Early start on that morning I'd suggest so you don't miss out.

You should add the price in the title.

  • how much?

  • Details?

  • +2

I was looking at the catalogue yesterday. It appears to be dual 1GHz processor which I think would be Tegra 2. Screen is 9.7" 4x3 which would be 1024x768 I think. Good price for a Tegra2 tablet if it is the case, although a bit dated.

    • Personally, I'd be betting a TI OMAP SoC, as these are starting to appear in Chinatabs. Possibly the 4430, which would mean a PowerVR SGX540 GPU.

It might also be a Rockchip product, although I'm less up to speed with their stuff.

      • Cool… but really didn't make much sense… Would you buy it if you have 250 bucks spare?

        • Sorry, was just a bit of info for the tech-heads.

As for buying this myself, 9.7 inches is a bit larger than I'd like. What I really want is something with a bigger screen than my phone (3.2"), but more manouverable than my netbook (10.1" screen plus a keyboard and have to use a touchpad), for web surfing on public transport in particular, and always-on Internet in general. Also, I recently ordered another Android tablet.

        • I've got a galaxy note, I think it fits the bill.

I'm looking for a tablet to leave lying around in the lounge.. not sure whether to go with this one or not…

        • make sense now. thanks. yeah i need a smaller one too.

    • +5

EDIT — from this comment looks like it's not Tegra 2 but AMLogic based Cortex A9 chip, which is commonly found on cheap tablets on Chinese retail websites.

Hmmm maybe it's no longer a good deal.

  • +2

Will Reserve judgement until I see the Battery Specs

  • looks alright…..to bad i dont have an aldi near me

  • why dont they put in 3G?
    I really want 3G connection :(

    • +12

Because most people can work out how to use the 3G on their phone via WiFi hotspot….

      • +6

i know how to use 3G tethering (and have previously done that with my tablet), but i now use a 3G service on my tablet. so much more convenient, and doesn't waste battery life (on BOTH devices).

ps. my android tablet does not support (ad-hoc) tethering out of the box, therefore requiring me to hack my tablet to treat ad-hoc wi-fi networks as an infrastructure wi-fi network (not a simple task for the non technically minded consumer)…i suspect this is similar.

so no, tethering might not be a simple option for all users.

        • +1

I can strongly recommend a pocket wifi device. Easy to set up (just turn it on, really), and longer battery life all around (well, it has its own battery, so it saves your device's battery).

        • +2

Not sure about iPhone, but on Android Wi-Fi tethering actually turns itself into a hotspot AP so it is infrastructure mode. No tweak on the tablet required.

        • yeah, if your tablet is not 3G then get one of those pocket wi-fi devices (or "mi-fi's"). also handy if you have both a tablet and a laptop.

but personally, i'd rather not have to carry around an extra device! (also i was replying to the comment above, about using wifi tethering)

        • scotty: yes, but nokia and iphone (to my knownledge) don't. therefore tethering with a nokia or iphone is not as simple as pmupsinep implied.

also note, i said "might not be a simple option for all users."

        • You can tether from an iPhone, straight from the box.

        • by bluetooth, yes.

but from my understanding, not from iphone to android tablet over wi-fi (you need to jailbreak or use Mifi in order to enable infrastrucutre wi-fi).

          or am i mistaken?

in any case, you definitely can't with nokia!

at the end of the day, inusure's question was completely legitimate, and i have already demonstrated why pmupsinep's condescending response was not accurate for ALL users (at the very least, Nokia phone users).

        • Nope, you can tether via bluetooth, wifi and also via USB on an iPhone.

I had a Nokia e63 and I could tether via bluetooth.

        • wifi tether from an iphone to an android device (NOT an ipad or laptop), without installing any app? i'm not sure about that, but if you say so, fair enough.

and in regard to nokia, we are talking about WIFI tether, not bluetooth.

        • Yup, you can wifi tether without installing any apps. It's been like that since ios 4.

        • Nokia does, I just install a free app and it is done - one hotspot.

        • Yes, there is an app for nokia (joikuspot), but it creates an ad hoc network. Android tablets (unhacked), can't connect to ad hoc networks.

Please read the whole comment thread before responding.

        • I don't think the iPhone supports tethering. I tether my Samsung 10.1 tablet to my Motorola Atrix 4G while I'm in the office, and it works perfectly.

Be aware, though - tethering does drain the phone's battery, and it makes the Atrix quite warm.

        • -3

"I don't think the iPhone supports tethering"
Maybe you shouldn't think about things you have no idea about?

        • -3

Vote me down all you want but I'm sick of Android users who think their bloody tech geniuses when really 9/10 their just as clueless as most users.

