    A quick reminder:

    • EG Australia / Caltex Woolworths locations are excluded. Those locations are owned and opereted by EG Group, not Ampol. Ampol merely supplies the fuel to (almost) all these locations.

    • There are currently three non-Ampol locations in Australia branded as Caltex that are actually directly licensing the Caltex trademark from Chevron. Those three locations are excluded from this deal. (Yes, that's right, both two separate companies are currently using the Caltex trademark in Australia.)

    • Some locations either do not accept Amex or will still charge a surcharge. In my experience, non-franchise locations (i.e. locations operated by Ampol Retail Pty Ltd) do not charge a surcharge for Amex, but YMMV. You could call up a location beforehand to ask whether they surcharge Amex, but you'll run the risk of being called prim and proper in the forums…

    • If you end up purchasing a physical AmpolCash gift card from this deal, you can redeem it at nearly all EG / Caltex Woolworths locations around Australia. I'm not sure if you can redeem them at the three EG locations in Australia with zero Caltex branding (Mittagong, Melton South, Sunbury). I called EG, but they could not give me a clear answer on those three locations. Btw, you cannot use physical AmpolCash gift cards to purchase any gift cards at EG / Caltex Woolworths. I tried this and got an error message.

    • If you end up purchasing a physical AmpolCash gift card and want to redeem it at a unmanned location, you will need to enable PIN verification. When you're purchasing the gift card, tell the staff member you'd like to set a PIN and they'll happily let you choose one. Alternatively, send an email to the AmpolCash team ([email protected]) with a copy of the purchase receipt and the gift card number, and they can enable PIN verification after the fact.

Some of this information is buried in the Fuel Discounts page.

Thanks WookieMonster. It happened to when last time Amex Ampol deal. I fueled up at Caltex but operates by EG Australia…..

      • Same happened to me.

Called station up to ask if they accept AMEX, yes they do. Go visit and fill up.

Find out later it was EG Group servo, no credit back :(

Had a giggle at prim and proper, what a clown

  • +2

My offer was spend $80, get $10 back.

    • Thanks, added to title/description

      • +2

        My offer was 70

  • Cool, checking now.

  • +1

just grab $100 gift card, with small car you hardly fill up that much lol

    • +1

Spend "in one or more transactions"

      • Depends how many cards (not “cars”) you have. A lot of petrol for some.

    • +1

      "in one or more transactions."

You can put $35/$40 in 1 time, then $35/$40 in the next time.

Although you probably won't be far off anyway, Even with the prices going down recently, 45L at $1.60/L (U91) is still $72. If you are using U95 or U98 then even more so.

    • +1

are you sure, last time cost me $160 for fill up.

    • +3

Grab $50 + $30 Amazon gift cards to maximise the cashback.

      • Not every Ampol sells it.

  • Ampol sells overpriced fuel in my area. At the end will most likely pay more overall than buying from other service stations.

    • +1

Not sure where you're located, but at least in NSW, the govt Fuel Check app is great for figuring out where the cheapest stuff is in your 'hood. Very often for me, with the 4c voucher, the Ampol's in my area are the cheapest so I guess YMMV and do your research first.

      • What's this 4c voucher?

        • +4

The previous commenter could be referring to:

          • 4c/L Woolworths discount fuel offer (which is a 6c/L discount fuel offer in Tasmania)
          • 4c/L myToyota discount offer
          • 4c/L myHyundai discount offer
          • 4c/L discount fuel offer offered by some IGAs
          • 4c/L Drakes fuel discount offer

In other words, there are a lot of different fuel discount offers at a lot of different Ampol/Caltex locations across Australia.

Your best bet is to look at the Ampol / Caltex section on the Fuel Discounts page, as it lists a large number of discount offers available at different Ampol/Caltex locations across Australia. The page is not exhaustive, so there are probably other fuel discount offers out there that I’m not aware of!

          • +2

@WookieMonster: Ampol / Caltex can get confusing.

Luckly with the rebranding its a bit more clearer.

Some Caltex Woolworths were owned and operated by Ampol and some were owned and operated by EG previously Woolworths.

For example Caltex Woolworth Riverton and Caltex Woolworth Murdoch were both owned by Ampol. Now there both just Ampol Foodary.

