5% off AmpolCash Physical Gift Cards @ Ampol (In-store at Participating Locations Only)

1040

Once again, a massive shout-out to jasonc74 for tipping me off about this deal!

This deal seems to be only available at locations owned by Ampol Retail Pty Ltd (i.e. Ampol-owned locations), and these locations are branded as Ampol. Most Ampol locations do not have any signage regarding this deal, but you should ask the attendant whether their AmpolCash gift cards are discounted by 5%.

This deal can be stacked with the (targeted) AMEX $10 cashback offer at Ampol.

AmpolCash digital gift cards are sold at a 5% discount or 3% cashback everyday at a number of gift card portals, but the difference between AmpolCash physical gift cards and AmpolCash digital gift cards are:

  • AmpolCash physical gift cards are accepted at almost all locations on the Ampol locator with EFTPOS facilities, including all EG Australia / Caltex Woolworths locations with Ampol or Caltex branding.1 It can also be used at Caltex-branded locations with EFTPOS facilities, as long as it is not a location that appears on the Caltex / Puma Energy locator.

  • On the other hand, AmpolCash digital gift cards are only redeemable at participating Ampol locations (which may also be branded as Caltex locations).

AmpolCash gift cards can be used in conjunction with a number of fuel discount offers at Ampol or EG Australia (which can be found on the Fuel Discounts page).

Offer terms and conditions:

  • Offer is for 5% off AmpolCash physical gift cards (Card) purchased in participating stores only (excludes online purchases).
  • The Offer starts 12:01am 06/04/22 AEST and ends 11:59pm 03/05/22.
  • The Offer is applicable on denominations of $25, $50, $100, $250 and $500.
  • Customers are only eligible to redeem AmpolCash gift cards in exchange for fuel or in-store products after the purchase of promotional AmpolCash and it is not redeemable for cash.
  • AmpolCash physical gift cards expire on the last day of the month, as stated on the Card, or if no month is stated, 36 months after the date of the purchase of the Card. Any balance that remians after expiry will not be available to use.
  • AmpolCash may only be used at Ampol outlets (which as we transition from Caltex to Ampol may be branded at Caltex or Ampol) where EFTPOS terminals are available and operational.
  • AmpolCash cannot be used to purchase other gift cards (including other AmpolCash cards), prepaid or post-paid phone or internet vouchers, transport tickets, mobile phones and accessories, Tolls payments, or lottery tickets.
  • AmpolCash physical gift card available varies from retailer to retailer.
  • Not valid with any other offer.
  • For full AmpolCash terms and conditions, please visit: https://www.ampol.com.au/fuel-cards/ampolcash/conditions-of-…

  1. The only exception is unmanned locations. AmpolCash physical gift cards can only be used at unmanned locations if your gift card has PIN verification enabled.
    - You can enable PIN verification at the time of purchase by telling the attendant you would like to set a PIN. The attendant will ask you to swipe the gift card and key in your desired PIN.
    - Otherwise, you can email [email protected] with the gift card number on the front of the card and a copy of the gift card proof of purchase and request PIN verification to be enabled on the gift card.

    Local Ampol, 195c, 7 11 chopper 175c.
    Not worth it for me.
    YMMV

    • +4

      Fair enough.

Considering the nearest 7-Eleven to me is about an 800km trip away in either direction (and also requires a trip on a ferry), choppers are completely useless for me.

      • +1

Hah, dont be too concerned only 15km from me Ampol is $158.9 (91) while 7/11 is the same. And Ampol gives a further 4c off with Toyota app.

        • $1.589/L for U91 is not bad.

A lot of the stations on Hobart's western shore are around $1.999/L for U91, and some of the stations on the Hobart eastern shore are approaching $1.769/L for U91. At least I can use a 6c/L discount fuel voucher at EG / Caltex Woolworths stations here, so that somewhat softens the blow.

Makes you wonder why there's free bus travel here for all (for now).

      • +1

choppers are completely useless for me.

You know choppers don't run on ULP right?

    • for me Ampol 4c toyota discount and 5 to 6% off gift is cheaper than 7 11 on Tuesday in Perth

Stack with the Amex 70-10 or 80-10 offer? Would it work?