        • gave you a positive offset vote.

but look, everyone, this is really going off topic…whether the iphone can tether or not is really irrelevant. at the end of the day, some people (for whatever reason) want to use 3G. end of story.

          let's leave it alone!

      • +3

Agreed. Most people already have a data plan on their phone they don’t use. If you have Wi-Fi at home and tethering when you need it then Wi-Fi only works great and saves a lot of money in device and data plans. I think 60% of tablet users fit this type.

However when looking for a cheap tablet for my 76 year old Nana that has no Mobile or Computer but really wants to see the New Zealand newspaper everyday then 3G is required.

  • For the same price probably the Acer A200 is a better choice as the later has GPS I believe.

    • Where can the Acer A200 be had for the same price??

      • An old post showing Acer A200 can be had for $249. Now probably back to $299 with cash back and possibly 8GB RAM. I would sacrifice losing 8gb for a GPS
as I can always add an sd card.

Didn't even notice this one doesnt have GPS. Took it almost granted that all devices should have GPS now-a-days.

kogan's agora is faster and cheaper

    • How so? Don't even know what sort of graphics solution it uses. Can't judge a performance of a tablet by looking only at the clock speed of the CPU.

    • +3

But it's Kogan. Aldi is hardly top of the line, but compared to Kogan it's a gem.

    • +2

What? Kogan Agora 10" is 1.2GHz single core Cortex A8. It's the same clock speed as MSI Windpad Enjoy 10, which the owners would know how slow those are (I owned one, doh). I don't think it would be a match to a dual core Tegra 2, which is a Cortex A9 implementation.

    • You guys are right the kogan is single core only; i got deceived by the clock speed.

  • -1

    RAM size?

  • Is that an IPS screen?

    • -8

no, its a super amoled+ RGB with 1920x1080 resolution.

      ….or maybe it's an ips.

  • Anyone have any comments on whether or not this is a better buy that a ramos pro 17 for approx $150 ?

Screen size / resolution appears to be the main difference.

    • +4

7" and 10" is a big difference. Generally out and about 7" seems to be the better choice, but for an in-house entertainment tablet, or for something that you want to use when you're on the couch or bed, get the 10".

  • does aldi offer a one month no questions asked refund for tablets, similar to there laptops?

maybe good for a months free use. ;)

    • Yes, I bought an ebook reader from them before , but it was shit out of box so returned it within 2 weeks ,, just check with them about a month.

Check the black "Button) on the lower left side of the banner on http://aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_22143.htm?WT.mc_id=20…

As far as I know all Aldi tech stuff has a 60 day no questions asked return policy.

They just assume that the return is ethical

      • -2

you cant return it damaged or scratched.. good luck

    • 0.3mp front, not rear

    • Pretty major discrepancies between the Tempo specs listed above and the Bauhn specs from their website. I would have been slightly interested if the specs were as per the Bauhn website but as it stands, the 'actual' (Tempo) specs are pretty lacklustre.

    • +1

Were they categorical about the 3G? When these tablets say they have a 3G "option", it usually means that they will support a moderate number of 3G USB dongles—mostly Huawei branded ones.

    • They've fixed it:
      CPU
      1GHz Amlogic Cortex A9
      GPS
      No
      etc.

  • Anyone know the weight ?

    • I love aldi products. but i hate the fact they are so damn scratchy on the specs of electronic products. But when you go in store, i bet it will have the full specs right on the outside of the box!! how hard is it to put the full specs online!!

Anywho, i would also like to know dimensions and battey mAh.

      • it doesn't mention how big the battery but based on this webpage below(go to specifications)
        http://www.bauhn.com.au/productDetail-AndroidTablet.html

        Battery life
        Li-Polymer, (Battery life estimate1080P Video 8Hrs up)

        Other info might useful:
        Display
        TFT 9.7" 16:9, LCD panel

        Resolution
        WXGA, 1024 x 768 resolution

        Internal memory
16 GB (expandable with micro SD memory card)

        Memory
        DDRII 1GB

    • No idea, but it's important when you consider tablets. They need to be light enough so you can hold the tablet in one hand, and even my Galaxy Tab 10.1 feels a little heavy after a short time.

  • +5

Be warned! Dealing with Tempo (the 'manufacturer' of these Tablets) has been a problem getting Support. (for a discussion of Aldi stock procurement methods & Aldi's use of various Trademarks they own to rebadge electronics see http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1816088&p…)

I and others sent emails end of last year, and emailed again & rang this year, but Tempo never responded to faults in a Bauhn PVR. Even in discussions with Tempo's Rep who shows up on Whirlpool to promote new products, he would not discuss Tempo Support problems.

