Are these the cards that get scammed with nil balance issue?

    • +1

      Yes they are.

Saw one lady open up a pack at Coles, claimed to be activated but failed to work.

    • +2

Yes, they got the issue before but not sure if it has been fixed or not.
I bought a few before and had no issue spending it.
But I'm not buying them anymore unless I want to use them immediately after activiation.

    • +1

Yes but you can call them to lock the card until ready to use it.

  • Thanks. Will buy one today.

  • +1

    Is this nationwide?

    • +5

Just rang the Coles Mastercard number and they said it is

  • +1

Is it same like last time only limited to a particular state??

But even then man, will be locked to flybuys

so not really a $10 instead more like $8.5 real value IMO (still not bad though)

    • OP's profile shows VIC.

      • +1

Just rang the Coles Mastercard number and they said it is nationwide

    • +1

Its $10 spend in Coles, you can use it to buy essentials, so I reckon $10 flybuys is equal to $10, unless you never shop at Coles and it would depend on how you use it of course.

If you purchase products which costs the same somewhere else, like bread, milk etc

    • you can also buy other giftcards for other shops using flybuy points either online or in store. I always buy nintendo eshop giftcard from kmart using flybuys points

  • Wondering why it is not in their catalogue?

    • +4

Could be limited to a particular state.

FlyBuys were very unhelpful (on hold for over 30 minutes only for the operators to hang up claiming they couldn't hear me) when I tried to call to enquire about it.

      • Checked the T&C's below the banner, cannot see it is state limited.

I bought a couple before the warning was put up. Ended up buying them without the bonus points. On the flyer posted, no indication it was NSW only.

        • +1

Well, it's on Herald Sun so it must be in Melbourne
that's the only thing I need to know, haha

          • +1

@AsukaST: Just rang the Coles Mastercard number and they said it is nationwide

      • -4

Why on earth would you stay on the phone for over 30minutes… for a flybuys promo lol.

  • can you do multiple card purchases? e.g. 2 x $100 = 4000 pts?

    • +4

Max 5 for each Flybuys account.

    • +2

From the T&C's at the bottom of the ad: BONUS POINTS can be awarded more than once for each Gift Card type including different denominations of the same Gift Card but can only be collected up to 5 times per Flybuys account.

  • +4

Just a note - buying these can blow out your weekly spend goal for those 4 week/10,000 points offers they have.
Might be best to have a second account in the family just for these

    • +13

Precisely why my dog has a flybuys account!

      • +1

My pet goldfish has a flybuys account too, each one of them haha

        • +1

They must be having a fully waterproof phone as well. Because, now you need a mobile number to be linked to a flybuys account.

          • @jsb: Same mobile number linked to some of my family accounts. Real people at least.

          • @jsb: Not when I signed up. Must be a recent requirement. I've got all the flybuy accounts I need already.

    • Thought they fixed that already.

    • +1

Multiple flybuys account will solve that.

I find it works quite well, you should have multiple Flybuys and Woolworths rewards accounts and just use them on rotation.

I find that there's always a nice spend and earn offer on at least one of those accounts at either flybuys and/or Woolorths rewards, eg spend $50 per week for 4 weeks to get 10k flybuy points. That's 25% off if you value $1 Flybuys dollar = $1.

    • +1

buying these can blow out your weekly spend goal for those 4 week/10,000 points offers they have

What do you mean by this? I get how the most value is derived from spending just the right amount each week for these 4 week spend deals, but is there some other disadvantage of spending too far beyond spend target?

      • +1

You will get higher spend targets in your offer

        • +1

          Thanks for clarifying!

  • Is this national wide?
Herald Sun is a local newspaper?

    • +1

The picture is of sufficient quality that you can read the fine print. It appears to be nation-wide, as it just says available in Coles supermarkets, it doesn't have any geo restrictions.

I will check out my local coles later, pretty good deal. Just use it asap in case they get hacked again.

      • Thank you for reply.
I will have a try today as well

may be good if we buy using commbank offers. i got 5$ off for $100. few got $30 or something

    • Took a punt with my $60 off $200. See how it goes.

