    10.5-inch* 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) TFT
    OS Android 11

    Memory 4GB
    Has GPS.

    • Is 4gb enough for Android

      • +5

Used to be. 6gb should be the minimum now.

      • +11

Its all you'll get for this price.

      • +5

Depends on what you're using it for. 4GB is good enough for a $200 tablet.

I have an S7 Edge at home which I use occasionally. It has 4GB of RAM, yet it's still quite quick.

If you're using the tablet for multimedia, even 2GB would be good enough.

        • I have the A7 with 3GB RAM, its sluggish with response times while opening apps and sometimes with navigating android but most apps run fine once they're opened. I have the 32GB Flash model and that is my bigger issue, I don't need much Flash but android system files and "unspecified" (which I think is also non-removeable system stuff) now takes up more than half of that space. This A8 model with 4GB RAM and 64GB Flash, I think it should be fine in most use cases. Note these tablets have the volume button right next to the power button so you will accidently turn of the screen while attempting to change the volume sometimes unless you're particularly careful to feel out the buttons first, a bloody frustrating minor flaw and I'm pretty sure A8 has the same issue.

Ideally you want 6GB+ RAM but most $200-$250 tablets that do come with 6GB RAM typically have other arguably bigger issues (weaker processor, worse speakers, worse streaming support).

        • +3

          Yeah that's where I'm at.

Actually just wanting to replace my old, dying thing from ~2016 that barely wakes up from sleep mode half the time. That only had 3gb and was good enough for what I would use these for. It cost more than this too, so I'm happy.

(And I feel a little self conscious at a lot of the other comments here saying this is going straight to their kids as a toy😅)

  • microSD support?

    • -5

Yep oh wait wifi model not sure.

    • +2

      It does.

  • Thanks!

Kicking myself for missing out on that Optus deal months back, was hoping this would be part of Prime day but apparently not.

    • +9

      Apparently, Optus kicked themselves too

      • XD

        Really, why?

        • Because they gave tablets out for free. Only $12.50 for 12 months! Total $150 for 4g version and free internet. Plus you would get 6 months free prime. Basically whoever bought this tablet through the optus deal made money.

          • +1

@fozzie: and people have been flogging them on ebay - 4g have been going for ~$350

  • +10

warning - from my experience with the Optus deal the wifi antenna are terrible

  • +1

this seems like a great deal for a basic tablet! I opted for the s8 through the edu store during the EOFY sales and that cost $857

  • +1

    Awesome, 10yo birthday present sorted!

Anyone know how good their delivery is?

  • +2

OMG, I paid more than that a week ago for a used one. 🤦‍♂️ Great price for this tablet. Biggest issue for me when I got it was the screen. No where near as nice as IPS but you get used to it. Speed wise it's much faster than my Tab A6 which is what I was after.

  • Any sales on the new Ultra?

  • I'm looking for a good kids case to go with it if anyone has a suggestion

  • +14

I have one of these from the optus deal. The display is nothing short of atrocious in terms of colour reproduction, and has horrible ghosting issues. The SoC is incredibly slow and it hangs all the time.

I wouldn't pay more than $100 for something like this. There's a reason why optus handed these out for nothing and why it's selling for so cheap, it's a terrible device.

    • +3

I wouldn't purchase it for myself but it's fine for young kids.

    • +2

Agree on all counts! The only redeeming factor was that it came almost for free (after taking into account cashback and Amazon Prime). The thing is hardly worth $100.

    • Yeah you get what you pay for with these

  • Amazing! Bough one!

  • Would this be an upgrade from tab s2?

  • Almost read this one as galaxy S7 tab FE…. Thought I paid something overpriced dropped from $559 to under $200 few days ago….

  • +7

Used the discount code SORETO10 and got $10 off.

    • Thanks tatasauce. Code worked and saved doing officeworks price match. Also extra 2.8 % cashrewards. Thanks also to Op. Cheers.

      • Did your CR track? I know someone that bought without the code and it tracked. The purchase I made with code hasn't tracked yet.

