Oh Mr Chen.. You've done it again!

  • +1

Out of stock at all the stores near me.

  • +21

It's pretty meh tbh. I've had it before.

    • +5

Agree. These are not very good taste-wise

      • +2

Really? I really enjoyed it, def better than instant ramen.

        • Better than Nissin Ramen?

          • @foxmulder: I thought so, but looking at the other comments here, maybe not!

            • +1

@kiitos: Nissin Ramen is THE best. But I'm open for other if similarly good.

          • @foxmulder: No instant Ramen is better than Ichiran, Nissin is good, but Ichiran lead the way.

          • @foxmulder: Nissin Ramen is way too bland

    • +2

I felt scammed when i bought this the other week thinking paying premium price for premium product.
total garbage compared to restaurant ramen and meh at best compared to Shin ramen for $1.50

      • Yup its more like a veggie broth with some crappy noodles

        • Its sort of OK if you load it up yourself and add sesame oil, chilli etc

  • +7

Big fan of Mr Chen's products but this is not my fav. Taste is somewhat different than jap ramen more like diluted veggie stock

    • No pork or meat in the stock would impact the flavour if you're used to a meat based stock, which most ramen is.

  • +4

Mr Chen did well with the range of Chinese food. However, I have not heard good feedback regarding the food for other regions, Japanese, Vietnamese.

Did i just see corn kernels in Ramen?????

    • +3

It’s a thing - had charred butter corn kernels in my ramen at Japan airport - taste sensation

      • Have you tried tuna and corn pizza?

        • -2

No but I used to make tuna pasta salad with corn kernels in my old days of meal prep and 3 hr a day workouts. Anything for the

          A E S T H E T I C.

    • +3

There are lots of ramen varieties. Miso ramen from the Sapporo region usually has corn kernels as toppings.

    • +12

In this case with the combination of other ingredients like bokchoy and wagame, it doesn't look authentic at all. Looks like a bad attempt at ramen by someone who's never been to Japan.

But they do use corn in Japan, more specifically ramen in Hokkaido is known for using corn and butter in a miso based broth.

If anyone lives in Sydney, I strongly suggest you go to the city to try Gumshara, it's a well known and popular ramen joint among the Japanese people living in Sydney. Insanely strong and thick concentrated Tonkotsu flavour which has connections to the Muteppou style of Tonkotsu ramen, I believe the people running the place used to work at Muteppou back in Japan before they expanded to Sydney, so it's very authentic. If Gumshara Tonkotsu is too strong and porky for you, Ippudo (Japanese chain) in various Westfields across Sydney is also another good place for a more traditional Tonkotsu flavour. :)

      • +1

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look it up next time I'm in the city. From google it appears to be just in Haymarket so can't be too hard to find.

May I also share Ryo's noodles in Crows nest. I and the family are big fans of this hole in the wall.

What is about ramen that calls out the prescriptivist weebs? There's no such thing as "authentic" ramen. There are few broader, more diverse or more welcoming churches. Japanese people don't gatekeep ramen. Why does the Jetstar crowd insist on doing so?

Ramen is Chinese for starters, so as an adopted and heavily customised dish it's already on shaky ground when you're talking about "authenticity". It's also young - barely over a century old - and has evolved continuously throughout that time.

Throw in at least four broad types (more now, with shellfish broths emerging), at least fourteen main regional variations, add variations from store to store (and there are tens of thousands of stores), then add a healthy dose of continuous, sometimes rapid evolution (see 2021's new toppings, like duck, tomato and cured ham, or even new broth styles like shellfish or "quartet"), and saying "this is authentic and that isn't" is just nonsense.

        • Because its fun.

        • +2

          Wow.

For starters, two things stand out that worry me.

          ''Japanese people don't gatekeep ramen''

          ''Ramen is Chinese for starters''

I'm half Japanese, spent half of my life there. Japanese people love gate keeping shit, Japanese culture is inherently inwards looking (look at our immigration etc), we are gate keeping shit 24/7. Hell I've even lost my Japanese passport because they are gatekeeping dual nationality controls! Kyushu Kagoshima Ramen hasn't changed since my mum was born and it won't. Even though we set a world record from going to feudal to industrial, The Japanese mentality is still stuck behind the 21st century.

Ramen is not Chinese, it is inspired by Chinese cuisine yes, but my god it is not Chinese, please say this in Japan, I would love to see the reaction and your subsequent jail term.

          • @genyosha: Ramen is literally la mian or 拉面. Mr half japanese., but weeb away. Or half weeb anyway

      • Gumshara is too much for me. I would recommend Yasaka ramen instead.