  • +2

$5 purchase fee is a rip off, should be free

  • I was able to pay for these with Coles gift cards last time. Hope this helps save even more

    • When was this, I thought they stopped buying credit cards with gift cards a while back

      • +1

Last time this offer was on may be like a month or 2 back. Yeah I previously didn't think it was possible but used a Coles gift card since I bought some groceries on top of this in the same transaction and it worked for more than just the grocery values. Thereafter when buying another I think I paid much more with a gift card and was surprised even the cashier didn't say anything against using a gift card to but another gift card

  • What is the benefit of this offer bedsides $5.00 saving. Am I missing something

    • +3

About 5%, which is a lot better than bank interest rates, plus it is tax free.

      • +1

And for those who need to hit CC spend…

I think I will give this a miss, 10% off total is much better as that included the activation fee, where else this is only bonus points. Shame, all the recent GC deals are offering points instead of straight discount (I can understand why).

    • +6
      • If you’re trying to meet the minimum spend on a credit card sign-up offer, this is a relatively fast way of doing that, plus the bonus points you’ll get from this deal offset will more than offset the gift card purchase fee.

      • If you have an AMEX, you can use it to purchase this and then redeem it at merchants that either do not accept AMEX or charge a (higher) surcharge for AMEX. You can use this gift card at in-store merchants who would otherwise surcharge for AMEX, and some (not but not all) online merchants will accept this gift card.

      • You can use this to make payments to merchants classified as a government. Nearly all credit cards will award zero reward points if you spend any money at such merchants (plus any spend at such merchants will almost always not count towards any minimum spend for credit card sign-up offers). However, if you purchase one of these gift cards first, your spend at Coles is eligible for credit card rewards points and can count towards any minimum spend for credit card sign-up offers.

      • These are especially handy if you’re sending payments to the ATO (e.g. you have a tax debt, a HELP loan account, etc). The ATO only charges a 0.2% surcharge for Mastercard debit/prepaid card transactions (which is what ATO’s financial institution classifies these gift cards as), whereas they charge more for Visa debit/prepaid, Visa credit, Mastercard credit and AMEX transactions.

      • You can use these to prepay some accounts (e.g. health insurance, electricity/gas, telecommunications). However, this is not possible for all accounts.

      • Maybe you could give this as a gift to someone in lieu of cash or a store-specific gift card as well? (To be fair, a Prezzee gift card is probably a better gift, because you don’t have to worry as much about your Prezzee gift card being “hacked”…)

      • These can be used to “hide” your spending from a spousal equivalent, a bank, etc.

      • These can also be used to enable money laundering or fraud, but I doubt you’d describe those as “benefits”…

      • +2

        Very insightful and helpful. Thanks

        • +1

Btw, I forgot to mention this in my comment before, but it isn’t a “$5.00 saving”.

You will earn 2,000 bonus Flybuys points for each Coles Gift Mastercard you purchase through this deal (up to 5 gift cards, excluding WA). I have emphasised “bonus”, because you actually earn 1x standard Flybuys point for every $1 you spend on third-party gift cards1 at Coles every day (even on the gift card purchase fee). Essentially:

          • If you purchase a $100 Coles Gift Mastercard through this deal, you’ll get 105 standard points and 2,000 bonus points. 2,105 Flybuys points is equivalent to $10.52 in Flybuys Dollars.

          • If you purchase a $250 Coles Gift Mastercard through this deal, you’ll get 257 standard points and 2,000 bonus points. 2,257 Flybuys points is equivalent to $11.28 in Flybuys Dollars.

          1. “Third-party gift cards” are all gift cards that are not issued by Coles Group. A list of gift cards issued by Coles Group can be found here. The gift card in this deal is a “third-party gift card”, because it is issued by Indue, not Coles Group. Coles Group merely let Indue use the Coles brand to help promote the card (which I don’t think is a good idea…).

          • @WookieMonster: So I spend $105 for $110.52 in return or I can increase it with coles gift card I buy for 4% off so I save $9.72 for each $100. That is 9.72 multiplied 5 times. About 48.60

            • @raj76: That sounds about right if:

              • You can access $500 worth of Coles Gift Cards @ 4%. Coles is notorious for requiring a lot of the discount gift card portals selling Coles gift cards to have per-week or per-month purchase limits. I can only access $200 worth of Coles gift cards @ 4% off this week, and my next-best source at the moment only sell Coles gift cards @ 3% off. Maybe you’re luckier than me!