  • -2

    Probably price error

    • Given the cancellations, this shouldn't have been downvoted.

  • +2

Be aware, the screen and smoothness of these are absolute garbage.
I got the 64gb 4g(5g?) one in the optus deal a while back for around $150
That's about all i'd pay for it.

The fit / finish / build quality is nice.
But the main experience in using it is trash.

As someone who prefers android phones, you're better off with a cheaper ipad.
Perhaps there's decent android tablets out there? This isn't one.

Would recommend people to try these out before buying them, or at least set your expectations low otherwise.
Yes, i'm aware that it's a cheap tablet for this price. The RRP is ridiculous for what you get.
So don't go into this thinking you're getting a quality tablet at a steal of a price. You'd be getting a cheap tablet experience at a reasonable price.

    • -7

Yeah Samsung tablets are crap. I went with their S6 lite over the iPad cause of USB C and compared to the iPad that's a similar price, it's absolute garbage.

    • +11

Seems overly harsh for a under $200 tablet with decent software support (should get 3 version updates I think).

I also got the Optus deal and set it up for my daughter and I'd be happy paying $200 for it. It's definitely a huge upgrade from the old tab A7 she was using that was about 5 years old.

      • Its screen is way worse that even iPad1. Never saw anything that awful.

      • I think your view is certainly reasonable.
I probably had too high expectations seeing the RRP of ~500 or so for the 4g version
        I think it's fair for $150-200
It's probably perfect for a secondary tablet, or something that a child can use and no significant harm if it gets cracked etc

For a $500 tablet, its garbage.
        For a $150-200 tablet, it's fine.
I still worry that some people will see Samsung + significant discount from RRP and expect something good.

    • +1

Get out of here the ghost of steve jobs! We all know it's you.

  • How does this compare to A7 10.4? I have the A7 and I think it is OK. I would presume the A8 is a bit better though.

    • The original A7 10.4 is great ittle tablet! Doesn't sound like the A8 counts as an upgrade.

  • This vs the lenovo p11 that’s regularly on sale?

    • this! for CPU is faster alone!

      • +5

The Unisoc in this is marginally faster in benchmarks than the SD662 in the P11 however the Lenovo has a superior IPS screen (compared to TFT on this Samsung).

The P11 also has the option of 6/128GB for around $40-50 more, while this A8 is 4/64GB.

Samsung does have much better updates and overall software experience though.

Pros and cons for both I guess. Would love to hear from someone with hands on experience with both.

        • Haven't compare TFT and IPS side by side. How bad is TFT?

          • -2

@spiinl: I had it. It's so bad, I would stay away even at this price.

            • @aveeno bb: I have the tab a 10.5 2018. Thinking of upgrading to this. It has an IPS.

  • +5

Cheers! I ordered one a few months ago for my wife and she loves it, ordered one today for myself!

  • +2

Just bought this last night at jb's for $299 thankfully I haven't opened it yet taking it back first thing tomorrow morning, save myself 100 bucks!!

  • Would make a great device for homeassistant dashboard

  • +2

I got mine in the optus deal, I use it primarily for reading manga and watching shows.

    Pros:
Pretty cheap deal especially with the data.
    Battery life is good.
The speeds I have been getting on optus up here in Karratha have been great (upwards of 170 Mbps, telstra usually sits at about 15Mbps at the same time)

    Cons:
Slow charging even with "fast charge" 0-100% takes a few hours.
Processor gets hung up pretty often especially when just waking it and having to switch apps.
Screen is really bright even at minimum brightness, hurts my eyes to read manga at night and in general the screen has alot of bright blacks which really sucks.

I think the optus deal makes it worth it as you get 80gb's of data and the A8 for $140ish bucks but without the data and tablet at that price I certainly couldn't see myself buying one. Probably better to find a cheap S series tab.

    • -1

I also had the deal from Optus but sold it since.

Even at this price, I would stay away.

May be okay for kids, but the screen is so bad.

  • +1

This looks like a good option for a console for Home Assistant setup. Tempted to pull the trigger.

