    • could i ask whether youre doing this thru the app or website,

i've never used it before and currently trying on website but its kinda confusing

      • Both worked for me equally well.

Pick AUD account. Select 'Add'. Enter amount. Pick 'debit card'. Enter card details. Click to confirm.

Any ideas on what to buy with $18.70 ;)

    • Petrol

You can split your payment 3 times with 7 Eleven

      $18.70, $18.70, $18.70

Groceries from Woolies. Not sure if there is a limit per transaction. I have used 3 cards for a single transaction.

      • +1

There may be but about 4 years ago I collected up my physical Wish GCs with little bits left on them and used 11 in one transaction at the self-service check out in Lane Cove Woolworths.

        • +1

Excellent. Sounds like, at least back then, there was no limit. If I do use more than 2 cards, I'll be sure to use self-checkout. No sense in making a harried staff member suffer with me.

        • Did you end up with a receipt that was 6ft long?

          • +2

@JIMB0: Many people do 5x1c transactions for their ING requirements so I don’t see this as an issue.

            • @danielh: I do this with a Westpac card each month. Usually I do it at Coles though because I find their self service UI is better for entering multiple $0.01 transactions.

          • @JIMB0: I didn't measure it but that would be in the ballpark. I used several GCs at JB Hi-Fi once and I think their receipt was longer.

  • -3

How many did you need to use up?
    A: 0-10
    B 11-30
    C 31-100
    D 101+

      What do you mean?

  • -2

Hi many $18.70 cards are needing to be spent?

    • Just five.

  • +3

I used on of these on Aliexpress. The total order was for US$140, and the amount charged to the card was AU$203.5.
At the time foreign exchange rate was $203.6. That's remarkably good! Next to no fees or losses

    • Foreign currency transaction fee 2.5 %. Please update us if the fee applies separately and later.

      • Nothing so far. Maybe I did something wrong, or maybe Aliexpress did a sneaky and billed in USD but charged the AUD equivalent, but yeah. So far so good

        • I would use up the remaining balance ASAP. Previous card issuer would charge it later so that the balance might go negative. It was charged upfront after the hack topic.

          • @Neoika: Advice taken. Transfered the remaining 6.95 to amazon gift card.

Can't log in to check the balance now, but will try again in a few days to see if its gone negative

            • -1

@outlander: From experience, the foreign tx fee gets charged when the transaction settles.

It will be interesting to see if you end up with a negative balance on that card.

    • +1

aliexpress charges through its melbourne entity. so no foreign transaction fee as long as you select AUD at checkout.

Flybuys has definitely changed its algorithm.

After collecting points for ten $250’s, I got an offer of 1200 bonus points with $30 spend today.

    • I can see the same offer

  • Not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but you can't use card for direct debit payments, wouldn't work.

    • Is this for bill payment?

I’m planning to set this up for Optus direct debit bill so is there a chance it won’t work?

      • +1

Yep I did it for Optus (both mobile and the A8 tab), my mobile one was due first and received a message that direct debit failed. Paid online with the same card and went through fine so looks like just can't process via direct debit.

        • +1

I just read the FAQ and it aligns with what you're saying:

Can I use my Card to pay for recurring billing or monthly subscriptions?
No, your Card cannot be used to pay for recurring billing or monthly subscriptions.

          https://www.mybalancenow.com/faq

        • May i know how did you pay for the A8 plan manually? It doesn't seem to allow me to pay for this plan in the app nor on the website?

          • @truetypezk: Use this link, all you need is the account number and you can nominate the amount you want to pay. Same I don't get a bill or notification for the A8 plan odd enough.

            • @Craze: I see, thanks a lot for the info!
I have contacted the customer service earlier and they told me this plan is by direct debit only, that s why we don't even get a bill for it.
Btw do you know if we can bpay to this plan?

              • @truetypezk: Not sure about Bpay as I haven't tried, but don't see why not. I know Bpay is possible for normal mobile plans so can't see this as any different.

I also contacted customer service via chat and they can confirm my A8 plan is currently in credit so all good :)

  • does anyone who have used their hiver card to purchase these received their cash back already?

    • No. I was expecting $250 but nothing so far.

    • +1

      Hiver payments are in!

      • Not yet for me, patiently waiting for mine :)

      • Nothing for me yet. Were your Hiver payments based on Coles mastercard purchases? All of mine were (>$5000 worth of Coles MC).