          • @WookieMonster: Are these discounts stackable?

            • +1

@Garrettau: I’m not entirely sure, because nowadays I actually fill up my vehicle at EG / Caltex Woolworths, not Ampol. (And before anyone tells me to use a helicopter or offers me a seat on a future helicopter ride, please tell me where there is a 7-Eleven in Tasmania. Mobil sold their fuel stations in Tasmania to United Petroleum before they sold their mainland fuel stations to 7-Eleven…)

From what I have read, you may be able to stack discounts, but staff are likely to manually remove one of your discounts, because it is against the terms and conditions of each discount offer to use them in conjunction with other discount offers.

            • +1

@Garrettau: Staff manually remove 4c discount stacking, even if you play dumb

    • +5

So this is 12.5-14.3% discount on fuel depending on which spend amount you have.

Ampol has to charge 20c/L more than other stations at current prices for you to be worse off…

    • Bad luck; they are the cheapest in my area. Swings and roundabouts.

    • Same with my local Ampol. 7/11 is always cheaper

  • +1

    worth more than gold

    • petrol definitely isn't worth more than gold, by volume or weight.

      • But $10 credit is

  • +1

Do they sell any other giftcard instore?
    Already have 7/11 chopper

    • +2

I have bought Amazon gift cards previously.

      Some info thanks to WookieMonster:

Most Ampol or Caltex locations sell AmpolCash or Caltex StarCash physical gift cards, which can be redeemed at all Ampol, Caltex and EG / Caltex Woolworths locations across Australia with EFTPOS facilities.1 A small number of locations will also sell other gift cards (e.g. Amazon, Google Play, PlayStation).

    • To build on the previous comment:

      • Most Ampols in my area only sell AmpolCash gift cards and a small range of SIM cards.

      • There is one Ampol in my area that also sells Google Play gift cards, PlayStation gift cards, Amazon gift cards, and some other gift cards I don't recall.

  • -1

Shame ampol has not installed its EV chargers yet!

  • Woohoo, discounted Amazon GCs!

  • +1

i am still confused. some of the woolwoths caltex servos are there in both Ampol location search and EG Australia / Caltex Woolworths locations(eg-australia.com) link. so are those excluded or included?
i am assuming anything that shows here :https://www.ampol.com.au/service-stations/find-a-service-station is included?

    • +6

tl;dr look for locations on the Ampol locator that are not Woolworths Caltex locations.

If a service station appears on the EG locator or appears as a Woolworths Caltex on the Ampol locator, it is a location operated by EG Group and is therefore excluded from this deal. The reason those locations appear on the Ampol locator is that Ampol supplies the fuel to those locations, but leaves it up to EG Group to operate the location itself.

Any other service stations on the Ampol locator should be included in this deal.1 This includes any Ampol Woolworths Metro service stations, as those are operated by Ampol themselves and Ampol went into an agreement with Woolworths to use the Woolworths Metro branding for the convenience store attached to the service station. (Before you ask, those locations probably don’t sell WISH gift cards, as those locations don’t actually accept WISH gift cards, but I’m happy to be corrected!)

If the Caltex location appears on the Caltex / Puma Energy locator, those locations are either operated by Chevron or are licensing the Caltex brand directly from Chevron as part of Chevron’s move back into the Australian fuel market. These locations do not involve Ampol at all, so it is therefore excluded from this deal.

Still confused? I don’t blame you. It’s crazy that the Caltex trademark owner (Chevron), Caltex trademark licensee (Ampol) and Caltex trademark sub-licensee (EG, who license the Caltex trademark from Ampol) are all operating different operations, but that’s how things roll, I guess. At least the other Caltex trademark sub-licensees (e.g. Bennetts Petroleum in Tasmania, who licence the Caltex trademark from Ampol) are participating in this Amex deal. (Well, it looks like they are.)

I really should make a Venn diagram in MS Paint to help explain this crazy situation…

      1. I say should, because some locations are franchisees who have opted to not accept Amex or who opt to a levy a surcharge on Amex payments. It would be wise to call ahead for these locations to ensure they accept Amex.

      • So Ampol foodary ones should be safe I assume?