    • +2

Yes, as it states on the fourth line from OP.

    • +4

      Yes, it should.

The last time Ampol ran a similar discounted gift card deal, there was also a concurrent Amex cashback deal. I went to an Ampol Foodary and purchased discounted AmpolCash gift cards using my Amex, and earned the cashback credit within a couple of days of purchase.

Additionally, Amex have no idea whether you bought fuel, food or gift cards at Ampol, because the process for paying for an AmpolCash gift card is the same as paying for fuel or other convenience store items (assuming you’re not paying at the pump or via FuelPay in Ampol’s app). Amex can only tell that you bought something in-store at Ampol.

      • +2

        Good old tech analysis limitations!

      • Have you used AmpolCash to buy in store gift cards such as Amazon or JB Hi-fi GCs?

        • +1

I tried to buy gift cards at an EG / Caltex Woolworths using an AmpolCash gift card a few months ago, but I got an error message. It looked very different to the error message you get when attempting to use WISH gift cards to pay for gift cards at EG / Caltex Woolworths, so I think it was Ampol (the gift card issuer) denying the purchase, not EG / Caltex Woolworths.

I haven't tried purchasing any gift cards at Ampol using AmpolCash physical gift cards, because:

          • Most Ampols near me only sell AmpolCash gift cards and SIM cards. There is one Ampol a fair distance from me that sells Amazon gift cards, but I'm not going out to that part of town just to see whether AmpolCash gift cards can be used as a payment method for Amazon gift cards…

          • The fact that I got a weird error message at EG / Caltex Woolworths hints at the fact that Ampol check whether you're trying to buy a gift card when you request payment from an AmpolCash gift card, so it wouldn't surprise me if Ampol will automatically blocked any such payment requests.

There's nothing stopping you from trying though! I could be very wrong in regards to Ampol. (To be fair, Ampol and EG are two very separate businesses…)

        • +1

Bad news: I tried to purchase a Netflix gift card and an AmpolCash gift card in separate transactions at an Ampol Foodary earlier today. When I swiped a different AmpolCash gift card in both transactions, the EFTPOS terminal displayed an error message.

Just today received $10 credit from Amex deal. thanks for the insight.

    Love a deal stack
    Thanks for the info op

Haven't even used the last lot of Ampol fuel cards from last year because they are always expensive

  • +1

For those that have access to SunCorp Rewards, they have 5% off digital Ampol gift cards aswell.

    • this can stack with AMEX offer

      • You mean the SunCorp Rewards 5% off? Are you sure??

        • +3

No. He’s saying that THIS offer of buying the gift card in store using Amex will stack.

so buying a $100 gift card using Amex will cost $95, then you will also get $10 back.

          • +1

@Diplomats: You can get $100 gift card for 5% off ($95). Then amex gives you $10 back ($85).
Then you can use the gift card in places Amex does not allow, such as Woolworths Ampol stations, where you can then stack with 4c Woolworths discount.

Altogether, off $1.80 fuel, you achieve a $1.49/litre price if you spend exactly $100.
Roughly 17.3% discount depending on the fuel price.

            • -1

@xsacha: why are you trying to correct me when I’ve already said you’d be paying $95 and then ALSO get $10 back ? which is $85 ?

      • Richard

I doubt it as the spend is with Suncorp, not Ampol. So Amex isnt going to see the right vendor to rebate you back the $10

Plus I dont think Suncorp rewards takes Amex.

        • I means this buying the gift card in store using Amex will stack.

          • @RichardF89: According to the posts by WookieMonster above, that should be possible. I might be going to try today and see. Depends on a number of factors - will wife stop and does the servo I plan to go to sell the discounted cards

            • @RockyRaccoon: Update. I bought today at an Ampol servo, and the cards are clearly marked with 5% off.

Nothing on Amex at this point.

              Receipt clearly says from Ampol.

Also I choose an Ampol that has a foodary attached.

That seems to at least indicate its Ampol associated vs EG or Woolworths.

  • +2

Many thanks OP. Went to one ampol and they did not know about the deal. I got 5% off at the same place during the last promo. Went to another ampol no signage of the offer, i just picked up a gift card and the cashier said they were 5% off.