      • Still haven't received mine.

      • Are there any side rules I needed to follow like keeping a positive balance etc? Right now my account has $0 in it.

        • Not that I saw. Last month I received it on the 7th. Sit tight

        • +1

Nope. I spent most of my $5000 for the year on these cards and received exactly the right amount of cashback yesterday into a $0 balance account.

          • @daanish: Thanks. Still $0 for me as at 6 July. My circumstances were:
            - New account opened the week of the Coles Mastercard deal
            - $5k+ added to the account
            - ~$70 spent in non rebate valid place to test the card (worked)
            - just over $5k spent on Coles Mastercards
            - $0 balance remaining

Just waiting for the $250 to be added now.

            • @danielh: As long as your transactions posted as Supermarkets and Groceries you should be fine. Hiver can't find out what you actually bought at Coles and further many people have been paid out on the gift cards already so they're obviously not worried.

            • @danielh: I can confirm that $250 has now been deposited into my account on 7 July 2022.

          • @daanish: I'm pretty much on the same boat as danielh and still have not received mine.. lol

  • +2

It appears that Hiver has changed its T&C and large in store purchases may not be possible in the future.

    • I saw that in the terms prior to the offer and didn’t expect to get paid out. Easy to get around though…

        Do tell…

  • Something very strange just happened. I tried to add one of my $250 card to PayPal, and the errors said it’s already linked to another PayPal account. I just opened it out of the packet, which didn’t look compromised. I checked the balance and it still has full balance. Of course I’ve used it right away. I wonder if it’s something to be worried about for my other cards. Anyone else experienced this?

    • I’ve had success with using it for PayPal with Menulog but it didn’t work for me with Pizza Hut once

      • +1

My concern is that it said card has been linked to another Paypal account, when I’ve never used it. I’m worried about possible security breach.

        • Yeah I haven’t noticed that but only added two cards

  • I need to pay a bill of 1800 dollars, but they doesn't accept split payments. They accept credit card payment. Not sure if I could use these cards to pay for it? I am happy to pay a fee for these of course.

    • +1

The common method suggested is to attempt to pay the bill over the counter (i.e. in-person) at Australia Post. However, this assumes:

      • You can pay the bill at Australia Post.

      • The biller (i.e. the company asking for the $1800) allows split payments at Australia Post. (Some billers do not allow this, but some do.)

      • The biller accepts Mastercards. (Some billers do not allow this, but some do.)

      • The staff member at the counter knows how to do split payments. The only time I attempted this at Australia Post, the staff member struggled for two minutes on how to do split payments before finally figuring out a way to do it.

      • The staff member at the counter is willing to allow you to use prepaid gift cards as a payment method. Some staff have been trained to stop anyone from using prepaid gift cards as a payment method for bills at Australia Post.

Honestly, I think the easiest option is to pay the $1800 out of your own pocket and then use the $1800 in Coles Mastercard gift cards on other items.

I've been trying to check my balance since last night and it's giving "A system error has occurred, please try again later"

The mybalancenow website leaves a lot to be desired…

    • +1

Funny. Worked for me a few minutes ago on two cards ($250 ones) but when I tried for a third one ($100), it failed.

    • It has been hit and miss from PC. From my mobile , the website always worked .

    • I had the same error yesterday morning when I tried (desktop), but seems to be working again, tried 5 mins ago.

      • I find it much easier to just call the number if I just want the balance but not the transaction details. Same with pretty much any other prepaid Visa/MC cards except the old Coles MC card, which has the only user friendly online portal without asking too many annoying details/forcing stupid registration just for you to log in.

        • Only1visa has decent Website, so does perfect eftpos.

          • @vinnychase: For O1V, the new one is okayish, except for the silly captcha. As for the old one, that is what I am referring to by saying forcing stupid registration just for you to log in. It is the worst site ever.
Eftpos is a different story, all prepaid eftpos cards can be accessed with their full 19 digit card numbers (The 5021xxx one). The security risk for eftpos cards are much lower in comparison to V/M cards.

      • I tried just now on mobile, didn't work but worked on desktop. Seems temperamental.

  • Anyone here able to pay ATO bill at post office using these coles mastercard gift cards ? I just tried using this card and by swiping and I get one cheque or savings option. No credit option.

