    • Thanks for providing the image/additional information. Deal post updated.

    • Hmmm, so does this mean then we can still purchase gift cards with this card at Woolworths and other sites like RACV etc?

      • +3

I’m assuming you’re referring this in the deal’s fine print?

Coles Mastercard Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase any other gift card sold at Coles.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that I don’t think there will be anything in Coles’ checkout system that will stop you from doing this. My guess is that it will be up to Coles staff to police this policy. I say this because the same restriction was in the Oct 2021 and Feb 2022 deals, yet I was able to use the prepaid gift cards in those deals to purchase other gift cards at Coles. I have only once been stopped by a Coles staff member for attempting to use a prepaid gift card to purchase a gift card, but they were overruled by their supervisor.

To answer your question, there is nothing in the Cardholder Agreement that specifically stops you from using it to purchase any gift cards. However, the Cardholder Agreement makes it clear that it is only accepted at the discretion of the merchant (and a good example of that is Coles). In terms of other merchants worth noting…:

        • Woolworths Group officially do not accept prepaid gift cards as a payment method on its online gift card portal. However, I think Woolworths Group is blocking prepaid gift cards based on bank identification numbers (BINs), because a lot of people were (briefly) able to use Vanilla Visa gift cards to purchase gift cards on that gift card portal. My guess is that Woolworths Group has not blocked Coles Mastercard Gift Cards (yet), because it uses a BIN I have not seen on any other Australian-issued prepaid gift cards. However, Woolworths Group will notice a surge in the number of people trying to use Coles Mastercard Gift Cards on their portal on Wednesday, so if it works, it will only work for a short period of time, so get in quick!

        • I was once told by a Woolworths staff member at a self-serve checkout that you cannot use prepaid gift cards to pay for any gift card in their stores, because their checkout system will block you. However, 15 seconds later, I proceeded to use a prepaid gift card to pay for a gift card and had no problems… I am aware of only two types of prepaid gift cards Woolworths (and BIG W) blocks from purchasing some gift cards in their stores. I actually swiped a Coles Mastercard Gift Card at the EFTPOS terminal when I was purchasing a gift card at Woolworths earlier this week and the system asked for a PIN or to press Enter. This is an indication that Woolworths will accept Coles Mastercard Gift Cards when you’re purchasing gift cards in their stores; if they did not accept Coles Mastercard Gift Cards, I would have got an Mastercard - Item Not Allowed error on the EFTPOS terminal as soon as I swiped it at the EFTPOS terminal.

        • I have not tested the prepaid gift card in this deal on the RACV portal, because I don’t have an RACV membership, plus the discounts on that portal are generally not very exciting to me. However, if a website requires a card to support 3D Secure, it will not accept the prepaid gift cards in this deal, as prepaid gift cards do not (and cannot) support 3D Secure.

        • I can confirm that the OLD purple packaging Mastercard prepaid cards worked on the RACV Portal. I will test it out on Wednesday with the new designed ones as we will be purchasing lots of Woolworth gift cards (well, assuming they are activated).

          • +1

@danielh: In that case, the new Coles Mastercard Gift Cards should work on the RACV portal.

There is nothing that different between the two prepaid gift cards in terms of how they function (besides the fact that the new Coles Mastercards Gift Cards use a new BIN).

Minimum 4 hour activation delay, I wonder if they will just add this for the sale, I had no delay yesterday

      • What's the point of this delay?
Do they mean maximum 4 hour delay?

        • Without the delay, one person can clean out a whole store within an hour with just an initial spend of $231.

The 4 hour delay prevents this. It spreads the available cards out to more customers.

          • @capslock: I have no idea what you are taking about with cleaning the store out.

But the delay had nothing to do with the sale, it is anytime you buy one of these cards

So the Mastercard Gift Cards essentially acts as a debit card?

Not sure if this was answered already but I had 2 questions:
    1. Does anyone know if you can use these at a post office to pay say your internet or event rent bills?
    2. Say you buy a bunch of these gift cards - what's the best way to keep track of all the gift cards balances so you could quickly call up and refute about fraudulent transactions?

    • +5

Coles Mastercard Gift Cards function very similarly to a debit card, except for the fact that:

      • Prepaid gift cards are missing some security features found in pretty much all Australian-issued debit cards (e.g. 3D Secure, which allows a merchant to ask your card issuer to verify you are the cardholder via two-factor authentication).