      • So I take it you can use this offer to buy non fuel items at the WW Metro within an Ampol? Same checkout system?

I’ve never been to one of these so just asking.

        • +2

It should be fine. (The linked commenter confirmed they got cashback from the purchase a few days later.)

Fuel purchases and non-fuel purchases (include gift card purchases) go through the same POS system, so you should get the cashback, regardless of what you purchase at an Ampol Woolworths Metro.

          • @WookieMonster: This is what had happened to me with this deal (showing as Caltex after purchase).

Will update in a few days if it flicks to ampol or the offer shows used.

      • So riddle me this WookieMonster.

My Amex terms and conditions on the Amex App state:

        "Caltex Woolworths locations are excluded"

I filled up this morning at an "Ampol" Woolies and receipt information shows "EG Fuelco".

How the hell is someone to know that "Ampol Woolies" are excluded.

I'm sure I could argue with an Amex rep that I am entitled to the cashback as per their terms I did not fill up at a "Caltex" Woolies.

        • +1

If it does not sell Ampol giftcard, it is not. Since giftcard is on sale for 5% off, it is better to buy it first.

        • +1

Ahhh I only realised this would be an issue when I was reading a press release at lunchtime, where EG and Ampol recently agreed to cease all legal action between them.

The press release (dated to last Friday) says that EG has agreed to replace all Caltex branding with Ampol branding at EG service stations by December 2022. I did not realise that EG and Ampol already started the rebranding process at some EG locations!

I think you have a leg to stand on with any complaint with Amex.

          • “Caltex Woolworths” is increasingly becoming irrelevant, particularly with EG and Ampol having very recently agreed to start the rebranding process, plus the EG store locator stating EG is rebranding most sites to “EG Caltex” (or with the very recent announcement, “EG Ampol”). I think Amex’s terms should have stated “EG Australia locations are excluded” for the avoidance of any doubt, but I don’t work at Amex! I also suspect those terms were either written before EG and Ampol announced their ceasefire, or no one at Ampol or Amex bothered to review it before copying and pasting the terms from the last Ampol/Amex deal.

          • When you contact Amex, a potential sticking point could be whether the EG location you went to actually appears on the participating locations list on the Amex app. An Amex rep may turn around and say “hey, the location you went to was not on our participating locations list. You should have checked the list first.” I suggest you be prepared for that.

          • @WookieMonster: No specific mention/listing of participating locations in T&C’s.

            • +1

@Sterio: Ahhh yeah, very good point. I was half-asleep when I activated the offer this morning and thought i saw such a list… I thought they'd have the participating locations list, which is something they did in the previous Ampol/Caltex offers.

You definitely have a leg to stand on with Amex!

  • +6

Can't find it advertised anywhere, but I got 5% of my Ampol gift cards this morning when I bought.

    • +2

I’m getting a very strong sense of deja vu.

    • +1

Again! Nice stack! Hope it’s still running when I am out of Quarantine.

      • +1

Deal ends 03 May, so you should be fine. Hopefully.

        • +1

Yep, if I’m not out by then, petrol will be the least of my worries! Cheers for the update.

        • +1

All good, grabbed $400 worth so far…..another $400 to go……not even splitting down to $80, just getting $100 cards in one transaction

  • $80 minimum on my Essential. Ty OP!

  • +1

Thanks OP, been a while since a decent offer such as this is available on all primaries and supps

  • Ok, don't have to use 7/11 chopper until June

  • +1

3 Amex cards, $1845 in Annual fees, and didn't score this offer. Hardening my resolve to ditch them when they expire!

    • +4

Or just switch to Amex Essential with no annual fee and still get this kind of promo

      • Yes I got it on Discovery primary and 4 supps - no fee.

  • What are people's experiences with Ampol (not the ones linked with EG or Woolies)? All the ones near my area tend to suffer from lack of maintenance and dirty pumps.

    • Thankfully the two Ampols near us (one is only 500m away) have recently been completely refurbished - the ancient one about 500m form us which used to be an independent had new tanks installed as well, so we buy fuel there regularly as it's one of the cheapest in the area (cheap being a relative term in rural Tasmania!). Unfortunately they don't accept Amex so no good for this offer (which I received), but the Ampol in the nearby town does so I'll be filling up there. As I have to use premium in my car, it won't take long to get to a $70 spend!