Tried both cheque and savings, entered some random pin but got an error saying “account incorrect”

    • Just use the ATO website. Best to only do 2 or 3 per day.

      • My outstanding is $0 and haven't lodged BAS yet for the last quarter. I don't see a way to pre-pay. Any tips please ?

      • +1

I have done 5 x $249.50 in one day many times. But cannot do more than 5.

    • A random pin is definitely not going to work

      • any idea how to setup pin if I want to use savings option ?

        • +1

These cards operate on Mastercard Network(credit cards). Savings and Cheque are for Debit cards.

    • It does not work.

Billers have the ability to choose whether to accept Mastercard or Visa when you paying a bill over the counter at Australia Post. The ATO have opted out of accepting Mastercard and Visa for bills being paid at Australia Post.

The references you saw to Cheque and Savings on the EFTPOS terminal are for the EFTPOS network (which Coles Mastercard gift cards do not support). If you ever get your hands on an EFTPOS gift card (e.g. Perfect EFTPOS gift cards, Westfield EFTPOS gift cards), those can be used to pay for bills at Australia Post.

This may comment may help you, although ignore the figures given in that comment, as they’re based on the surcharge for Visa debit cards (which is higher than the surcharge for Mastercard debit cards).

EDIT: I just realised you replied to the comment linked above back in February 2022 lol

      • +1

        Thanks mate, that makes sense.
You are right, I was able to successfully use multiple Vanilla Visa GC's by making split payments at Aus post in Feb 2022.

Looks like either ATO updated to restrict payments using 'Credit' option or the post offices where I used back then have all updated their systems. Any idea if these will work on the self serve terminals in CBD post offices ?

        • Did you tell the Australia Post staff member you’d like to pay via Mastercard? When I went to Australia Post earlier this year to pay for a bill using prepaid gift cards (and no, it wasn’t an ATO bill), I told the staff member I’d like to pay via card. They asked me “do you mean EFTPOS Savings/Cheque or Mastercard/Visa?” It makes me wonder whether the Australia Post staff member needs to choose EFTPOS Savings/Cheque or Mastercard/Visa on their terminal before letting you use the EFTPOS terminal… or it could be that the ATO has opted out of accepting Mastercard and Visa cards.

The self-serve terminals at the Australia Post locations near me are all permanently closed, so I have no idea whether it would work at them.

          • +2

@WookieMonster: Yes - I did mention to the staff that I would like to pay with Mastercard. I went to two PO's today and both did check the payment options. They have actually turned around their monitor and showed me that the available options are only Cash/EFTPOS/Cheque.

            • @SydOzber: Damn, that’s annoying. Looks like the ATO has opted out of Mastercard and Visa via Australia Post over the counter now.

Silly question time… is it possible to use the Post Billpay website? (I’ve never actually managed to get my hands on an ATO payment slip, even though I tried for months to get the ATO to send me one, so I’m really shooting from the hip here…)

              • @WookieMonster: the website is prompting for a 4 digit Billpay code which is not on the ATO slip

                • @SydOzber: Looks like Post Billpay is not an option. The ATO website only mentions in-person payments at Australia Post as an option, so I guess you’re out of luck in terms of Australia Post.

                  • +1

@WookieMonster: There is a mention about this link on the ATO payment slip - https://www.governmenteasypay.gov.au/PayATO
Same surcharges as ATO website but we may be able to work around the 5 cards per day cap.

                    • @SydOzber: That was the payment portal linked in the comment I linked to you earlier.

The commenter mentioned there was definitely a limit of 5 payments per day, but I wonder whether this is in addition to the 5 payments per day limit you currently face on myATO…

                      • +4

@WookieMonster: I paid using 5 cards by logging in to ATO portal via Mygov earlier today and was just able to process another payment using 6th card via this website - https://www.governmenteasypay.gov.au/PayATO

Edit: Looks like payments made using the above portal are processed via Reserve Bank of Australia. Good thing is that the PRN and the $ value are retained so you don't need to enter it every time. Unlike ATO, the portal doesn't ask for Card holder name.

Edit2: Confirm I was able to make 5 payments via ATO and 5 payments via above website in a gap of 1 hour.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: The staff just activate a payment via the EFTPOS terminal. The credit/CHQ/sav option is controlled by the biller. This has been the case for many years now as apparently people were paying bills using credit cards where they weren't meant to, ie credit card bills.