      • The card issuer will also not stop any transactions that may be suspicious; if a merchant will accept it and you are not at the limited number of excluded merchant types (e.g. gambling, automatic fuel dispensers) and you use a PIN or signature to verify you are the cardholder, the card issuer will approve it. This is unlike a lot of banks, where they will use algorithms to step in and decline transactions if something is very suspicious about it (e.g. the transaction is taking place in another country).

      In terms of your questions:

      1. You can use Coles Mastercard Gift Cards at Australia Post to pay bills, as long as the biller accepts Mastercard as a payment method (and some only support cash, cheque and EFTPOS SAV/CHQ), the biller permits split payments (assuming you want to use more than one card to pay a bill) and the Australia Post staff member lets you do this. The last bit is important, because Australia Post apparently (officially) does not allow people to use prepaid gift cards to pay for bills. However, some staff seem to be unaware of this restriction or simply don’t enforce it, plus there is currently nothing in the Australia Post system to stop you from doing so. If I were you, I would mention to staff that I want to use a card or Mastercard as a payment method. If I mentioned anything about gift card or prepaid gift card to the staff member, it probably would not go down well…

      2. I personally keep track of my prepaid gift cards by sticking a small sticky note on the front of them and update the balance on the sticky note as I redeem funds from it. It’s not exactly a sophisticated method, but it works for me.

      • +5

Love your work thanks WookieMonster :)

      • you may not know this, but do you know whether auspost will incur cc /mc surcharges over the counter on bills? just looking at a rego bill right now and there's a 0.52% mc surcharge if paying online. curious whether this is the same if OTC at the post office

edit: looking at the auspost website for Post BillPay and there's no mention of CC fees… or even a need to visit a post office to begin with seeing as post bill pay can be done online on their website…

        • +2

Australia Post will not charge you a surcharge for any Mastercard or Visa payments for bills paid over the counter in their physical stores, but:

          • Some billers will only accept cash, cheque and EFTPOS SAV/CHQ payments at Australia Post.

          • Some billers will not allow you to pay for a bill using more than one card.

          • Some billers will charge you an additional fee for paying a bill at Australia Post. This isn’t really relevant for a rego bill, but if you paid your electricity bill over the counter, you may find that your electricity provider will charge you on the next bill for paying the last bill in-person. There are usually waivers in place on a concession, but it is still something to be mindful of.

          • Some Australia Post staff members will stop you if they realise you are using a prepaid gift card to pay for a bill.

In terms of the Post Billpay website, I’m not sure whether prepaid gift cards are accepted on there, as that is something I have not tested myself. You could always link a prepaid gift card to your PayPal account and then use PayPal as a payment method, but you’ll only be able to pay bills up to the available balance on one Coles Mastercard Gift Card.

  • Is it time to put out of stock on this post for the $250? Do stores restock mid sale?

    • It hasn’t even started yet

    • +3

Out of stock? A store I visited today still has $100 and $250 denominations in stock and on the gift card shelf.

Stores will restock if/when they receive new stock. For the record, gift card stock is not sent to stores in the large trucks you may see in a loading dock adjacent to a store…

      • In some areas, a gift card distributor will send a representative to a store with gift cards and have them restock the gift card shelves in a store.

      • However, in most areas, a store will be sent fresh stock of gift cards via a courier, and then it would be up to store staff to restock the gift card shelves.

Keep in mind that some stores may have decided to put stock of $100 and/or $250 gift cards either in the gift card storage area or at the service desk, so it is away from people wanting to hide them in the freezer section (as an example).

      • +1

Thanks. Wasn’t serious about the out of stock. It’s just my stores and it’s kind of funny. I should have put some away when the deal was first announced.

      • A few Coles I've been in the last couple of days only have $50 and $100 cards, no signs of $250. Hopefully as you said they're just stashing away in preparation for next week!

  • So how do i use these cards if I plan to change my building insurance and they expect a full payment? What do you do in this situation?

    • If you really want to do it, you can try buying a cheap policy at first (sub-$250) and make gradual changes towards your target insured sum/excess, while making sure each change has a premium increment <$250.

    • Simple answer - you can't.

  • +1

My local Coles has a big stash of $100 ones but the $250 ones are all missing.

    • Same. Been cleaned out

  • Can confirm my local Coles has plenty of $250 gift cards already stocked on the shelves

Decent stack of $250 at Coles Ed Square.

    $1250 outlay to get $93.50

Is it really worth the effort?

    • Yes.

    • +2

No one forcing anyone to get it if they deem it "unworthy".

