Dammit, I have quite a few unactivated purple Coles Mastercards I was planning to use when this deal came around again.

    • I guess you may still try at checkout to see if they are reduced by 10%. If not just don’t buy them.

      • Will definitely be testing one out that weekend.

        • How did you go mate?

  • +2

Great. Just put a huge stash in freezer for next week

    • +2

That’s really cold. And kind of greedy. But mostly cold

    • Which freezer section is the best to hide?

      • Definitely not the hash browns. They are always out of stock.

  • A noob question, are these gift cards considered as debit cards when paying ?

    • Yes, it is considered a Debit Mastercard.

  • I was wondering if I need to pay tax to ATO in weekly instalment, how do I set it up ? Can I change the details every fortnight or monthly ?

  • +3

Time for me to open a Hiver account 😂

  • +2

Yes! It's back! And this time Coles isn't discriminating against people not located in the eastern states.

Over the years I've used at least 20 of these cards, and never had any compromised. I know there was a period of time where many people said they were scammed, but it seemed all good to me.

And yes, I'll be using Hiver to layer another 5% off on top.

I always get amused when I buy 5x $250 cards and a junior employee asks me if I'm buying them for 'someone else', and leaves a leaflet about scams on the checkout. They have to do that of course. It must look a bit weird when someone forks out over $1k on a self checkout.

    • -3

I agree that Westies should be skipped. They already get a surplus due to higher commodity prices. hehe!

    • +2

You'd better not buy more than 4 cards in 1 transaction. I think this should be pinned to the deal post.

Many staff is not authorised to check out more than $1k of gift card and you will have to wait for them to call manager over.

As in previous deal, some ppl brought 5 to the counter and staff ask them to buy 4 and end of mixed up with the cards and have gave them the one that has not been paid for. Or the one they kept for 2nd transaction is in fact already been paid for.

You will get activation error and all the hassle to get manager to refund it. In fact some didn't even know how to refund and mis-informed ppl that they didn't get charged for the failed transaction.

      • Always be in control of what you give the staff to scan.
      • Check the receipt to match the last 3 digit of the cards before you pay for the 2nd transaction or left the store.
      • That's unusual. I have bought 5x$250 cards at least 4 times via self checkout without problems. A manager had to be called over to authorize a purchase over $1k, but it only took maybe 20 seconds to find one.

        • Depends on what time of the day and what stores you buy it and how busy they are. It is just annoying to hold back the line to wait for manager to come at manned checkout.

Some Coles even don't want to allow ppl check out this at self-checkout during the promo last time.

          • @samehada: I couldn't participate in the last offer as I am in SA. Maybe the rules have changed. I'll keep an eye out.

            • @Cluster: Nothing to do with the rule, it is to do with the over-jealous manager and some staffs think that they are in a power trip and they just make up their own rule. Some of these jerks even tell ppl can only buy 1.

              https://youtu.be/nh-As5b_jZA

          • @samehada: This happened to me last time, only manager that had the authority to authorize was on a break and I was in the self service. I said that's ok I'll just do it in 2 transactions and the young girl refused and insisted that it needs to be in 1 transaction now. So she closed the self checkout by putting the ribbon across the entry, waited for all customers currently using self checkout finished their checkout and then went to get manager, meanwhile customers lining up at self checkout we're getting pretty impatient, then manager comes in and was pissed as I had interpreted her smoke break. Fair to say I won't be doing 5 in a single transaction again.

"As in previous deal, some ppl brought 5 to the counter and staff ask them to buy 4 and end of mixed up with the cards and have gave them the one that has not been paid for." That's me XD.
Always check the card number before you leave

        • -2

Not just check before you leave, you need to check before you pay for the 2nd transaction if staff ask you to split into 2 transactions.

Once you got activation error and you got an incompetent staff/manager it is a headache to deal with them.

Coles/WW should have properly train their staff especially promotion on the GC is becoming part of their attractive catalogue offer.

    • I’ve had the manager come and talk to me. I said no I’m the taker here.

  • +1

    need one for kid

    • +3

You are purchasing a kid with these?

      • +2

It may not be as untraceable as they think 😬

      • +1

What's Woolies return policy on those?

        • +1

          Cannot confirm or deny:
Same as all their other products. No "change of mind" refund, but can exchange once. If damaged/faulty*, can receive full refund upon proof of purchase.
*if you make it damaged/faulty due to exposing it to TikTok, then refund policy is void.

