged.

Note that they have two battery trays so you can double the battery life by buying a second battery.

                • @michael9865: To provide more details, I live in a corner block so there's high traffic from all directions (for a street) even when on low sensitivity. There is a second slot for an additional ring battery to extend the battery life but I only use one.

I don't consider this a bargain but when I purchased mine, it was on sale at Bunnings for around $90 so at this price, I think it is good value and I can justify a battery change once a month.

                  Hope this helps.

            • @michael9865: I don't think this is advertised. I tend to get about 2 months out of mine depending on how often they activate.

              • @wombat81: interesting and is that with one battery or two. Wonder how much longer it lasts with solar connected

                • +1

@michael9865: That's one battery. My camera with a panel stays charged indefinitely.

  • All the codes shared so far are the same?

    • Looks like they are

      • Standard for JB HiFi "exclusive coupons" sent via e-mail. It's the same code for everyone.

  • Is it possible to wire this thing? Spotlight usually has to install a bit high up so would be inconvenience to replace the battery

    • Yes you can get a wired adapter from memory.

  • I don't like the idea of paying a monthly fee just to get it to record video.
It's against the OZB spirit. lol

  • +1

Take note, Ring products need an annual subscription, I have a Ring door bell that I pay an annual subscription to have access to any video clip recorded. It's $49.95/device. You could still use it without subscription but no access to recorded clips & it doesn't have the SD Card option.

  • Annual subscription.. no thanks

  • Ring Spotlight

    Hehehe

  • Keep seeing people unhappy with paid subscriptions. Please let us know of a better alternative.

    • I believe Eufy has higher resolution and no monthly fees. Reolink if you want wider security system too. Not used them personally but worth looking into.

      • no fees as local storage, but jesus its motion detection is woeful.

and roughly 7-12sec delay from doorbell press to video. so thats 101% of couriers goneski.

    • I been using it for years, its worth the subscription. Else you need NAS/Remote backup etc.

  • Thought about it for a moment - but saw the first few reviews weren't very favourable.

Also one of them mentions the unit isn't waterproof? What happens when it gets rained on - does anyone own this & have real life feedback?

    • +1

I used this before moving onto the eufy products
Definitely waterproof had them outside and no issues at all

      • thanks for that feedback!

    • +1

I have 2 outside under the eaves with no problems. Solar panel handles torrential rain no problem.

  • I considered this but the reviews aren't good. Eufy looks to be better and cheaper + no subscription (wtf?).

    • +1

I can't see how Eufy is "better" and I think the cheaper thing is debatable too. While they have on board SD cards, unless you have the HomeBase (which seems to cost extra) you'll have no backup of the recordings (unless you physically copy stuff onto a HDD or something periodically which I suspect few people would actually do) and a bad guys could just steal and/or break your camera and they're sweet. Even with the HomeBase it seems to only keep recordings for a certain period of time? I guess depending on what your needs and wants are, either system could be described as better.

While I wouldn't pay full price for a Ring camera, say you were buying two cameras at this price, it's significantly cheaper than 2 of the equivalent Eufy cameras + Homebase. You could pay for a number of years of cloud subscription for the same price and you have piece of mind that your cloud recordings are always there if you need them down the track.

Again, I think it depends what you want out of your security system. But I think there's an argument that a subscription service is better at a price point that is, at the very least, similar to the non-subscription service.

It's also worth keeping in mind that you don't have to have a subscription for the Ring cameras to be useful. You still get motion notifications without a subscription and you can still get a live view at any time and use the speaker/microphone. So if you're using the camera to monitor pets or something, that might suffice.

I'm sounding like a Ring fanboi but I'm really not. Just trying to point out that non-subscription is not necessarily better, nor necessarily cheaper.

      • As long as you're getting more than 1 camera (let's face it you probably are) Eufy ends up cheaper. Lets look at a 2 camera kit from Eufy - $349 including the home base (Bunnings: https://www.bunnings.com.au/eufy-security-2c-2-camera-pack-p…), this doesn't seem to be on sale and looks like a standard price.

        Eufy - ($174.50 per camera x 2) = $349. Total = $349.00
        Ring - ($173.00 per camera x 2) = $346 + $150/year ("Plus" subscription as more than 1 camera) = $496 + $150/yr on going.

Not sure why you're arguing a subscription as a positive, or why you think an ongoing cost this would somehow end up cheaper?

        • +1

You don't need the $150/year subscription with 2 cameras. The 2x $50/year is cheaper. So it would be a total of $446 for 1 year.

I was also looking at RRP for the Eufy cameras which is $449. I wasn't aware that bunnings had it cheaper.

So the Ring cameras were cheaper initially when I looked. But then became more in subsequent years. But my point was that the functionality that you get for the (relatively small) extra cost potentially makes the Ring cameras a better choice.

Perhaps I didn't articulate it well, but I think the features that the Ring cameras + subscription offer are worth the extra cost, depending on your security camera use case. It's not necessarily the sort of thing that you want to go with the cheapest possible option just because.

For the average user, perhaps a combination of Ring and Eufy is the way to go. A Ring camera + subscription or 2 in the most prominent locations and then Eufy cameras in less prominent location to minimise ongoing costs.

For the record, the Ring solar panel is also $30 cheaper than the Eufy panel.

          • @wombat81: Judging by the Ring website it didn't seem possible to sign up to 2x $50 plans? Hence I went for the $150 in my example. Either way the Eufy still ends up cheaper by $97 up front and then $100 every year you own the Ring cameras.

The subscription brings the Ring to basically match the out of the box functionality of the Eufy, definitely doesn't seem like it's a worthwhile addition.

            • @playaz91: Again, it all depends on your use case. If a theif breaks in and steals/destroys your eufy cameras and your Homebase, you should have paid a bit extra, yeah?

              • @wombat81: Yes in that very specific and frankly laughable scenario the cloud storage on the Ring cameras is a better option.

                • +2

@playaz91: Another funny scenario is the HomeBase failing due to a fault or being damaged in a natural disaster eg flood/cyclone/bushfire, or a house fire. Luckily none of those things ever happen.

                  • @wombat81: Just like the cloud servers going down, luckily that never happens either right?

Look the simple fact of the matter is the Eufy is cheaper and offers the same sort of functionality for less that was my original point. The only added benefit the Ring provides (through an ongoing subscription) is cloud storage. If you think that’s a worthwhile investment at $50 or $150/yr for the life of the camera just in case someone breaks in and steals your cameras or a significant event happens where for some reason your number 1 priority is to save your footage then go right ahead and buy the Ring.

                  • +2

@wombat81: This what happen to my parents house, arson attack caused a house fire, had hickvision setup, it was caught in the fire. Hence remote backup always must.