    • A rather expensive console just for HA.

      • What's a good alternative? I bought an a7 lite for this purpose a while back but kids took carriage of it and then cracked the screen. Always on the look for something that can be used as a dashboard with home assistant and fully kiosk browser

        • Yeah was thinking about this after I wrote my comment. Any cheap or old Tablet should do but then……which old Tablets etc is the question. Is it only for HA. Where is it being placed and so on.

The screen on this device isn't the best. Even my daily go to ancient 2014 Galaxy Tab 10.5 S is much better resolution @ 2560 x 1600 and Super AMOLED.. What about an old Surface Pro3 OR the likes……as other option. Hard to know.

          • @Borg: Any standard display with HD resolution should do the job. But again it depends on how much information / metrics you want to cram in one screen. Lower resolution have limitations on how much is desplayed at once on screen.

As far as placement is concered, the best i believe is a tilt stand with wireless charger. That way its an easy pick for kids for day to day use and when on stand, its an HA console.

    • I did it exactly for this reason, to replace an old tablet

  • I'm looking for a tablet with a pen to use in meetings - draw something on the whiteboard/notes apps. This TabA seems doesn't have pen support.
    Any recommendation? Thanks

  • Thanks OP, I went to officeworks to look at one.

Being TFT screen the viewing angles were not a great as other tablets with IPS screens such as the iPad that i also looked at in store but I am buying this for kids so will be fine…and cheap.

Order placed with SORETO10 dicount code and cashrewards (although I think promo code my cancel my cashback).

    • Why didn't u just price match + 5% at officeworks

  • Thanks OP, Got JB Phone sales to price match and then used the 5% coupon to reduce further. Paid using discounted gift cards.

  • +16

Why all the hate? I'm writing this comment from this exact tablet right now. It's good value at this price. Is it as snappy or sharp as my pixel 6? No. Was it a quarter the price? Hell yes.

I use it for reading, plex viewing, light web browsing. Totally fine for that.

Tip: activate the developer menu and disable transitions and animations. Instant extra snappy.

    • +4

Yeah I agree. The way people are carrying on about the screen you'd think it's completely unusable.

Don't go into a sub $200 tablet thinking you are going to get Galaxy S level amoled contrast levels are you'll be fine. Can't believe people are whinging about it even on the $7.50 a month for 12 months (with data) Optus deal! That was an absolute steal.

      • its $12.50 mate most haven't gotten their cashback

      • -2

I got one from that deal and made a small profit by selling the tablet after a month or so of usage.

As a tablet, I just couldn't use it for anything at all and bought a used iPad Pro 11 instead and using the sim from the Optus deal. Expensive yes, but so much better experience.

    • Watching Plex/Twitch and the odd web browsing in bed is exactly all I planned to do also, so seeing this comment is a relief after reading so much hate on the screen/image quality from the other responses here :/

      Cheers :)

      • +3

I don't know what @fidelio issues with the screen are, the screen is responsive and the full hd screen is more than adequate for its size. I got this tablet from the optus deal and it's great and the price was even better. I replaced a Tab A with it and the difference is night and day, I don't expect it to be used for gaming or anything highly demanding, if that's what I was after I would've got a Tab S8

        • -1

My experience is different. I'm comparing against a 4-5 year old ipad and a old ipad pro 11.
I find it janky and stuttery.

  • "Requested quantity is not available" ,, Just trying to purchase one

  • Looks like it's sold out 😭

  • +7

Anyone else’s order get cancelled too? Due to a “technical glitch” ?

    • I haven't yet but I hope not!

      • And it's cancelled! 😢

    • Yep, cancelled here

    • Yep same! Canx due to technical glitch

    • Same :/

    • same

    • Yep, Mine was too

    • Another cancel here :(

  • Another cancelled due to a technical glitch 🤦‍♂️

  • Now that the order's cancelled, what's the next best deal available for tablets around this price range? The Lenovo P11?

  • same to me ,just noticed the order has been refunded.
