        Yes you can I have over 30 domain names that didn't have any matching strings in the other .au names spaces.

        It's open now what will open up in September is contested domains, if the matching registrants haven't opted to pay for their priority registration.

  Who would register a .melbourne when .com.au or .au exist? Isn't the whole deal with URLs to get something short and snappy that's easy to remember and quick to type?

  God I remember when they were giving away .Melbourne and .Sydney for low cost for multiple years.