    • +2

When you can prepay ATO/Council Rates/Private Health Insurance with this @~7% net discount when normally you pay face value, if it’s not worth it hand over your OzB licence

      • +2

Exactly that's what I'll be doing. Prepaying any and every bill I can where possible.

        • How can you pay bills with Coles prepaid Mastercard? I went to a Australia post today and the stuff there said they didn’t accept prepaid gift card to pay bills. I’d like to prepay some money to my strata and council rate but don’t know how to do it.

  • If you buy the $250 GCs, you get a 7.48% discount AFTER Tax….eg if you are in the top tax bracket you will need to earn nearly 15% more to get the 7.48% discount in your pocket. Having said that, really hard to find any $250 GCs at Coles in Sydney atm. 😞…and the promo has even started yet!

    • What does this have to do with your tax bracket?

      • -1

Since you're buying something (close to) discounted cash, and can pay for things that are never discounted normally, you would have to make even more money at your 9-5 to increase your spending power by the same amount

  • Hope they stock it up across all stores. Thanks OP

    • Fully stocked at mine today

  • The split barcode looks like it will be a pain to scan.

Also the no pin thing is bad. It was mentioned in this deal posting that it might be possible to set on first use. I don't think that will be the case.

    • +3

The split barcode looks like it will be a pain to scan.

Would it be a pain? I’ve purchased nearly 50 Vanilla Visa gift cards and 2 Coles Mastercard Gift Cards; they both have split barcodes, but I’ve never had issues with scanning them.

If there are issues, you can always manually punch in the barcode number (although that would be a massive pain, particularly with how long the barcode number is…)

Also the no pin thing is bad.

I agree it is a pain, especially since Australian financial institutions made a massive effort in 2014 to phase out signature verification on nearly all of their cards.

I was able to set a PIN for a Coles Mastercard Gift Card yesterday through the website where you check the gift card balance, but I have not tested whether the PIN I set actually works. It is something I am hoping to test later today at a store.

      • +1

please let us know how you went with the pin

        • Unfortunately, I forgot that a lot of stores approve Mastercard payments without a PIN or signature for small amounts, and I store I went to did that…

      • Online purchases don’t require a PIN so would be superfluous. If physical card was stolen it might prove helpful if they weren’t automatically approved. Do they replace stolen cards? One of the Him cards had a fee to replace (however it was waived due to their card error)

        • +1

Online purchases don’t require a PIN so would be superfluous.

Good point. However, I mostly use prepaid gift cards for in-store purchases, so knowing whether it supports a PIN is definitely useful.

          Do they replace stolen cards?

Maybe? Clause 10 of the Cardholder Agreement is rather non-committal about this. It sounds like to me that they can replace stolen cards, but only at their discretion. It also sounds like a lot of paperwork needs to be provided to them before they approve or decline any such requests.

  • +1

Is $100 still worth buying if can't find $250 ones?

Can see a bunch of $100 in my local store but none for $250.

    • +1

If you don't mind the slightly reduced discount

    • Free money is free money. Use it on GC deals

    • Yes. It’s not as good obviously but I used the 5 card minimum on both family flybuys cards just to get 2000 bonus points on the $100 card a few months ago.
This offer is better on the $100 card.

      • @heretosave, can you explain this a bit further? I'm a novice at Flybuys offerings.

        • +1

Flybuys had an offer a few months ago.

I suspect to clear out the old Cole’s Mastercard Gift Cards.

They were offering 2000 bonus points for a $100 card.

That considering the $5 fee worked out to be just under 5% savings on a $100 card.

In the current offer $100 card costs $94.50.

          I purchased 10 x $100 cards today.

Also managed to secure some $250 cards.

Met a fellow ozbargain follower at one of my local Coles. He taught me another trick. Keep under $1000 per buy.

          • @HereToSave: Gotcha. I missed that previous 2k pts for $100 gc offering. I only tend to buy gcs when I'm trying to hit a min spend so must not have been paying attention.

Why did he suggest staying <$1k per buy? Does he believe this impacts the deals you'll be offered?

            • +1

@caperite: To be fair, the last Coles Gift Mastercard promotion at Coles was only advertised in newspapers (and eventually OzBargain).

Purchases of gift cards costing $1,000 or more requires additional approval from a supervisor or duty/store manager at Coles.

This means you may need to wait a couple of minutes for the right staff member to come over and approve the transaction (which happened to me once).