  • Since this is a Mastercard, can I buy these with my Hiver card (5% cashback) and use them to buy Apple gift cards in the upcoming Big W 20X Rewards points deal?

    • Correct.

      • I know you generally can’t buy gift cards with gift cards, but this isn’t technically a gift card right? Are there any restrictions placed on the coles prepaid Mastercard?

        • +1

None except that some online places do not accept them. I have had sites like eBay not let me use it to get eBay gift cards for example.

  • FYI if you had recently applied for one of those credit cards where you need to spend $3000 in x months sort of thing, buying lots of $250 prepaid MasterCards counts towards that target.

    • Hi, for example if I buy $3k worth of prepaid MasterCards would this complete credit card target spent?

      • Correct as that CC you used thinks you just spent a HUGE amount on shopping.

    • Yes, I have to hit $1500 for the virgin flyer velocity card in the next few days.

  • Wasn't there a huge issue with these cards where people were hacking/emptying them? Or am I thinking about another card?

    • +2

Same type but different provider now. Read above comments

Is it possible to buy a house with these gift cards?

    • +2

Might be just enough to cover agent fees?

      • No agent fees when buying a home

    • +1

That wouldn’t even pay off the stamp duty

    • Make sure your real estate agent can split payments

    • Pressing one button on the computer to activate it fees apply
  • I'm rocking-up at opening time Wednesday, for sure. Get them two-fiddys!

  • Anyone care to share how they use up the tiny bit of remaining credits in the Visa card ?

    Say I have 1
$2.72 left and how do I use these up when I buying something with a larger value

    • Amazon gift card or shop at ww

    • +3

“Split payment” at any Coles/Woolworths checkout

      • It’s a little annoying to keep tracking the balance . But I guess there is no other way around it

        • +3

I keep a google drive spreadsheet for all my gift card status and balance

          • +5

@RTY: Same but also have a black texta written on it with the new amount.

          • +1

@RTY: This is the way. I also use StoCard and put amount/expiration in description field so that appears on the cards.

    • Just keep them for sign ups that require $1 or so pre-authorization

    • Last year I put more than 20 of these into my council rate, all small values. They must hate me. It looks like I will do this again, council rate is coming up soon.

      • -1

How, I don't think any councils do split payments.

        • +1

You can usually make as many small payments as you like as long as you pay the lot before the due date on the bill. Split it in to 52 weeks if you want to,to budget to your weekly pay, or monthly if that's how often you're paid.

My council accepts payments no smaller than $2 each time. Whenever I've got a $100 card I have to make a payment of $99.60 as a 0.4 percent fee will be added to it.

        • Since COVID, my council (Stirling, WA) allows rate payment in small chunks as long as the due payment is by due dates (optional 1, 2 or 4 due dates). No fee is included.

        • +1

Have you reviewed the many councils across Australia? Big job!

City of Sydney allows payments as little as 1¢ at anytime.

This an example of what one of those dodgy card activation sites looks like compared to the genuine one - came across this a while back. Just putting it here for general info.

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/348195/96331/genuine.j…

    • bro, even the official ones look dodgy

      • bro, even the official ones look dodgy

My thoughts exactly. I really had to spend some time confirming that the site was the real deal before I used it.

  • Can these be used overseas? Would be good to carry a few of these around rather than my CC (which I can keep in the safe)

    • OS usage works.

    • This card has fx charge

    • +1

I thought the complete opposite, I wouldn't want to take them overseas because if my wallet got stolen, then im out $200.

  • so, we have to purchase the new package card but not the old purple ones? (I believe in my local stores, there are still full of old purple cards

  • +2

For those who are going to pay with Hiver card:

Our Visa Debit card has a transaction limit of $1,000 per card, per day for ATM and EFTPOS transactions. If you require an increase to your daily limit, up to $2000, you may request this by contacting us.

    • Thanks. I just joined HIVER and transferred $5k into the account. Still waiting for the digital 'credit card' bit to arrive though. I assume will be soon and that I will be able to do the tap and go sort of payments via HIVER app.

      • +1

Pretty sure you just have to wait for the card to arrive despite their assertion that you can use it instantly or whatever. The 5% cashback is about the only good thing about them, but free money is cool.