  • +2

Went to an old-school Caltex Starmart. Ampol gift cards scanned at 5% off and the cashier did not even know.

  • +3

Cashier was fine with split payments.

Another $350 of GCs on top of my $200 leftover from the previous deal stack. Fuel secured for a year.

  • +2

AmpolCash Physical Gift Cards can worked on unmaned site (OPT) only if a pin is register with the card.

  • +2

i bought normal package new ampol gift card and scans for 5% off at ampol foodary..

  • Is it possible to check the card balance online?

    • +3

      No.

To check the gift card’s balance, you’ll need to do one of the following:

      • Check the receipt of the last transaction where you swiped the gift card. There should be a section towards the bottom of the card transaction information on the receipt where it says Remaining Card value is xxx.xx Card Expiry xx/xx.

      • Call the phone number on the back of the gift card (1300 726 530) and get ready to quote the ten-digit number printed on the bottom right-hand corner of the front of the gift card. The operating hours of this phone number are 8:30am (AEST) to 5:30pm (AEST) Mondays to Fridays (excluding public holidays). Not ideal for the Easter holidays…

      • Send an email to [email protected] and include the aforementioned ten-digit number. I have never sent an email to this address before, so I don’t know how regularly it is monitored and how quickly the AmpolCash team reply to emails.

    • +3

I consider it a basic minimum requirement these days is to be able to check gc balances online.

      • +1

AmpolCash digital gift cards balance can be viewed online and it updates a few hours after use.

  • +2

First time redeemed it at an EG location. The receipt still shows it as a Starcash card, though. I always thought it is only acceptable at Caltex/Ampol locations before.

    • +1

The receipt still shows it as a Starcash card, though.

Yeah, AmpolCash gift cards function the same as the old Caltex StarCash gift cards, but they are obviously now rebranded to AmpolCash. I've redeemed AmpolCash and Caltex StarCash gift cards at EG locations this year with zero issues.

My guess is that the StarCash name will soon disappear from the receipts and EFTPOS machines, because StarCash is actually Chevron IP (not Ampol IP) and Chevron is eager to take all their IP away from Ampol ASAP. Ampol was forced by the Federal Court last year to remove any references to StarCards at Ampol-branded locations, and my guess is that EG will eventually also have to also update their POS system to remove references to StarCash as well.

I always thought it is only acceptable at Caltex/Ampol locations before.

I thought so too, but an EG employee tipped a few of us off last year about AmpolCash physical gift cards being accepted at EG. Having said that, most people probably believed any AmpolCash gift cards were not accepted at EG, because:

      • AmpolCash Digital gift cards are currently only redeemable at most Ampol / Caltex locations, due to the acceptance of AmpolCash Digital gift cards entirely being dependent on locations having the correct type of barcode scanner. EG have not upgraded the barcode scanners at their locations, partly because EG and Ampol have been busy fighting each other in the courts for the last 18 months or so.

      • It is a lot harder to get AmpolCash physical gift cards at a discount when compared with AmpolCash Digital gift cards, so it usually wouldn't make sense to get the physical gift cards. I think Ampol discounts its AmpolCash gift cards by 5% once or twice a year.

Considering EG has agreed to give access to Ampol to convert all EG locations to include the Ampol brand by the end of this year, my hope is that the rebranding process will also see Ampol get EG to upgrade their barcode scanners so EG can finally accept AmpolCash Digital gift cards.

  • I have an unrelated question. Where can the old star cash gift cards be used? I purchase it at Ampol during one of the previous Amex offers. It just got declined at a Woolworths Caltex (EG) petrol station for me just then, but the Ampol gift cards worked. When they sold it to me, they said it’s the same as Ampol gift cards..

    • +1

That’s strange. I redeemed a Caltex StarCash physical gift card three times at three different Woolworths Caltex (EG Caltex) locations in Feb 2022 without any issues, and that gift card was purchased during the previous 5% off deal.