              • You can find a staff member at your local Coles willing to let you use gift cards as a payment method. My personal experience is that staff members at serviced checkouts (the ones where the staff member packs your bag for you or the service desk where tobacco is typically sold) at my local stores usually deny my requests to pay for a gift card using a gift card, because it is against the Terms of Use to do this, plus some staff have been trained to deny any such requests. I rarely purchase gift cards at a self-service checkout using Coles gift cards, because it is not exactly straightforward to do this.

              • You do not end up with Coles Groceries & Returns gift cards. This may seem a bit odd, but Prezzee one time accidentally restocked their Coles gift cards with Coles Groceries & Returns gift cards. The reason this is important is that if you swipe or scan a Coles Groceries & Returns gift card in a transaction where you’re purchasing any type of gift card, you’ll always get an error message, and staff have no way to bypass it.

              • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks for all the information, I really do appreciate it 👍👍

              • @WookieMonster: Do u think this could work:
                1. exchange Prezzee to $100 Coles gc
                2. buy the $100 master card ($105) and claiming $10 off flybuys to make it fully covered by the $100 Coles gc (so, I'd end up with $100 MC and $5 Coles gc left)?

                • @hanofee: No, you pay $105 now, receive 2000 pts later

                  • @AsukaST: I know, but if we have enough Flybuys, usually it offers $10 off right away, isn't it? The problem is my Prezzee denomination of only $100

                    • +1

@hanofee: Ok, the answer is still no.
You can't split pay when buying gift cards
and you can't use flybuys dollars to pay for gift cards.

                      • +4

@AsukaST: There is one way @ self-serve. Pay $5 cash first but not select split pay. Press go back for other payments after it.

                • @hanofee: Oops, sorry, I didn't see this comment until now. (It got lost in a sea of notifications!)

You cannot use Flybuys Dollars as a payment method for any gift cards at Coles. If you swipe your Flybuys card on the EFTPOS terminal on the payment screen, you'll get an Invalid Product Mix error.

However, if your Flybuys account is connected to a Coles Financial Services account (i.e. credit card, insurance policy, personal loan), that account has more than 2000 Flybuys points available and you scan the Flybuys card associated with that account before you go to the payment screen, you'll get a pop up message asking whether you'd like to redeem 2000 Flybuys points for a $10 discount. If you do that, it will bring the amount due to $95. If you're a self-serviced checkout, you'll need to cross your fingers and hope the machine is programmed to let you use a gift card as a payment method. If that is the case, you can use that $100 Coles gift card from Prezzee.

The (slight) downside of this method is that you'll only earn 95 standard Flybuys points (instead of 105 standard Flybuys points), as Coles treats the 2000 Flybuys points redemption as a discount, and the number of standard Flybuys points is calculated on the amount you spend after taking discounts into account. However, you will still be eligible to earn 2000 bonus Flybuys points through this deal.

                  • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks, that's exactly what I meant. Appreciate it. Tried it just now and it worked (I tried the $5 cash trick too for another card and worked fine)

              • @WookieMonster: Why is it not straightforward to purchase these at self checkouts using coles gift cards?

                • @sub102: It is if you have one that covers the total purchase.

                • @sub102: Some Coles self-service checkouts (e.g. the ones at the stores near me) are programmed so that if you scan a third-party gift card in a transaction, go to the payment screen and press Gift Card, you’ll get an error message telling you that you cannot use gift cards to pay for gift cards. However, some Coles self-service checkouts are not programmed to do this, so YMMV.

Then there’s the fact that you cannot do split payments at a self-service checkout when purchasing third-party gift cards unless you pay cash first and then go to redeem a gift card (and hope an error message does not appear on the screen).

                  • +1

@WookieMonster: Oh ok thanks for that detailed info! So if I get lucky I'll at a minimum need 1 coles gift card with at least $105 in it to get this at a self checkout

                    • +2

@sub102: Yep, or use cash to partially pay for the gift card and then have sufficient balance on the gift card to pay the rest of the amount owing.