        • If you have to wait for physical card, then can't use Hiver on this deal. Won't come in time, eh?

          • @caperite: I signed up on a Sunday (01/05) at the time and received on the Thursday (05/05), so if you sign up this week you should be right.

            • @Miss B: I signed up last night after reading another thread you put together, eligible merchants for 5% cashbacks. Well done. Good job. Cheers

        • I'm hoping that I'll get it within a week so maybe have two days (Mon and Tue) at the least to use it.

    • +3

EFTPOS & Visa Debit transactions are limited to the amount of money in your account at the time of your transaction.

There is currently a $1,000 daily cash limit for ATM withdrawals.
If you need to increase your card limit (maximum of $2,000 per card per day), you can send us an in-app message and we'll be happy to help.

      • +1

Confirmed with Hiver chat that you need to use the insert and PIN method of payment.

No problem, Daanish! Unfortunately there is a $500 limit on PayWave and Google Pay transactions per day. If you take your physical card into the store, you can make a purchase up to any amount if you insert the card and use the 'Credit' option. If you have the balance available, the payment will be processed.

  • +1

Could use these to buy the next half-day crash in lettuce prices, buy up lettuce, and resell said lettuce for 3x profit when the price pumps.
Lettuce hope they leaf us some $250 GCs.

    [awaiting input from rektrading]

  • Thank you OP.

  • -3

    Anyway to cash these?

    • -2

fyi, previously we cashed with wise if people are trying to neg for no reason

  • So to pay these for ATO, how does it work really?
Is it like adding funds onto Amazon account as Amazon credit?
So load these cards onto the payment portal and they’ll be available in ATO account for future debits?

    • +1

Yes, that’s how I do it

      • Except there is a small fee.

  • HI, Can i buy 1 x $250 mastercard gift card with balance from 2 x The Perfect Gift Cards?

    • It is only possible at a standard checkout (i.e. a checkout operated by an individual staff member).

You cannot do split payments between two cards at a Coles self checkout if you're purchasing a gift card.

      • Great thanks!
Would the staff member allow that with this particular card?
        Cheers

        • In my experience, only one staff member at a Coles standard checkout has ever tried to stop me using a prepaid gift card to purchase a gift card, but their supervisor overruled them and said it was fine.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: That's because your are WookieMonster, most generous grand master of all cards! This aside, I reckon that this Coles MC gift card can be paid with Coles egift card. What other gift cards can also be paid with a Coles egift card? I recall Coles egift card can't be used to pay gift cards like Coles/Myer, Bunnings.

            • +3

@F1ngolf: Haha to be fair, I get along quite well with that supervisor! I reckon they did a favour for me by bailing me out of that situation.

Coles gift cards cannot be used to purchase any gift cards issued by Coles Group (e.g. Coles Group & Myer, Officeworks, First Choice Liquor). The checkout system will block you, much like how the checkout system will block you if you try to use Flybuys Dollars or a Coles Groceries gift card to purchase any gift card at Coles.

Bunnings gift cards should be fine. I’ve purchased Bunnings gift cards in the past using Coles gift cards with zero issues, even through a self checkout. Bunnings gift cards are issued by Bunnings or Wesfarmers (definitely not Coles Group), so its purchase and activation is handled differently to gift cards issued by Coles Group.

              • @WookieMonster: In recent coles promo with vanilla gc, the selfcheckout system automatically asked if i want to use the 10$ which I did and less 10$ to 5 vanilla gc that I purchased. I used to be a coles mc holder. I only tried it once in my local coles though.

                • +2

@SabreTooth23: It sounds like you’re referring to the redemption method where a Flybuys account linked to a Coles Financial Services product (e.g. Coles credit card, Coles insurance, Coles personal loans) can have 2000 Flybuys points from its points balance instantly converted into a $10 discount. You can apply this discount to purchases of third-party gift cards, but not gift cards issued by Coles Group.

I personally don’t like this redemption method, because Coles treats the $10 as a discount (rather than $10 paid by a payment method), so you’ll have 10 less points awarded to you than if you redeemed that $10 as Flybuys Dollars. However, considering that Flybuys Dollars cannot be used as a payment method for any gift cards at Coles, I think a lot of people would happily lose out on 5c worth Flybuys points for a $10 instant discount.

  • -1

Not sure if this question already been asked but can I buy this gc using coles gc?