I actually spoke to a Coles self checkout assistant this evening, and they complained about having at least 30 customers go through the self checkouts during their shift and wanting to purchase 5x $250 gift cards. Each customer would have to wait for a supervisor to come over and approve a transaction (if they chose to approve it, and they actually declined some transactions!). Some of the customers were getting quite grumpy about having to wait or having their transactions declined by staff members, and they were taking it out on the self checkout assistant…

              • +1

@WookieMonster: I didn’t scan my flybuys for any of the purchases.
I didn’t think you’d get points to be honest so didn’t bother.

  • So there will be flybuys points for this card too? So 5 cards per day we can buy ? As many as we want if we can find them? Any limit on flybuys purchase for this card like 10 limit in total?

    • Earning flybuys points seems to be hit-and-miss on these gift card deals. In most cases you get them. Some people report scanning flybuys is a bad idea as your “targeted deals” and “min spend” for bonus offers will be negatively impacted by your high spend. Personally I’d rather get bonus points on gift cards purchased than unpredictable offers!

    https://ibb.co/1nTP70s

Interestingly they even positioned all the MasterCard in the middle of the gift card shelf, very prominent and easy to find!

    • Where is that? I have been to 3 stores and can’t see any

      • Coles Rouse Hill (NSW)!

    • Wow!!! Nothing like that at my local

  • +1

It will it work just after midnight if I have a 24-hour Coles near me?

    • It should, because there is no specific start time for this deal.

I have never been to a 24 hour Coles though, so I don’t know for certain…

  • The coles I go all the time only had $50 and $100 cards left when I checked tonight. Will go tomorrow morning 6am to check the $250 ones.

  • Can i use Coles gift cards from Shopback or Prezzee to buy this Mastercard Gift Cards ?

  • good luck everybody!

  • +6

Just tried the 24 hour Coles at Burwood East (VIC). No stock of $100s or $250s and overheard the staff saying there would be none out until 6 or 7am when the manager with access started their shift.

They also tried to say the special didn’t start until 7am and that this was written in the catalogue, but there’s no time in the catalogue.

    • +1

i bought 5x100 at around 12:05am so it works fine at that time when the day ticks over. Got dressed down by the checkout lady as apparently they didn't have stock and asked where i found them. I had gone in at 11:45ish and just picked them up off the shelf and walked around store until it was next day

      • Nothing like a bit of a reprimand in exchange for some sick savings 😎

        • +7

Checkout lady told me she didn't want to see me again, so I asked when does your shift end.

        • +1

Yeah the level of vitriol from her was surprising to be honest. She asked if i had hidden them, I dislike the people hiding them in freezers as much as her but making a baseless accusation like that was very off putting, not to mention she wasn't using her head as why would i be hiding $100 ones and not the $250 ones?

          • @peter05: Should make a big fuss.

Bunnings once accused me of returning a used product when it was faulty. I made sure everyone in the shop knew how they treated their customers.

    • Staff seem to make things up a lot about this deal - when it starts, how many you can buy, what id you have to show, not 5 per person but only 5 per family - have all been reported. I was told by a supervisor that it was illegal for them to sell me even the allowed amount. She told me this while flanked by 2 other staff members. Just seems to bring out the worst in them.

      • Got a new one. The check-out operator asked me if I had purchased any of the cards that day.

  • Could I buy 5 cards in a day, and tomorrow buy another 5 cards, does the discount still work for next payment?

    • +2

The limit is per transaction. Nothing stops you from buying several times per day.

  • Morning! There are tons available ($250 and $100) at Coles Boronia. 10+ available, I just took 5. Be quick though, some people are calling over the phone and reserving them

  • Can someone confirm these new cards work online?
The auspost gift card issued by hertiage bank didn't, a couple years ago.

    • +2

Considering I’ve used mine at the ATO and the Woolworths Group gift card portal, yes, it works at a lot of online merchants.

I also used an Australia Post Gift Card online this year, and it worked fine.

      • How long did it take on the Woolworths gift card portal? I’ve been waiting 5 hours so far.

        • It took me about 90-100 minutes yesterday afternoon.

However, some other people in that deal have commented they have been waiting a number of hours (like you).

I wonder whether someone has to manually approve each transaction or something. It's strange, considering Woolworths Group usually send out gift cards within 10 minutes.

          • +1

            @WookieMonster: Yeah that’s what I thought.
It’s interesting. You’d think Woolies would love this, taking money directly from coles.
I got the Home and Him cards too.