Caltex StarCash physical gift cards that are issued by Ampol should be pretty much identical to AmpolCash physical gift cards, except for the fact that the cards have different branding.1 The technology appears to have not changed between the two, plus they carry the same barcode number on the back, which hints at the fact that you should be able to redeem them at all 531 Woolworths Caltex / EG Caltex / EG Ampol locations across Australia.2

Did the EFTPOS terminal display a particular error code when you swiped the Caltex StarCash gift card? Without knowing whether or not there was an error code, your gift card may have been rejected for a number of reasons, including:

      • The magstripe of the gift card is damaged.

      • The wrong PIN was entered on the EFTPOS terminal. If your Caltex StarCash or AmpolCash gift card has a PIN associated with it, you can still redeem it without entering the PIN at EG Caltex / EG Ampol by simply pressing the Enter button on the PIN screen.

      • The gift card had insufficient balance to cover for the amount requested.

      • The gift card was not activated correctly. I would be surprised if this was the case, as the POS system at the place you purchased it (and the purchase receipt) would show that the gift card was activated at the time of purchase.

      • The gift card has been cancelled or suspended or expired. Who knows what may have gone wrong in the AmpolCash system between you purchasing the gift card and attempting to redeem it!

      • EG is no longer accepting Caltex StarCash gift cards (but is still accepting AmpolCash gift cards) at locations with Ampol or Caltex branding. This doesn’t make a lot of sense, as I don’t know how their systems can identify the difference between a Caltex StarCash gift card and an AmpolCash gift card, plus it would probably contravene the Fuel Supply Agreement between EG and Ampol. I mean, I guess EG could block it based on a range of gift card numbers, but I don’t see any logical reason for this happening.

      • You were at one of the five EG locations across Australia that currently has nothing to do with Ampol. This also makes no sense, because neither Caltex StarCash gift cards nor AmpolCash gift cards should be redeemable at those locations.

I think this is something you’ll have to chase up with Ampol either over the phone (1300 726 530) or via email ([email protected]) in order for you to get to the bottom of it, because I don’t think it is as simple as “EG doesn’t accept Caltex StarCash gift cards anymore”. It would be faster to chase it up over the phone, except for the fact they’re only open between 8:30am (AEST) and 5:30pm (AEST) Mondays to Fridays excluding public holidays…

If the AmpolCash team cannot see the problem from their side, you could try chasing it up with EG. I’ve found that the EG customer service reps looking after their phone line are only sort of helpful and generally can only help you with basic issues. However, if you manage to have an EG area manager call you to discuss your issue, they are usually pretty good at resolving any issues you may have. (As you can tell, I’ve had personal experience of directly dealing with a confused EG customer service rep and a very helpful EG area manager.)

      1. If you swipe an AmpolCash gift card at the EFTPOS terminal of an EG Caltex or EG Ampol location, the EFTPOS terminal will show that you’re attempting to redeem a “StarCash” gift card, even though the gift card itself is not called a “StarCash” gift card. This further hints at the fact that the technology behind an AmpolCash gift card and a Caltex StarCash gift card is practically identical.

      2. There are currently five additional EG locations across Australia, but those locations do not have Ampol or Caltex branding, because the fuel sold at those locations is currently supplied by Chevron, not Ampol. The five locations are:
        - Sunbury (Gap Road) (VIC)
        - Melton South (VIC)
        - Bacchus Marsh (VIC)
        - Winter Valley (VIC)
        - Mittagong (NSW)

Thanks for the detailed reply WookieMonster. I found it strange too. Will call them on Wednesday and see what they say. I’ll post an update as well.

        • +1

So I called and they told me those Star cash cards are the older ones with pin (newer ones don’t). I can see the difference in packaging as it says pin below the card number. The attendant set up the pin but failed to tell me what it was. The rep on the phone reset the pin for me, so next time I use the card, I have to just enter any 4 digit pin of my choosing and it will be remembered as the pin for that card.

          • +1

@magster: That’s weird. The two Caltex StarCash gift cards I have do not have say “PIN” below the card number, so I’ve learnt something.

It’s a bit dodgy for the attendant to set up a PIN without letting you know what it was!

            • +2

@WookieMonster: Yeh these ones even says expiry is 12months from date of issue on the back packaging (although it is actually 3 years), so must be very old stock. I also have some of the newer ones which doesn’t say pin below the card number. The phone rep said they have phased out those pin cards, but should still continue to work at all stores including EG sites.