For example, if you end up with a $100 Coles gift card and you want to buy a $100 Coles Gift Mastercard @ $105, you can pay $5 cash first and then go back and pay the $100 owing using a Coles gift card (and cross your fingers you don't trigger an error message in the process).

                      • @WookieMonster: Do you know whether flybuys dollars will work just like Coles gift cards in this instance?

                        • +2

@sub102: As I mentioned before, Flybuys Dollars will not work in this instance.

If you swipe your Flybuys card on the EFTPOS terminal at Coles and you're attempting to purchase any gift card in the transaction, you'll get an error message (Invalid Product Mix), and staff will have no way of bypassing it. This error will occur at both self-service and serviced checkouts.

      • LOL I thought you were a good boy : These can also be used to enable money laundering or fraud, but I doubt you’d describe those as “benefits”

  • called coles mastercard, and said no idea of the promotion.

    • +1

i think its best call coles to ask not coles mastercard

    • +1

of course they have no idea. It's a flybuys promotion.

  • +4

Downloaded yesterday's Herald Sun and can confirm offer. If you look at the high res, it says it's a national offer excluding WA on the right hand side of the ad.

    • thanks!

    • -1

Why WA is excluded? Border is open now. :)

      • Why would it not be excluded?

    • Unless I'm blind, the fine print does not state the offer isn't available in WA. What you see on the right is just a code for the ad or publication "NATexWA".
Is there any in-store promotion about this? I will try and get to Coles tomorrow.

      • I'm hopeful like you. Let us know how you go. Last time, I did not get my bonus points until after the promotion ended unfortunately.

        • I've had success calling up Flybuys and getting them to manually apply missing points. They checked their system and apologised that they weren't automatically credited. This was for buying gift cards too.

Anyone in WA able to confirm if this deal is actually available? Because I am totally not convinced by the fine print that WA is excluded, it's just a code for their advertising. NATexWA could potentially just mean that the newspaper ad ran nationally except in any WA newspapers.

          • @bonezAU: If you are so confident WA is not excluded and talk so much about calling Flybuys
why are you so reluctant to be the lab mouse?
Go test it and let everyone know.

            • @AsukaST: I'm not near a Coles at the moment and can't get to one until 4pm today. If anyone else in WA is near a Coles before then, they're welcome to test it. No need to get your knickers in a knot.

              • @bonezAU: Even if someone bought it today, it takes 1-2 days for the points to appear in you account.
I bought 5 yesterday morning and still waiting for the regular points.
So no, no one can test it for you.

              • @bonezAU: How did WA go in this? Any luck?

                • @HereToSave: I still haven't tried, sorry. I went shopping on Saturday but ended up only going to Woolies & Aldi.

  • Bugger. My brain was in neutral and I paid before I scanned my flybuys. Operator added it to the docket, but feel it may not go through under the offer, but just the total amount paid. If someone could let us know how long it takes to appear on their flybuys account plse. I may have to double down for a zero benefit as opposed to a $5 loss per card.

    • +1

It will work if the person added it correctly. It happened to me once years ago and I did the same.

      • Was that for a bonus offer, or just the normal flybuy points for the total purchase?

        • +1

Both, just as you have purchased it as normal.

          • @Neoika: It worked. Thanks to all. Now waiting for the dust to settle on the 1k instead of 2k.

    • +1

It should be ok as the rule is :

If you forgot to swipe your card and you shopped at Coles, you can return to the same store within seven days with your receipt and flybuys card and they can add the points your account.

    • +2

It will work. Happened to me in Jan this year. And the operator told me the same thing- will get the amount paid but maybe not the bonus points. But I received the bonus points; 2 days later

  • -1

There is no sign regarding this promo in my local Coles.
I ask the store manger at the counter and she said she isn't aware of it.
Well, I still got 5 anyway.

    • -8

If you have the info just fire . I don't know why you have to bug a store manager . No wonder they get pissed off.

    • +2

      Any bonus points arrived?

  • Just purchased two $100 cards for trial and will see if it works tomorrow.

  • can this be used online and/or link with your paypal account like the vanilla visa? Thanks

    • I believe yes.

  • ref 5 times per Flybuys account. so can you buy 5 all in the same transaction to get the bonus points or it has to be seperate transactions?
