Continuing with my week of tablet deals I have this previously popular tablet on sale for a record low price. Stock is limited at this price so it may not last long.

If you don't mind not having Widevine L1 DRM for Netflix HD, then this is an excellent alternative to the Lenovo P11. In terms of performance the UNISOC T618 in this and the Snapdragon 662 in the Lenovo P11 are about the same, however this tablet has more RAM and a better GPU so it will perform better in games. Plus you get double the storage with this.

Featuring Android 11 with Google Play, 10.4" 2000x1200 IPS display with 540nits peak brightness, 8GB RAM, 128GB Storage (MicroSD support), 7000mAh battery offering up to 11 hours, 18W USB Power Delivery charging, 4G Dual SIM, Sony 13MP Rear Camera, 8MP Front Camera, Quad Speakers, GPS/WiFi/Bluetooth 5.0, FM Radio and packs the UNISOC Tiger T618 Octa-core CPU.

Check out Techtablets's indepth review to see it in action.

@Clear , much thanks for your dedication to incredibly meaningful and insightful explanations of the various options on the very confusing tablet market - I've put many friends onto your buys and all of them have been incredibly impressed with your recommendations. Much thanks!

    • +20

Thanks so much I really appreciate that and it's good to hear people have been happy with my recommendations.

    • +1

Agreed. @Clear, your analysis and research has been really helpful. I was after a couple of low cost tablet options for the olds / kids to thrash.

  • Should it be "If you don't mind not having Widevine L1"?

    • +2

      Yes it should :)

  • +1

Bring back the P11 deal please. I missed out on that price

    • +7

If you search for 1005003707786416 on AliExpress, add the tablet to the cart and apply the coupon SPRING17 you can get it for US$164.40. I had shared a deal but it didn't meet OzBargain's AliExpress criteria so it was removed. I'm not allowed to directly link the product either.

      • +3

The OZB spirit in me won't allow me to buy it knowing that I could of gotten it for $5 cheaper lol

        • +4

Maybe I can get it cheaper in the next few days from another seller. We'll see.

  • -3

    it's not superamoled.

    • +7

      It’s also priced accordingly.

      • -4

I think other cheap tablets have it.

        • +4

They don't. AMOLED, let alone Super AMOLED displays are not cheap compared to other panel types and often they'll go for a cheaper OLED first.

The Lenovo XiaoXin Pad Pro which is 12.6" and around $850 AU has an AMOLED. While the Samsung Tab S7 with Super AMOLED is $849.

          • +1

@Clear: Pretty sure the 11 inch Tab S models have LCD actually, it’s the S7+ & S8+ which have the Super AMOLED - proving your point even further.

            • @trulymadly: You're right an 11" TFT display. I never take notice to Samsung tablets.

          • @Clear: Only S7 plus has AMOLED, the price is still around $1300

  • +1

Hi Clear, recommendation for a decent 8-9 inch tablet? Thanks

    • +2

Unfortunately they don't really exist besides the new Lenovo Legion Y700 8.8". The issue with this is that it's only had a Chinese release with their ZUI fork. So basically no Widevine and no Google Play at this stage.

  • I was waiting for this deal to come back. Pulled the trigger. Thank you Clear.

  • Hey clear, any recommendations for a good 13" or larger tablet? Cheers

    • +3

More expensive territory there. Lenovo have a few Yoga Pad variants like this at that size. I can look around later for some deals.

      • Legend, looks like it's on a flash sale for $688, $113 less than when you posted

        • Another choice is Samsung S7FE $499 on sale

  • Strangely it's 179.99 for me.
@clear any case with stand you can recommend for this model? Thanks

    • +3

$179.99 is correct. It would seem I had an extra discount being applied. AliExpress would be a suitable place to search for "Teclast T40 Case" with heaps available.

    • How can you get 179.99?

  • I would NOT give Teclast another try. I've got Teclast 98, it's way below the expectations. from CPU to Screen. the product was not too bad but just over advertised.

    • I think the tablet market and Android itself has really improved and matured since then. The hardware is certainly a lot better.

    • +4

check out the youtube review maybe? and if you expectation for a $250 tablet should be on par with ipad pro then surely you be disappointed.

  • +1

How good is Teclast with keeping Android updated? Can we expect it to be supported for a couple of years or no updates?

    • +2

My experience: No version updates (unless it's major flaw on same version). For the same hardware with new firmware would be a new product selling point.

    • +1

You won't get any updates. Lenovo will typically give you the next version up.

      • Thank you, expected as much for this price.

  • Is this good for play high end emulator like Mame / PS2?