For example, a problem in the PVR where the unit turns on when a Compact Fluro Light is turned on, Tempo Australia considers this is NOT a fault! http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1816088&p…

Users have expressed anger with faulty firmware supplied by Tempo. Tempo seems to rely on users to test their products, developing new models from the feedback. For 7 months Tempo denied freezing problems with the PVR when a program was FF/REW. After FF/REW, you often had to unplug the unit from the 240V to reset it!

Tempo products sometimes reach Aldi stores DOA - poor quality control, which Tempo Australia acknowledged when they tried to recruit me to help them. Users who like Aldi electronics are usually talking about Medion trademark products, released in Germany first, and generaly of good quality.

The only solution is to return Tempo's products to Aldi for a refund. Aldi refunds have been easy. Still you can buy from Aldi, try it, & return within 60days for simple change of mind refund.

    • +1, thanks for the info.

I'm staying away from this then.

      • Sounds like you made the right decision!!

  • +1

What does the back of it look like? Mustn't be too nice if all 5 pics are only of the front.

  • can we download microsoft word into that tablet or we have to find some other software

    • +3

MS Word is for Windows operating systems. For Android though, there is a about a dozen office applications out there that you can use.

E.g Polaris Office, Kingsoft Office, QuickOffice, Documents to Go and so on

  • does GPS = supported means it's optional and we have to buy an adapter for it?

    • Id say so. Just like those wifi supported blueray players where you just need the $99 wifi adapter :(

  • I'm thinking of getting this as an e-reader, app touchscreen tablet for my children's education, sometimes use at home for checking email and facebook and using Skype, to use out and about at wifi hotspots (like Maccas while I work out 'where are we' on google maps while having a cuppa) and in general be the handy pop in the bag device. Possibly save some movies on it??? Cor I'm showing ignorance here! Would it handle USB stick movie/file transfer from my laptop? Would this be worth getting for what I need? Thanks in advance.

  • How does this compare, to the MSI windpads that were on sale at Big W recently. Because i bought one for my sister and it is quite slow, is it alot faster or comparable speed. Also is the 16GB internal Memory Flash Memory, HDD or a SD card.

    • The MSI Windpads are slow and sucky. In some cases my Optus Mytab seems to overtake the Windpad.

Their firmware is badly optimised, the processor is slow and for the same price I would rather buy an Ainol Novo 7 Tornado or Mars series. Even better, the RAMOS W17 Pro is a good choice too.

Everytime someone says a Kogan product is "too good to be true", Chuck Norris roasts a kitten.

      Please think of the kittens.

This price is normal. Spemall sells a $179 tablet with near identical specs, but with an IPS screen.

      • But those kittens are so tasty. "The other white meat".

  • Aldi are running a TV ad featuring this Tablet.

  • @Parramatta Stock Sold Out

  • @ Melbourne city store SOLD OUT at 8:44 AM

  • Any one please give some feedback about this new tablet….cheers…

    • I'm on my mobile so I can't check easily. But from the whirlpool link below, Scotty's comment above is correct: it's one of the cheaper Chinese chips and not Tegra. Maybe not that great.

      • 1 Ghz Dual Core Processor

not dual core, no HDMI cable, or earphones - talk about cheap!
and freezing problems, poor display colour, poor sound (mic & speakers)
        (from whirlpool link below)

As the manufacture has reputation for poor quality control, I was interested but would not buy this tablet.

(Aldi's previous 3G 32GB Android 3.2 Medion Tablet was a reasonable quality dual core Tegra2 but a little expensive at $499.
NVIDIA® GeForce® graphics, Quad-band 3G module, GPS and good sound

  • Did anyone manage to get one? Review???

  • For a review of the Aldi sale… http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/426781/aldi_249_androi…

PC World had blown the dual core myth by 09:33
"The device is powered by a 1GHz single-core Amlogic Cortex A9 processor (despite incorrectly advertised as a dual-core chip on the manufacturer Web site)"

  • So…did anyone get hold of one? They sold out quickly :(

    • check the link mention by brucefromaustralia above

    • +1

And everyone got burned buying a single core tablet, thinking it was a dual core.

The tablet uses a single core CPU but the manufacturer decided to pass it off as dual core because they're factoring in the GPU. Very dodgy practice.

There seems to be a lot of talk about the new $230~250 Cube U30GT., looks like a much nicer alternative to this tab!

  • PC world wrote again about the 'error' in Aldi's ads… http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/426929/aldi_249_androi…

  • Presumably anyone who bought one of these would be entitled to return it based simply on the false advertising, and regardless of Aldi's seemingly generous returns policy.

I would expect buyers to at least be demanding a partial refund because of the difference between single and dual cores - anyone going back to complain?