    • +1

      Yes.

Does seeing entirely normal things usually cause you to use five question marks?

    • Corn in ramen is good

  • Loved Mr Chen's ginger prawn dumpling, bought 20 packs already.

    • 1.88 ?

      • About $2.50, 10% off + 3000 rewards points + 4% off giftcard.

  • Nissan instant noodles are better than this

    • +8

The car manufacturer makes instant noodles now?

      • +5

You should try the Toyota pork bao.

        "Oh what a feeling!"

          And the Mitsu-sushi.

Frozen ramen???!! Why? Because regular ramen is too hard to cook? It takes literally 2 minutes. Have some dignity.

    • Yes, all of the Japanese people who enjoy frozen ramen at home must be idiots /s

      • OK, that's one.
You can probably find videos of Italians eating frozen pizza too. But how does that prove anything?

      • +1

that actually looks ok, can we get it here in Australia?

    • Proper ramen can take days just to make the broth - I'd hope frozen ramen would be higher quality than the 2 minute noodle packets, and closer to actual ramen taste. Wouldn't mind it if so!

      • You can buy convenient powders and paste for kombu stock and miso. Or make in bulk and freeze portions.

        (e.g. woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/364436)

Then add dry ramen, hot water and fresh vegetables.

  • +1

    This one is terrible.

  • +1

These are horrid, save your tastebuds. On clearance for a reason

  • Saw this yesterday but on reading the pack info decided against. I couldn’t see it being nice.

  • Scanned full price Kippax ACT

    • I checked the Woolworths app and it shows up as in stock and at $1.88 at Woolworths Belconnen (the one in Westfield, not the Woolworths Metro), so maybe try there? The app also shows it being sold at $5.30 at Woolworths Hawker, so don't go there.

I have not actually visited Woolworths Belconnen to check whether it is in stock though, so who knows whether or not it is actually in stock and actually being sold at that price…

      • +1

Bought it at close to full price Woolworths Belconnen last night

Used my Rewards card but didn’t get a receipt.

      • +1

Ignore my comment above. I can confirm I paid $1.88 for it at Woolworths Belconnen last night. I've now logged into my Woolworths Rewards and confirmed that was the price that it scanned as.

  • I think i will pass on these Mr Chen's. Tried this ramen and it taste…very bland. Same with their Prawn Wonton soup. Taste really bad.

  • I prefer Mr Miyagi Japanese ramen

  • Is it cultural appropriation for Mr Chen to be imitating as a Japenese chef, and by the above accounts, a poor one at that?

    • I hope you're joking. Depends if you give a crap about cultural appropriation. I just made 2 different curries from different countries and I appropriated both South Indian and Madagascan food culture. I'm considering also a coconut basmati rice, may as well apprpriate some Thai as well.

      • But would you say that it is very appropriate to be doing what you've been doing?

      • How dare you just admit to appropriating other cultures, you’re cancelled!!!

    • Yep, no one cares also have a guess how much I care about your pronouns…

  • +1

This is one of the worst things I have ever eaten.

  • +1

Very fishy. I had to throw it out.

  • Thanks I found some at town hall to try!

  • tried their Japanese Golden curry as it was on special, lacked taste

  • trash.

  • Ramen from Japan is better

  • +2

Jinmailang's Spicy Beef noodles are honestly the best noodles I have ever tried from a packet. Assuming you like both spicy and beef, I'd strongly recommend anyone to try them. Amazon link has a minimum of buying 15 (3x5) packets but they can be found in many Asian grocery stores.

    • -2

You need to get out more. jinmailang is an awful brand. Chinese crap.

      • -1

        go touch grass

        ure out of touch

        • Yeah….I thought that, then I realised that your just a misogynist who thinks a busty woman's pic is cool. I used to think that too, when I was 15.

  • Just had one and can confirm it was highly disappointing. The packaging cover contains contents that are also misleading. I think I got 1 bit of bok choy and 2 pieces of tofu in a watery broth.

  • I love how it says 1/2 price on the woolworths page and proceeds to:

"was $7.50" all the way down to $1.88… Man these must be a pain to sell.

China needs to stick to their own thing as I love some of their Yumcha restaurants here.
On the other hand I've avoided their "interpretations" like the plague ever since Chinese Pikachu.

    • -2

Ah thank you sinophobic (profanity) for your advice. Kindly bugger off

    • wut chines pikachu ?

  • Thanks hopefully better than the bland Nissin Ramen Kyushu Black Garlic Instant Noodle weebs here love