    • Probably not ps2. Alot of games will be playable in the future, but will probably need a higher end card for half of the library.

  • +2

    +1 for OP's in-depth knowledge, pretty impressive.

  • Any way to spoof L1 on these devices using root / magisk?

    • +1

Unfortunately not. I know in the past you've been able to use magisk to retain Widevine L1 when your device is rooted.

  • Any good budget tablet that are 14" to 16"?? Any suggestions?

    • There won't be anything budget in those sizes. 10" is the sweet spot for budget right now.

      • Any recommendations you have for that sizes?

I don't have to spend top dollar for a ipad pro or s8 ultra haha

        • You'd be stuck with those. There's a Lenovo Yoga Tab 13 and Lenovo Tab P12 Pro up there in the same price range.

  • I'm going to turn my Prius into a Tesla :p

  • I watched the review link that OP posted. I don't quite understand why not having widevine level 1 cert means you can only Netflix in SD.
Why is the cert needed just to play Netflix in higher definition?

    • +1

It's DRM that certifies the device.

      • Thanks for replying.

So is this caused the manufacturer unwilling to cough the money to get it certified or is this caused by hardware limitation?

        • to keep the tablet cheap they are not going to pay the licence for widevine

          • +2

@AMLagonda: That's one part. The other part is that Netflix need to whitelist specific CPUs as well. The UNISOC T618 is not currently whitelisted so even with Widevine L1 it's not going to work.

            • @Clear: this is not completely true. the UNISOC chipsets are now whitelisted according to netflix (see here). it will be a matter of time before we start seeing devices certified with widevine l1 with a UNISOC chipset.

              • @ScuffedPanda: I checked about 2 weeks ago and they weren't showing. UNISOC had said several months ago they were working on it so that's really exciting. I have a UNISOC T618 tablet with Widevine L1.

I don't use Netflix but I do have Prime so I'll test it out.

              • @ScuffedPanda: Checked the BV Tab 11 and Netflix only sees it as Widevine L3 so the device will need to be whitelisted.

  • +1

Nice deal however I'd prefer the Alldocube if it were the same price. Any chance of some competitive tension and have Alldocube step up? They've been very quiet over the last couple of months with deals.

  • +2

I have an earlier version of this Teclast and while it works well, Teclast don't appear to update android OS so you are stuck with the original version (in my case 6.0) and can't go any higher. This stops you from using any aps that upgrade to later versions. Also, my tablet has some sort of plastic screen and not glass which isn't a great user experience.

  • if I'm looking for a glorified PDF reader and web browser, this seems good? Anything on the market that has a nice screen but is physically lighter in this price range worth exploring? maybe dropping the 4G and being wifi only? I never need 4g on a tablet, even on the work one where they pay for it.

    • +1

400-500g is about the weight you're going to get with 10" tablets since they all have similar battery sizes. Unless you're looking at a big brand like Lenovo, pretty much all these smaller brands will have 4G included. I don't use the 4G in mine.

      • thanks for the info. Work issued me an ipad air many years ago which I guess has spoiled me for weight expectations. They're not refreshing them though and the battery life on my old unit is shocking these days. (plus I'm not a fan of ios). Hence keeping an eye out for good android tablet deals. I have a Xiaomi mi pad 4, but at only 8" is still a smidge too small for comfort reading PDFs (and is also having an aging battery)

        • I tried 10" tablet… Till the end I think 8" is good size for reading

  • +1

Has there ever been any custom rom development on teclast tablets? The lack of firmware updates kind of puts me off.

    • +1

I bought one few years back, full of regret. Just get the cheapest known name brand. even if its lower spec it will still be a better experience.

  • FYI there's 7 left with this code before it expires.

  • +1

Just be aware that the priority shipping doesn't let you track and Banggood doesn't have a clue where the item is. Had to contact customer support with no help. Still waiting for my tablet ordered 4 weeks ago.

    • +2

Its been like that with banggood. One day your item just shows up.

  • Is there any reason for these tablets not to be safe from malware for identity theft online banking etc? Does a factory reset at purchase remove any chance of vendor added programs?

    • +1

These are reputable brands so they'd be safe and they're fairly bloat free. Factory resetting may remove bloat but sometimes it doesn't. It's possible to connect them to a tablet and use adb commands to remove bloat. I've done it with Samsung devices.

I'd recommend running an AV like Sophos on the device and seeing if they find anything. I've worked with malware infected Android devices and it does a good job detecting them.

  • Hey Clear,

What tablet would you recommend to purely run Lightspeed Kounta POS - Literally all it will run :)