  • Thank you for the great post, how do I sign up for the offer? On my AMEX app under offers it says "No New Offers". Is there a link or anything I can sign up to to get the offer? or is it related to my spending? Many thanks,

    • It is a targeted deal. If it is not in the My Offers section on the Amex app or the Amex website, it is not available to you.

Amex no longer offer manual enrollment links, so there is no link to give to you to manually enrol yourself. I think Amex effectively stopped doing that around 2019.

I actually received an email about this offer today as well, so I don't know whether Amex will email you about this offer later on. Maybe you'll be targeted with another Ampol offer later? I remember another Ampol cashback offer for Amex around this time last year, but I wasn't targeted for that offer.

The fact that you were not targeted for this deal probably has something to do with how you use your Amex. I rarely use my Amex nowadays, and I only ever used it at Ampol or EG / Caltex Woolworths to pay for gift cards when there were cashback deals or bonus points deals (because I use WISH gift cards or AmpolCash gift cards to pay for fuel, not my Amex nor other credit/debit cards). The last time I used an Amex at a fuel station was in November 2021 when I bought some discounted AmpolCash gift cards…

  • +1

Went into an location today labelled as Ampol Foodary on the Ampol location finder, so I believe it's an eligible location. The charge on my card shows "Caltex" as the transaction description and I didn't get a confirmation email (though I don't believe the emails are being issued any more regardless).

I had a look and they had a few different types of gift cards behind the counter including JB HiFi, Amazon, Stan, Netflix, Playstation cards of some kind and possible a couple of didn't recognise. I tried to buy a couple of Stan gift cards but for some reason the cards would not activate through the POS. The operator said it was throwing up an error about the line being deleted from the system. I was building a reasonable queue behind me so I didn't want to mess around with trying any other type of cards etc but it could be an indicator that non AmpolCash gift cards are being phased out.

In the end I was refunded the money but I had it refunded to a non-Amex card so as far as AmEx are concerned there was a $80 spend at an Ampol location. Will confirm if the credit is applied and then go back to this location and try for Amazon or Stan cards again with a supp card.

    • I'm fairly sure you should get the $10 credit. Some Ampol locations will still show up as "Caltex" merchants, but that is fine, as it probably indicates it was recently rebranded from Caltex to Ampol. I would be much more concerned if it showed up as "EG FuelCo" or "Caltex Woolworths", because that would indicate the location was an EG Australia / Caltex Woolworths location (which are excluded from this deal).

I didn't receive an email after my purchase on Friday, and I find that Amex sometimes send emails after eligible purchases and other times does not bother with any emails.

I have never actually seen Stan gift cards sold at an Ampol/Caltex, so I wonder whether a gift card distributor accidentally sent (or dropped off) the wrong gift cards to that location? I have only ever seen Amazon, Google Play, PlayStation and Netflix gift cards sold at the one Ampol in my general area…

      • Yet to receive the $10 credit. Merchant shows at Caltex Star Mart. Purchased on Saturday.

        • I personally haven't received the $10 credit yet, but the Amex app shows that I recently redeemed the Ampol offer, so I should get the credit within the next couple of days. For reference, I purchased from an "Ampol Foodary".

If you purchased from a "Caltex Star Mart", you should be fine.

  • +1

The conditions say "in-store only" and "in-person only". Am I right in thinking this means you can't use the Ampol app/Fuelpay to stack with the 6c offer on there? Has anyone tested/confirmed either way?

(I realise finding the gift cards at 5% off is the better deal - asking for future reference as much as anything else)

    • +1

That would be my assumption, as you complete payment through the FuelPay app itself and you never need to enter the physical store and use a physical EFTPOS terminal. I am a little surprised that the terms and conditions did not list FuelPay as an explicit exclusion.

FYI, you also cannot use gift cards as a payment method through FuelPay. Considering a lot of Ampol locations allow you to use other discount offers, most Ampol / Caltex locations accept AmpolCash digital gift cards and pretty much all Ampol / Caltex / EG Australia locations accept AmpolCash physical gift cards, FuelPay probably isn’t worth it.
