92JB5OFFJUL

It looks like the price for Surface Pro 8 is dropped by 20 % in JB HiFi, HN, and TGG…

However, jb hi-fi's extra 5% off (Online only) makes it sweeter.

If anyone has the Amex $100 off of $500 more, it makes it even better… Unfortunately, I was not targeted for it
Apologies, the Amex deal is only for the Microsoft site. There was another $20 off of $100 exclusive to JB Hifi. so YMMV on the Amex offer.

  • Windows 11 is so macOS like. Does this mean that it is also optimised for Microsoft hardware and 8G RAM is enough?

    • I think you'll find x86 architechure is the issue.

I think it's Tim Apple with his sorcery that rest of PC market doesn't understand

    • +1

Depends on the use… For everyday use or for students' using these for note taking, 8GB would be sufficient I guess… However, if someone wants to run Photoshop and multi-task a bit with many apps in the BG…Perhaps 16GB is the best bet.

P.S I used Win 11 on an older i7 - 16GB laptop and found it fluid.

I went with the 16GB model anyway. But right after I bought someone is willing to sell their Surface Pro 7 - i7 16GB with keyboard and pen for $800 to me.

My primary use case is only for digital note-taking and some multi-tasking on the go. That offer has left me scratching my head now.

      • But right after I bought someone is willing to sell their Surface Pro 7 - i7 16GB with keyboard and pen for $800 to me.

Surface Pros usually retain value better than the average typical Wintel machine… so $800 sounds awfully cheap but always dependent on age/condition/etc.

Does this mean that it is also optimised for Microsoft hardware and 8G RAM is enough?

It's not enough on macOS either - I have an M1 Mac with 8GB and another with 16GB RAM and it's absolutely noticeable how the one with 8GB will slow down when multitasking, e.g. having a large number of tabs open, or doing stuff in the background.

I think my M1 Macs are awesome, but don't fall for the snake oil - there's no magic sauce that can make it suddenly use less RAM than on Windows.

    • +2

8GB of RAM is not enough for an M1 Mac, it's not even enough for an M1 iPad Pro. 16GB is needed for both Mac and PC.

    • Arm vs x86. Windows will never be as light as the M1s

      • I assume you mean macOS instead of M1. Both Windows and macOS need 16GB of RAM to prevent paging to disk during normal use.

See that's where your wrong. "Microsoft hardware" doesn't exist. Every windows device uses either AMD or Intel.

The difference here is that Apple is able to use Apple hardware with their software. This is how they're able to achieve this level of optimisation.

Windows 11 may look very much like MacOS, following the modern design patterns of blurred and translucent windows. On the inside, it is still just Windows. Digger deeper into the OS, Windows 11 feels more like a useless skin on top of Windows 10. I till this day can't find a reason why this upgrade to Windows 11 was necessary. It's just been a buggy experience for me, slowing down my devices instead of giving me any advantage.

Go for 16GB to make it future-proof, 8GB is not enough IMHO. I have 8GB and while having multiple tabs open in a browser with a couple of few other apps and 8GB is getting utilized to the max.

Note: Does not include Type cover.

where are the "omg hOW CaN MaC HaVe 8Gb RAm In 2022" bros now?

    • Nothing has changed, M1 or not, macOS needs 16GB of RAM to prevent regular disk paging just like Windows. Most people should not buy an 8GB Windows or Mac device imo.

      I didn't downvote you btw.

  • Are these any good as primary school laptop replacement? Need the type cover too at least?

    • +3

I say no and only if planning on type cover. They aren't exactly hard wearing especially for primary school kids.

      • Ok, thanks for the input!

This or Mac air M2 8GB

    • I have the 8GB version of this, and love the form factor. But MacBook Air M2 for sure.

  • Students can get a further 10% off TGG's price by registering for a code here: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/microsoft-surface-student-off…

Code takes a while to come.

    • You sure this will work? It says " This discount will not be valid in conjunction with any other offer."? (link you sent)

Contemplating on hassling my student friend for a code but don't want him to go through the hassle if not usable with current 20% off.

      • Sorry not 100% sure. TGG price doesn't require a code though so it could. The link I posted also includes the model below the section where you add details.

Bought 2 x i7s last weekend at full price HN. Got sucked into the low supply argument to pull the trigger. Literally feeling sick to see this deal today.

  • Does Pro 8 still have the heating/fan running issues?
I still have the OG Pro and it works great but work issued Pro 3 (i7) and Pro 5s (i5) in past have had heating issues while fan runs constantly especially summers when WFH. My MB Air M1 hasn't had any issues without the fans. Thanks.

    • +1

If you're worried about fan noise on the Surface Pros, get the Pro 7/7+ (or 7 Plus) in the i3 or i5 configuration - it is fanless.

The internals of the Pro 8 i5 model is pretty much identical to the Pro 7+ i5s - except the Pro 8 added the fan back in for some reason.

      • Thanks. Not in the market right now but will keep an eye out when I am in the market in the future.

  • Personally find surface laptop go is more affordable for student but able to do the same job

  • Not a fan of these tablet laptops
